What you use fingerprint for. - Galaxy Note 4 General

Just a small thread I want to know what people use the finger sprint scanner for.. I personally use it to lock some apps and to unlock my phone.. Also be free to share any mods that include finger prints etc. Just to share, so other people can benefit, and learn ?

Do you use finger print security or another app?.

I use finger security, I also use the stock browser with fingerprint login

While I absolutely hate the fingerprint scanner for screen lock because its wildly inaccurate. I use it for private mode, which works great.
How does one protect an app using fingerprint? Or use it with the browser? Or with 1password?

Sincerely I disabled it... it doesn't work properly for me.

To protect an app you have to install finger security from the play store.
To login to a website you must use samsung stock browser and have fingerprint setup in settings before you first login to a website

On the Samsung ones not easily as you are wiping away the fingerprint as you scan yet on the apple ones it'll be very easy to trick due to just sitting the finger on the scanner

+1 for Seekdroid
Haven't had to put it to use thankfully but if my phone ever does get stolen, I feel bad for the poor fellow who gets his hands on it... Very powerful app! Can remotely track the device, activate an alarm if you've lost it at home, lock the phone remotely and even do a full wipe, all from your web browser. Currently inside my house and it locates me to an accuracy of 4 meters... And the BEST part, IMO, you can HIDE it from the app drawer on the phone itself!
And as mentioned earlier, Antivirus is not needed. 99.9% of apps that come through the Market are safe.
Thank you all. I am aware that there are hardly any viruses out there for android devices, but i am currently in the midst of trying.. keyword: trying to root my phone, and i dont want to put any viruses from the files i download from the PC, onto my beloved smartphone, so once again thanks guys
and if any one has some free time and would be willing to guide me through the process of getting rid of bloatware (ive already rooted my phone, and backed up everything i just dont know what to do next) i would be willing to ship 10$ =)

Download Script Manager from the market, then run one of the debloating scripts in the dev section. There's one by psouza and another one, I used the other one. It has options to keep certain apps in the script.

I think AV is good enough. Added feature is that you get remote wipe if your phone ever gets lost.

FYI common sense doesn't protect you from things such as exploit and web script based infections.
I personally use Lookout. But honestly its not something you need to worry about too much, yet. But I'm sure its going to be a problem next year. Play it safe and only install apps that have high install counts on the market and high ratings.

Well, unless you are doing A LOT of side loading (installing non market apps) from random sites or are using pirated applications there is absolutely no need for anti-virus on a linux based system..
You as the end user are 100% in control of what apps gain permission and using common sense by looking at what permissions your giving said applications is up to you to decide.
The only virus I've heard of was found in china and pretty sure it was a side loaded application and it would steal data like phone numbers and e-mail addresses and the person was selling the information to spam sites.
Like I said though, if your just downloading apps from the android market your fine.

Your right, android already does that. Unless someone writes a script/exploit to get around asking permissions for root since the browser doesn't run as a root application. Android has very high security when it comes to web browsing. Remember, we are talking about linux.
In my opinion the best protection is a firewall, DroidWall does the job well.

I am looking to buy a Nexus 7 as an e-Reader for a relative who is not skilled in the slightest with Android or any technology really. Is it possible to set the tab, or any Android device for that matter, to bring the Kindle app up as soon as the device starts?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Sorry for the typo in the title. Any ideas on this issue?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Not that I know off.
It would be best to remove all home screens apart from 1, then put the icon on it. Maybe put a big clock on there as well to fill up the space
Its a shame that the kindle app doesn't have a widget that you could stretch to fit full screen.
Oh the ignomy...
You can certainly make the Kindle app an ICon on the front page, and remove the ICons that you don't want - but I think you are doing your relative a disservice if you box them in to just the Kindle app.
Heck, get them a kindle if that is all they want.
But once they find Facebook keeps up with all their friends and relatives, there will be no holding them back.
I do not want the app to be locked. Just start with device and then they can exit to rest of OS.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
But will they be comfortable with the rest of the OS? If it's to be primarily an ereader it seems that the Fire would be their best bet. They can still branch out some, but they have the familiarity of Amazon's ecosystem. IMHO
This is the app you need:

I've found a solution. But, since my relative won't remember to close apps running in the background, is there a task manager app which will only let one app run at a time? So, when you open the Kindle App for example, it closes the Google books app running in the background?
You don't close apps on android, the OS does that as it needs to - it's much better that way since it means if you frequently use the same few apps they'll appear instantly. 'Closing' is a desktop PC thing (and even that's going away with Windows 8).
Does anyone know of some apps which allow me to add some plain text to the home screens? I want to put a text widget saying "Books" and under that add all the e-reading apps for my relative. Also, are there any apps which will allow for easier use of the device with one hand?

The Kindle is limited to merely the Amazon book store, unless I am mistaken. With the Nexus 7, books can be purchased from a variety of stores such as Kobo, Google or Amazon (whichever one is cheaper). Also, it can then be used for some basic media such as BBC iPlayer.

Little things 4.4 has that you've always wanted stock

I'll start...
T9 dialer, I noticed the other day I don't have to scroll through a list of thousands of contacts or search names, I can just open the dialer press 726 and Ramiro shows as the contact. Or 666 and Mom is who I see. 262 gets me Amanda. Etc. This is something I've been waiting for Google to implement since I got into android, so fairly exciting.
What else have you guys found?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Last check 4.3 and i think even 4.2 had the smart dialer (T9). I guess i don't have "thousands" of contacts in my phone so maybe that's why i didn't really need/use it.
They have upped the ante massively with voice recognition and particularly voice search with it being in my opinion the killer feature of 4.4. Google now while improved is still an annoying intrusion that I disabled after a day. I disliked it immediately but like to give these things a little time to see if they grow on me. The GEL is an embarrassing failure in my opinion and someone should lose their job for thinking it would be a good idea to fix the search bar on any screen let alone all of them. I know 2 others now with the N5 and we all kicked the launcher to the curb in short order.
One thing that I've seen little talk of is the stock dialer. I'm not actually sure if it's kit Kat or Google? I expected to dislike it but I actually like it and have continued to use it. It has some flaws like not searching the call log but the ability to start typing in the name of a local place and have it's number pop up before you can finish is very useful and if it wasn't for the amazing voice search (which also works in the dialer) I would probably list the dialer as the single best stock feature.
