[Q] if you can unlock bootloader on motorola.com, why aren't people doing it?

How come people aren't talking about this? Would I be able to root if the bootloader is unlocked?

The popular carriers like AT&T and VZW don't allow it - so that prevents a large group from doing it.

Cause most carrier phones don't have their option to unlock the boot loader. But yes if you do unluck the boot loader you can root. But you can also root without unlocking thanks to jcase's pwnmymoto root method.

Most people aren't talking about it because I guess they figure you know whether or not you bought a phone that could be unlocked. If you are bootloader unlocked then yes - you just flash su.zip in cwm or twrp and you are good to go.
So if you are on Sprint or T-mobile, US Cellular or international go for it.

Unlocking the bootloader voids warranties as well...doing it through the website makes that void permanent whereas if you did it without the website you can still have your phone go through the warranty process as long as you unroot and relock the bootloader. that's what i love about the nexus devices

There's no 'non Chinese' path for Verizon phones. Unless you have a developer edition

While this may be true for Nexus devices, it doesn't apply to the Moto X.
The Moto X bootloader has 3 states:
Locked, Unlocked, and Re-Locked
Once you have unlocked, if you subsequently re-lock, the status changes to "Re-Locked". You can NEVER get it back to "Locked". So regardless of whether you get your code from the official Moto Unlock site or the Middleman, they still know that you had unlocked previously. There is no way around this...

Exactly! I'm not sure what he is waiting for. An BL unlock exploit to come along? Dan Rosenburg (author of the Razr M Bootloader exploit) has said himself that it is extremely unlikely that a new Moto BL unlock exploit will EVER come along.
@Radio2006 : The "china" method could end tomorrow. It is 99.999% sure to be the ONLY way you will ever get unlocked. If being unlocked is important you, I would urge you not to wait.

Its China method quick, before it ends again....maybe for good....
Or it won't happen. The bootloader won't be "cracked". If it could be, it would be by now.
I'd get in on the China method, or accept a life of no proper root for your device. And no developer made updates after the X stops getting official updates.

Hey, gee thanks guys. I didn't know that. The China method has already shut down according to an XDA post that I read earlier. So I was hoping that something would occur later.

It closed earlier this year, then reopened a couple months later. It is still available now. Find the thread titled "China Middleman Back?" Thread.

Nope. Lots of moto x variations can be unlocked. And they all can do anything a dev edition can do, except keep their warranty.

Hello all.
Ok, I have read all the posts/threads for rooting and am still confused as each thread links to another which links to another, which changes another ,etc. Need proper organization of threads it looks like.
Anyway, I just received the GSM Unlocked MOTO X (NOT DEV ED.) for TMO or ATT.
How do I root? Again, I have read the threads and am terribly confused. I have the 4.2.2 software and have NOT updated to any OTA.
Can someone clearly highlight the steps I should be taking?
Am not a noob and currently own N5 and S4 Dev Edition.

then, MotoWpNoMo to keep root as w/o you have a "temp" root, or tethered, if that is the correct term. AKA, reboots/shutdowns can trip it back to stock w/o root.

I am thinking of unlocking mine as well, and I am on 4.4 already, just got the phone today.
Not sure if I should unlock, it will be my daughters phone and I'll probably need the warranty

Since you've unlocked the bootloader, follow the root directions for the dev edition. What you're doing is wholly unnecessary.
Unlock bootloader, download latest CWMR or TWRP and SuperSu, then fastboot (or mfastboot) flash recovery, boot into recovery, adb push supersu.zip /sdcard, flash in recovery. Done.

I'd start with root without unlocking.

Thanks..that is what I was looking for. So, should I update to OTA first since I am unlocked, or root now per dev edition instruction? If so, then how would I take the OTA if I am on custom recovery? Is there a zip of the OTA?

You should take the 4.4 OTA first. In order to take the OTA you need to have stock recovery. Once you take the OTA then you can flash a customer recovery and flash a super user app through it.

From current experiences with other devices, that is exactly what I did. I am now updated to 4.4, with custom recovery and root!

Rooting with an unlocked bootloader is perhaps the easiest thing to do. You know this from past experience so why would it be any different with the Moto X?
The real challenge is when you want to root with a locked bootloader (and even that is becoming gradually easier).

But i began the process with a locked bootloader and getting to the answer/correct path was a challenge in these threads compared to other threads.

New Moto X. can I put a rom on it?

I had a Moto X that I unlocked via the China seller, and it's being replaced because it's bricked. is there a way to put roms on a locked device? or can I unlock the bootloader again for cheap? I paid roughly 40 dollars for it last time.

Is there a reason why you want a custom ROM? It's certainly your choice, and respectable but if you're looking for minor tweaks to make it look different you may just want to try the GravityBox module with the Xposed Framework. That way you can just worry about rooting your phone, and then tweaking everything else to your liking after that.

I enjoy PA pie along with halo, PA has the best pie controls in my opinion. So it seems they sent me a moto x on 4.4.2, is my only option pie root than using safestrap? Or what is the best way to go about putting a ROM on this?

Would the 4.4.2 pie root work? It says it does not disable write protection and it is a tethered root.

Right. And safestrap won't work on 4.4.2.
So no, unless you unlock the bootloader again, you won't be able to flash a custom rom or recovery unfortunately.

So I think customer recovery is out unless you get a bootloader unlocked. And without custom recovery, you wouldn't be able to do a custom ROM.
You can still root the stock ROM though! That's what the PIE method will do. Don't think that will give you custom recovery.

Also, you want TowelPieRoot. Not either individually. That will give you root, but not disabled write protection. So mostly it's only useful for certain apps to be used.

Downgrading is a dangerous thing on the X... It can easily end up in a brick, or other issues... Or a brick later.
No one who knows how this phone works ever recommends downgrading.
So no.... You are out of luck right now.
You can try the Middleman again... Or wait for a Possible exploit maybe being released, sometime.
But most advise not to upgrade either until this exploit that maybe will come out comes out. In vase 4.4.4 is incompatible with it.
It will also cost you money though.

BTW, mixing the dangerous on its own downgrading with slapmymoto and safestrap is a definite recipe for disaster.

Not the parts that matter when it comes to disabling write protection on a locked boot loader phone, and certainly not safely for the rest of the Roms.

If you can NOT unlock your bootloader, and by some miracle your phone is still on 4.4 (aka 4.4.0) or below, you can look at SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo to root and disable write protection. HOWEVER, once you upgrade you will lose write protection, and be subject to the above conditions on rooting depending on your ROM version
And no, if you are on 4.4.4 you can NOT fully downgrade to 4.4.2 or lower. If you are on 4.4.2 you can NOT fully downgrade to 4.4 (aka 4.4.0) or lower! If you try, you will likely brick your phone or set it up to brick with future OTA's.
EDIT: And if Moto's web site doesn't give out your bootloader unlock code, you MIGHT have a chance using the China Middleman (see the thread in the general section). If its available and you can purchase that way, you can then unlock your bootloader exactly as if you got the code from Moto's own web site and follow any instructions as if you got the code from moto. The only difference is where you got the code, and how much it cost.

[Q] Rooting options for Moto X Europen version Android version 4.4.4

Hello
I recently bought a Moto X (European version) and I would like to have the Xposed framework on it. To do that I need to have root access as I understand it. To gain root access I need to unlock the bootloader, or do I? I have read a couple of threads where an unlocked bootloader wasn't needed to root the phone, there was apparently some sort of exploit to forgo that. I'm wondering if that is possible with the Android 4.4.4 and European version combo?

Yes you need an unlocked bootloader to Root 4.4.4.

With 4.4.2, the vulnerability/exploit used to disable write protection on the 2013 X was patched and no longer works.
With 4.4.4, the vulnerability/exploit used to root phones with a locked bootloader has been patched.
With 4.4.4, the only way to root and disable write protection is to unlock the bootloader.

What the hell.. c'mon man it's been like 10 years... still not a method.

You may have found some threads on here that recommend Sunshine, a $25 app that you can download (link below). The developers say that it may work for some users that are on 4.4.4. Try it. It will confirm for you whether it will unlock before you pay. It successfully worked for me when I was on 4.2.2. Good luck.

That is sad. I tried to use sunshine just now on xt1058. Says I have no root (after attempting temproot).
