Art works great - Galaxy Note 4 General

On my brand new galaxy 4 (snapdragon), without root, I activated the development mode and then the art mode. It took about 30 minutes to recompile the 410 installed applications, and finally it came back to life. I had a single problem with S Health, that I had to disable and reinstall again. I tested all applications, and everything now seemsto work reliably. Indeed, the gui seems much smoother and more buttery than before. I will check battery lifetime and performances in the next few days...

Art mode doesn't require root or smth?

Anyone on tmo get their WiFi calling to work after switching to ART? There was a marked difference when fast scrolling twitter feeds. Much smoother. No WiFi calling doesn't work for me though. Optimizing at every startup stinks too.

On same case, I've turned to ART but s healt crashed. After this i uninstalled the updates and disable app, reboot, and enabled it again but no luck. How did you make s health app working on ART?

Did you clean the cache too?

Twice answer, deleted this one.

Oh no..
now I turned into the ART. S Health crashed. I cleared the app's cache and data. Uninstalled updates and disable the app. Reboot, but it still crashes. What was your steps? Thank you.

For your information, the s health version I am using is the factory installed one, not the available update - version 3.5.0.0123. Also, I am running N910FXXU1AJN4 from October 8th. After one day of use, I can confirm I don't have a single noticeable issue under ART.
P.s. I am not a newcomer, I checked that art is actually running and smoothness is sincerely impressive...

Mee too - i've switched to ART, and disabled all animations - everything is almost instant.
if s-health crashes, then so be it. I don't want Samsung to track my pulse and oxygen level via internet.

I have to comment that my device doesn't optimize the apps in every reboot.

Update: to test the robustness of S health, I let the application to update to 3.5.1.0668 (current version)...and the app stopped working! However I noticed another annoying bug that appears only...once you reboot. In particular, every reboot I get a message from android trying to upgrade 117 application (I have about 400). if I reboot multiple times, the message is still there and the process of optimization too!!!! This is particularly annoying since every time it takes about 15 minutes and it eats about 15% of battery!!!

Mine is also updates 3 apps. Small amount of them but so annoying.
SM-N910C cihazımdan gönderildi

Yes, the optimizing reboots had me switch back. Not that I reboot much but it was annoying it kept doing it. Although it gives the processor a workout.....

Definitely smoother for me and battery life seems to have improved as well. Will have to observe few more days though
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk

I can confirm that S health works only if I run version 3.5.0.00123. It's the one installed as default in my rom, so I can simply install it by uninstalling the most recent version and turn it on from the disabled apps. ART feels definitely faster and smoother than dalvik...

Also running art since yesterday and no issues at all. Haven't found an app that I use that doesn't work.

How abt RAM usage? Thanks.

Droid 4 JellyBean...The Good, Bad, and the Ugly

So, now we have it. But we need to look at the new "issues" we're all facing. Because we're going to need some help.
The Good
We lost a lot of Blurr (thank ya Jesus!) We have a faster, better camera. A more optimized kernal for what seems like an OS with lighter thumbprint. Its fast! We can disable dozens of needlessly running apps/services. New gallery is beautiful.
The Bad
We lost the "Exit" button in the browser. Google+ is in everything with options defaulting to send anonymous usage and target ads based on our data. Auto sign-in/up is everywhere. Nova Launcher keeps getting killed by Android Battery life seems way off. Factory reset is pretty much a requirement. Clock app is super weird. Verizon bloat seems like an extra appendage that won't be amputated. Smart Actions is still broken.
The Ugly
The font is terrible. No amazing wallpapers added.
We have ALMOST a Nexus experience. What are you guys seeing with update, and what problems have you fixed? I'm super concerned that I can't "Exit" the browser. I don't like things running in memory.
I love the new update. I got it from the soak test early this week. I did not wipe first. My nova launcher has never been killed and phone is running perfectly for me since Tuesday. Love it!!!

I'm loving it. It's so fast and less bloatware. Browser can't "Exit" just like all JB roms on all devices. We also lost sleep mode on power menu. Good to see we still have mass storage usb mode. It's been removed in all Moto new lineups. This is the best ota update I've ever applied on my Android devices.

Just last evening I checked the System Updates on my unrooted Droid 4 and there it was! Upgraded it.
Project Butter lives upto the mark. Works smooth like butter.
Font, could've done better.
The ONLY UGLY issue am facing:
My data from the network is somehow locked, or in short, not working. Visited Vodafone gallery & they checked the settings, which were fine, but still the data is not working by the network.
NEED HELP!
Please, suggest me how I can make the data work on my Droid 4!
Please!
Currently my phone is technically paralyzed because of this issue!
Nova works fine with me too.

I have several friends and relatives with Droid 4's and RAZR's. These Jelly Bean updates have been hit or miss with results.
-One Droid 4 was a brand new phone with date code 03/13 and HW B. This phone received the update quickly and smoothly. Operation has been perfect.
-Another Droid 4 had date code 16/12 and HW A, never rooted or modded, update failed 3 times, left the phone soft bricked, had to be SBF'd back to ICS. The new update will just not play nice with this phone, so it will need to be replaced.
-A RAZR MAXX got this update smoothly and battery life has been great, no lags or hiccups.
-A regular RAZR got this update and battery life is horrible, the phone gets hot, wiping cache and data did not fix it. No prior issues with ICS.
I'm guessing that Motorola may have used different components in different batches and some just will not run properly.
the shift button on the physical keyboard likes to stop toggling occasionaly. rebooting the phone fixes it for a while.
when it stops toggling, you have to push [shift] and [1] to make a "!", instead of [shift] and then [1].

yes i noticed this too. it's a little annoying but i think there should be an update to the update coming out soon. right now id like to figure out how i can reflash with jb possibly using rsdlite as i did with ics but someone said flashing to ics now would brick my d4. im getting random reboots like once a day, but i think it may have something to do with my attempt at installing lbe which sent the phone into bootloop. so i want to clear it all and start from the top.. but how?

Matter of fact, I had the phone root'ed, stock tether enabled on ICS. Unrooted the phone to get the update to install and once upgraded to JB, my tether was still working, so the upgrade did not reset the value in the SQL database.
Works brill anyhow.

Weird - I'm pretty certain it had reset for me during the upgrade.
My D4 had the stock rom + the Google Now hacked into it, plus the latest version of Hashcode's CM10, which I'd been using steadily since the Bluetooth bugs were fixed. (Around two weeks ago.) On the stock ROM, I'd always had issues of the phone occasionally (often) going crazy with background processes or something where it would heat up quite a bit and the battery would drain quickly. I also had intermittent Bluetooth issues with my car connection, where it often wouldn't connect, requiring a reboot or toggling BT, and it would sometimes lose the connection after a call.
Running CM, it stayed cool and had much longer battery life, and BT worked much more reliably.
Removing the Google Now hack to install the JB update wasn't going smoothly, so I ended up just using RSDLite and wiping the phone completely then installing the JB update manually (it wasn't showing yet as an OTA.) It's definitely faster, BUT...
The Shift key often doesn't work correctly, as has been mentioned here
Bluetooth is wonky again and I have to tell it over and over to pair with my car
Mobile data just stopped working yesterday, even after rebooting, until I manually turned off and on mobile data
Battery life is atrocious; it has been getting hot a lot and I'm probably getting not much more than half the battery life that I got in CM. Looking in the Battery info, Screen is usually the biggest battery user, but I always have it either set to Auto or to a very dim display. Looking at CPU usage shows nothing obvious. It's common for the battery to get to 95-100' F or higher. Right now it's behaving and only at 72' F - it must know that I'm complaining about it.
I'm hoping that we'll soon see (if we haven't already; I haven't checked yet) a CM based on the new kernel, so we get everything working but with the better battery life and such. Video was the only issue that I was still seeing with it.

I wonder why they axed sleep mode, I used that a lot. Does CM or AOKP still have it?
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk
I've noticed that I'm seeing 3G/H notification in the notification bar while connected on WiFi. It didn't do this in ICS. I wonder whether that's just a cosmetic change or whether it has an impact on battery life. I've not noticed the shift problem, but the Caps Lock light doesn't seem to work any more.
Cheers,
Steve

KitKat Quick Glance

As we all note kitkat has been out for 2 days
My quick impression is that it isn't good
LAAAAAG in launcher (Not Lockscreen nor apps) (GPU Rendering isn'T very effective)
Battery is being killed
Camera seems to worse in low light condition (Will post an comparason later) and slower
No update for the stock apps (Xperia blog has those)
Post your Impressions below How do you feel
Update:In NUT's recovery don't enter TeamWinRecovery for me it caused an refuse boot
had to connect in download mode (Without flashing anything)
Opening PhilzTouch recovery and booted from there to system
I find it quite responsive after the initial lag in the settings menu and bad battery life.
What's really annoying me though is that I can't find a tweak which enables expanded desktop properly. Despite KitKat apparently natively supporting expanded desktop mode, Gravity Box for some reason doesn't want to work properly. It worked perfectly in 4.2.2. So I'm hoping someone can make a working version.
Another test
if you use the voice message of FB Messenger your mic gets locked
and you will have to restart your Phone to make it work
i've had kit kat for two days now on my xperia zr no root, locked bootloader. I have no lags, everything works quick just like 4,3. The only issue is that google play services drains battery like crazy (at this very moment is on 87% on battery use ) :/
There is an xposed mod
Called Force imersive mode try it

What Rom? I am thinking of switching ?
Carbon or BeanStack ?
kitkat
I don't see/feel any problems on my C5503
running smooth
Any Major difference in terms of functionality between 4.4 and 4.3 except the Theme Color? If not I'll stick with 4.3 itself:victory:.
Also Please provide the Walkman, Gallery and Movies APP Version in 4.4
I'm kinda surprised with all ur reviews here coz I don't have any lag issues whatsoever.
I'm using a prerooted version of .230 on my C5502.
The phone is responsive, I got a decent antutu score of around 21225 and the battery barely drains.. I had a perfectly flat battery graph for abt 4 n a half hours (of course I wasn't using the phone but that also means it's going into the appropriate power mode effectively). And even when I was using it, I got a decent full day of use out of it.

Carbon is good but Mokee is officially supported and offers much better functions IMO eg. split screen screen recording and awesome handy shortcuts from the recents menu... i am using stock 4.4.2 sony for now but i am already missing Mokee..
in any case if you want to move back to cm/asop/akop i would recommend Mokee but don't get me wrong i still love Carbon Rom.

I noticed lag and heating issues at first install but if you leave it for a while it seems like it fixes itself.. I would say it uses about 20% more battery than maybe a cm rom..
At first I thought that being with my own home made rooted version was the cause of the lag. In the z forum I read about wiping data and factory reset and also reboot a couple of times. I have to say that the lag is gone. I like the Kitkat version so far. I even made it deodexed and put z2 app in the app folder even that works. So if you can find the new updated apps it is possible to get them working.

and then a system restore Everything is fine now (Even without touching GPU rendering)
early morning rant
How do I feel?
Honestly, as free beta tester for Google that's how.
I'm not even considering updating to stock KK, yet. Would rather move to some fine working custom ROM like Carbon (need to check first if VPN is working) or CM.
- It used to be, flash stock, one-touch root and voila.
- Now, it's TA backup, BL unlock/relock, flash, recovery, flash, flash, tweak this, mod that, xposed, gpu render, battery drain, oh lag, oh camera is slower, oh more emoticons, OH COME ON!!
I know it's not Sony fault but those hipsters from Google.
With killing external SD support, at the end and in the future, it smells that stock Android will work flawlessly ONLY on Google hardware. That's a pure BS.
You mean Mobiles with no SD card*
Yeah, basically all Nexuses, mob/tab. Good read here
I think it helps to keep product life cycle short. The Apple philosophy.
Okay, after a few days use I'm getting major lag when unlocking the phone. When I input my pattern, the phone responds with the vibrations like 3 seconds later, and THEN it unlocks. After that it's completely fine, and feels a lot snappier than 4.2.2. Does anyone else have the same problem?

ART runtime

Has anyone tried switching to ART yet? Have you noticed any problems or benefits such as increased fluidity or battery life?
I switched. No problems except every time I reboot it always optimizes 44 apps. I don't know what that's about.

Yea, did that on Nexus 5 Android L Preview as well. Probably a small bug that needs working with.
That's the main problem you'll encounter. And other small things like some apps not working correctly (like Pandora).
I switched to ART, and my Pandora is working.
It sure takes a long time to reboot as it optimizes 66 apps. Switching back to dalvik.
I've noticed an extreme lag on my note 4 when I switch to ART. Not only does it optimize apps whenever I reboot, I've noticed the length of time to do things such as freeze apps in Titanium backup takes longer. Apps such as S-health/Spotify/facebook also take a long time to load versus Devik.
It might be my anecdotal experiences, but I've noticed the same thing with my G3.
I've switched back to DEVIK until another ROM comes along.
after going back and forth with art/dalvik, on a couple of different phones, I think its a combination of certain apps on our phones not being compatible, and the fact this is a modified form of ART, made to work with version of android below 5.0
even though I dont have this phone yet, I think its probably fast enough with dalvik, to not bother with ART until Android L comes out..
WTF, the whole idea of ART was to compile applications during install and be done with it, as opposed to Just In Time, when you compile right before application start, each and every time, so you guys should have delay using Dalvik, during reboot all apps are started and should be recompiled, not with ART which should be precompiled already, what am I missing here? You're describing just the opposite of what it should be.

Yes, and yet, that is what is happening. ? Crazy
Art sucks on the note 4. As everyone said it takes forever to boot up as it tries to optimize several app at ever reboot. In my case 29 apps and it'd slow like molasses. Once booted, some apps also take forever to load like Facebook. Art is more a disadvantage in the note 4s case. Went back to dalvik.

day 1 went with dalvik. no issues while setting up the phone how i like it and using it. switched to art yesterday afternoon and switched back to dalvik lat last night because i had major hangups in apps(timely alarm took 5 seconds to open, freezing with dolphin browser and words with friends. that i can remember) hangups were so bad it even locked up the phone a few times where capacitive buttons would not work for multiple seconds. dalvik is doing just fine, not enough benefit for me to go back
It's pretty much a waste of time to use ART at this point in time until L is released. If there are any benefits right now, it's either very very minimal or placebo. Wait until it is official with L.
I switch to ART now and i never encountered your problems... after that it reboots then optimized 349 apps on my device then it boots. after that it became laggy i tried playing need for speed for the first time it freezes i close the app and waited for a period of time and try again after that theres no lag at all even the TW launcher. i have no problem with my apps i swear. ill try to make a video tomorrow.

Is it just me or does it take an EXTREMELY long time to boot the first time after you switch to ART? Ive been stuck on "Optimizing app 246 of 386" for like 10+ mins now.

Big mistake. It will do that on every reboot and your phone will get really hot. Nothing you can do now but to wait it out. Go back to dalvik asap.

You have to just let it finish. It takes a long time but should not have any bad side effects. ART loads a bigger portion of the applications you have installed on your phone into the cache. That is why it runs faster, because it is holding more of the applications in a preloaded state. This is also why the boot takes so long. You should also see a bit higher RAM usage when the phone is idle.
But this allows the phone to have more stable operation and improves efficiency which is why you generally see a better battery life and less cpu waste.

My phone basically got stuck booting i had to completely wipe in recovery to get it back up. Maybe I just had too many apps installed? Like my phone literally was booting for half a day...LITERALLY.
when I switched to ART, S Health stopped working. Had to switch back.
Absolutely no issues running ART for me. I checked everything I can think of and all appears to be good.
Pardon my ignorance, but if I already run FireKat V5 on my N4, what benefits or is it even possible to switch over to ART runtime?
I'm using ART on my S3 and Nexus 7 for about some months now. All in one it's a very good user experience to me using it together with CM nightlys.
Now I've tried enabling it on my new and rooted Note 4 at the usual way. Well. I get the question to switch and reboot, but the boot time is at usual and the runtime is always Dalvik. So if I try to switch back to Dalvik there is no prompt for reboot because I'm still on Dalvik instead on ART. Whyever.. no ART runtime for me on my Note 4 running KK 4.4.4.
Well, except all the (as system app installed!) bloatware, I'm still feeling happy with my new device.. even without ART.
Btw: Anyone knows a good list of those installed system apps I can securely remove without using special apps like SmartDebloater?
Thanks in advance and regards.

Thoughts on ART runtime on Note 4?

Anyone have been using ART on Note 4 can share what is your experience?
Personally I don't find any noticeable improvements. However, the extra time it takes to complete app updates and installations is pretty noticeable. Not that much of an issue on that, but there is one little annoyance for me - whenever I reboot my phone the same set of apps needs to be optimized and the reboot process takes over a minute for that.
I hope this is just because it is still kind of a "test" feature on 4.4 though.

Doesn't work. No improvement whatsoever. Don't bother at all. Lollipop will use it properly
Echo the above posts. Annoying that it kept optimising apps on reboot, takes up extra storage space and actually seemed to appear to stutter more.

ART on droid turbo

Hey all.
I tried switching the runtime to ART and lost all use of the power button. So I'm back to Dalvik again. Is anyone else having this problem and if so, have you found a way to fix it
Thanks!
I've been on ART since Monday and have had no issues
Until you do a reboot, then it recompiles the run time all over again. I've also been being some random FC's on phone and ui but other than that it's fine
I switched over to ART and it is optimizing 60 apps after every reboot ? going back to Dalvik for now also battery life for me has been somewhat shorter..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
I was getting rather crappy battery life after restoring apps via helium phone was awake 100% of the time, I switched to ART and now the phone sleeps. As a result battery life has improved!
I've been running with ART since I got it on release day and haven't had a single app fail. Maybe I don't have a lot of apps or something, but so far, it's running great.
Anyone been running ART?
I enjoyed performance on my HTC M7, but the battery life seemed shorter. Could have been other factors, but am curious as to what people are doing on Turbo.
I don't have any performance lag, so I don't imagine this things running any better than it is. Especially at the sacrifice of battery life.
I've roamed google and can't find an answer. I tried to switch to ART...3 HOURS ago! It keeps getting stuck! I read some forums and rebooted, it'd say "upgrading x out of y apps" but the Y is always different (up and down) and the X it gets stuck on is always different! at first I assumed because I have a podcast app that has over 1.7 GB of data, but going on 4 hours?
Worse, the recovery partition isn't showing up to wipe dalvik cache or data- it just says NO COMMAND, and does not respond with any menus. Tried the factory reset, and tried even using adb to wipe. Nothing is anything other than stock here. nothing is responding. It just keeps going back to the "Android is upgrading" Any ideas?

I've noticed ART doesn't seem to play very well on mine either. Upgrading apps everytime you reboot. Boot sounds play when on vibrate/silent. There's quite a few quirks but those stood out the most to me. When lollipop is official, we won't have to worry about that nonsense. For me, I'll have this phone about 10 more days before I send it back to Verizon.
Issues with ART aswell... Several apps optimize after every reboot.

After waiting about 6 hours, and even trying to wipe cache and everything, eventually I had to wipe data and do a factory reset, and got ridiculed on the private forum for the soak on even tryingART (oddly). So for the moment, I'd say we wait on LP b4 using it consistently.
I ran ART for about a week or two. The optimizations grew on every reboot. Switched back to Dalvik and my battery life improved.
Stop rebooting then . Art runs great. Better battery and snappier with window animation s turned off. If u have problems its either your phone or operator error

Naive comment. If there is a phone problem, you likely will need to reboot. Operator error doesnt cause a phone to reboot either.
Why use something buggy and broken like art on kitkat when the advantages are barely seen and the disadvantages are huge?

Why buggy and broken? Besides the optimization on boot, for which we don't know whether it's a bug or has its reasons, art runs great on the turbo.
I can't say much about GUI performance, the GUI is blindingly fast on dalvik, hard to say whether it's blindinglier faster on art or not, but it's definitely not slower.
Battery life on the other hand makes a huge jump with art! Especially system uses way less power, in my case less than a third. And that's definitely worth it!
There might be issues with some applications from the play store (which is most likely a compatibility topic as with any major android update and not one of bugs) , so far I didn't run into any, though, and I've got plenty of apps installed and in use - none of them exhibit the slightest issue at all.
All this said, if you don't run into any trouble with any of your key applications, I definitely and highly recommend art!

I tested ART for two weeks ( got the phone on launch day) my battery life was significantly worse.

Interesting. Did you figure out where the power went to? Did you compare fairly, as you had the phone new, usage pattern and installed apps might have undergone a fair change.
As a side note, I only tried it with the latest update, maybe that makes a difference as well...

I switched to ART maybe a week after I got the phone, so I was through the new phone setup. I was on that day 1 update (.15 or whatever) when I was trying it. I wasn't scientific about the testing at all, but I did use it for two weeks so I think it was a pretty comprehensive representation of my usage patterns. After switching back to dalvik, my standby time in particular jumped noticeably. Different strokes for different folks? I don't know, but personally I will be sticking to dalvik while on Kit Kat.

Apparently, pity. Looks like it ain't a sure win, thus. Guess, as you said, one has to try it out and see whether it works out for your particular combo of apps and usage...
Thanks for shedding light on that dark side of art.
I'm on the maxx, didn't get much out of art for better or worse. I didn't notice any performance difference nor change in battery. I did find the rebuilding annoying though since I reboot at least once a day after I update my hosts file and I'm trying various other changes in exposed and so on that require a reboot.
