Afternoon gents,
I am trading my iPhone 4 for the HD7 but i don't get very good signal with O2, so i was thinking about buying the handset unlocked and then putting a Vodafone contract SIM in it.
But, will this affect phone updates as carriers control WP7 updates?
Thank you.
You will have to wait for O2 to push updates as it will have an O2 ROM on it (O2 splash logo, locked yahoo search etc).
The only way around this is to flash a Euro branded ROM using Goldcard (exactly what I did) or one of the other methods floating around in the dev thread.
What about buying the phone from one of the East Asia compaines?
Found a site which offers the handset for £250 - checked reviews everywhere and all have recieved their items without fault.
One would assume that these devices would not have the O2 ROM?
No problem with Asia Phone
I bought my HD7 from an Asian shop on ebay. No problems whatsoever and I am also on Vodafone. I did use the disconnect trick and am now runing the nodo update with no issues. I also got my 16GB phone a LOT cheaper.
Crack on, it's well worth it!
Edit: Of course it was completely inbranded

What's the disconnect trick?
Did Zune tell you that an update was available?

You'll be fine i bought my via o2 but same reason due to poor data signal i ported over to vodafone, and it works brilliantly, update is fine, recently HTC push the NoDoUpdate via ZUNE and everything is runing smoothly.
Same here, I've been on Vodafone for years but pre-ordered a PAYG HD7 from O2 then just got it unlocked and has been great since.
Granted I did flash the latest Euro ROM using GOLDCARD so have no problems with updates or anything but all in all very much glad I sold on my iPhone 4 when I did, thankfully found someone nice to buy it and paid what I did as got a Unlocked one straight from Apple when they first came out.
If i bought a HD7 from the O2 shop, how would i go about unlocking it?
Would this also remove the O2 boot logo?
(You'll have to excuse my stupid questions, i do computers not phones )
You could either pay a unlock site to give you a unlock code or if you know a O2 Contract Customer they can fill out the unlock code request form online and request one for free. If you do it that way it may take two or three attempts as some guys email back and say no cos it's a contract phone but then somebody won't check as much and just issue the code, know loads of people done it this way, took 2 attempts to get mine.
As for the branding NO it would not get rid of it, to do that you would need to flash the phone with a different ROM like a HTC Euro ROM using such as the GOLDCARD Method. This will not make any difference to your unlock status so you know so you can't unlock it by flashing another ROM, and you can flash as often as you want and it won't relock the phone, once it's unlocked it's unlocked.

If you had to do the disconnect trick then it isnt de-branded.
The debranded HD7s got the update on the day of release.
I got my HD7 from O2, unlocked it through O2, and then left and went to 3.
I also did the debranded as said on here, which was nice and easy, and I got the nodo update on the day of release

I assure it is unbranded and the update was not available on the day of release as reported all over the web. I have since however rolled back the update and received the official update with HTC additions via Zune.
So I bought the Galaxy Note international for my wife for her birthday. I full well knew that I wont be getting any official support from Samsung US. Those people are so incompetent anyways that its not really a loss. So I have a few questions for those of you who are using this device in USA.
1. Have you guys in US gotten the ICS update yet?
I ask because I am getting conflicted information everywhere.
2. If the hardware is international version, why does the country matter?
Very confused about this. I thought the good thing about having international version is that I wont need to wait for ATT to get off their backside to release updates.
3. Is there any way I can make my device simply talk to German or Indian servers to get the update?
I have rooted android devices before, so I am no stranger to the process. I would rather not do it on a device I am not using, simply because I want to keep getting official updates, without having to keep up with news on the device. So rooting to German ROM is the option only if Samsung has its head up its arse and update doesn't arrive this year at all.
Thanks for your help guys!

Your beat bet is to get a device from a region where ics is already released. It doesn't matter what country you're in, only if the country your device is from gets ics I believe. Not only is the updates better than ATT but I specifically got it for the hardware/ devs
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Thanks for the reply man. How do I find out what region the device was made for? It came with what I believe Russian documentation. Is there any way to know 100% sure? Using some serial number or something like that?
I want to say you can tell by the stock Baseband version that phone has, but I'm not 100% sure. Where did you buy this Note from? Amazon sells Brazil and Germany based ones for the most part I have heard. I bought mine on eBay and I THINK it is Germany, but not sure totally and I'm already custom and everything.
On the other hand, there might not be a way to tell what country you are on and how to get updates since you live in the states. I'm in the US too on ATT but ATT will have nothing to do with this Note. (They couldn't even recognize the IMEI number when I went into the store when I first bought it). Didn't know about the different model Notes until I got home and looked on XDA.
Andrew, I am on ATT as well but as my wife doesn't need a data plan (Wifi available everywhere we go), ATT doesn't even know that her line has a smartphone. Else they would push a useless data plan on us. Also, I got it from a third part seller at Amazon. Those people were as useful as a stick. Asked them where they get their stock from and never heard back.
If there is a way to find out country of origin, I would like to know. I've spent countless hours doing research on this, and for the first time, I have not been able to figure out a cellphone problem.
Also, I take it you already got your ICS update if your phone is German?

No, I didn't do an OTA update or Kies. I just PC Odined ICS, but now I'm on a CM9 build. If you are comfortable flashing and stuff, I would say just use PC Odin.
Hi
I have been a member of the site for a while but haven't really posted due to having a iPhone only visiting when i was given phones to fix and such that were android. i am making the jump away from the apple handcuffs and would like some information about stock roms and unlocking.
i want to get the GT-I9305 but cant seem to get hold of one from a what i deem a reputable supplier. i have decided to go to an orange store and but the locked version on pay as you go. i have found someone that offers unlock solutions over eBay for about a tenner im not too keen on rooting just yet for warranty purposes.
the main issue is i don't want all the orange software on it i want to go to the stock firmware. can this be done easily without voiding warranty? what about over the air updates will these come through just as normal as if it is a stock phone. i am only sceptical as im used to the iPhone and jail-breaking and unlocks that are not permanent.
can anybody help me out with these points to put me at ease.
Thanks

Yes if stock roms are available for that model .
what about over the air updates will these come through just as normal as if it is a stock phone.
Not as normal you no longer have the same firmware .
Two routes wait for Orange to update to JB and stick with official updates .
Or join XDA users flash stock unbranded rom ( does not void Samsungs warranty ) and update the same way instead of waiting for Orange to update .
Note stock updates/flashing does not require root .
see the Stickies page one .

plus if anybody is put off with the orange website saying the galaxy s3 lte is out of stock i can assure you that when ordered they are allocating the stock straight away and i ordered this afternoon and have been given a delivery date for the 12th of october.
Thanks for your help

I totally understand your concerns. I have had mine for two days and can honestly say that it hasn't come with loads of (cr)apps from orange. I was flabbergasted!
However, it has come with the usual tonne of Samsung bloat but i think that will come wherever you get the phone from.
I put apex launcher on because touch wiz is terrible. S-voice sucks balls! Other than that i'm in love with the phone and i'm not even going to bother to root or custom rom it because it works so well. Not sure how long that will last but nothing bugs me about the phone.
Hope this helps. If you want me to check anything on my phone, just ask.

My galaxy s3 i9305 is arriving tomorrow from orange and I wish to unlock it. Has anybody had any success off any websites as most list i9300 as the model?
Thanks
Dan[/QUOTE]
Ive used this site before for iPhone. and they have Galaxy S3 LTE listed? http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/unlock/index.php
In the drop down select Samsung as manufacturer and in model drop doqn look for Galaxy S3 LTE. If unsure try asking them I remember communication was excellent!
I just bought my Samsung Galaxy S III LTE Titanium today and I was also wondering how to I go about unlocking my phone because Orange sucks balls I want to use my current giffgaff SIM.
Is it possible to unlock without rooting?
If not what's the best guide to root a i9305?
Once rooted how do I unlock my phone?
Also I heard flashing custom firmware can increase a binary counter that is used to invalidate the warranty on the phone?
Is it possible to reset this counter back to 0 so it still appears that it's within warrranty?
Thanks in advance, xda is awesome.

I bought the Galaxy S3 LTE version from the Orange shop yesterday and can confirm there is a working unlock out there as I am now using my 3 sim card...for £10.95!
The unlock was purchased on eBay (add on to the eBay URL): /itm/Unlock-Code-4-UK-Samsung-Galaxy-S-3-LTE-GT-I9305-4G-Orange-T-Mobile-All-Networks-/170923288428
If the link doesn't work, the title is 'Unlock Code 4 UK Samsung Galaxy S-3 LTE GT-I9305 4G Orange T-Mobile All Networks' and is sold by a seller called 'specialize' and I received my code after 30 minutes. :good:

Unlocking=Lost waranty?
Hi,
I've called today Orange to ask if I will lose the waranty in case I unlock the S3 because I do not want to wait 3 months for them to unlock it.
They said YES i will lose the waranty.Any ideeas why and what alse can I do
Regards,
Orange branding on my titanium LTE is surprisingly non existent but the normal Samsung bloat is still there.
If the warranty is with Samsung & the phone shows unlocked on their database ( after eBay member has done it)
How can Samsung not honour the warranty?, surely you don't need to involve orange or am I mistaken?
I bought mine from Orange a fortnight ago and there is no Orange branding at all anywhere on the device
Soon as you buy your 4G s3 and you want root etc.... well follow this guide very closley

Couple of Noob questions if I may.
I want to get the I9305 LTE rather than the I9300 in the UK as the I9305 has 2GB RAM and DC-HSDPA which the I9300 doesn't, but:-
1 - Will a 3G sim work in the I9305 (obviously not at LTE speed)
2 - Is there a higher battery drain on the I9305 with a 3G Sim than on the I9300 (i.e. will it scan for LTE signal, draining battery, even if the sim doesn't support LTE)?

1. Yes will work no problem but you may have to unlock your phone if it is locked to a network. I had to sim unlock mine as it was on tMobile.
2. No it will not. In fact with the right rom and some of Samsungs rubbish removed I get much better battery life then I ever did on the I9300.
Can't you pay Orange a fee to get a carrier unlock code? You unlock your phones after having them for 3 months on contract for FREE.
In the process of negotiating an upgrade deal. Currently on Voda.
Just wanted to know the difference between getting the phone from Vodafone or P4U.
Does the branding make much difference ??
branded phones seem to get updates later as they have to get branding added and in some cases don't get some update at all due to vodafone/networks not signing the ok on versions
Huge difference as stated above, update always comes late on branded phones, or never come.
But unbranded phone gets updates directly from HTC not vodafone so you are guaranteed to have them as soon as they are released.
Also, you have no bloatware on unbranded phones, and normally unbranded phones are unlocked on any network meaning when you sell the phone, it worthes more. But there are exceptions, my galaxy s3 lte is unbranded but locked to orange.
Anyway, if p4u's price is acceptable, better go with them. I sacrificed my 40% off discount with Orange and went upgrade with p4u even paying a bit more, but I never regretted.
Anyone actually got a branded phone?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I can't comment on voda but I've just recieved a branded device from EE and Tbh there is no bloat or pre installed crapps in fact it looks completely the way HTC intended. I'm guessing different networks will have different amounts of input but more are straying away from loading the handsets with crap for update purposes. If your rooted it don't matter anyway.

I read reports on the Vodafone forum of their customers receiving phones that have Vodafone on the bootscreen, definitely branded and I would definitely avoid that if you can P4U will be unbranded and will of course price match anyway.

Can confirm the Vodafone version has a Vodafone boot and shutdown screen. They haven't put any bloatware on it but it's definitely branded
Is there any branding on the phone itself or just software?
I have the "One" branded to Three. As far as i can see there are branded start and shutdown and two branded apps "Three Music" and "Three Games". They seem to have also installed the Amazon and Ebay apps.. I think given a chance i'll be installed the HTC standard build as soon as one is available... neither of the above apps are worth anything to me..

Sorry to clarify, the hardware is identical and has no Vodafone markings.
The phones software is Vodafone branded and comes with both their CID and usual bloat.
Just to throw this out there.
When I had a unbranded S3 Vodafone users got their official OTA updates before me.
Pretty sure you could use Kies to get it the same time if you really wanted.
With Samsung you would never be left hanging for a JB compatible HBOOT if you wanted it.

Hi I have question, I get today HTC One Gold from P4U and there is Vodafone branded rom, I konow was lots question about this but can someone write me step by step what I spouse to do to get on my HTC One factory clear rom and after get update via OTA.
Thanks
Hello everyone,
I really want a P20 Pro. I'm in the U.S. and would be using the factory unlocked Canadian ( CLT-L04 ) version of the phone via AT&T. It's soo much trouble getting this phone in the States. One of the things I'm most concerned about is getting the Android Pie update. It's supposed to start rolling out on the 10th, and I cannot find a concrete answer if I will be able to get it on my device. Contacted Huawei via facebook and asked and this was their response...
" Regarding your concern about updates; please bear in mind that, all of our updates are rolled out in batches according to the IMEI number and geographical region. If you own an unlock device, it will take a little more time to get updates. When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA."
When the update are released, the carriers are in charge to send the update OTA - That part has me concerned. Since I'll be on AT&T and it's not an officially supported device by AT&T, it sounds to me that I won't be able to get the update.
Anybody else in the U.S. that could help provide some insight on this?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
worst case is that you have to update it manually but that is pretty easy but i have no doubt that they will update every p20 pro to pie BUt it also depends on the carrier so getting a unlocked/unbranded device is a big plus for updates.

Thanks so much for the info! So the listing says this... "Only International items are Factory Unlocked without carrier logo and/or region lock." Without carrier logo I'm assuming means unbranded ( excuse my ignorance, I've never purchased a phone I couldn't just pick up in the store ) . So I should be able to get the Pie update without issue?

Yea seems like it and you can always flash some unbranded firmware tho if needed
Thanks! Sure hope you're right. Just purchased the last one the seller had.
Units sold by carriers in Canada are unlocked and unbranded. Mine is from Koodo/Telus and it's unlocked straight out of the box (it's the law in Canada) and doesn't have any carrier branding or carrier apps.
I think that as long as you are connected to the internet (mobile data or WiFi), you will get the update when a carrier releases it.

That's the concern I have though. I'm not on a carrier ( At&t ) that carries this phone.
Now that I've ordered the phone, I'm having a hard time finding screen protectors and cases for it. Ones I like that is.
I have the same concern. I bought my P20 Pro by an importer, since here in Brazil it is not officially sold. I know the model is from Latin America because it is a CLT-L29 C605. But since I bought it, it just made an update and I'm still with the July update (8.1.0.152) since then.
So I'm in doubt if I'm actually getting the Pie right now on the 10th.
It's unlocked.
I'm loving the device, but it's sad to know that I have a smartphone released this year, last generation and I don't have updates support for it.

I'm almost 100% sure that once Canadian carriers push the update you'll get it to. Has nothing to do with the carrier your on, updates are IMEI and model related. So if it's say a Telus/Koodo phone, you'll get the update when they push it.
That's been my experience anyways.
Ps. I'm using the same phone on Koodo now.
You should be on firmware .120 correct?

But you'll be fine for updates.
So receiving the updates to the phone varies by the carrier? The carrier is the one that has to push the updates, like T-Mobile...?

Carriers push the updates yes. But say I buy a phone outright from Rogers and I use it on Telus...Rogers will push the updates to the phone, not the carrier I use it on. And I think it happens because the IMEI would originally be in the Rogers database.
This has happened to me several times now.

This has happened to me several times now.

My phone isnt branded, so I dont know what carrier it is... because I bought it off a tech-store.
And for network, I am from Macedonia and I use VIP-MK sim card, which, as you said VIP wouldnt push the updates because the phone isnt from there, I don't know from where they're getting the phones to their warehouses, haha.
I just got a new update tho, b159, hopefully I will get the newest update after I install this one. ^^

Possible that if it's unbranded and belongs to no carrier that you'd receive the updates from Huawei servers?

I dont think so.
Because there are a lot of updates for my phone to firmware finder, which I think they're from Huawei's servers, right?
And since I boight my phone like a month ago, this is my first update. I was kinda stuck at 152 with July's security patches, and a while ago I received 159 with October's security patches. All I want to say by this is that if I'd receive the updates from Huawei, I'd have now the newest security patches, which is 161 version I think.
Who knows...that's just my opinion.
