Switching to Alpha - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I only saw a couple specs but the galaxy alpha finally has metal and looks amazing. I actually went to best buy and held it and it feels great. The only thing holding me back is how the battery life is not as good as the s5. Also the camera isn't as good and it's only 720p. Anyone thinking about switching. I really like the hardware but I don't know if it's worth it. I also thought about waiting for the Galaxy s6. I have really high hopes for it because I think it'll be a really high end phone with metal covering and amazing specs.

Upgrade from galxy s2, worth it?

Depends on what you want to do with it. Do you need the extra screen real estate, do you have use for the stylus. What I did? I went to a shop and played a while with the note. Tried the stylus, the extra software that comes with it, the new calendar and most of all...the size of the device. I decided to buy the Note because it was more productive than my S2. Keep in mind that the Note feels a little slower than a S2.
No one else can make the decision for you...you have to give it a try yourself, if possible.
On the stylus issue.. Anyway I can link it up to a pc?

try it out. Its mostly an yes but there are few no's too...
IF u get it make sure u use it for a few weeks. ( I hope they have 1 month return policy if u dint like it. ) The size does need getting used to. But once that is done, its an amazing device
Theres another thread around here with alot of post. Check it out.

Size is the biggest factor. You will look an idiot making calls in public there is no denying that, also it is more sluggish then s2. In my estimate bit like the original gs.
Buil is cheap and feels plasticky similar to s2.
You can get a bluetooth to avoid ever holding the phone against your ear in public or use the hands free kit.
Screen resolution is brilliant as surfing the net. Watching YouTube, videos, camera and video recording is brilliant. the best I have seen in this regards.
Has sd card slot another pro.
I would also suggest wait for upcoming HTC devices which will inmho more suitable and practical.
If you plan to use it as a media player I would consider holding off for now. Also not a lot of people can stand the grainy display a pentile has over an RGB stripe.. Better check the actual unit out before deciding.

I upgraded from the Galaxy S2 too. Both are great phones but the Note wins because of it's size. Worth upgrading definitely.

I just got my white Galaxy Note today and from the second that I opened the box, I was in love.
This thing is beautiful; its light, the screen is incredible, the stylus is practical and it's very fast.
I was really worried about upgrading from the SGS2, thinking that it would be a "SGS2 XL" but the overall experience is something completely new.
Only my opinion, obviously but I highly doubt you'll be disappointed
Sent from my Galaxy Note using Tapatalk
It's definitely worth it. You get used to it easily. It has all the features you need and battery lasts way more than Galaxy S2 with a proper kernel.
I've got them both and I could say that Sgs2 is smoother definitely but Galaxy Note form factor is amazing and the screen, apart from the black clipping and the banding that I hope Supercurio will solve with his app, is tremendous brilliant and clear for an easy reading.
The S-Pen is nice also but a little bit inaccurate when you write oin the screen.
If Ics will improove the snappiness and solve the screen issues it will be a monster for sure but for the moment I keep also Sgs2 with me everytime because it is a more supported phone by the community and also because, with the right modding, its battery is endless.
Hope it will help in your choice
I love my Note. It's big, at first, but now I find the S2, which my girlfriend has, too cramped and feel the Note as a normal size. Sure, it's less snappy than the S2, but that's no problem for me, cause it's still fast. And with ICS coming, it's bound to be even faster. I don't say either one is better, the Note has more to offer for me with the bigger real estate and stylus.
You'll have to make your own choice, but if I had to choose again, I would definately go for the Note again! You can wait for (even) better phones to come out, but whatever you do, better phones will come out whatever you choose. Enjoy the moment.

As what others have mentioned it depends on your usage, I was a short time Galaxy S2 user but I ended up returning it due to defects. I also had a chance to get to use the Galaxy Note for 7 days and noticed that it was not playing my media properly which is not acceptable for a device that is marked for 'HD', I believe that topic is extensively discussed here. But I really did like the device as I didnt need to bring my tablet along with me, size is absolutely perfect even for my small-ish hands, if ICS fixes the issue I'll probably get one back and ditch my tablet.

All questions belong in the Q&A Section please!
I am coming from an SGS2; I'd say definitely yes -- the screen + hardware is sweet. Can't go back...
I had HUGE reservations in getting Note due to it's size but I eventually took the plunge because of my smartphone addiction.
Out of all the high end handsets I have had this year (Sensation XL, Titan, Nexus Galaxy, SG2, Note, Iphone 4S), I must admit Note is my favourite.
It does have it's issues but so does every other handset out there.

There is an artical on the portal at the moment, but i would say its down to size realy no matter the spec.
If you are very physical or have tight jeans among other factors i would stick with the S2
I think the note has quite sharper images than the s2 which i used to dread for..

Convince me the One is better than the S4.

I was really set on the One, but started reading about all the issues people were having with the screens and gaps and speaker noise. I started reading up on the S4 and thought maybe a change would be nice, since I've been with HTC since the Hero days. I would like to hear some personal experiences and feedback. I got some hands on with the One and it was smooth as can be, but haven't had a chance to play with the s4 yet. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am a hardcore perfectionist and had VERY high expectations for the One.
I will tell you that i have an almost-noticeable-with-the-bare-eye cluster of about 4 stuck pixels (at 450+ dpi you really have to look hard to see it), a 1mm gap in the middle of my zero-gap-construction device, and a home button that isn't as sensitive as it should be (which I know will be getting fixed in the next OTA).
Even being a hardcore perfectionist and demanding a LOT from this phone, I LOVE IT AND WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANY OTHER PHONE. It is without a doubt the most amazing piece of technology I've ever owned.
If you've been with HTC for awhile, now is not the time to bail out. This is the best phone they've made by a mile. Sense 5 is sick and the look and build quality is iPhone level. If you've held a GSIII, you know how the GSIV is going to feel. Not in same league imo.

I'm also trying to decide between the s4 and one. I listen to music a lot so the one def wins on that respect.
The one thing holding me back from getting the HTC one is that the aluminum back I'm guessing will be much more susceptible to scratches. I like to run my phones caseless, so just wondering if any current one owners could comment on how their phone is holding up so far? I went to sprint and the display model already had a chip on the back so had me worried.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Honestly, its all about personal preference. The One and the GS4 really are two totally different devices, the one really is a more polished device in my opinion. As I sit here and type this I have an HTC One and a GS4 sitting right next to me and after using the One for over a week then switching to the GS4 there is a big difference in performance. Now the truth is that out of the box the GS4 basically has more features than any other phone on the market but at the expense of performance. To me the One simply does everything faster, whether opening and closing apps, switching between apps, accessing the camera....etc..... the one simply does it with virtually no lag where as the GS4 stutters ever so slightly. I have gone as far as turning off every feature I could and even though that did help, its still no where near as responsive as the one and because of that I will stick with the One. Sorry but touchwiz for whatever reason is a bloated mess of a UI filled with features that are impractical which also hinders the performance of the device. I really wanted a 5" device and even with the plastic build it still a pleasant device to look at and hold but the performance simply falls short. Also, I know I can root the device but in the age of quad core devices with at least 2 gigs of ram, rooting shouldn't be the only way to increase performance.

I wouldn't say "top notch", but saying they are better than any other pack-in headphone would still be a disservice to these.

I love my One. I was set on getting the S4 at first when the argument seemed to be aluminum vs plastic, because the S4 seemed more powerful, but the One really is more than just an amazing looking device. I love the camera, I don't understand why people feel they need to zoom in on pictures, because if they don't, 4 MP is actually perfectly fine since it's a higher resolution than 1080. Pictures with the One are amazing no matter what the situation, which is very rare with cell phone cameras, I found myself being excited about having a cell phone camera for the first time since my very first flip phone. I tell people comparing the One and the S4's cameras is comparing quality to size, and I always prefer quality. Besides that the screen is amazing, but you probly won't be able to tell too much difference with the pixel density since they're both so dense. The speakers are also amazing, I've thought sound was coming from my computer speakers a few times that was actually coming from the phone. The call quality is great too, I can hear people much clearer that I used to have problems talking with on my evo 3d. It doesn't come with much bloatware and I haven't had any bit of lag yet, even with lots of apps running at once and playing graphics intensive games. I have also been very impressed with the battery life, I've used it constantly since I bought it and have not had it go under 10% before the end of the day, so I can actually play games on my phone now without worrying about the next time I need to plug it in.
My only gripe with the phone is the capacitive buttons, they only work when you press on the white part, so it's much less surface area than I'm used to, but it's not such a big deal, just a small annoyance to get used to. Sense isn't an annoyance on this phone, and any annoyances like blinkfeed or no quick settings in the notification pulldown can be easily solved.
They're both great phones, but when I did my own comparison of the two, I thought the S4s new features were more software gimmicks than improvements to me. The One has software gimmicks like Zoes and blinkfeed, but it has quite a few hardware improvements that were powerful enough to impress me.

Initial 24 hour review

I first want to say that over the years i've had the resource of XDA to let me get the most out of my phones and really appreciate everyone on the site. I'm a huge phone nerd and have owned the following to give some perspective.
HTC EVO 4g
HTC EVO 3D
Samsung Galaxy 2 (Epic 4g Touch)
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
HTC EVO 4g LTE
Samsung Galaxy S3
Apple Iphone 5
and so Ive been on both sides of the HTC v. Samsung war and even tried the iphone(2 weeks and couldnt stand it)each time I try a HTC I come rushing back to the galaxy series. Now that I have the S4 and decided not to even try the One. I decided to write a quick review after the inital 24 hour period.
Got the phone at BB simply due to the amount they were giving me for the S3($250), got the phone and right out of the gate did a factory reset, set the phone up and disabled/removed all the bloatware I could(granted not that much). The build quality is something that is not given its fair due because it still is plastic, but it is a solid high quality phone and rivals any phone ive held.
The screen is hands down the best ive seen including the LCD used in the HTC's and the Iphone. With all the new features and sensors the phone does almost anything you can think of like waking up when the sensors realize you are reaching for the phone! Also another cool thing is controlling my Direct TV or TV with my phone!
The sound quality is much improved over the S3 and I bring this up mainly in terms of bluetooth streaming, bringing back all the gestures the music player is VERY nice.
The 4.2.2 menus do take a little to get used to and this is coming from a touchwiz user for years, but make the experience much more streamlined once you get familiar.
Nothing I have thrown at the phone yet has even slowed it down, from syncing all of my accounts, playing music and browsing the phone all at the same time the phone just keeps chugging along. Which even makes the S3 look slow.
Now on to what has reall impressed me so far and thats the battery life, I charged the phone fully while powered off once i got the phone and trying to run the battery down to allow me to do another full charge has proved to be a chore. With HEAVY wifi, screen time and app use and standby overnight im still at 36% battery!!
All in all i know its only the first day of owning the phone, but i couldnt be any happier or impressed. The hard part is waiting for accesories to come out.
But for anyone on the fence or not sure I would say take the plunge you won't be disappointed, and you will have the best phone out!
Good stuff. Yes, I agree. Some of the gesture features are actually quite awesome....and I've never been a big fan of gestures. But the wake up by reaching towards the phone feature is awesome. I used it twice (unfortunately) last night when I woke up in the middle of the night and wanted to know what time it was.
And yes, the battery life is fantastic. On the first couple of charges, I averaged about 4 hours of screen on time and that's also accounting for me being in a weak 3g area and leaving my mobile data on (for testing purposes).
I also want to add(it won't let me edit my original post) is that i usually always HAVE TERRIBLE service at work and since ive had this phone can actually make and receive calls and texts. And while around town data has been MUCH improved, streaming pandora is no longer something I could only dream of but a reality(with the high quality audio enabled). Browsing the web has been much quicker.
If anyone has questions feel free to ask.
i dont have the phone yet...im still debating if its much of an upgrade frkm the s3....but i do wanna know if it has the feature where u can be on the phone and can browse the net at the same time (s3 has this feature)...tia...

Nothing yet, though I'm coming from the E4GT so of course it seems a lot better.
It does not have this for 3g, but i have been able to do so while on wifi and have read it is capable while on LTE.
The s3 did do this while on 3g, this might be the only thing ive noticed that the s3 has the ability to do but not the s4.
No i have no dislikes so far for the s4, i think the 5in screen on the s4 is perfect. Ive messed around with the note2 and just not my cup of tea...but in regards to the s4 it has better specs than the note2 while still having a big screen.

Ok.....I'll bite.
#1 --> Price is too high. Note 2 premiered at this price but is larger and has a digitizer (Phablet). Way overpriced in my opinion compared to other new devices (at least on Sprint).
Coming from the S3, I find the build for the S4 very cheap feeling. It has a bit of a "hollow" sound to it. Also do not like the body style compared to the S3. It is boxier, more like the iphone5 with the chrome ring around it, and doesn't feel as good in my hand. When putting it to my ear it digs in a bit and not comfortable. I would rather see the power button back on top and not stick out so much. Last thing for now is how the camera sticks out (unlike the S3) and the phone sits right down on it.
Once I get a good case for it a lot of these gripes will disappear for me. However, for the cost of the device I was hoping for more.
There are far more positives than negatives but you didn't ask for those.
Do I think it is a worthwhile upgrade from the S3? Only if you have an upgrade to burn or upgrade every time a new phone comes out. Otherwise, an S3 with the right custom rom and tweaks gives a pretty good experience.
My $0.02.
Op.. you said that BB gave you $250 for the S3? How does that work if you don't mind me asking. Do they offer some type of trade in deal or was your contact up? I still have a year to go but the HTC one and the S4 seem very interesting

Find your phone on there and print the value off(just in case they try to hassel you) but take the phone in with the charger and anything you have like box or anything(just to ensure you get the highest value)
if you are not out of contract you might want to swap an old phone on your line so the One is not tied to the account. but my S3 was on my line and I didnt have an issue, but they put the value of the phone on a giftcard and then use that gift card towards the s4.
They buy back alot of stuff, i had a couple ps3 games and what not, but just find the value and go to a store.

Oh I love my SGS4 too! I've been more amazed at the fast development than the actual phone itself! I feel secure in knowing I made the right choice
Loving mine, too. I've had it for a bit over 2 weeks now and it was a bit of a learning curve coming off a long line of HTC phones (the S3 in my sig is my wife's), but I'm at home now. And it's so nice to have a phone that works so well compared to all the naggy little problems the HTC's always had.
Im coming from an S3 and really digging the new 1080p crisp screen. Out of the box the S4 feels a little sluggish compared to the S3 even with the latest OTA.
I want it! ;D
I'm very impressed. I actually ran mine stock for a week and out of the box it is impressive. The camera is as good if not better than my wife's Polaroid!

Absolutely loving this phone. Still learning and getting the hang of all the little tricks it can do, but my jump from the S2 has been magnificent thus far. Smooth like butter, fast as lightning, battery life is outstanding, screen looks amazing. Now I'm just patiently waiting for Team Venum's ROMs to be released...then I'll be in S4 heaven.
EDIT: A final thing I'd like to add that I didn't anticipate when I purchased the phone. I was seriously thinking of switching from Sprint because I had MAJOR issues in terms of phone service and reception, not to mention I'd hardly ever see 4G. Because I live in Chicago and work(ed) for US Cellular, I was aware of the details involving their purchase of the Chicagoland area US Cellular customer base and data towers, so I decided to stick around in hopes that service would improve over time. But once I got this phone, the improvement in signal was astonishing. Have yet to find a spot without service and 4G all day.
yea the phone is perfect it simply is the best android phone out there period, but ya only issue with getting it when it comes out would be waiting for development to progress =) o well it will come ill be patient the phone is worth it <3 and i came from an s2 as well!
and actually its not a bad thing waiting for more development is a good thing so i can enjoy stock rom LOL instead of a custom rom of my choosing, anyway to anyone who may wonder, this is the best android phone period imo =)

Well the plastic vs metal is completely a eye of the beholder type of deal, some people say it feels cheap and others like how it's light smooth and nice in the hand. Personally I like it.
Plastic cover allows for easy access to the battery and SD Card, and it scratches less than aluminum. And anyways you can grab a metal battery cover if you want they're pretty cheap.
But.... On the price.. I definitely agree completely lol. :banghead:

To buy or not buy a One?

I've been researching this phone a whole lot because I plan on buying this next month sometime, but a few things are unclear:
What is this phone like? A lot of people suffer from dead pixels, poor build quality, etc.
It also seems HTC is in the verge of bankruptcy. They're not doing too well sales wise and top executives are leaving.
It kinda makes me a bit nervous.

Heh, HTC has had hit in sales. Bad one at that but they are not even close to bankruptcy. Not even close. It will few years for that even if current things continue. They still have market cap of around 250 billion $. What is happening is not ideal. In fact it is bad, but it is not the end game yet.
Built quality issues were more widespread in early units. The smaller issues like small gaps between the top and bottom speaker grill and body still persist but those are really minor issues. The other issues have reduced in frequency (at least frequency of it being reported here at XDA ).
You can always return the phone if it is not up to your standards. It should not happen on flagship, but these days almost all flagships are hit by such issues as initially most are rushed products.
There are plenty of threads here about how the phone it. It is mixed bag for me, but it is a beautifully built phone. Has its quirks with unconventional button layout, unconventional Sense 5 etc. But that is personal choice in the end. If you can go play with the demo piece for a while at store near you before making purchase. But overall it is good phone. The only other phone that really competes with it is S4. I wont consider any other phone.
The One is a rather simple friend.

Both the HTC One Developer Edition and the Samsung Galaxy S4 (GS4) are my first Android phones. I returned the GS4 because 9gb of application storage was not acceptable. I have, literally, installed every available custom ROM because I really do not like Sense 5. I enjoy Blinkfeed, but IMHO it should be a scrollable widget instead of the default homescreen. Yes the One's bootloader can be/is unlocked, but none of the available ROM are particularly functional or impressive. If you buy the One, you'll likely choose an improved stock ROM rather than a completely custom ROM in order to maximize the camera functionality. I really dislike the camera app. I also disliked the GS4 camera app. In fact, I haven't found an Android camera app as functional as the 3rd party camera app I had on my iPhone.
My build quality seems fine. I am not finicky. My device IS NOT gapless, but I really don't care. My screen don't seem to have any dead pixels. If it did, with a 480 pixel density, I could never see something so small.
All in all, the One is a solid phone. I definitely wouldn't buy it for market price again. I'm not too sure about HTC solvency, but the One seems to have a strong development community, so the phone will unlikely ever be irrelevant.
buy it.
you only hear from the vocal minority on here regarding quality control issues, and it seems that people here are looking for problems to complain about. every htc one owner i've physically spoken to has had nothing but great things to stay about it
Martin... Its a great phone. Sense 5 is a step closer to stock android (u so love) than TW.
It feels great in the hand, premium build quality (Google for earlier build flaws), it's fast, smooth and everything the S3 is not Imo..... And u know how I loved my s3
Not as much rom/kernel options as the S3/S4 but similar issues apply...
HTC, just like samsung, seem to hold back some sources, even after release. So... Devs have to reverse engineer.
But... Good thing is... Like the i9505, This has the qualcomm s600 and not the exynos so better options for the future.
I wouldn't read too much into the whole htc "staff shuffle" issue just yet. It may affect future devices, but not the One.
Fact is, all the best AOSP, CM, aokp devs have this phone and are working on it right now. CM runs good, Roman has an aokp rom, just in case u don't like Sense 5 . so I suppose we'll always have the stock edition on a way.
My honest opinion is... If ur looking for a good phone that looks good, feels good and sound good, and different to TW... but u can still flash decent/different stuff on for 12 months then buy it...
If you need to have this phone for longer then buy a nexus... Cause going on past history, Samsung will have a new phone next summer, and htc could drop this phone completely in 9 months in favour of their next flagship.

Well,
IMHO this is a very good phone. I agree built quality issues are there because it is not priced as the S4 is, but I've had two HTC Ones and none of them were unacceptable. You see a lot of forums/posts about it because the odd one out is always visible. It is a very good phone.... Just the one Android ecosystem wanted. It is a lifestyle thing to upgrade, I guess.
The Camera is awesome no matter what people say.
Fastest capture I've ever seen. Best low light performance. Zero Lag while using the phone. and Looks. well lets talk about something else :victory:
buy a note 2 better all rounder :good:
IMHO don't do it.
Phone scratches alot, battery life is the best. And yea, HTC are gonna die out so it wont get a good resale value after.
Look at the Galaxy Note II or S4.

I have my phone approx 2 months now and have no scratches. I have the silver one. The black edition is prob more prone to scratching as it is painted.
My battery life is pretty similar to my S3 to he honest.

As said... No such issues here. A little care when changing covers for me goes a long way... Ie making sure no dust, grit, dirt, is present b4 removing the official double dip hard case.
No scratches here so far.
And btw I'm a big samsung fan.. Just made a change for the better

As far as build issues go, I only have 1 dead pixel and a small gap but I don't really care as it doesn't effect the phone.

Just got my black One a few weeks ago, I had a stuck pixel that fixed itself. Other than that it is flawless. You'll love it.
My wife got the gs4 so I get a comparison from time to time, I'm happy about my choice the camera is great, it never lags its nice knowing it can handle anything you throw at it. Battery life is miles ahead most phones atm even with the 1080p gorgeous screen.
Oh and that htc tv app is simply amazing, I don't even know where my tv remote is anymore not even joking.

Yeh I'm choosing between GS4 and HTC One. I have an Incredible S right now so I'm looking for an upgrade. Sense 5 looks much closer to stock android than previous. I like the solid feel of HTC phones however GS4 also looks nice and has good specs. Is it really much better than the s3 though?
Tricky desision..any suggestions ?

I won't get another Crapdung device ever again. Plasticy crap with a lousy excuse of a UI. TouchShiz is sluggish crap and extremely ugly and annoying.

My phone is not perfect if you examine it from up real, realy close, there are tiny gaps but if there hadn' t been a thread here in XDA I never would have noticed. The screen is gorgeous, it makes my HOXscreen look dull and yellow in comparison

HTC still never reported a loss but their profits have been going down but it takes more than a few bad quarter for a company to go down. And it' s normal especially for companies traded on a exchange to switch management if the management doesn' t meet its targets. HTC will be here in next year...
