Note 4 Whole bunch of wierd things going on - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So there have been a whole bunch of weird things going on with my Note 4. Anyone else seeing this
1.) I have my apps arranged into folders and I am finding that randomly that apps are coming back out of the folders for no particular reason. It seems to happen when I install an app or power cycle the phone but also sometimes it just happens throughout the day
2.) Google Now "always on" stops working. Sometimes when the phone is asleep and never works when connected to wifi (I have seen others on the forum having this issue )
3.) Iheart radio app, I can't get it to install with the verified app setting checked or with my Gear Neo connected. If I turn off my Neo and uncheck verify app it will install but as soon as I turn the Neo on it uninstalls the App
4.) Starbucks app won't install ( I know this is Starbucks issue, just wanted to list it here for others)

Google search Starbuck apk. I had to side load it other day.
http://downloader-apk.com/starbucks/

For number 1. You have Create Shortcuts enabled in the Playstore settings. After you install an app. It will put the icon on the home screen as well as the drawer.

I think he means when you create folders in app drawer and put apps in different folders when you restart apps in drawer leave folders and go back to the way it was. I also notice when I set time/time zone to manual when I reboot it always goes back to auto time via network. There is a few quirks but nothing an update can't fix. My opinion is Selinux enforcement may be culprit. Android L is probably what was supposed to come stock but it would of delayed note 4 launch . I can't complain as I really like this note 4

I have a Gear 2 and have the same issue with the iheartradio app and the latest update. There seems to be an issue installing the gear portion of the app and when it fails, it decides to uninstall the entire program.
For now I have reverted to a previous release of iheartradio version 5.2.0 which seems to work fine and installs the gear portion without issue, hopefully they will resolve this soon.

So I have found some things/updated
" 1.) I have my apps arranged into folders and I am finding that randomly that apps are coming back out of the folders for no particular reason. It seems to happen when I install an app or power cycle the phone but also sometimes it just happens throughout the day " I have found one trigger for this and it is Samsung's Kids Mode. Running the Kids Mode will screw up all of the organization into folders back to a certain point in time. Not sure what event it is going back to but it is always the same point so anything installed after that point will come out of its folder after kids mode is turned off
"2.) Google Now "always on" stops working. Sometimes when the phone is asleep and never works when connected to wifi (I have seen others on the forum having this issue )" Turning off S Voice seems to have fixed this issue
"3.) Iheart radio app, I can't get it to install with the verified app setting checked or with my Gear Neo connected. If I turn off my Neo and uncheck verify app it will install but as soon as I turn the Neo on it uninstalls the App" I installed an older version and so far it is working
"4.) Starbucks app won't install ( I know this is Starbucks issue, just wanted to list it here for others) " I installed an older version and so far it is working

Glitch: ‘OK Google’ doesn’t work
A few people have been reporting issues getting the voice command “OK Google” to work correctly every time. For some people, it worked fine when initially set up, but then stopped working after a couple of days, other report that the “Always on” function that allows you to use the command when the screen is off, doesn’t work properly.
Workaround:
They shouldn’t be incompatible, but some people have had success here by turning off Voice wake-up in the Settings menu of S Voice. Others report the opposite (that S Voice must be on for “OK Google” to work).
Potential solutions:
Make sure that Settings > Language and input > Voice search > “Ok Google” Detection is set to Always on. Try restarting your Note 4.
If you’re still having the problem there’s a good chance that a specific app is causing it. You could check your apps one-by-one. Start with wearable apps, anything that accesses the notifications. Alternately you could do a factory reset and selectively re-install until you find the culprit.

For #1, use the menu tab on the top right in app drawer. Click edit. Then drag and drop the apps u want into folder. That did it for me.

[Android 2.2+] Multi Toggle Widget

Dear users,
Considering all 3C apps are now based on the same source code, they all behave the same way, and will exhibit the same issues. Any queries will also likely applies to all apps.
To make my life easier while continuing to provide support here (and start with a clean slate), I decided to close all my app threads and open a fresh new thread here.
With your continuous help and support, the past 4 years have been a great adventure and experience. Let's take a fresh start and continue this amazing adventure.
Thank you all!
Hi,
I bought this app and gave it a try since it is the only one I found with REAL background data management capabilities. So, this is a great beginning, although the app is not completely useful to me. I was looking for an automatic background data toggle following WiFi status, I mean, turn on bg data when WiFi is on and turn it off at WiFi shutdown. I know this is just a manual toggle, but I was wondering if I can use the toggle along with any profiler (like Tasker, Setting Profiles, etc). This way, I could set up a rule that triggers on WiFi On/Off and changes bg data status using your widget. Unfortunately, this cannot be done as there is no 'activity' to be associated to under Multi Toggle activities node. So, my suggestion is that you expose any public activity to toggle bg data, so it can be used when setting up rules from any profiler. Of course you can also develop an app to auto turn on/off bg data on wifi on/off... ... a lot of people is waiting for that since bg data has sense when wifi is on in most of the cases. Otherwise, it will drain battery.
Another suggestion, please make an easy way to uninstall when installed as system app (restore to user app or something... just to avoid a manual removal from /system/app).
Thanks!

Thanks for your comment and support.
I will try to add an 'uninstall' procedure... Indeed it will make it much easier for me too
For the public activity, I will see to it too, though I'm not sure it's really recommended, the power-widget has been doing that until 2.3.3 and it was reported as a security hole... Would be nice though.
Just wondering something about activities, in Tasker (or similar app) can you manually specify the package, the class and the parameters? If so, even if it's not public, you might be able to do it!
Don't have the info at hand, but will update this post asap.
I haven't downloaded this app yet, but I found it because it claims to control the background data toggle via a widget. Just to confirm that we're talking about "background data" and not just "auto-sync," correct? On my DROID 2 this option is: settings -> data manager -> data delivery -> Background data.
Any updates on reverting from the system application install? I need to be able to return this phone to pre-root status.
I've found that "auto-sync" only applies to google accounts: gmail, gmail contacts and google calendar on the DROID 2. My primary email is an IMAP account and I'd prefer not to receive these notifications (and ones from other aps) during the evening hours.
My phone also likes to stop syncing randomly, and toggling background data corrects the problem. Going through the maze of settings is just too annoying to be toggling this option on a regular basis.
Also, this thread belongs in the Paid Software Announcement and Discussion forums. By posting here you are gaining an unfair advantage!

Hello and thanks for your interest in this app.
Yes it indeed controls background data, you should see the corresponding setting being actually changed!
And yes it needs to be installed as system app for a number of toggles to work, which is only possible on rooted phones, which luckily is your case! System apps have more rights than user-apps and a number of settings cannot be changed by user apps at all no matter what! Even using su/root feature can't help!
Note that the app will do it for you from the settings. There is no automatic way to move the app back to a user app, yet.
What you can do is try the app for a few minutes to see if it works well for you. Should you have any issues don't hesitate to contact me. You have 15 minutes to try it or get an immediate refund from Google, but I can still cancel the order at any time which will get you a full refund.
PS: I noticed 2 behaviors when installing as system app, either the settings window disappears, then no reboot is necessary, the app is installed in system folder and ready for use. Or the app says it succeeded (or failed) and the settings windows remains open. In this case I noticed it's always installed as system app, but it requires rebooting the phone. Still working on that.

I didn't know about this forum I'm very sorry for this mistake! Any ways to move the thread there?
At the time of creation, I tried contacting a moderator, but not sure it's my browser/computer (tried with Chrome and IE) but could reach the page to find who's moderator.
Anyway, no excuses, will try to contact a moderator asap.
I tried to quickly change my original post thinking that you wouldn't respond so quickly. I spotted the screenshots that clearly show the option to install as a system app, which answered my question.

Any idea when you will implement this? As my edited message above now says, I need the ability to return this phone to pre-root status. How difficult is manually uninstalling a system app like yours? Pardon my ignorance, but I'm only rooted for a specific un-related reason, so I haven't played around in the rooted world much.

Hi,
Gave it a whirl and it seemed to work. Unfortunately, I tried your new "uninstall from system" options and it wound up uninstalling the entire application from my DROID 2. I'll get it back on there when I have some more time to play with it. Just be aware that it does a little more than uninstalling from system.
Is this greyed out heading "(System) Toggles" supposed to stay greyed out once it's installed as a system application? The only indication that a system install was in effect was that the option to install as a system application now said uninstall.
You may want to leave some time for a user to grant su permissions when installing as a system application. I've seen this on other apps. It took a couple tries to be quick enough to allow your app permissions before it reported that it didn't have them.

Well, that's why I initially left this out, because uninstall from system is not as easy as installing to system! I'll try to improve it by moving the app back to user space instead, but then users might end-up with multiple installs... Quite tricky.

This is just informative as I want to make sure users understand how system (or power-widget-based) toggles do work (or do not work)...

I indeed noted that sometimes it failed after being granted su permissions... Note sure how to permanently solve this, but I'll try to put a delay before launching further commands under su process to see if it improves.
Wish it was easier to test it, but unfortunately it often requires rebooting the phone!!!
What does "synchro (system)" control? I figure what the "synchro (power)" version does, but system? Seems to disable background data, but what else?

Actually it controls both background data and auto-sync, enabling or disabling both. It disables both only when both are enabled.

Yeah, I can see what you mean.
Your widget successfully causes the background data checkbox to toggle. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for my needs, however:

Unchecking background data with your widget still does not stop the IMAP emails from coming through, nor does it correct the syncing problem like toggling the option directly does. The phone seems to know that background data is off (as tested by attempting to start the Market), but it doesn't have the same effect. Only thing I noticed is that toggling background data off with your widget leaves a popup asking you to confirm if you go through the system settings and look at the checkbox. Perhaps the setting doesn't take full effect until a user acknowledges this box, which your widget currently does not do. Not sure if that's even possible.

Background data option (in settings or elsewhere) is a settings that can be checked by application, but it doesn't actually prevent any app from using data connections in the background (the warning message when disabling it).
Your IMAP app probably doesn't care about this particular setting.
On 3 phones I tested using the toggle never brought the warning message, even when opening the settings for that option!? On the other hand the warning/confirmation message is always shown when enabling WIFI localization.
Looks like a ROM's bug?
....looks great~ got to try this .
brightness toggle
hi
is there a way to control the brightness levels for each state of the brightness toggle icon?
all in all nice widget tho!
Can;t install app as system
I recently bought your app but I'm having trouble installing it as a system app. Everything seems to work fine when I try to install it, I rebbot my phone, but after reboot the app is still an "user app" and the system toggles dont work...
Could you help me please? Because I'd really love to be abble to use the system toggles (specially the one to toggle System Location).
Thank you

This feature requires a rooted device as explained in app description: "10 System toggles (requires rooted phones to install app to system)"
Are you sure your device is rooted as you mentioned in your PM your /data directory is empty I suspect it's not.
Hi, this is a great app but it won't turn off the location (system) after turn on.
I have to manually go settings > google > untick everything.

Search installed applications in Google Now stops working

Are any of you having issues with the Google Now search of installed applications? I have the checkbox checked in the Google Now settings (Settings -> Phone search -> Apps- Names of installed applications), but sometimes this just stops working until I go into the settings again to uncheck and check it.
This also happens with my Contacts

Yes! This just started for me a couple days ago. The only thing that setting you mentioned above does for me now is search THROUGH installed apps for hits, but no longer brings up the app itself. Unfortunately your fix of checking and unchecking doesn't seem to do the trick for me (I'm on a Note 2).
For anyone who's not familiar with this behavior, it's a really nice feature of the main Google Now bar everyone should have on their home screen:
Punching in part of an app name in the Google Now bar pulls up hits including the app itself.
It's very convenient to for example turn on your phone, type in "Scan", and get as the top hit the Genius Scan app for example (you might only remember the "Scan" part of the name of the app).
Or type in "Face" and the Facebook app shows up. (Partials work.)
It's very similar to the iOS left-swipe search, the Windows 7 Start button, and OSX Spotlight.
Hunting and pecking through the app list is for chumps.
After today's Google+ update patch, this issue is now resolved.

Working US Internet Tethering

Hey guys, long time lurker here. I just got finished tinkering around with my galaxy gear over the last 2 days (got it for xmas =)) and I figured out a way to get internet tethering working on a non rooted stock note 3. I will post a quick guide shortly. I'm not very good at writing them and I am assuming you know how to root and install/sideload apps by yourself either with wondershare or adb commands. Will be up shortly =)
I used EasyTether for this as I had purchased it awhile ago and they had a bluetooth tablet app that I could use. I have not tried this with PDANet/FoxFi but I am pretty sure it should work as it is a similar setup.
-- Setting Up
0. Plug your galaxy gear into the cradle and you should be running Null rom and have usb debugging/unknown sources enabled...
1. Start by downloading the reverse usb tethering app from xda
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345
2. Use WonderShare or adb push to install
HackConnectivityService.apk
installed.apk
3. Open the newly installed "USB Tunnel" app on your galaxy gear
4. Start up AndroidTool.exe on your pc and hit the connect button
5. After about 20 seconds your gear should prompt for a superuser access screen. Go ahead and hit ok or grant access
6. After the connection is made you should now be able to open the google play store and sign into your gmail account. If google account manager crashes, continue on to the next step and try again after step 11.
7. On your galaxy gear goto the regular android settings screen and click on the Xposed section. Click on framework and go ahead and update/install the framework and reboot the galaxy gear.
8. With the galaxy gear now rebooted, go into the android settings -> xposed -> and this time hit the modules button. Scroll down and click on the hackconnectivity application. With that app now enabled go ahead and reboot the galaxy gear again. (not sure if necessary but I think I recall it saying it has to be rebooted)
9. With the gear now properly setup return to the android settings -> xposed -> modules -> hackconnectivity and click on the WIFI button.
10. Your galaxy gear will now assume its internet connection will always be wifi even if connected via usb or bluetooth
11. You should be now able to sign into your gmail account by click on the playstore icon if you were not able to before.
-- Getting Tethering Working
12. Using either the PlayStore or sideloading the Amazon Appstore - download Easytether on your phone - and on your galaxy gear install the Easytether Tablet application.
13. Open the Easytether application on your phone and and select Bluetooth Tethering
14. On your galaxy gear open the EasyTether Tablet app and select your phone from the list of devices on the bottom of the screen. After the connection is established your galaxy gear should now be online with bluetooth and feel free to remove it from the charing cradle.
15. I was able to install Netflix on my watch, login, and start an episode of Star Trek while I was writing this for you guys. I hope this gets you guys online with your watches! =)
I will have to check this out and let ya know if I can get it to work. I switched to an international rom just to get native Bluetooth tethering. This will be a nice option for others that don't have a working solution
Nice work and write up.

This is a nice work around ! Although you should simply only have to load the xposed module & activate tethering by what ever means you choose. A few of these steps are not required.
I think I might include this xposed module by default in my rom to save you guys the hassle. If this is confirmed working someone please send me a PM and I will include it by default.
Doesn't seem to work after reboot.

Confirmed working. I installed the HackConnectivityService.apk, then installed PdaNet Tablet, then installed PdaNet+ on phone. Activated HackConnecticityService in xposed. Then rebooted.
Activated and connected PdaNet on both devices. Opened Browser, browser worked. Then opened Google play tryed to connect. "Google Play crashed" (That is what was expected) Then enabled HackConnectivity in the app settings to Wifi. Re atempted connecting with "Google Play" I was able to setup and login.
Nice work, but yes less steps worked. :good:
@fOmey - This would be a wonderful addition to Null_ US users could now use Google Play. And PdaNet+ is free So the original way of getting Bluetooth works, we were just missing this xposed plugin.
Is there any way to do this with the gear running the stock rom?

Have not tested this but, You should be able to. Just install xposed and HackConnectivityService and then install what ever connecting software you perfer. PdaNet is free, I would recommend that to start with.

And PdaNet+ is free So the original way of getting Bluetooth works, we were just missing this xposed plugin.

when i tick the PdaNet+ "Activate BT Service" i get an alert " Internet not detected on your phone. Please make sure you have good data service and try again" it happens every time so i cant get past this part to try and connect to N3.

On your phone open PdaNet+ check "Activate Bluetooth Server" Say Yes to making your phone visible.
On your Gear open PdaNet Tablet click "Configure" then click "Android Bluetooth" Click "Tap here to start scanning.." You should see your phone's's name appear, Click on it, That should bring you back to the main PdaNet screen on the Gear. Then if you look at the bottom you should see part of a button, just a small part. Click on it. Sometimes it's hard to do so, but just keep trying you'll click it. once click you should see PdaNet is connected!
So if you can't get past the phone portion with PdaNet+, try disabling your WiFi and see if that works. Try opening a web page and make sure you have internet access.

when i tap the second barely visible button i get a black screen and then when i get phone screen back on i get "PdaNet Tablet has stopped" i tried rebooting the phone a couple times, ticking/unticking the built in phone BT tether option and all tries lead to "PdaNet Tablet has stopped" after i discover and select my phone and hit that barely visible button.
not sure if there is anything else i can try?

On your phone try disabling your WiFi, try opening a web page and make sure you have internet access. If you do then on your Phone Open Pdanet+ and see if you can select "Activate Bluetooth Server" if you can, then go back into your gear, PdaNet Tablet and try to reconnect them, once your done reconnecting them then try clicking that hidden button. (Alternatively you can try open the browser on your gear instead and see if a web page opens.

Really odd. Not sure what is causing the issue. Check out Google play there are other options available instead of PdaNet. (not that I dont want to continue to help ya, just not sure where to go from here for ya other than that.)
(Also don't want to hijack this thread. Sorry Man)

thanks for the help and if the point of the thread is to get tethering working then i feel that is what we are discussing and should help all of us
I know the steps are reducible but I just wanted to give everyone the best chance of success doing this. Glad I could help you all out. I was kinda rushing writing because I was excited I could help and I had to write it before my lady got home and would yell at me for tinkering around and not watching a movie with her . Cheers

No settings app?

It would appear that I am not the first to ask this question and from the threads that I have found so far, there is no answer.
I have rooted with Null 23 and launch with the stock software. However when I scroll the apps (S voice, pedometer, apps etc) there is no settings icon any more. What to do next?
If there is a thread that I have missed which explains this, I would appreciate a link unless this has stumped everyone.
Any help would be appreciated.
Do not select restore when reconnecting to gm. Select reset
You should be able to select the Settings app to be viewable again from Gear Manager -> My Apps

Add the Settings App to your favorites again for it to be viewable when you scroll side to side on your watch.

Thanks.
1. Tried 'adding settings', but it is not listed in the apps section in GM to be added to favourites
2. Went in to GM and selected disconnect, then reconnected, but no option to reset or restore.
3. Uninstalled then reinstalled GM, connected with NFC.
- Notice said "backup data has been deleted from mobile device, gear to be reset to factory settings".
- Selected OK for reset, was asked for NFC again.
- NFC was "device not recognised". Connected manually instead.
- Selected Touchwiz launcher (not Nova)
- SETTINGS is now listed on the GG but NOT in GM as either favourite or in apps.
- I then removed a couple of favourites from GM and when GG updated, no settings app again.
Circle completed (from point 1 above), I need to find a way to get the settings app to appear on the GM otherwise no settings on phone.
i have this problem too What I noticed is if the gear manager is open on your phone this will remove the icon from the GG. I just use GM to sort what I need out then back out so it because minimised (but still running) then restart my GG

Interesting, thank you :good:
So if I understand this correctly, if I set up what I need in GM such as adding apps and reorganising them etc, then minimising GM... all I need do is restart (not reboot) the GG and my latest GM settings will be applied... PLUS the settings icon will be present?

UPDATE: Issue is with Gear Manager no longer having the 'SETTINGS' option for a rooted Gear
Unfortunately the problem did not resolve itself, so I went back to basics and tested a number of options out and what I have diagnosed is that it is an issue with Gear Manager on a rooted device.
To re-cap: Initially, I had the settings app (through Touchwiz) on the GG, but this disappeared when I synced with GM after rooting and adding Null 23 custom ROM. If I re-flashed Null 23, 'settings' would appear until I started fiddling around with GM options. You may have noticed yourself that GM will not let you update its software if GG is rooted.
- I decided to then take the GG back to stock, reinstalled GM on my Note 3 and 'settings' was listed on both the Note and GG. This remained on both when I synced and edited through GM.
- Next I rooted and added Null 23 again while leaving the GM installation alone and then connected through bluetooth (not NFC). The GG had the Touchwiz 'settings' app, but GM DID NOT.
- Fortunately GM was already set up with a couple of custom notifications (GO SMS etc) so I have not needed to sync GG with GM.
- I am now convinced that if I were to rearrange "My Apps" on GM and sync, 'settings' would disappear as it is no longer listed on GM.
- I have not used GM for anything other than connecting to my Note 3 and so far so good. Whether accessing Samsung Apps would result in it also changing My Apps, I do not want to chance.
If someone finds a way of getting the 'settings' app to appear on GM with a rooted GG, I would be interested to try it out.
what version of gear manager are you using?
V1.6.132701. This was the latest update in-app two days ago. I did read elsewhere about a V1.7 that some were having issues with.
Also: changed a setting in custom notifications on GM and the 'settings' icon is still present on the GG. I am still not convinced that it would remain if I reordered the icons on the My Apps section though.

apps not starting when switching on the phone

Hi,
Since I uninstalled both Greenify and hibernator some apps are not starting anymore when I switch on the phone. (podcast republic, Gmail and Three in touch. There might be others that are playing up but haven't noticed that.) Three in touch and podcast republic are set to start automatically and Gmail I think always have always done this. Any idea what is going on and what to do to make them work properly.
Running OOS 5.0.4 and not rooted

I will suggest
1.Try booting the phone in safe mode and then check
2.For the required app goto app info > battery >turn on background activity (if not) AND also you can try turning off the battery optimisation setting for the specific app
3.Install SD MAID ( sideload the pro version from net) and in the app control section try turning on individual boot up settings for the specific apps <<<I THINK IT REQUIRES ROOT>>>
4.Atlast you can try reinstalling those apps
:good:
Thanks
Tried option one but didn't seem to have an impact
Option two, I can't see an option to turn on or off background activity for Gmail or podcast republic. Switching off battery optimization for three in touch seems to have sorted that problem but not for podcast republic. Gmail doesn't seem to have this option.
Option 3 haven't tried
Option 4 I might try tomorrow.
Thanks for the tips. At least one problem is solved now.
