Hello,
Sorry for this very basic question, I am just wondering what is the difference between a Kernel and a ROM? I see in the development forum there are lots of new Kernels, what are these actually optimizing except underclocking or undervolting (understand that terminology). I am also wondering if the Kernels are specific for the original Nexus One 2.1 Android or can you install for example Modaco or Cyan ROM and then a different random Kernel?

To my understanding, a kernel is what directly interacts with the hardware. Every OS has this, but it's more customizable on our phones since it's based on Linux. The Rom contains the OS itself, and the software and file structure therein. The kernel even can tell the OS how fast the processor goes and how much juice to use from the battery.
Hope that makes sense, as I'm no expert. You can mix and match the two as far as I know. I've mixed them, anyway.

That is really a question better suited to the rom 's development thread, but in general yes you can flash a different kernel. Some kernel/rom combinations work better than others, but you really wont know until you try. Get comfortable with nandroid backups and start trying out different kernel combinations until you find one you like.
Usually most custom roms will include a kernel but they usually have tweaks like coding for 720p, oc, and audio tweaks and what not. Alsways do a nandroid back up and start exploring. When flashing kernels always wipe, I think their are exceptions but its best to wipe just in case. Browse XDA, download a kernel from your phone browser, rom manager install from SD, should be in your downloads folder, backup and wipe, repeat until your phone does what you want.

Neither one is better it just depends on what you want to do.
If you want to totally change over your phone to look and function differently then you need to flash a ROM if you just want to keep the same look but want to enable lets say overclocking then flash an overclocked kernel. If it has to do with the hardware mostly then it's probably something that the kernel can change. Although like mentioned above if you flash a ROM most of the time it will come with a custom kernel.

I know both Dude Random21 and codesplice have gone into this, but to try and give a bit more info...
The kernel is kinda like the nervous system of the body. It directly interacts with the hardware (which is how it is able to adjust CPU speed) and it is what allows the ROM to function.
The ROM is the rest of the body. Every other aspect of the phone. In fact, most ROMs include custom kernels. Various ROMs give you various features/enhancements/bugfixes. You will probably notice the biggest change in your phone if you load a custom ROM. Most people load the custom kernels to help with battery life as a lot of them allow you to lower the phones minimum processing speed from 245Mhz to 128MHz.
The ROM can change so many different aspects of how the phone works. There is CyanogenMod which is based off of stock Android with a lot of tweaks, bugfixes, and new features added. There is also MIUI, which is similar to the iOS style (not the same, but much closer than stock Android), and then there are a ton others out there.

Nandbackup + Rom & Kernel
One question: when I do a backup with CWM, it is the Nandroid backup you talk about, correct...? Same thing? So, if I do a backup with CWM, it's a backup only of the ROM, or also the stock Kernel...? Imagine that I do a Rom (GingerDX for example), and flash with a custom Kernel.... If things go bad and I do a restore from my backup (stock) CWM, what do I restore? Rom, or Rom + (stock) Kernel...?
Yes, a backup that is done in ClockworkMod (or Amon_RA) is considered a nandroid backup. And this takes a complete snapshot of your system. Your ROM, your kernel, your apps and your data are all inlcuded. The only thing that isn't included is the fat partition on your sdcard. So if things go bad and you restore your nandroid backup, it will go back to however it was when you made the backup.

I am currently running Lite'ning ROM 6.1. XXKH3 Kernel version 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.0.5+ [email protected] #20 on SGSII. Phew.
I've tried a lot of ROMS including MIUI, villain, galmetMIUI ICS version . I like Lite'ning ROM because it gave me the least (virtually Nil) problems (FCs/ reboots) and has almost all the features I need (TV-out that's missing from MIUI, good camera with panorama mode, Recording mode in phone). However I miss the CIFS feature. Is it because the kernel does not support it? Can I get CIFS support if I flash another kernel? Any suggesstions on which Kernel should I flash? I realise that this ROM is pretty old now so Can I get additional features with a newer Kernel.

That made everything clear. Thanks man. I'm new to the xda but already flashed a new rom that overclocked my CPU to 1.5 and my HTC Sensation 4G Is running so much better right now. However I wish i knew how to thank people... because i see the thanks meter but cannot find where to thank from.

The rom didn't overclock your phone. The kernel did. READ. You came to the MT4GS forum starting up a storm for people not giving you a direct link to the regular MT4G. How is it you cant find the freakin' "thanks" button? THERE'S A FREAKIN' THANKS BUTTON IN EVERY FREAKIN' POST. OPEN YOUR FREAKIN' EYES.

I had Xperia Neo before this one and theres a very very good ROM for xperias
by the name of SE.Tweaked.
it's absolutly the official ROM that excess app and sys app are removed on it.
is there any thing like that for note that deliver a speed and costumization ability beside that every thing working perfectly on it(pen and ...)

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.
For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.
If you're interested, there's a still experimental (but as far as hardbricking safer) ICS CM9 build that's really cool over here:

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)
Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

1.I have updated the FIRMWARE to ICS now.Now after i have updated it i feel that the battery is draining too fast,Just wanted to know how to fix it.

If you are running stock ICS(which I'm sure you are) you should assume that you are affected by the bug.
Refrain from doing factory reset using the STOCK/CWM recovery as this will trigger the bug even on STOCK recovery. If you have CWM do not do a NANDROID RESTORE.
If you are rooted i suggest flashing a safe custom kernel, a good one that I can
recommend for solid battery life and balanced performance is Speedmod k3-3 just look for it on the development section.
If you don't like custom kernels and prefer stock just do not do the ones I've mentioned above. If you really need to do a factory reset do it on Gingerbread.
Regarding the battery life, there are many factors to consider. First thing that you need to check if your phone is going into deep sleep. Download cpuspy on play store and report back here so we can help you.

You cant use Kies but Id recommend using ODIN because its faster and safer.

His English isnt great, but essentially
Download ODIN
Download whichever stock rom you want (GB)
Set phone to download mode
Connect to Odin
and flash.
His instructions are a lot more detailed (maybe to much so). But if you do this, the dangerous kernel will be gone and youll be safe.
I know where you are coming from being fairly new to the android scene. Have been in it now for about six months and i would consider myself fairly literate. From what you were saying you updated your phone to the official ics version for your phone. Well... The first thing you need to do my friend is read, read, and read some more. Alot of what i know and have learned has been from researching these forums and the web. Rootgalaxynote.com is pretty good for noobs as it usually has videos showing you how to do things step by step but you should also read some of the faq's about rooting and flashing on this site. If i were in your shoes the first thing that i would do would be the following;
1.) root the device using Dr. Keetans method on this site. If you havent done this it wouuld be a good place to egt started. His method will not trigger your phones counter.
2.) I would revert the phone back to its earlier version which would be gingerbread. You can do this by looking in the stock gingerbread roms section under android development on this site. Our fellow senior members have made it fairly easy to find and after reading you should have a pretty good idea of what to do.
3.) Install a kernel that is safe for ics roms such as franco kernel or abyssnote kernel. This should be fairly easy for you to do just make sure you do tue steps exactly as they describe or else you will mess the phone up.
4.) After that you can pick out a custom ics rom which if you are looking for optimal battery consumption this would be the best way to go about it as official ics rom consumes a substantial amount more battery than the sleak, lean more refined custom roms out there. Just be carefull what you choose as some are full of bugs and features not working.
The main thing here is to cover alot of ground and do your homework. Research is key and you always want to stick with sites like xda and a few others. Xda may not be the most user friendly site out there but it contains a wealth of information and iw where the best of the best come together. Hope this helps my friend.

If you can still run it fine, then you're good. But from now on refrain from doing things on the recovery until you're on a safe kernel. Some users reported that they were able to do a factory reset to the nth time before encountering the brick. Meaning you can factory reset 999 times and get away with it and on the 1000th time, brick ur device seriously god knows when it will happen.
Just stay away from CWM or Stock recovery for now if you don't know what you're doing just to be safe.
P.S. ICS is nothing to be scared of if you know what you're doing. Do a little research about the hardbrick bug good place

Well i completely agree with you mate and i need to do a lot of homework before i make any change.However since i am very new to the terminology used in ANDROID so would like to ask you if there is any website which can explain me a lil bit about these terminologies so that i know what everbody is talking about or is it that i should simply go through the forums and then join all the bits and pieces to get an idea about the terms used.
Also i would like to ask you that "ODIN" is it like another software which is used to flash the FIRMWARE

Just by snooping, hanging around, munch and digest all you can and soon you'll be able to pick some neat tricks in learning android terminologies in no time at all.
ODIN (PC /Mobile) is a very neat indispensable tool for custom room makers and flashers... With this tool you can always at your disposal.. whilst jump from one custom rom to another, which ever your choice or liking. Changing ROMS is akin to Flashing.. so if you flash a ROM, you are changing your current ROM to whatever ROM you would like to have it installed on your phone.
Every custom ROM has its highlights and lowlights... pick what suits you best and your good to go after. Flashing ROMs with Gingerbread support (if your still in stock GB), assures you no brick at all... Now on the other hand, if your already in ICS(Stock) and would like to flash custom roms with iCS support.. then I do warn you to be wary of it. A lot of people have fallen and have been bitten by the hardbrick bug... Just always be extra careful in doing it.

Yes! Flash it back to Stock Rom and unroot it. You should be good to go.
You should not worry too much about the bricking bug. If you stay on stock rom and your phone gets bricked you are covered by the warranty. It is not your fault that the phone has that problem.
I also recommend that you ask some friend that has experience to help if you want to flash/root/install custom rom, given that you have little experience with android.

U remind me of myself 2 years back when I was equally inquisitive, enthusiastic but lacking knowledge...
First of all... There is no problem whatsoever if you remain on stock(yes u r right official) Samsung ics provided you don't do factory reset ahead.
2. U need to familiarize yourself with android terminology such as rooting, flashing custom (yes again u r right tweaked) roms, recovery mode, download mode, full wipe, Odin, directly/not directly root able roms etc etc... I am not trying to psyche you out but just giving a word of caution. Unless you know all of these terminologies well (you will get lot of reading on xda on each of this) , PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT ANYTHING. By anything I mean even reverting to GB. U must have updated from GB to iCS OTA (over the air) that is on device itself but this rversal won't be easy unless u fully know what u r doing... so first familiarize urself and then get into it.
3. As regards battery life on stock ics , you can use app named juice defender (available on play store) it has lot of options for battery saving. Besides check if GPS and wifi options are not switched on when not in use... some apps are battery hoggers. Check battery usage under settings ---- battery to see how its doing.
4. There are few safe ics kernels available like what has been told u before by some people in this thread... I would strongly suggest Cm9 or any cm9 based rom like asylum (btw Cm stands for cyanogenmod ) which are smooth and safe & yes extremely battery efficient too.
5. Lastly, I will pm you one apk file which will help you know whether your phone has a brick bug or not... do uninstall that application after you check it. For installing any external app (apk file) you need to go in settings ---- security --- and tick unknown sources

Nopes... rooting is gaining administrator rights over your phone. In simple terms , being able to access system folder on your phone... Beware, rooting voids warranty.. Please refer Dr. ketan's guide on rooting note on other thread... That's best

And i have already checked the article which helps you to check if your handset is affected or not and what i could understand was that we just have to install the application and then run the application and will generate a result
But what after that?

It will throw up the result after checking.. u need not look for anything... it will tell u if ur phone is prone to brick bug.. check it urself. Have sent u the apk file already through pm (personal message).
This will just tell you if you are really prone to this bug, nothing beyond that. If you are then you have three options:
1. Stick to stock ics rom but don't do full wipe again
2. Revert to stock GB through Odin
3. Switch to safe ics kernel (and enjoy lovely ics experience without boring Samsung touchwiz)
For the last you will have to root your phone for remaining, rooting not required.

What ROM are you on exactly??I've heard this brick issue is solved in the ROMS released last month.With CF-root 5.6 it's even safe to wipe.But no one dares to try apparently so it needs confirmation.
I am on 4.0.3

I've just bought the note, its pretty good but theres a lot of junk on there I dont want and basically Im looking at having a play with a couple of roms. Before I do, can anybody give me some advice.
1. Im guessing I'll need to root my phone and put Clockwork recovery on there? As of today, whats the safest and best option and is there a really easy guide for it? I dont want it to do anything other than work so Im not bothered for features and overclocking, just more or less stock working.
2. In line with that, whats the most stable JB rom? Again Im after something thats more or less stock, as you'd see on the Galaxy Nexus that basically works and has all the stock features like Google now (Or can be installed). Again, Im not too bothered for tablet modes or anything like that, just stable and working.
Now a couple of questions based on me doing the above.
3. Will I still be able to play games, for example I bought the Dark Knight game, are the roms capable of running them?
4. Will a custom rom mess with video playback or any security features like online banking or the play store?

Easiest way to root would be to flash HydraCore kernel in ODIN, You'd most probably be using this kernel all your life anyway as its the most popular one out there !
Secondly, For a stable JB ROM, Try Jelly Core Its made by the same dev as the awesome kernel above
Thirdly all your games will work just as well as they would on stock

There are loads of information available in the above thread to get started with installing roms. There are pre-rooted rom available in that thread which when used in ODIN roots your phone with the standard rom.
There are also CMD prompt based tools available that simply roots the room by pushing the zimage. Search a bit and you can locate that thread as well.

1) I've read about the emmc bug and used the app (cant remember which one but its off these forums) and it says Im at risk of the emmc issue, does that mean I cant 100% use the hydracore kernel or does it mean im at greater risk if I use it.. Or if the emmc issue totally redundant now with the latest kernels?
2) I keep reading a lot about memory leaks and video performance, does this mean Im likely to end up having to reboot my phone a lot and additionally will I have issues playing various video files? The one thing the stock ICS has going is the Samsung video app plays everything Ive thrown at it so far

1. The emmc issue is only present on stock ics kernels. All custom kernels have the cap erase command disabled.
2. Memory leaks are still present so yes, you'll have to reboot every couple of days. Can't comment on video playback issues. I use mobo player which plays everything I've thrown at it without performance issues.

I'm a newbie and about to flash my Note.
Though by now having a quite solid idea of the process,
I'm still stuck on this difference.
Is the kernel different to a CWM (like Philz)? Does the
kernel include the CWM (or viceversa)? CWM is the same
of modified recovery?
Is a kernel flashable afterwards , when a custom ROM
is flashed and working, but non satisfying in regards of its
performance (just an example)?
Also: what is a safe kernel compared to a kernel? A custom kernel?
Or.. safe kernel equals modified recovery? I'm really confused..

i understand your confusion, dont worry its very simple. I will explain it.
kernel and recovery are different things. kernel makes your device hardware run the software you put on it and recovery well as the name goes its recovery which lets you do stuff like installing zips, taking backups, doing wipes etc.
i hope you have understood the difference.
Now in N7000 i.e " Note I " the kernel and recovery are in the same partition thus every kernel has its own recovery bundled with it. So if you flash a kernel then the recovery that comes with it gets flashed along it.
to make it more clear take the example of galaxy s3. In GS3 you have to flash the kernel and the recovery seperately because each has a different partition. So there you can choose to have an X recovery for a Y kernel.
I am not sure if you can do so with the N7000 and as far as i remember the last time i tried it, it didnt work and the recovery remained the same even though i tried to flash a different recovery over it. I could be wrong though since i havent actually tried such in a long time.
About CWM, it is a modified recovery which gives your device the ability to flash custom roms which you cannot do so in the recovery that comes with the device. So if you want to flash custom roms then you root your device and install a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP and flash the zip from it.
Every ROM comes with its own default kernel which gets flashed along with the ROM and thus we do not have to flash kernels seperately for each ROM that we flash but yes you can flash a different kernel for a ROM if you are not satisfied with the performance but make sure its compatible with the rom and supports it by which i mean dont flash a touchwiz kernel on a AOSP ROM etc. Make sure you read the description and instructions in the kernel thread and take a backup in the recovery before flashing anything onto the ROM. Be sure you understand what you are doing or else you risk messing the device
As far as i remember all the kernels are safe for JB and KK, it was ICS that had the unsafe/brick kernel issue but that was solved a long time back so i dont think you need to worry about safe or unsafe kernels anymore unless you are flashing an ICS ROM which i highly doubt you will.
A pro tip would be to make sure you read the instructions and a bit of thread pages to understand whats going on and what you need to do with whatever you are planning to flash

no difference, they are modified versions of stock android with different names and each has a community where they keep introducing features and support ROMs. if you look at the features list nowadays there is not really much difference between the two, the only difference I see is CM developed it's own kernel and recovery which can also be used on aosp/aokp based ROMs obviously
