Just to clear up a lot of questions, and as AT&T is the only carrier i know of at the moment with the S4 Active, figure i post this up. Please keep this thread updated for S4 Active users.
As of right now, root has been achieved on the S4 Active.
i9505 ROMs (international based) work on i337 (US AT&T)/i337m (Canadian) versions, but DO NOT WORK on i9295 (S4 Active), i537 (AT&T version of Active) or i9500 (S4 Exynos Octa versions).
Cant Wait. This is my first android and all i need to do now is teather this thing.
i too just ordered this guy.... couldn't resist at $99. A welcome add to the collection, now just need a forum so we can get organized and root
I want one of these, but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger until I can get Cyanogen on it.
Sure, I could buy a regular S4 now, but with my lifestyle a certain degree of water and dust resistance is a simple necessity. All that and I'll still buy a good case for it, bulky or not.
Anyone with this phone had headphone volume issues? I've tried a few fixes and can't get the sound I used to get from my i777.

mssinny99, may be you already had this, but I received a popup about "Volume Levels Damaging Hearing" after repeatedly trying to turn up the volume. I think I hit the up key 4 times (similar to developer options). After I accepted the warning, the volume sky rocketed.
Also, looking forward to a root solution!!

i would try NOT to update for now, let devs try to crack it or bypass it first
I'm not. Perhaps that firmware would be useful to a Dev?
Sent From My Galaxy S4 Active using a Tapatalk 4
it probably would. i hope devs are working on this; if there is any possibility to flash ROMs im giving the GS4 away and getting the Active.
I know this sounds bad, but the S4 Active is the first phone I haven't felt the need to root! I disabled/uninstalled all the bloat and useless apps, I have the 5GB w/tethering plan, I can install a custom launcher and theme, really the only thing missing for me is being able to backup and restore apps - but since I can't install custom ROM's that's not an issue.

If it wasn't for the awesome monthly view calendar widget I would try another launcher. I just don't like losing it although I hate the touch wiz icons.

Samsung has released the kernel for the Active.
Does this make it much easier to root and stuff?
If so i think I'll jump on the band wagon while the deal is alive and get the Active and just wait it out.

I am in the same boat here.. Just got the S4 Active and so far the only thing I need root for is for backing up apps AND disable certain bloat, like the annoying boot sound.
For backup, have you considered Helium? It does NOT need root BUT the restore and backup can only be done while your phone is connected to a PC/MAC. It's free and works well..

Me too, I have always rooted and put ROM's on my phones, but this is the first one I don't really feel the need to do it. I kinda like all the TW features. Also, correct me if I'm wrong because I haven't used it, but doesn't Kies backup your phone and Apps?

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm in need of a new phone and the Active offers most of what I need.

Just to clarify: you don't need to connect to PC to do the backup, just after every reboot of the phone. After that it works like TB.

Return it. I can say with 100% honesty that my phone has not randomly restarted even once.
In my list of running apps is an app called Sprint DM Service. It has permissions accessing virtually everything on the phone, in or out. Does anyone know what this is? I've searched online, and can't find anything. Btw, this is a Nexus 6 through AT&T, so I kinda figured it has nothing to do with Sprint. Any info would be appreciated.

Could be......but since i got mine through at&t, I would have to assume that it would be on all models then, and put there by Google. Seems a little funny. It was running 24-7, but frozen now.......might delete fully later.

Removing SprintDM
I'm on AT&T Nexus 6 and was successful in removing ATT startup splash screen, logo, and rigntones... therefore I would like to exterminate all traces of Sprint from my NEXUS PHONE!
Anyone have success with rooting & removing this completely unnecessary bloat? (Sprint worked just fine on Nexus 5 phones without SprintDM).
What directory would I need to delete when rooted?

Freeze them first to see if there are secondary consequences or breakage. Going nuclear deleting directories you don't understand is how you end up with a firmware won't boot.
We don't yet know how far the spare carrier libs are baked into the firmware.

True, which is why I was asking if anyone else has already found this directory and deleted it successfully. From what we know, all carrier bloat was added onto a separate partition as to not affect Google OTA updates. Wondering if the same is true of Sprint's BS...

From what I've encountered, Sprint DM also appears to be necessary for updating your PRL and device config.

Lol, the initial setup app is Sprints. Good luck with that.
So root is100% necessary?? OK I found my reason to root
I am interested in rooting my Samsung S6. I have been curious about the process on Android phones for a while. I am currently experimenting with Android development and would like to learn as much about the concepts as possible. My questions are; if you root a device as mine can you later go back to their (AT&T, Samsung) factory setup? I mean like what the phone came new from AT&T? Is there a way to back this state up so I can return to it? Any suggestions or information is cool. Thanks

ODIN back to Stock is how you get back to original.
Now the bad news. The ATT S6 cannot be rooted unless it has very old firmware on it. I think it was back in the 5.0.x days.
I never rooted it so I cannot remember for sure.

That's cool; it is good to know this stuff before trying to do what is impossible. I have an S5 I could try, or I will just acquire a model that is good for rooting. I am interested in the concepts here, not so much fixing anything with my device (although that would be cool also). Could you recommend one? Why when using a program that backs up the Android (BackupTrans WhatsApp Backup) did I get a message that says "You need to root this phone"? Then it gave me steps showing how to do it. Are they just not aware of the limitations of this model (S6 AT&T)? Thanks

I do not know about the S5. The ATT S3 is still getting updates and is rootable. They have Nougat firmware they are developing.
Most likely the software did not have something right. There are several versions of the S6, but the ATT version has a locked bootloader now.

First simple check is in Settings-About Device
If it states Model Number is SAMSUNG-SM-G920A it is the ATT version.
Also, on the back of mine there is a label near the bottom. It is hard to read (faint), but it also states SM-G920A
Check those first.
With my Note 7 and its inferior replacement, the S7E, Verizon had loaded both phones up with a plethora of bloatware. On top of what was preinstalled, I'd constantly find new apps magically appearing every so often.
I subsequently learned that the spontaneous new apps were installed without my permission by DT Ignite, malware (IMO) pre-installed by Verizon. Once that was disabled, things quieted down.
My Note 8 that arrived yesterday had far fewer initial crapware games and apps, and I can't find any evidence of DT Ignite in the Apps Manager. Has Verizon finally smartened up, or do you think they'll find another way to pollute our phones?

It's a background app installed by carriers that will download and install games and apps on your phone whether you want them or not. It's very annoying to purge your phone of bloatware only to see it come back mysteriously by itself.

I had used PDP (Package Disabler Pro) to disable nearly everything it recommended on my Note 7 and the S7E that replaced it, at least until Nougat was released. After the upgrade PDP didn't work anymore, but I pretty much knew what to disable by then and DT Ignite was at the top of my list. Nothing came back after I shut that down, and the 2 or 3 security updates VZW has pushed since then didn't re-enable it.
I'm cautiously optimistic that the Note 8 will stay fairly clean ... at least until Oreo is released for the N8.
et t-mobile tu, brute?
interesting discussion chaps.
i know this is a VZW thread and i apologize for the intercept, but is tmobile likely doing the same thing?
would this ignition program find such apps on t mobile? i get the note8 friday from tmobile (my other phones are unlocked non carrier version so this is the first time ill need to look for stuff like this)

Most of the totally useless crapware cannot be disabled without a package disabler app
FWIW, the one I usually use (Package Disabler Pro) is not working on my Note FE, but, BK Disabler is.
I'd say it's well worth the couple of dollars vs dealing with unwanted bloat ware...

I avoid disabling anything to avoid issues when updates are pushed - I never disabled DT Ignite on my VZW S8 and I never had anything pushed on my phone. Also if you don't want to be tracked, you're using the wrong operating system to begin with.

Good for you, seriously, but that wasn't my experience. I'd wake up to new, unwanted games and apps on my Note 7 and S7 Edge pretty regularly. And after disabling DT Ignite, I never had a problem with any of the updates, including the Nougat release for the S7E. I had to disable DT Ignite again after that installed, but the 3 security updates since have all installed just fine.
Not sure if this is the right place but here it goes. I actually use some VZW stuff. I like the native VZW to VZW video calling. I also love the VZW premium visual voicemail. The VZW cloud is handy, but I can do without.
Anyone know how I get this stuff?
You mean on a non Verizon issued Note 8 or something?
Not bloatware, but I'm pissed ours didn't get the upgrade for the swipe down on homescreen bringing down notifications rather than a 2nd app drawer command.

Not sure if the CSR was right, but she said there is an advance calling setting on the VZW N8 that I couldn't find on my unlocked Sammy N8. I said maybe mine isn't provisioned correctly. She said she wasn't sure. I am going to call back tomorrow to speak with tech support

If you really want it, Nova Launcher can do this. I actually prefer using the fingerprint reader for this, though, and you don't need Nova Launcher for it (although I'd rather have Nova Launcher than not).
Yes action launcher does too but the Note is the only phone I usually use the default launcher with. The sensor isn't convenient to me yet.

You have the US AT&T variant which is not built off Exynos7870 but rather Exynos7885 and clocked down to Exynos7884B. As I see it development for that platform is completely dead. You might wanna switch to some other phone or look through devices with Exynos7885 sources/threads to do custom stuff for yourself.
Any idea where I can find the stock firmware for the cricket A6 SM-A600AZ? It's like this device doesn't exist. Sales must have been extremely low.
