Best Way to Backup - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the best way to backup so after I do anything I can get back?
TWRP or CWM, can we even do CWM on this phone?

TWRP is just fine. Does a great job.
But if you're addicted to installing a lot of ROM's and want to backup apps and their saves/settings, I would recommend Titanium Backup (if you're rooted). Easy to dump all your apps the way they were on any new set up.

I think Titanium Backup is kinda borked now. At least one of the ROM developers explicitly says not to use it, and two times I tried using it with Note 4, it was extremely frustrating. It would perform a backup just fine, but while restoring it would get stuck on this app or that. So you had to reboot after every 3-5 apps restored. Some of the restored apps would not work and had to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Others reported corrupted ROMs.
On one of recent app sales I got My Backup Pro for free. It seems to have some of the same functionality. I will give it a shot next time I am changing ROMs.

Not 100% sure. But it looks like you can do cwm:

I haven't seen anything. I have had a few paused on me but I would close it and restart to finish the left overs. Back on the Note 3, we had the same problem on a few devices. Some has tried the TB Fixer. Dont know if it'll work on the Note 4.

I guess the problems are not universal. Here's the linky to the discussion.

Irritating Market issue

I received my phone back a few days ago and I instantly flashed Cyan 5.0.6 test 3.
However I have a really annoying issue where my Market isn't quite 'correct'.
It seems to be missing the 'top paid' tab.
It also takes an age to load the info for any app I click on and the status stays at 'installing' even though it is installed and it will only refresh when I reboot.
I have tried to restore the backed up propriety apps, nandroid backup and restore, flashed a stock rom, flashed cyan 5.0.1
But NOTHING works.
I know the slow market is related to the missing tab, it's like half of the market app hasn't loaded properly.
I had this issue before my phone went off for repair and one day it fixed (I don't know how) but as soon as it did, it performed as it should and it took seconds to load app data and install, it also stated the app was installed.
I suppose what I'm looking for is HOW can I completely reload the Market from scratch?
Thanks guys.
J
Wow that is so weird... I assume you do wipe/cache/dalvik before flashing a ROM right? Have you tried cyan 5.0.6 yet? If not, give it a try, do the wipe before flash of course, and hope that works... Also, do you have a backup app? like titanium back up or back up pro? Did you set it to auto restore perhaps? Probably just a bad market back up? Thats all I can think about... If it doesnt work, then its beyond me brother

Hi Man,
I know it's really bugging me.
I've tried everything including wiping the Dalvik and normal cache.
I think I might try Enomer's ROM to see if that solves it but I can only tether at the moment as we've moved house and I won't have BB back for 2 weeks.
I have Titanium pro installed as I have over 400 apps on my phone!
Hey bro,
Apparently there have been a few reports about the same issue with the market, probably has something to do with the market update. Anyway, try uninstalling the market via titanium if you can that is. And reinstall. Nandroid before doing it.

Backing up texts

I'm flash happy but every time I do all my text history is gone. Where are those kept so I can save them between roms?

You will lose them unless you back them up. I use sms backup+ from the market. It links your messaging app with gmail so you can back up and restore.
Sent from my GT-I9000
If you use Titanium Backup, your texts are automatically backed up when you do a full system data + apps backup. You can restore them manually from the Backup/Restore tab of TiBu (it's one of the items in green, I forgot which one exactly). Just make sure you don't choose to restore all system data with TiBu or you might mess up your ROM and have to reflash. You'll have to reboot your phone after the restore for your texts to show up.

+1 SMS backup + is really easy and works flawless for me.
Don't use titanium backup to restore texts. Often it will cause force closes that require a reflash to fix depending on which roms you are moving between.
You could just change roms without using odin or clearing like I do, heh.

And this also isn't a best way to install a ROM. Yeah it works, but you also can run the risks of a bad install. I think we'll all agree, the last thing we need is more threads regarding constant force closing or soft-bricked phones.
---
I REALLY like SMS Backup+. I have automatic backups set, and since everything gets backed up to my Gmail account, that's one less thing I need to remember to copy off the phone before a ROM flash.

You shouldn't have to use odin but I agree. Definitely clear cash and data.
I don't think we should be recommending odin one click to everyone because it can harm the newest build of captivates. It's also very unnecessary.

I disagree. Bad ROM installs usually mean fc's, isolated problems and maybe stuck at boot screen. If that happens, simply wipe data+cache and try again. Flashing back to stock on the other hand--if something goes wrong, you're looking at a soft-brick (requiring a jig on some Captivates), worst-case-scenario, your bootloader is corrupt and you hope you know someone with a JTAG.

[Q] backing up for every flash

Hi, a small question.
As some of you here that uses Rocket rom and has been flashing every new update by Eybee, i have settings made for apps that i uses, i usually do a fullwipe, and it's tedious to redo all settings from ground up once i flash and redownloading apps. Are there ways i could save the apps and it's settings at the same time, hence i do not need to redo everything for every fullwipe/flash?

Yes. Redo backups for new data. Some apps won't hold it no matter what.
System settings is something I don't do a restore for just to be safe. I can have all my regular settings loaded in no time now.
I'd Suggest mybackup pro as a better alternative

TB doesn't back up system apps by default. You can have it backup whatever you want though. Years ago I paid for it so I still use it. Can't comment on the other as I haven't felt the need to try anything else.

All my apps are FC'ing

Hey, I was using Beast 7/1/13 and it worked great,
used pimp my rom, voodoo sound, semaphore manager, rom toolbox lite
after i installed the new beast rom my apps suddenly force closes... everyone one of them.
the first error i see is,
Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped.
I have no idea what to do!!!
wiped/formated everything and resroted the rom with the nandroid backup from before the update but everything still keeping to force close and that message is running everytime
EDIT:
googled my issue and someone said the fix is to wipe the contacts storage, i did and it worked... so if there is an admin here, you can close this thread!
That is a common failure when switching Roms. Sometimes you can destroy your filesystem with restoring the app data too. So flash again and this time restore apps without the appdata.
Before you reflash you can try to delete those app data. Everytime when i got this it has helped. I never busted my whole filesystem. Let me know if this works for you too.

First of all thanks.
How can i delete the app data before re-flashing/ re-flash without the app data?
And by the way, it's weird... I thought that when i upgrade from 2 builds of the same rom it should work fine... :S
I think i understood what your saying... your talking about clean flashing and then using titanium backup to get my apps back?
you're welcome.
i don't know the beast rom. I use Elites 4.2.1 Beta.. (btw did you tried elites rom? Do you know how it is compared to Beast?)
but my way to get the app info is long pressing the app on the app drawer and when it gets to the homescreen i move it to the app-info panel. That'S the easiest and fastest way.
Normal way would be settings --> apps ---> tap on the app you want
once there you hit "delete data" Sometimes a reboot is needed. Or try it 2 times. Or if the first didn't work do it again and then reboot.
This shouldn't happen when you just update your beast rom. But sometimes it does on the Elite roms too. Not often but it happened. The biggest screw up was when i changed from ELite to Cyanogen mod.
right i talk about clean flashing and Titanium Backup you just flashed the update rom without doing 3 wipes right?
#
if yes the best way would be to do a clean flash again. And than if you got problems with your backed up apps try what i have said. Are u using Titanium?
cheers

Don't know elite roms... you got i9000 right?
I was just upgrading builds so i didn't do a clean install... now i'm kinda mad about myself for not backing up my titanium as often as my titanium backup as often as i backup my nandroid... i think i'm gonna backup all info, do a clean install and restore everything without the data... hope it'll go out well... learning my lesson i guess
Edit: another thing that comes into mind is restoring my 27/12 titanium backup backup (XD) and then working my way up from there..
Edit 2: My whatsapp says that my internal storage is too low while i got 800mb free... :S and now after clearing the data in titanium backup and re-working it it fc's again.
Edit 3 and last: I ended up doing a clean install and learning that i should backup my titanium backup more often since i now have to restore from 27/12

[Q] slow boot

I've had my phone @ 1 month, and other than rooting it I never had to reboot. I used Hasoon's Desire_C_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0 to install the recovery, root, and superuser. I still have the stock ROM and software. I have installed NovaLauncher, AvastMobile Security, Titanium Backup Pro, and Holo Lockscreen. I haven't disabled or uninstalled any of the apps that came on the phone (Bell). For what ever reason today, when I hit the power button to wake the phone it went into slow motion for almost a minute, then seemed fine. My calendar and contacts ended up all messed up. So I restored ContactStorage with Titanium Backup which recommended a reboot. I held the power button until the Restart menu appeared and hit restart. The phone shut down and rebooted, which seemed slow to me, roughly a minute to get to the Sense Lock screen, and another 30 seconds to get to the Holo Lock Screen. Once the lockscreen was engaged the home screen appeared, but the phone was very sluggiish for @ another minute, then all seems fine.
Is this amount of time normal to restart the phone? or has something been changed somehow?
thanks in advance.

The stock rom is pretty slow, and the stock launcher being there (since you haven't uninstalled any bloatware) doesn't help out to make it faster.
You can try installing a custom kernel. Links are in the index thread. That could help you speed up a little.
What I would recommend is switching to CM10 or any of the roms based on it.
So bottom line, yeah with the stock rom its pretty normal to get a lot of lag.
P.S.

Try out Rom toolbox.. or any app that can force un-install other apps and make sure to not remove anything important (Common sense eh)
Also consider flashing a custom Rom, they can help with bloatware issues, everything (I think) can be found in the index so start there.
Remember to always Hit Thanks when people help you, and whenever you use someones work, or if you appreciates someone work, and also the verifications stop after 10 posts i think, which is when you are able to post in the development section as well

I've installed Rom Toolbox Lite, and froze a lot of the bloatware. Sped things up quite noticeably. I froze the HTC lockscreen app, but it appears to be still running.Should I uninstall it?
As I install apps to replace the clock, calendar etc should I also be uninstalling the same original apps?
I haven't tried the backup or nandroid backup yet. Is this considered a replacement for Titanium? Are the nandroid backups the same as those done from the bootloader?
I've been looking for a tutorial but have not found any. Does anyone have a link to one?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again for all the help.

The backups that you take from recovery are called nandroid backups For the lockscreen, take a backup of the apk in your sdcard then delete it from system/app. If it works then great, if not then paste your apk back to system/app You are doing this at your own risk!

You can use titanium backup. It's the one I prefer. But there are several more that are pretty good, just look for them. =3
I think that is antispam, so it should be after 10-20 posts, when the restriction on posting in the development forums lifts.
P.S. Make a nandroid backup from recovery every week or two or before you make major changes. If the system is stable make another one so that in case you decide to do something else you have your phone ready.
Restoring from backup deletes all the whatsapp and IM messages up until the day you made the backup, so take that in mind.
Keep the last 2 of them as a backup of the backup on your PC at all times. It's a lifesaver.

I agree. I always keep 3 backups with me (not that anyone asked )
1. Stock Clean Unrooted (my very first nandoid)
2. A Sense Custom Rom (rev sense5)
3. A cm10 Custom Rom (cm10)
Every two weeks I try to update my current backup. And yeah, keeping your backups in your PC is good.

i do neither, i have no back ups, currently my phone is just sitting in fastboot somewhere in my room waiting for the CM7 kernel.. until then i just don't bother using it xD I have my 4x, Galaxy w, and my new (old) hTC Dream
thanks to all who have helped!!
I have uninstalled 69 apps that are either bloatware from Bell and HTC, or are apps I would never use. I used Titanium to freeze the apps 1st, and see if there were any ill effects. Once I determined that what was froze did not affect any other apps, I backed up the frozen apps (batch), and then uninstalled the frozen apps (batch again).
One big plus by using Titanium to remove bloatware was when the uninstall finished, it did not uninstall 2 of the apps I had froze, getting info on these apps showed they were tied to the ROM, Picasa Web Album, and Google Play Music.
Updating CWM to the latest 6.0.3.0 was also a bonus, as ROM Manager now works for Nandroid backups without having to reboot manually (remove and replace the battery).
I will eventually get around to trying custom ROM's when time permits. For now I'm trying different apps such as calendars, keyboards, and launchers. With the multitudes of available apps, anyone have suggestions for keyboards, calendars, and launchers. I've just installed NovaLauncher and ClockQ.
When alternative apps are installed such as calendars, is it preferable to uninstall the same apps that came with the phone?
thanks again to all.
Well keyboard I use stock cm10 don't use calender and for launcher switch between holo launcher HD and sf launcher
Sent from my HTC Desire C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Launcher. Nova. Always.
Keyboard. SwiftKey. Always
Clock. Android 4.2 clock. Look in the themes and apps section.
Edit - If you use another launcher than you can not use htc widgets.. So as i use nova, i always use player pro as a music player.
