SD card question - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was having a certain issue and it was suggested I format my SD card.
I did and now it says it is damaged and won't mount. Can it be fixed or is it trash?

Be sure to format it using FAT32 and do it when it's
plugged into it's adapter and your computer.
Here is the windows fat32 formatter app which will
format your sdcard correctly using fat32:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/45687485/Fat32Formatter.exe
Once it's formatted it should mount and work like new.
Good luck!

I had same issue. You can try the fat32 if not it might be time for a new card. Sorry but I never had fat32 work out for me. I have learned to buy card at best buy with the protection they offer so when it goes bad I just head over and swap it out. Saves on the headache of mailing it in and waiting for warranty replacement.

Help formatting sd card

i have tried this with 2 different micro sd cards. both 1gb. 1 sandisk, the other is a samsung. both work fine in the g1 and if i connect to my laptop (windows) i can access the files and everything as normal. when i right click and tell it to format however it ejects itself and i have to remount. i do not have an adapter to put it in my card reader, so this is the only way i can do it. can anyone tell me what i'm either doing wrong or a quick fix for this?
dont know man cuz i didnt hve that problem sorry dude
The g1 doesn't like it when you do that. If you don't have the adapter. Your only option that I know of is to format it is from android itself in the system options. Sorry to hear about your situation

I have/had the same issue, so i will tell you what i did and maybe it will help. I formatted my sd card on the RC33 update in fat32 and from the computer.(when the g1 liked the sd card).
My suggestion if you don't want to downgrade to upgrade..is to stick the card in another phone that can connect to your computer and format it that way.
Upgraded to cupcake (what ever version you want). Then the g1 was reading my 4gb card wrong. So i removed all info on the sd card just copied to folder on pc and formatted the sdcard through the phone. From there it was reading the card correctly. To go on, i then partitioned with apps2sd. Placed all info back on sd card and waa laa...like magic...or dream...or hero...i dunno confusing...who's on first?

brick Sdcard. Can i help me :( Pls...

Hi,
i'm having serious problems with the SD card on my Milestone. Let me explain :
1. If i try any generic app which tries to access the SD card, it says it's not there (Camera says "Please insert a SD card", other apps say similar warnings). And i can't use "update.zip" on recovery mode
2. Settings>SD card & phone storage says Unavailable to everything, like if the card is not mounted.
3. Recovery mode say "can't open /cache/recovery/command"
Any ideas ?
Try cleaning the gold contacts on the sd card an the sd card holder...
Also try seeing if the sd card works on an external sd card reader
Hope this helps

If it works fine in a card reader, it might be the card slot in the Milestone that might be broken.

Have you ever been brick sdcard? Also possible that so many people use android brick sdcard failed. I think the milestone card reader works fine: (
I would recommend taking your SD card, backing up the contents to your computer, and then doing a non-quick format on the SD card. There's something corrupt about the filesystem of the SD card that the phone does not like, and a format of the SD card should repair things again.

What format are you putting it in? If it is in NTFS, I believe it will not recognize it.

Problems with 32GB SD Card (SanDisk)

Hi all,
I have a 32GB SD Card (SanDisk) in my Z1. I am using Media Go to transfer my music from my PC to my SD Card on my Z1.
The problem is that only 'some' of my music is transferred across correctly and other albums/tracks play as if they have been encrypted in some sort of way. The music I am transferring is playing correctly on my PC, it is only when I transfer it that it becomes a problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
*Just to add, I have no problem transferring the same music across to my 8GB card. I have two brand new 32GB cards and have the same problem of only being able to transfer about half the music, the rest is unrecognisable.*
Have you tried not using media go?

I am using Media Go and straight transferring across to the SD card
Maybe you can try formatting the 32GB SD card and copying all the music onto there again to see if it helps

Re formatted (exFAT) both the 32GB cards I have and still the problem remains that some data/music is not getting transferred. I have just tested a 16GB card (same make and specs as one of the 32GB cards) from my tablet and this works and a 32GB card that didn't work in my Z1 works in my Xperia tablet Z so it seems my Z1 is having a problem with SD cards over 16GB for some reason I don't know
Try Fat32? I find it gives me the least amount of problems. I have a sandisk 64gb in my Z1 and it works just fine. Windows won't format in fat32 natively for such a large size so maybe try the format sd option in android. I believe it does fat32 automatically.

Seconded. Absolutely zero problems with my 64GB Sandisk card formatted as FAT32. Always format SD cards on your phone.

Agree, I will suggest to try format in FAT32 because all the SDHC 32GB microSD are meant to use FAT32 natively so I don't know why you formatted a 32GB card in exFAT.

Windows will not because you have to use a specified application to format 64GB SDXC natively in exFAT to FAT32.
Z1 support exFAT and will not format in FAT32.

Absolutely not true. All the High-End devices not support all the formats like exFAT so is recommended to format them via specific application on PC and then insert the card to device. BTW, the phone will format even fake cards without problems, PC will not and you can check them as well.

If you want an SD card to work on a specific phone, why wouldn't you format it on that phone?

Is that specific phone using a special unknown partition system for the card? I don't think so. The phones are this days build with market standards including SDHC and SDXC compatibility. SDHC natively use FAT32, SDXC natively use exFAT. Not all phones support SDXC so the card have to be formatted in FAT32 to make it functional and the only way is to use specific application on PC. Formatting the SD on PC also is more efficient than OS of the phones and the main reason is that OS of any phone can't verified a faulty or fake SD card so you can losing data without even know why.

Sorry man, you are usually on point, but with this you are talking nonsense.
I have never seen or heard of an Android phone which didn't use FAT32 or exFAT, nor one that made arbitrary partions. Further, if the phone doesn't support exFAT, obviously it won't format the card to use the exFAT file system. The bit about a PC being more efficient is just total nonsense. I have formatted several different size/brand SD cards on this phone and others without having issues using them in the phone or a PC or other Android device, even. If you can satisfactorily back up anything you've said, I'll change my mind.

I make you and example, I got HTC HD2 with latest Android ICS ported from NEXUS, it not support and it not recognize a 64GB SDXC in exFAT, the only way to make working that card on HD2 is to format it in FAT32 on PC.

Right, but a phone which support exFAT and FAT32 as well will not format the exFAT card to FAT32 end even if he dose the card have huge risk to be compromise. Speaking from experience.

I never said you CAN'T format the card on the phone. It will work anyway but on PC the formatting will be more deeply efficient because you using specified application to do so. On High-End phones the formatting can be good too but you can't say is well done like on PC.
All the Sl..ts making Blo..bs, but there is always someone who do it much better! Am I wrong?
let's go back to the topic.I have the same problem on my Z1 as well.
will this related to a slow (class 4) speed sd card?

Absolutely not, the class of the card is not an issue at all. If you have a SDHC have to be in FAT32, check it, just in case. The partition can be corrupted then will be recommended to format the card how you like.
But if your problem is the same as OP mentioned with the same application, to me the app is the main problem. Try to move the files with different application or use different media player to see if the issue still there.
I have put the 32GB cardin my Tablet Z and it's working without error but I can still not get anything over 16GB running on my Z1
Seems a bit strange to me unless it's a random 4.3 problem though I haven't heard any wide spread issues

Yes, seems a bit strange and I will suggest to check the card on PC with h2testw, just in case. If everything is ok with the card then is your phone and probably Android it self, in this scenario I will consider to flash different .290 FW.

I'm using 32GB SanDisk extreme uhs1 and never had a single issue. (well, once cos it was from a faulty batch, but your card doesn't seem to have any of my issues before replacement)
Don't use media go. I think that that's what ruins your music by encoding it like iTunes which z1 doesn't like.

SD card troubles

Hey guys, there was a long time I wasn't copying anything to my SD card, and recently tried to copy few files to the card. I plugged it with USB cable throught my Z1, I could read files, but I couldn't write to SD card anything. I thought maybe something with software got damned, so I put my card into adapter and plug it into sd card reader in my PC. I was happy coz I thought my problem has just flew away, but after my files has been moved to SD card I refreshed explorer, and there wasn't any of my file, it was like I moved files to nowhere. After that I decided to format the card, plugged it into my phone went to settings and.. my phone couldn't format the card, free space hasn't changed at all, just nothing. I switched on my pc and tried it there, same thing, after starting formatting at the end I just got error message "Windows was unable to complete the format". Anyone know what is wrong? Sorry for my grammar.
I have some Sandisc card that do the same. After checking that manual write protection is off and trying to format with other tools also beside Windows default formating tool I haven't figured out how to bring SD card back to life.

[Q] Micro SD Card Issue

Hey all, I've been using a Meenova USB micro SD card reader for extra storage since my N5. After getting my N6, I've been noticing that after unmounting the drive and plugging it in to my computer, I get an error that the drive needs fixed. Run the fix and it's fine. I use Stickmount app to mount and unmount the sd card since it doesn't seem the kernels I have used support native USB OTG mounting. Just wondering if anyone knows why this is now an issue and if anyone else has run into this.

No I haven't. That's a good idea. If it's an issue with what's on the card though, wouldn't transferring that data back after formatting possibly put me back at square one?
