[Q] Moto X stuck in bootloader screen after ota update - Moto X Q&A

Hey guys!
After updating my rooted phone through OTA, it stucked in bootloader screen and every fastboot command I execute results in: FAILED (remote failure)
I tried everything I found and nothing solves the problem.
Please, someone help me!
C:\Fastboot+ADB>fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
sending 'partition' (32 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.281s]
writing 'partition'...
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 1.172s
Phone status:
Device is LOCKED (It was unlocked early)
Screen message:
downgrade security version
update gpt_main version failed
preflash validation failed for GPT

Did you downgrade your android system any time after 4.2.2?

It sounds like you've downgraded and now took an ota. It's written all over this section of xda that doing that on a Moto X is a guaranteed brick.
If this is the case, you'll want to look for the Resurrect your moto X thread in the general section.
Good luck!

What Model X, what version does your bootloader say (2nd line of the FastbootAP/Bootloader screen), and what ROM are you trying to flash?
As suggested, please also be sure you are using Moto's fastboot, rather than stock fastboot from the Android SDK.

How did your bootloader get relocked? The OTA didn't do it so I'm guessing you relocked it for some reason.

Hi, thank you all for your attention, but I solved the problem... I found a Verison Rom with the files I needed \o/.
I'm at work right now, but in home I'll post the solution to help who needs to.
Sorry, my english is awful.
Again, thank you!

I've seen that happen a few times when some have tried to downgrade.

My phone bricked when I tried to do an OTA update, after downgraded to 4.2.2. When the phone rebooted to compete the upgrade, it stuck on bootloader screen.
I downloaded this Verizon rom in link: h t t p : // sbf.droid - developers . org / download . php ? device = 0&file =9 40 (remove spaces)
and flashed its bootloader. After that, the phone was receiving commands. I restarted and it booted normally.
To solve the problem download this rom and execute: fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
I hope it help someone!

I would suggest something slightly different.
I would say.. check the bootloader on your phone, and download the corresponding ROM for your model phone.
Bootloader version = rom version
30.70 = original 4.2.2
30.71 = 4.2.2 OTA with camera update
30.B2 = 4.4
30.B4 = 4.4.2
30.B7 = 4.4.4
Just some model examples...
XT1060 = Verizon Wireless USA
XT1058 = ATT in the USA, Rogers Canada
XT1056 = Sprint in the USA
XT1053 = GSM Dev Edition, as well as the "Unlocked ships with xxx Sim" from Moto's web site (like T-Mobile, Net10, and others).
XT1052 = European, and some Asia.
So if your bootloader is 30.B4 and you have a GSM Unlocked (with T-Mobile SIM), then download and flash the 4.4.2 XT1053 rom. If the bootloader is 30.B7, and you have a Sprint X, download/flash the 4.4.4 Sprint XT1056 rom
And I would flash the entire SBF, not just parts because when GPT.Bin and Motoboot.img are mismatched from the rom on the phone, you can/will brick taking an OTA.
You can get the roms from -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-tip-web-sites-official-leaked-roms-t2923347
In other words, suggesting to flash the Verizon 4.4.4 rom like you are, might not work if you have a LOCKED bootloader and don't have a Verizon XT1060. Flashing the Verizon XT1060 GPT.BIN onto a European XT1052 with unlocked bootloader could cause other issues too.
Finally, flashing the GPT.BIN from a 4.4.4 ROM onto a phone that has the bootloader from 4.4.2 for example, will also cause issues.

this was misleading my unbricking development (even has set me at a good path at first) xD i saw this at a chinese site, which i did not understand at all, but the following " 4.4.4 = 30.B6" so i could guess the next version has to be lollipop and i had to get GPT.bin from there so the partitions in my phone could restore, which they did, so my hard brick phone, now is unbricked, until the next time i flash something without think about consequences :3

Not sure where that list came from, but for every variant of the 2013 X I've seen, 30.B7 is the bootloader when 4.4.4. is the newest rom that was flashed on the phone.
After applying the 5.02 leaks for Brazil XT1058, and "Retail" XT1053 the bootloader was 30.BC.
Now, if you are saying that when attempting to unbrick its better to flash one version higher than the bootloader on your phone, that good as well. You have to flash equal or newer than what was on your phone when attempting to unbrick.

yeah probably
i'm probably wrong and i don't want to mislead anybody, so i'll say, that was my personal experience, you guys can google the c*ap out of it like i did (15 tabs+/- per browser)

Please help
I bought a unlocked pure edition moto x directly from Motorola. Powered on this past Tuesday. Didn't install sim card yet. Notified me Wednesday there was a update. I clicked OK. Went to work
come home and the phone was stuck on the M screen. Got it to the boot loader clicked recovery. Had the android guy laying down with the exclamation point. Wiped cache. That didn't work. Done a factory reset that didn't work. On the boot loader screen where the options are available it says device is locked. And software version it says modified. I never modified it. So now I have to return for a refund. But how would this of happened? And,what does it mean by modified? Called Motorola and I done everything they said to. do. I never down graded the os either.

Moto g2 stuck on boot loader screen while rebooting
hey guys.
so recently i installed an app called "kingroot" which helps enhance performance by rooting. Today my device ran out of battery and when i connected it to a charger, bootloader screen automatically appears and shows: 'boot-up failed'. I have not installed any custom ROM and the device was running stock ROM (6.0).
To be honest, I am not a developer and have no clue about this. all options shown in bootloader lead to a dead end. The battery won't charge and connecting it to my pc wasn't helpful either. All I want to do is run my stock rom, which doesn't seem to be happening.
Device: Moto G 2014 (dual sim)(India)
Need help Urgently.
thanks

Long story short, and if you read that entire thread, and its progression you'll understand the long story, Right now, it would appear the GPT.BIN on your phone is NEWER than the GPT.BIN in any SBF you are trying to flash. Hence your problem.
You will likely have to wait until a newer SBF gets leaked. At this point, it might be after Lollipop SBF's start leaking.

I suddenly realized that I encrypted the phone when it's on 4.4.2 before playing with various SBFs, and that may be the reason why I cannot write anything any more....
I had the exact same problem with my XT1053. I was able to fix it by flashing the 5.0.2 GPT. If your variant has a leaked zip, it's in the root directory. I wouldn't recommend using anything but your own variant's, but if that's what you want to do so be it.

Thanks for the tips! You''re lucky! BTW, Where did you get the 5.02 GPT? from Brazil XT1058 soak test leak?
And yes, I'm really expecting the full lollipop stock rom to have a final try to save mine. I only heard Brazil XT1058 has the soak test for 5.02 and am wondering if I can leverage that...

[Q] Am I screwed? [SOLVED]

Hi all. I'm an idiot. I updated to the 5.0 rom, and tried to downgrade to 4.4.3. It went well, until my device tried to update to 4.4.4. Now I'm stuck with a bootloader (xt1053 30.B7) that says it's locked, says it can't be unlocked, and says

Please, is there any way to bring my device back to life? I've tried flashing pretty much anything I can get my hands on, but it always fails because the bootloader is locked. I tried unlocking it with the code I got from motorola a while back, but that's not working either. Again, please help if possible.

Hopefully the 4.4.4 will fix you up.

I am not very familiar with how Moto's phone's do their stuff. But, have you tried flashing the stock image for your device? One thing though, if you used the leaked soak test to upgrade your device, your screwed until the official lollipop image for your device comes up.

IF you updated to one of the 5.02 leaks (or soaks as they were called), and got this message when trying to downgrade by flashing an OLDER Moto SBF (like 4.4.4), then you will likely be stuck until a 5.02 SBF leaks.
GPT.BIN doesn't like being downgraded, or attempted to be downgraded.
However, if your bootloader still says 30.B7, I would try flashing the stock Moto Xt1053 4.4.4 SBF using mfastboot by following option 5 at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-ReturnToStock.html
So the bootloader does say it's 30.b7, but it also says it's locked. And when I try to unlock it, it says fastboot oem unlock disabled. I have tried flashing back to 4.4.4, but I think the updated gpt from 5.0.2 is messing it up.
As a few of us have tried to warn people, and just like the mad rush to flash kit Kat when it came out.... You will likely need to wait for the SBF of 5.0.2 for your device. Not much else you can do at this point.
Sorry for your unfortunate situation.
I managed to get it running again by flashing the gpt of the lollipop files. I'm doing my best to go to the 1053 lollipop build to avert another brick. Thanks all for the help!
And I'm successfully on the XT1053 lollipop build. Let it be known that I'm only on lollipop to avoid incompatibilities due to the new GPT I had to flash. Sorry Motorola. Trust me, I wish I had waited.

@WillisD is 100% correct...
Notice the message in the first shot?
Code:
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
preflash vaildation failed for GPT
And the shot showing the top of the AP Fastboot screen shows 30.BC which is the bootloader version for the leaked test/soak 5.02...
You attempted to downgrade, and the phone doesn't like it.
Please see -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot..., and the impacts of GPT.BIN and MOTOBOOT.IMG
At this point, if your phone is saying Invalid CID and stops when it tries to boot, you are likely stuck until a 5.1 SBF for your phone/carrier leaks, and you can mfastboot fash it. It is the only SAFE way.
There might be other ways (look in the threads discussing the leaked 5.02), but I wont suggest them as they wont take you back to 100% stock, and also introduce version mismatches on your phone which could cause problems/issues.

Just do NOT take any future OTA's if you're now running a gpt.bin and motoboot.img from a different rom than you are now running on your phone. If history is any indication, you are very likely to brick in this situation.

First off, you have an ATT XT1058... why are you trying to flash XT1058_GHOST_RETBR.... which is for RETAIL BRAZIL!?!
Is your bootloader locked or unlocked?
EDIT: never mind, I read here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61834453&postcount=78 then you have a locked bootloader...
so my advice...
Try to boot into stock recovery, and wipe cache, and reboot.
If that doesn't work.. try a factory reset (also from inside stock recovery) NOTE: this will delete your data, apps, pix, music, anything on the phone's /sdcard... etc..
Next, would be to try to re-flash Stock ATT 4.4.4 SBF using mfastboot (see the requirements and option 5 in post 2 of -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425 )
If that doesn't work... then you have no choice but to wait until the 5.1 SBF for ATT XT1058 leaks and is posted... and flash that using mFastboot.

Into bootloader any option work, only for get pictures from IMEI, ID, etc.
I will try re flash stock ATT using mfastboot cause trying do this in RSD doesnt work
One friend told me he solved his problem unlocking bootloader by a program that unlock it automatic, then he instaled android 4.4.4.
My question is that if can i do what you are telling me cause in stock recovery appear 30.BE unde AP Fastboot Flash Mode (s) line. And it mean 30.BE= android 5.1 brazil so maybe i have to do a downgrade?
i dont know if you undestand me.
Thanks for your time
NEW INFO
i will writte more datails:
After i tryed install failed Brasil ROM the info about my cellphone is the next:
Bootloader version: 30.BE (sha-34b7ccb, 2015-04-22 12:57:17)
Bootloader is: LOCKED (and can´t be unlocked by motorola steps cause my moto x is AT&T)
Thinking about it and looking for a lot places from 2 days i have next conclusion:
How now i have bootloader version "30.BE" i have two options:
First: Downgrade android but i need unlocked bootloader for do it.
Second option: Wait until ROM android 5.1 by AT&T (i read update is ready but i cant find ROM, i only found ZIP for put in my internal memory and update android from old android but i cant access to my internal memory cause my PC does recognized like memory device)
What do you think guys?

I can tell that English (or at least USA Engish) isn't your primary language, so hopefully you can understand me too
An ATT XT1058 that has never been updated to 4.4.4 or above can use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader. Since you've had 4.4.4 and above on there, you can't unlock.
30.BE is a 5.1 bootloader. That is part of your problem. Somehow, parts of the XT1058_GHOST_RETBR... 5.1 SBF did flash to your phone, but not all of it..
Are you sure you didn't unlock your bootloader? Boot to FastbootAP/Bootloader screen and tell me what you see.. Do you see LOCKED STATUS 0, or Locked Status 2, or Unlocked Status 3?

Your first option is not correct. You can't fully downgrade, even with an unlocked bootloader. You can partially downgrade, but that isn't 100% safe. There is a very good chance it wont work, or you'll brick even worse when trying to downgrade, or later when taking the OTA.
For your second option.. Correct. As of yet, the FULL SBF of 5.1 for ATT hasn't leaked. Only the OTA Zip file which is an incremental update, not a full update, and therefore can't be used to recover in this state. Sit tight. Its only a matter of time.
I know you probably want to use your phone NOW, so waiting isn't a good option... but it is likely your only SAFE option right now.

I never tried to unlock bootloader and before start to trying to upgrade to 5.1 brazil, bootloader appear "DEVICE IS: LOCKED" and now appear the same "LOCKED AND STATUS 0". (check the image if you can)
The question now is: maybe you know if the solution is wait until 5.1 Android for AT&T or even if i have this ROM maybe exist a possibility that my moto doesn't get fix? Maybe the question is hard to confirm 100% but maybe it is a 90 % possible that my moto get fix with this way.
I love this phone but i was too newbie and I confused ways to change ANDROID by mys XPERIA and HTC's phones.

I hate to say it, but yeah, you're likely stuck until an ATT 5.1 SBF is posted somewhere.

As I said earlier... flash using mfastboot (see the requirements and option 5 in post 2 of -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425 ) just use that 5.1 SBF... and I would consider including the mfastboot erase userdata command, or doing a factory reset after you flash... Yes it will erase your data, apps, SDCard, etc...
GHOST_ATT_5.1_LPA23.12-21.1_cid1_CFC.xml
also failed
error on GPT ..
Bootloader 30BE
accidentally flashed verizon Lollipop bootloader on it ..
now LP 5.1 ATT not working on it

Hi in same situation. Did u fixed it?

Bricked Motorola Moto G 2 Gen after root etc

Hi, a few months ago i unlocked bootloader and rooted my Android 4.4.4 Moto G (locked to Tesco UK) and that was fine but then i went to lock it all again so i could get the OTA update for Android Lollipop.
This is where the problems began... I thought i found the write files to do it but then i discovered after that it was an US version so it wouldn't work with Tesco.
Today i went to roll it back again to a UK version but it doesn't seem to work.
I have all the files I think but I am getting errors such as 'Mismatched partition size' and 'Image file is too big'. I'm not the best with these things so any help would be much appreciated. I currently have a bricked phone so the sooner the better please.
"Hab check failed for boot"
"Hab check failed for recovery"

She tried running the following commands:I also I suffered from it and still could not solve this problem to check the images ... the phone be unlocked or not does not affect the system upgrade , only the root so.
you could try downloading the version to install and usually with unlocked bootloader and flash the logo.bin to take the message unlocked bootloader
as the issue of operators, rom provided by different countries does not change the radio frequency of your ... I faced when it lost radio when I used my cell **** fastboot ERASE ALL ( NEVER USE IT IN YOUR LIFE ) ****
Partitions where there are these radio information is not modified when you put another ROM same as original ...
You will have to leave the unlocked bootloader and install the rom normally without root with nothing if it's what you want, if you block the bootloader will not be able to boot
https://mega.co.nz/#F!29RX1L6I!gfxcXgqkAhf5GDhr_aPGYg
You can download this link from roms of all official ROMS that exist on the Internet of all Motorola G2 this link below , I've tried to use one of them it is original with all files more still blocking the bootloader you will not able to boot .
