Voda vs P4U on branding. - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the process of negotiating an upgrade deal. Currently on Voda.
Just wanted to know the difference between getting the phone from Vodafone or P4U.
Does the branding make much difference ??

branded phones seem to get updates later as they have to get branding added and in some cases don't get some update at all due to vodafone/networks not signing the ok on versions

Huge difference as stated above, update always comes late on branded phones, or never come.
But unbranded phone gets updates directly from HTC not vodafone so you are guaranteed to have them as soon as they are released.
Also, you have no bloatware on unbranded phones, and normally unbranded phones are unlocked on any network meaning when you sell the phone, it worthes more. But there are exceptions, my galaxy s3 lte is unbranded but locked to orange.
Anyway, if p4u's price is acceptable, better go with them. I sacrificed my 40% off discount with Orange and went upgrade with p4u even paying a bit more, but I never regretted.

Anyone actually got a branded phone?

I can't comment on voda but I've just recieved a branded device from EE and Tbh there is no bloat or pre installed crapps in fact it looks completely the way HTC intended. I'm guessing different networks will have different amounts of input but more are straying away from loading the handsets with crap for update purposes. If your rooted it don't matter anyway.

I read reports on the Vodafone forum of their customers receiving phones that have Vodafone on the bootscreen, definitely branded and I would definitely avoid that if you can P4U will be unbranded and will of course price match anyway.

Can confirm the Vodafone version has a Vodafone boot and shutdown screen. They haven't put any bloatware on it but it's definitely branded

Is there any branding on the phone itself or just software?

I have the "One" branded to Three. As far as i can see there are branded start and shutdown and two branded apps "Three Music" and "Three Games". They seem to have also installed the Amazon and Ebay apps.. I think given a chance i'll be installed the HTC standard build as soon as one is available... neither of the above apps are worth anything to me..

Sorry to clarify, the hardware is identical and has no Vodafone markings.
The phones software is Vodafone branded and comes with both their CID and usual bloat.

Just to throw this out there.
When I had a unbranded S3 Vodafone users got their official OTA updates before me.

Pretty sure you could use Kies to get it the same time if you really wanted.
With Samsung you would never be left hanging for a JB compatible HBOOT if you wanted it.

It's got no Vodafone branding on the actual handset, and no pre-installed apps, only the Voda logo when staring up and shutting down

Yeah thing is...your cid

[Q] Using HD7 on Vodafone UK Network

Afternoon gents,
I am trading my iPhone 4 for the HD7 but i don't get very good signal with O2, so i was thinking about buying the handset unlocked and then putting a Vodafone contract SIM in it.
But, will this affect phone updates as carriers control WP7 updates?
Thank you.
You will have to wait for O2 to push updates as it will have an O2 ROM on it (O2 splash logo, locked yahoo search etc).
The only way around this is to flash a Euro branded ROM using Goldcard (exactly what I did) or one of the other methods floating around in the dev thread.
What about buying the phone from one of the East Asia compaines?
Found a site which offers the handset for £250 - checked reviews everywhere and all have recieved their items without fault.
One would assume that these devices would not have the O2 ROM?
No problem with Asia Phone
I bought my HD7 from an Asian shop on ebay. No problems whatsoever and I am also on Vodafone. I did use the disconnect trick and am now runing the nodo update with no issues. I also got my 16GB phone a LOT cheaper.
Crack on, it's well worth it!
Edit: Of course it was completely inbranded

What's the disconnect trick?
Did Zune tell you that an update was available?

You'll be fine i bought my via o2 but same reason due to poor data signal i ported over to vodafone, and it works brilliantly, update is fine, recently HTC push the NoDoUpdate via ZUNE and everything is runing smoothly.
Same here, I've been on Vodafone for years but pre-ordered a PAYG HD7 from O2 then just got it unlocked and has been great since.
Granted I did flash the latest Euro ROM using GOLDCARD so have no problems with updates or anything but all in all very much glad I sold on my iPhone 4 when I did, thankfully found someone nice to buy it and paid what I did as got a Unlocked one straight from Apple when they first came out.
If i bought a HD7 from the O2 shop, how would i go about unlocking it?
Would this also remove the O2 boot logo?
(You'll have to excuse my stupid questions, i do computers not phones )
You could either pay a unlock site to give you a unlock code or if you know a O2 Contract Customer they can fill out the unlock code request form online and request one for free. If you do it that way it may take two or three attempts as some guys email back and say no cos it's a contract phone but then somebody won't check as much and just issue the code, know loads of people done it this way, took 2 attempts to get mine.
As for the branding NO it would not get rid of it, to do that you would need to flash the phone with a different ROM like a HTC Euro ROM using such as the GOLDCARD Method. This will not make any difference to your unlock status so you know so you can't unlock it by flashing another ROM, and you can flash as often as you want and it won't relock the phone, once it's unlocked it's unlocked.

If you had to do the disconnect trick then it isnt de-branded.
The debranded HD7s got the update on the day of release.
I got my HD7 from O2, unlocked it through O2, and then left and went to 3.
I also did the debranded as said on here, which was nice and easy, and I got the nodo update on the day of release

I assure it is unbranded and the update was not available on the day of release as reported all over the web. I have since however rolled back the update and received the official update with HTC additions via Zune.

Orange branding?

Hi,
If I buy this phone from Orange/EE does anyone know what extra rubbish comes with the phone that they put on?
Or is it still pretty much the same as if I bought a generic one from somewhere like Amazon?

It will be branded and so will get delayed updates. If you want an unbranded one that's still subsidized by a contract go to Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U.
Also you could buy an unbranded one from this site called LambdaTek. Site looks bad but It's where I got mine from and its cheaper than CPW

Thanks for that. Although once you add on postage it's only £2.50 more to buy it from Amazon and I know that they have a great returns policy (just in case!)

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware that it will be branded. I'm just wondering exactly what the difference would be on an Orange branded phone. If the delayed updates are the only difference then that doesn't bother me too much but if they add loads of Orange software or disable things then that matters more to me.

I don't know if they would disable WiFi tethering...that's the only thing I can think of them possibly wanting to disable. Maybe someone else knows.
Orange have indeed disabled the WiFi hotspot functionality.
I found a thread which showed how to amend the APN settings to re-allow the hotspot to work but the APN's are locked.
The solution is to create a new APN using the details from the below link and now the hotspot works perfectly.

[Q] Any news on HTC One 1.29 update for Three Branded Version?

Any news yet for the latest update for Three branded phones?
There wont be yet - but when I had a Three branded One X I remember them being one of the quicker networks getting the updates out but it could still be a couple of months after the unbranded update hits the UK
O2 and Vodafone UK appear to be pushing the updates already. I'm waiting for Orange/T-Mobile UK.
How can there be such a big discrepancy between Three and Vodafone etc. Vodafone ireland released the update today but nothing on Three at all - are they just slow getting these things out?
Wonder if they'll be any quicker than they were releasing the jelly bean update for the HTC One X? Took 3-4 months in total after most other networks. That's why I vowed never to purchase a handset from Three UK again.

I too have 3 branded nothing yet think it will be quicker to wait for soff then change cid move to non 3 Rom and continue that way I too had a one x 3 took forever but I managed to swap for a non branded handset so was all good

Three Ireland told me mid May for update? who knows though they didnt mention a year haha
Totally worth waiting for S-OFF and move over to stock HTC ROM - I cannot see that Three do anything worth while to their version anyway...
i unlocked the bootloader last night! how does S-ON affect the phone? Does it just mean no OTA updates?
Three UK informed me it was in testing. A few more weeks isnt going to hurt anyone. Rather have a bug free update.

The base for the 3 UK update will be the stock HTC update. Any bugs in this update will not be altered by 3.
The only bugs that 3 will need to sort out are the ones that they introduce with there bloatware.
any further news yet??
I missed a call from 3 re the software update. Will ring them back soon.
Ok, it's not far away. 2 weeks max. Apparently 3 sold a lot of HTC One's
As spikeydoo2006 said, 3 UK were one of the slowest carrier to update ota on one X
I would be very surprised if they're any different with One.
If you want the latest update now on 3 branded One then flash a custom Rom.
ARHD is very close to stock in appearance, I have been using on my One for several weeks

Nothing at all, keep checking every day...
This thread has gone very quiet. Why?
Any news from 3 ?
Wrong thread.. Ignore
Have been away on holiday for the past week or so, was hoping that there would be a nice update ready for me on my return. Guess not. Still nothing. Poor show Three! :crying:

Anyone flashed a WWE RUU over Telstra

Hi guys
I have a black Australian unlocked Telstra HTC One, but there is no sign of any OTA's from Telstra any time soon...
I am wanting to flash a WWE RUU on to it so that I am not carrier restricted
Am I able to flash an Asian WWE RUU over the Telstra one? Has anyone done this yet?
I'm not exactly experienced in the world of Android HTC and their various flashing methods, but would flashing via the RUU be any different to rooting your phone and flashing another custom or stock ROM?
I only say this because my Telstra HTC One was rooted after I bought it and it is now running a custom ROM flashed via CWM recovery and no longer has any Telstra branding.
Edit: I now understand where you are coming from now. I wouldn't have thought you could flash an original ROM based on another phone CID and I can't imagine being able to change your CID without first unlocking the bootloader which kind of defeats the original purpose as you'll end up with a "tampered" phone one way or another.
You can do it but you'll need to change your CID to match the RUU you're going to run.
I'm not sure if you're able to do this with only boatloader unlock any more.

Dang... Oh well, I'll see if I like the HTC1 first, then decide on grabbing a black one from Expansys or Kogan when they have the international unbranded quickly updated versions.. Waiting for updates from Telstra is like men having babies - not happening anytime soon
any luck?

hey man, any luck finding a HTC One Telstra RUU yet? I'm in the same boat. ive been waiting 6 months and still no RUU, been emailing and calling HTC loads and nobody is bothering to help or care. I dont need the RUU, but its good to have just in case.
The only decent piece of info ive managed to get was about HTC Australia authorized repair center.
So basically the company that do repairs in Aus are FoneBiz. They told me today when i called them, that even if you have rooted/unlocked bootloader etc, they will try their best to do an In-Warranty service, but if their system wont recognize the phone, then it'll be an Out of Warranty service.
The Good news is that since the HTC One is pretty much unrepairable, as far as being able to actually get into the handset, is that FoneBiz will just do a full handset replacement. In-Warranty its obviously free, but Out of Warranty is only around $280. So essentially you get a brand new HTC One for less than $300.
So anyone with a Telstra handset who has broken/bricked HTC One, at least you know you can get a brand new replacement for under $300, possibly even free!

[Q] Confused - D5803 with T-Mobile "stuff" on it

Color me confused... I ordered the D5803 (not from Sony, from a reputable 3rd party retailer) to use on AT&T. The box it came in looks legit with zero T-Mobile markings or anything. However, the phone has a T-Mobile splash screen that shows briefly after the Sony splash screen, and it has T-Mobile "bloat" (My t-Mobile, Norton Security w/ Tmobile logo, Tmo Media Center, etc.). It works fine on AT&T, but I was really hoping for one with no branding for the direct connection to Sony for updates... and I'm concerned that won't happen here. Is it possible this is some T-mobile variant from another country that'll still get updates from Sony?
Of course after I post the question I think I've figured it out... it appears it's the German T-Mobile variant - which is still the D5803. The question, then, is how do updates work over there in Germany... will T-mobile have to approve it or will it come straight from Sony? If straight from sony, then there really isn't a problem with using this device, for me anyway.
You probably won't get many updates. I owned multiple branded devices (Hutchinson drei). The provider has to modify every single update before you get it - they don't do that very often, e.g. I got exactly 2 updates on my good old LG 4X HD.
You could try flashing the UK stock rom with Flashtool. Your phone should keep working properly, just without the T-mobile bloat. At least that's how I always dealt with branded Android devices.

Hey...I know you.. Hahaha
You could always manually change the firmware to another variant

I actually resolved the issue with the following post and picking a non-branded file.

I have the same problem for my z3c I bought 2 days ago from amazon.com. I'm still waiting for a response from the seller and wish it could be updated to L 5.0 without problems and without this ugly logo of t-mobile and bloatwares..
