Little things 4.4 has that you've always wanted stock - Nexus 5 General

I'll start...
T9 dialer, I noticed the other day I don't have to scroll through a list of thousands of contacts or search names, I can just open the dialer press 726 and Ramiro shows as the contact. Or 666 and Mom is who I see. 262 gets me Amanda. Etc. This is something I've been waiting for Google to implement since I got into android, so fairly exciting.
What else have you guys found?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Last check 4.3 and i think even 4.2 had the smart dialer (T9). I guess i don't have "thousands" of contacts in my phone so maybe that's why i didn't really need/use it.

They have upped the ante massively with voice recognition and particularly voice search with it being in my opinion the killer feature of 4.4. Google now while improved is still an annoying intrusion that I disabled after a day. I disliked it immediately but like to give these things a little time to see if they grow on me. The GEL is an embarrassing failure in my opinion and someone should lose their job for thinking it would be a good idea to fix the search bar on any screen let alone all of them. I know 2 others now with the N5 and we all kicked the launcher to the curb in short order.
One thing that I've seen little talk of is the stock dialer. I'm not actually sure if it's kit Kat or Google? I expected to dislike it but I actually like it and have continued to use it. It has some flaws like not searching the call log but the ability to start typing in the name of a local place and have it's number pop up before you can finish is very useful and if it wasn't for the amazing voice search (which also works in the dialer) I would probably list the dialer as the single best stock feature.

Haven't heard of this can you explain further? Double tap just auto zooms when I try it on websites.
Voice control and specifically sending a txt msg completely by voice gets my vote.

IT's a 4.4 feature for google maps. You Double Click, but on the second click keep your finger on the screen and slide up or down to zoom in or out. it's a neat addition, more convenient to be exact, but nothing to special.

Bed Side Clock Ap?

Is there a way to set it so when you plug the USB cable in, it shows a huge clock on the phone? Or an app that will allow this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
I use alarm Clock Plus v2
Do a search in Android Market for Captivate and you will find 3 apps out there. One is quickoffice, One is a car dock and the third is a desk dock that does what you are looking for.
All 3 are free
Desk Dock. Works perfect and looks good. Thank you so much for that information. I appreciate that.
NP happy to help out.

Can someone take a picture of the last 2? I tried looking on appbrain and couldn't see anything. Looked on my phone, but there are no pictures of the apps.
Also, with quickoffice, can you create documents from the Captivate? Only thing I see is opening files.
You can not find the apps if you use appbrain have to use the market on the phone.

Ok just a guess but if you are on T-Mobile if you search for Vibrant you will also fine at least 2 apps for the Vibrant. The desk dock and car dock.
From what I understand they will either be on all 4 SGS phones or you can get them from the market but searching for the phones name.

[POLL] How Many Tabs Do You Have Open?

Hey everybody,
So I've got another random question for you all. Haha, this time it's;
How many (broswer) tabs do you have open?
Answer the poll, and if you wish, reply to the thread with what you have open in those tabs or whatever!
Personally, atm, I have exactly 32 tabs open in Chrome... and I usually have more. LOL.
Haha, I only have 11 open right now in Chromium. I do usually have about 10 times that, but I recently found that telling my browser to not remember my tabs when I quit is a good way to not get stuck in tab hell
32? Wow. I open less than 10 tabs at a time.

Don't forget that Chrome uses hardware acceleration, so if you have a gfx card that supports it the sky's the limit! One of my favourite Chrome features is the ability to drag tabs out of one Chrome window and either drop them onto the Desktop to create a new window, or drag them from one Chrome window to another. How cool is that?

Browser with text reflow like Opera

Does any other browser do text reflow like Opera does? Not having it and having to scroll horizontally kinda defeats the purpose in a mobile phone...
The text reflow action is extremely useful. I had it on the Nexus AOSP browser I sideloaded onto my old Bionic and loved it. That browser doesn't work on the X and the AOSP browser in Play store is pretty good, but doesn't have the reflow capability.

Well, on my Moto X double tapping in Chrome just zooms in or zooms out. It does not wrap the larger text to the screen. You still have to scroll horizontally to see the whole line.
Chrome will reflow to a specified zoom level that you set in its settings and is probably the next best thing. Opera reflows text as you zoom in and out, but not as reliably as it should.

Dolphin reflows text.
Does it? I tried both regular and the jet pack and all it does is zoom without wrapping text.

I just checked and my zoom setting in Chrome is 125%. I went to a Yahoo site about the Chinese trade balance which has text across the whole screen. I double-tapped to zoom and the text got bigger, but did not reflow. I still had to scroll horizontally. If you go to a full text screen do you really get reflow on the text? It is certainly not working for me.

I'm a fan of Naked Browser too but it no longer does text reflow since the KitKat update. I can work around it much of the time using the text zoom option but it's not the same. I still need reflow sometimes depending on the web site. Opera does a fair job but does not allow zooming on all sites. Not sure I'm willing to use Dolphin.
Huh? I'm on note3 so I guess I dont have that problem. That would drive me up the wall.

Nothing noticeable. Maybe if you were getting hundreds of calls and text messages through the day. Right now I have it set to go off only when I get a SMS, a call, or a Facebook message. By default it flickers for 2 seconds every minute for 30 minutes for missed calls and SMS but I turned that feature off because that has more potential to kill battery than it going off just once for each notification or missed call.
Clickbait what?? bahahaha

i also saw something like this from another user, who complained about this case that the flash traveling through the case was causing hazy images from camera when shot with flash on as the flash was bouncing off the flash cutouts on the case, don't know if OP is also facing the same issue..

Xiaomi Mi Key/MiClick - Pressy Clone

I ordered 2 Xiaomi Mi Keys/MiClicks from TinyDeal and received them yesterday. They work great. They are basically little plugs that add an extra hardware button to your phone by using your headphone jack, but don't really disrupt any functions of your phone.
I have found that Hello KlicK from the Play Store works the best for my needs so far.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.helloklick.android
I am going to keep doing some research because I would really like the button to enable/disable Expanded Desktop. But, for now, I have single click set to Open App: Nova Launcher, and that allows me to skip the lockscreen and go right to my home screen. Double Click to Open App: Camera, and triple click to Open App: Hello KlicK. A long press naturally opens Google Voice Search even without Hello KlicK installed, so I left that option alone.
I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with one of these, and I would also be glad to answer anybody's questions about mine.
Related, i'm so please my Pressy has shipped now! Can't wait for it to arrive. Backed it from the start. I know there are these cheaper clones but the Pressy app looks pretty decent.

You'll like it. I think the concept needs to mature a little bit. There is a lot of potential with these little plugs. It would be pretty cool if some Xposed modules were created to allow access to the whole device, and not just be restricted to the basic software.
Look what finally arrived today!

double click fix?
Would love to find a double click fix without having to use "headset button controller" I much prefer the "ikey" app for assigning functions but no matter what you assign or disable a double click calls the last contact in the call log... If I find anything I'll post back, till then it's HBC in pressy mode for me.
