EDIT: Problem solved!
Hi all,
I just tried to install CWM Recovery on a Samsung Galaxy GT-I9000, and it didn't work.
The phone was (originally) running under Android Froyo (2.2), and unrooted. First of all, I used UnlockRoot to root it, and it worked fine. I checked the root access right after using dedicated apps (rootChecker, sdMaid, etc), to confirm.
Then I wanted to install a ClockWorkMod recovery. I followed this guide (on the CyanogenMod wiki). I downloaded and installed Kies to have the USB drivers installed. Then I downloaded Heimdall (my computer is running under Windows 7) + hardcore CMW Kernel. I booted into download mode, then installed the driver. (Step 2 on the tutorial). Then next step was flashing the kernel. It suceeded, and the phone powered off. Turning it on, it just starts to make endless boot loops. The system won't start running, and it is not possible to access to the CWM recovery menu. But the download mode is still available.
So, does anyone have pointers to help me fix this issue ? i would like to have CMW installed, and then install a custom ROM (the latest Jelly Bean based Cyanogenmod release).
Thanks in advance.
Just try again installing stock Rom with odin

Hi Donovan,
Thanks for the swift answer. And yes, it definitely worked. I downloaded this stock rom, and I flashed it successfully with Odin v3 1.85. I am running now under Android 2.3.6, but I lost the root access. Rooting it won't be a problem, hopefully. I still have access to the download mode, and to the stock recovery. I'll try once again to dive into the ClockWorkMod Recovery, and then install a Jelly Bean rom.
I'm hitting the thanks button right after posting this.
Thanks back at ya. Cf root you can find here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Dont forget the wiping before flashing jb.
Most times u have 2 flash custom twice.
If first time hangs just pull battery out, get in recovery & flash second time or third if its needed.
If it says install completed then its done
Much pleasure flashing the i9000
Actually, I spoke to fast, the problem just got much worse.
Okay, just after flashing the stock rom (2.3.6), everything was fine. Then I downloaded the latest stable CM10 (direct link).
I booted into recovery mode (CWM Recovery, actually) and I did try to install (i din't not forget wiping data/cache, dalvik and batt stats), but it failed, saying the package was incorrect. I tried many times, copying again and again the zip file, same problem.
Then I downloaded a previous version, CM9. I tried to installed it, and i run into a very weird error, saying an assertion failed when trying to install the package.
Something like;
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "galaxys" || getprop ("ro.build.product") == "galaxys" ... getprop ("ro.build.device") = GT-I9000 etc...
Click to collapse
And then installation program aborts (error code 7.)
My assumption, is that it looks like my phone is no longer being considered by a samsung gt i9000, according to the installer. Weird, though...
Now, I still have access to the recovery. But the phone can't boot, as everything was wiped. Much worse, I can switch to download mode, but i can't flash back the stock rom, Odin can't detect the phone (I tried with Odin v3 1.82, 1.83 and 1.87).
I'm getting desperate, any pointers ?
Thanks in advance!
Did u try to flash the custom more then 1 time?
Oh yes, I did it like a dozen of times. And I still get the same error.

gti9000 rooting
Hi Donovan, could you help me please:fingers-crossed:
I've purchased a unlocked galaxy s gti9000 and I want to root it. Something I've never done on any phone as I'm a complete noob. I managed to install XWJW1 FIRMWARE. I've now got as follows PDA:I9000XWJW6
PHONE: I9000XWJW1
CSC: I9000XSAJV8.
All the links to the file for rooting seem to be dead. I've found some for rooting XXJVU, But that's not right is it? I would really like to try ICS or Jelly Bean. I must admit I'm nervous about this as it's taken me a while to get a phone as good as this one!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
@Nooga:There is a very complete and straightforward guide here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546). You might want to take a look at it.
Now can we please come back on my topic ? Thanks!

Thanks Roland will give it a try tonight.
Well, that is now solved. I tried something silly that ended up working fine.
As the cm9-smtd update package couldn't run (because of the assertion fail), I just opened the zip package, then edited the file META-INF/com/android/google/updater-script.
I basically removed the assert statement at the top of the file.
CMW recovery installed it properly, without any err. I now have an ICS based rom (Cyanogen Mod 9).
Problem definitely solved now. Going to make a Nandroid backup.
Thanks all, again.

everything went fine in Odin, no error messages, but my phone is stuck on the initial loading screen (that one with the samsung logo) and it's not loading properly.. I tried to wait like 10 minutes, but nothing changed..
How can I restore everything as it was before? Or flash properly a new rom??
Please help, I'm afraid I broke it..
Thank you in advance for any advice

Hello!
Can you get into download or recovery mode?
If you can go to recovery try wipe cache and if it doesnt work try wipe data but remember it deletes all apps!!

Don't worry, it is just a digestion problem (bootloop). CF-root doesn't work with every firmware. If yours wasn't compatible, bootloop is normal reaction. Check my last thread and there you can find step-by-by step guide how to unbrick it.

Great, mate- I'm glad it works again
CF-Root is made AMAIK for Gingerbread ROMs only, and if you have Froyo it is enough to flash SpeedMod root kernel that already features CWM recovery, Busybox and SU. You should always ready very carefully the first posts of the files you flash, so you will void many potential problems.
If you did it after my unbrick guide thread, backup your IMEI No as soon as you root your phone (described how to)
Just click "thanks" button beyond posts which were useful for you, it is our way to express it on this forum (and many us here are visiting the forum to help each other)

You will get the KNOX bootloader if you flash this.
YOU CANNOT UNDO THIS, ITS PERMANENT. FLASHING ANYTHING UNOFFICIAL AFTER FLASHING THIS TAR WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY
Just the NAE FULL stock tar. This post was updated and is now the same file that can be downloaded from SamMobile. Others said that they had reboot issues with the other one.
EDIT: I updated it to the same one that can be downloaded from SamMobile (2/28/14)
md5 of the tar that can be downloaded below(SamMobile): a77570534e22fce0745edb09994c84f2
md5 of the previous Tar that people had issues with: 4c18677fd81fd467ea9356b3da7274fb
Do NOT rename the tar file. Even though it may be convenient to do so, Odin may fail the md5 check for no reason.
(L720VPUFNAE_L720SPTFNAE_L720VPUFNAE_HOME.tar.md5)
This is NOT ROOTED. Its the original TAR file for people who need an Emergency Recovery for their phones, and dont want to wait hours for it to download from slow file hosts.
Mediafire
FileDropper
Over 2630 downloads and counting!
Instructions:
1. Download and Extract tar above and download Odin
2. Put phone into download mode (power off, then power button + Volume Down, then volume up when prompted)
3. Open Odin (right click > open as administrator)
4. Load stock tar into the PDA slot
5. Start flashing
6. Grab some popcorn because it will take a while
7. Profit
Thanks. Going to run this on the wife's phone and report back.

If this is the same .rar file that came from the Mega site it has some bull**** going on with it. It does some weird crap when you load it up. Factory resets itself, and a few other things. Then it reboots randomly. It rebooted my device randomly and I couldn't flash anything for hours. I finally got it working again, but now I have problems flashing other stock ROM's. Where did you get this? From that Mega download site? I noticed that any reference to that download in any thread was deleted. I'll be surprised if this one stays up.
EDIT: Yes, this is the exact same file. I just extracted it and compared them. They both show that they were modified on 2-14-2014 at 22:16:11

the mk2 tar i posted a while ago also did the same thing. A reboot after running it in the first hour. Im guessing Samsung did that on purpose because after that restart, it would work completely fine. I flashed that tar several times, and that random reboot happened once, each time. I dont know where I had gotten this from, it might have been mega link. danzelcool asked me for it, and since I didnt see a thread decided to go ahead and post it. Why couldnt you "flash anything for hours?"
The file is very much like the Android 4.3 tars (both for the S4 and S3), and unlike any of the previous tar before that, so I'm pretty sure thats how Samsung is buiding these files now. I dont know what the random reboot is for, but apparently its for something.

I'm not sure what happened. I may have jacked it up by pulling the battery when it randomly rebooted, but for about 30 times, it wouldn't hold anything that I flashed. It was weird. It would hardly stay on the download menu. It kept turning off, and nothing would flash. I left the battery out overnight and came back the next day and messed with it some more. I was finally able to get it working again. Now it won't flash the Stock Nae rooted ROM zip that I had previously flashed and enjoyed.

Thanks for this. Since taking the NAE ota and then trying to root and install other roms after, I've been experiencing lots of issues and missing features. None of the other stock tar files would get past the bootloader image, so it's great to have one that works again. I had a random reboot during setup on the first boot, and then it did an auto factory reset when it connected to the network. On the third boot, everything was solid. I used CF Autoroot with no problems, and we're all good to go.

Same here I'm having trouble trying to root again. I ran the auto root through odin and I also keep getting the same message. Please help us out. Thanks
Hey guys this thing is legit. The cf auto root you have to use has to come straight from the chainfire repository. You cant use mirrors and ****. Get the official one from his site and make sure it is for the jfspr720 version. That name is not exact but its close.
Once you have that. Use odin and use this tar. Do not auto reboot. Uncheck it. Once the tar finishes. Boot straight back into download mode. Odin the cf root that you got from HIS SITE AND NOT YOUR OWN LAZY ASS ONE YOU ALREADY HAVE DOWNLOADED. If you use a different 1 then official dont.come.here complaining that **** didnt work. Again take off auto reboot when flashing the cf auto root. Once that is done then boot straight into recovery and let auto root work. Phone will boot.
THIS IS OFFICIAL SAMSUNG TAR. NOT SPRINT.
The phone will boot. No sprint flash screen. Just samsung logo. Then phone will do some **** in background causing it to reboot. When it boots up it will go through handsfree and then wipe the phone. The 3rd boot you are good to go. Phone will be functional and fully rooted. I know because I used titanium to restore this app. Hope this helps.

CF Auto Root worked for me.
Not knocking this one because I haven't tried it but I got the usual Sprint CDMA release from SamMobile. Unlike this one, it has the usual xxxx_HOME.tar.md5 name packed into a zip. No place to host it but here's the info if anyone goes for it. Previous tars from them didn't wipe but I haven't used it yet to say it doesn't perform a mid-setup factory wipe like this one.

I was in the process of downgrading my phone from 5.1.1 to 4.4.2.
I started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...to-root-g870aucu1aoa1-4-4-4-2-7-2015-t3025119
I accidentally flashed the second Kernel first and the then my phone wouldn't boot, just boot-looped to to the recovery, I tried to do a factory reset/wiped, but still had same issue, then I factory reset/wiped and then cleared the cache. Same issue. I have tried updating to stock 5.1.1 roms, 4.4.2 roms, stock rooted roms, I have tried to just about everything I can find online. I either get failures ranging from the following:
I'm trying to get my phone working again by flashing the stock firmware with odin3 (tried 3.9 and 3.10) but it fails every time and gives me the error "SW REV CHECK FAIL : [aboot]Fused 2 > Binary 1" while in download mode..

http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/sm-g870a-samsung-s5-active-softbricked-t3161137
I have also tried this: http://www.droidviews.com/fix-status-7-error-while-installing-ota-update-or-roms/
since I was getting a status 7 error, but then I got another error after that (error is sideload package)
I can get to Custom OS download function and I can get to the boot recovery.
I honestly don't care if this phone is rooted or not, stock rom or not, but I need to get it back up and running, please help, Samsungs are new to me.
***UPDATE***
I just wanted to let everyone know that after about 30 different files, some through Odin, some through Recovery I finally got one to install and fix my AOS. The file that finally didn't fail to load in Recovery was Here: www androidfilehost com / ?w=search&s=g870a <--Add in the dots and remove the spaces, and make it a secure website.
It was more specifically G870A_OF3_tJ3_OTA.zip, it did fail something at the end of the recovery but it stayed on the screen for less than a second so I didn't see what failed but my phone is working now.
Hopefully one of those files will help someone else out.

Im in the same boat. Trying the files from OP first. Hopefully one works. I presume we need to move the OP zip file to the sd card on the phone, and update from recovery mode on the phone?
I just got a SM-G870A from a buddy of mine, he says he made the same mistake as the OP. Tried going from PB3 to NE4. He says he tried Odin flashing system images, kernels, and bootloader.
The system recovery says OC5.
Do I need to walk my flashes up OC5-OF2 - OF2-OF3 - OF3-OJ3 to fix this soft brick??
Thank you Chosenbc!!!!!!!!!!!! after several days (more than 5 weeks) I could unbrick my SM-G870A and this was possible all because of you and who uploaded the working Rom. Thank you, thank you thank you! for making this post!

Using an N910t3 I flashed emotion MM rc25 , confirmed wifi didn't work, tried the data fix it put me in a bootloop, luckily I had made a complete backup in TWRP and restored it already, just want to warn anyone else before they try it.
You should keep A backup of the original the "boot" partition in twrp. In TWRP>Backup>select "boot" only. That keeps the stock kernel.
I haven't tested any alternative kernels personally.
I feel that the stock MM kernel is doing great.
MM works fine. I'm waiting for MM kernel
I had a few problems with Marshmallow but finally installed the latest PG2. My phone N910T boot looped and caused some problems but eventually I finally had a working 6.0.1 stock. I installed TWRP and SuperSU SYSTEMLESS and used the phone for 2 days.
I tried flashing Beastmode and Emotion kernels but neither worked and I was stuck in a boot loop. Eventually I tried to reinstall stock without a wipe as this always works and keeps my apps etc.
The stock said the md5 checksum was invalid even though it was the same file from 2 days earlier. To fix this I removed the file extension, preventing it from doing the MD5 check and attempted to install. It bricked my phone as the process appeared to stop at halfway and I aborted. I found modem and bootloader files for PG2 and took a shot at installing them. I got to another bootloop.
I tried the stock tarfile again and was a little more patient this time. The previous delay was only a few minutes long. It installed succesfully. I Installed TWRP with ODIN, followed by a systemless root in recovery mode.
I'm currently waiting for MM kernels. I hope my little adventure helps somebody else on their journey.

You're able to flash TWRP and root on stock PG2 for N910T?

Doesn't it update the bootloader to PG2 from PE3 and it'll still work?

I don't know. I've upgraded bootloader in the past without issues. There seems to be issues surrounding mismatched modems and bootloader recently.
