where do you ppl live that you get coverage? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I live in Ohio and tried to go T-Mobile route (or more correctly Family Mobile route), and don't get signal anywhere! in areas I have 5 bars, I drive 2 more blocks and those 5 bars drop to 1, or 0. pretty much every place I go this is the norm, even downtown or at my university (Ohio State University).
Just wondering where you guys live and what kind of coverage you get? do you guys only use Wi-Fi, or are there some ppl out there rocking full bars LTE in their whole state ?

Id go crazy if i were you. I live in Los Angeles and i get lte about 90% of the time and 100% of the time on my 50 mile commute to work on congested freeways. Sucks that you dont get coverage in your state :/

I got good T-mobile LTE/4G coverage in Atlanta, Macon and in Houston.

I live in Chicago and get great LTE coverage 90% of the time. Since I upgraded to my Note 4 I feel like i'm getting stronger signal than I was before with my 5s since my garden APT finally has some LTE coverage as well. Sucks the your state doesn't get coverage since in my opinion TMO is leaps and bounds better than anyone else right now!

I supposed to have "exelent " coverage I'm my area here in Denver Colorado I don't even pull 1 gotdamn meg. Called tmobile 5 times regarding this issue and it STILL DOESN'T WORK

You mean those funny cigarettes? Can't stop won't stop brotha. But of course that's not the problem. Any one know what I should Do? Called them 5 times don't want to call them a 6th just for the sammmmmme ****tt.

you're probably just in one of those bad zones that t mobile has around the country; I assume you use wifi as much as possible..

I live in Upper Arlington by Riverside Hospital. It's 5 mins from the Shoe/Shot in Columbus, Ohio. Go Buckeyes! I get great T-Mobile service. I left Sprint after 14 years a year and a half ago. T-Mobile blows Sprint away. Only places I don't get T-Mobile service is Marrysville golfing but that's out in bfe. LoL. I'm very happy with T-Mobile. Maybe something is wrong with your phone.
I usually get anywhere from 10-70mbps download and 5-20mbps upload.

Yes I use WiFi at home I use my 4g at work but I can use the WiFi.. What bothers me is I'm paying for unlimited you know and it sucks to know that I can't enjoy the speeds I am paying for

Tucson AZ, 4G LTE allover town.

Live on the west side of Cincinnati and coverage all around here is great. We just got LTE in my town straight from Edge which is great. Seems to get better and stronger signal daily.
Goes all the way down to my work in Northern KY.
I was sad there was no coverage at all in Huntington WV when I was there last week, since I am out there sometimes, but that is what it is.
Def had better service with Verizon but TMO is 100% manageable.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app

Bay area, CA. I'm up north in Napa. Coverage can be spotty, but works in the most populated areas. Lose it in between cities/towns sometimes, and out in the hills/small valleys.
But when it works, it works better than verizon, lol.

I live in Baltimore, MD. I get service everywhere with the exception of at my desk, but that's because it's in the middle of a military base, so I don't fault T-Mobile for that one. Overall very happy. This is what it looks like for me at home.

I live just south of the Akron Canton area. I've got great service and just got 4G. Really doesn't matter because I use WiFi for everything.

I'm in Philly with great coverage. Always 4 or 5 bars and LTE.

signal is pretty good in the Knoxville area...have LTE most of the time.

LTE just hit springfield ohio 4G every place else

STL
Decent coverage here in the STL area, although it is horribly spotty. My office in the near west county area is blistering. Full bars indoors, and just got a 43ms ping with 15 down and about 18 up. Love fast, symmetrical speeds.
However, at home on the IL side of the river in the burbs, it is terrible. I had to install a Wilson antenna on the roof, an amp in the attic, and then 2 indoor antennas to make LTE useful.
I liked the comment earlier about when it works, it works great. That is so true. I left VZW after years, and I have to say I am still fairly happy with T-Mo, but I do miss the consistent reliability of VZWs footprint.

Tampa Bay here great coverage all around here

I managed to get a couple speedtests in before the network disappeared. These were taken near Pearland, which is just south of Houston, Tx with a N4.

Neither can I. The LTE network isn't commercially live and T-Mo simply doesn't want us on it. I have no other explanation. They've had the security system implemented for a while, and if your device isn't provisioned for internal testing, you shouldn't be on. There is too much information we can gather from it, the amount of bandwidth used, frequency, and what they care mostly is the speeds. The speeds are their selling point, money makers, and what we're seeing when we connect is nowhere near what T-Mobile would like to have talked about.
To prove my point, remember the GigaOm, TmoNews story that popped up about 10 days ago covering my speedtests from Astoria, NYC, with speeds up to about 18mbps?
http://gigaom.com/2013/03/15/t-mobiles-lte-network-spotted-hiding-in-the-urban-jungles-of-nyc/
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/03/t-mobile-2/
Well, the next day T-Mobile called in a Press Briefing with CNET, LaptopMag, Verge and Engadget writers and setup an internal 2x10Mhz LTE cell site in NYC to showcase their speeds that were 62mbps.. http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57574614-85/t-mobile-equips-galaxy-note-2-with-fast-4g-lte-powers/ They've embargoed the story until monday morning at 9AM when all four blitzed the media. Bravo! :good:
Bottom line, they extremely care about their image which has been hurting, as their CEO has been announcing the best network since sliced bread. My speed tests weren't very hot and they had to prove their point.

i've noticed that some people have H+ what does it mean? mine always says H and average speed is around 12mbps which i find pretty fast for my needs although i wish i had better ping :laugh::laugh:
and btw i mostly spend my worthless life in Manhattan

I have friends up in Grafton, WI i visit and I've noticed they expanded the 4g a LOT but now it appears grafton is just one big 2g dead zone. (Literally! on https://maps.eng.t-mobile.com/pcc-retail-default.php ) Just odd that they would take away a LOT of 2g coverage that's always been there!

HSPA+ implemented on TMOUS as HSPA-42mbit. People call it HSPA-DC(Dual Channel)as well. Normally means faster speeds although the best I've seen on H+ is 14mbit.
This is in San Francisco I did have my LTE on but as you can see it's not getting LTE it's on hspa your 1900mhz band has probably been upgraded that's all, if you get LTE you should be seeing higher speeds

SJ is going to be a launch market in three days so it makes sense SF has it too.
From what I've been reading over on HowardForums, yeah when they install the 1900mhz HSPA gear it's probably LTE ready as well. From what my 3GS is showing me, I have 1900mhz HSPA here in LA but I doubt it's getting LTE for a long time...I remember it took almost a year until I got H+.

Is anyone here actually HAPPY with T-Mobile?

Specifically the chicagoland area... Right now I have an at&t traditional plan with unlimited data. I'm CONSTANTLY dropping calls (did the same on my iPhone too) and once I hit 5gb of data, I get throttled to the point of uselessness. Yes, I am a data hog, I work overnights and there is a lot of down time, so Netflix is my friend.
So T-Mobile's truly unlimited data and far cheaper month rates are appealing. My wife and I would be saving 80 bucks a month going to T-Mobile. I just want to see if anyone here can share some good stories about T-Mobile before I make the switch.
Thank you

Yes, I am pleased with the $30 5GB plan. Good coverage in the Southwest burbs.

I'm happy with them as far as phone calls and data usage goes. I've only ever had dropped calls on my first ever day on T-Mobile, and it hasn't happened since, even in areas with a weak signal. Data is spotty for me in certain areas. If I'm in the city, it's strong, perfect, no complaints. In suburbs, I can sometimes get a 3G connection, other times I get no signal at all.
90% of the time I am in the city, or at home and have a perfect HSPA+ signal, so I'm happy with the amount I pay. Verizon was definitely a lot better for me since I had perfect service no matter where I was, or where I went but I couldn't justify the cost of the new crappy "Share everything plans" which rob you.
Since you watch a lot of netflix, be sure to get the $50 plan, and add the extra $20 for "unlimited nationwide 4G". The normal $50 version comes with 500MB of LTE/HSPA+ speeds, then they throttle you at 2G speeds. I currently use the $60 plan which gives you 2.5GB of 4G speed data. I never use more than 1-2 monthly.
I live just north of the wi border and whenever I go anywhere near Chicago my reception is awesome, full bars of h+. Also ive heard LTE is live there. Pretty much I'm saying youll be pretty happy with tmo I think. Definitely cheaper than at&t and I've personally never had dropped calls or anything, the only time tmo sucks is if you go way out to the boonies, you'll pretty much get no data.

I work downtown and live not far north. TMobile is the fastest i've used. verizon and att are just so mobbed. my buddy on verizon rarely breaks 6 mbps download and his upload is around .1 mbps haha.
No I cry everytime I make a phone call
T-Mobile has no contract. Can't hurt to try them anyway and they have a 30 day guarantee. You can also try their prepaid for a month if you don't want to go through the hassle.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've NEVER, EVER, EVER had a dropped call in all the years of using T-Mobile.
I'd give T-Mo a 9/10. I can't think of a complaint or ill feeling I've had in the 6 years I've been with them (more if you count the Voicestream days). I docked them a point for the handful of spotty areas in LA.
I paid $140/month 10gb limit and barely could hit 4g LTE at home forcing me to run 3g on Verizon getting speeds around 2-3mb.
Here's why I love T-Mobile...

i opened this thread to argue that tmobile is great because i live in chicago. but then i saw your post was about chicago...
i have dropped a few calls and identified a few buildings where i cannot get service on AWS band, but I can usually overcome it by forcing 1900mhz in the network menu.
south of I-80, it sucks, GPRS or EDGE for 100 miles and then UMTS/HSPA21
I swear they used to have ads up at the jackson red line that said t-mobile, the only provider who works in the subway. well it doesnt work for **** in either subway- no provider does.
they also led me to believe that if i went postpaid i would get ATT roaming, and I was stupid and didnt do my homework. no roaming anywhere in chicagoland period.
that said, I'm very happy with what I get for $60/mo.
I had an ATT iphone4 for 2 years and it was like I traveled back in time 10 years. I got to the point that I didnt ever even try to use data in the loop. I wasnt mad about it, it was a fact of life that I cant have an ATT smartphone because I'm in the city.
edit: any certain place you will be using it? if there is no crowdsourced data there i can test for you before you sign. im all over town all the time
I think it's just your area. I love T-Mobile, I don't think I'd go to any other carrier, unless T-Mobile drastically changed in the future for the worse. Only bad thing is that I get no signal at all at a few of my friends houses. Seriously none at all, only near windows. But once I leave the house, it's perfectly fine. Even in their neighbors houses, I get signal....
Love T-Mobile.. The only way you could have a problem with them is not looking at their coverage area and signing up blindly.. They aren't Verizon so if you signed up with T-Mobile and expect a data connection or a signal in general in east-bumble-funk Nebraska... Yeah, I don't feel sorry for you..
T-Mobile is exactly as advertised.. Their coverage area is dead on as the map shows.. Their speeds are incredible and I've done 4hr voice calls without drops.. Even their G/Edge service is `workable' for basic web browsing.
Zero complaints..

If you're in any big cities. T-Mobile is awesome. I visited Chicago and had full bars all around downtown and around the city. If you ever have bad reception then you can use any of the T-Mobile branded phones that have T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling which is awesome. Nexus 4 does not have it yet unfortunately, but all the others do like the s4.

I'd be using it in the southwest suburbs like the Orland Park area and then the west suburbs like the Woodridge area. I very rarely go downtown and am only in the Mt. Greenwood area of Chicago when in the city at all.
To the rest, thank you very much for your responses. I had T-Mobile a about 11 years ago for a bit, but never any data plan or anything like that, so I didn't know. I sole be doing this soon here, so we'll see.
Oh, one more thing. Any issues with T-Mobile's sims and Google wallet? I use Google wallet every day and I don't want to have issues with that.

Way out in the boonies like the entire state of Michigan. Maybe that will change now that they have MetroPCS's spectrum as they had a large presence in the state but I doubt it.
Coming from Sprint, data is night and day difference...literally. GPS locks on instantly. The no contract was big for me. But I will say I do notice some quirks with the service, but I can live with it. It might be since I have LTE enabled on my phone, but when I make a phone call, sometimes it takes like 5 seconds to start ringing. I'm guessing because it has to change from LTE to 3G to make the call? That and I've found a few dead spots around town. That only really effects me when streaming pandora sometimes. But like someone else said, if I can get this service 90% of the time then I'm happy. I get 4G at work and 4G at my house.

No Service/No Signal/No Data? Look here [T-Mobile USA Only]

Tired to No signal or edge or even no data?
A Signal Booster/Repeater is your answer!!!
Here's a Video of my signal booster : Uploading In Progress
If you are on T-Mobile Postpaid Look below
So you are postpaid, If you call in t-mobile and ask if you quality for a signal booster as you do not have good service in home but you do outside.
Certain requirements though to get one you need to live in a single family home and not in a apartment complex the reason is because E911 wont locate you and they cannot dispatch police right away* See ALL requirements here http://support.t-mobile.com/community/coverage/signal-booster
They also require you to be a valued customer (having more than 1 postpaid line) in my case i had 5
If you are successful like I did you will get one for free and I also got it 1 day overnight express

If you are on T-Mobile Prepaid or not meeting the requirements for a Cel-FI RS2 on Postpaid below this text
Calling in won't do anything because you're prepaid and not postpaid and you have no obligations with them for example EIP
Sorry to say, you aren't getting this one for free you can buy a Cel-FI Rs2 like postpaid from T-Mobile or Nextivity
or go a cheaper route and buy a Cel-fi RS1 on eBay they sell for about 130 - 150 bucks i got mine for 119 bucks
Theres no real difference with the RS1 and RS2 its just the RS2 has a bit higher signal output than the RS1 Coverage wise compared. i only saw 1 room difference ( RS2 Full signal everywhere, RS1 All but 1 room no signal )
The RS2 Can boost AWS 1700/2100 and PCS 1900 (PCS 1900 Available only in certain markets)
RS1 Can only boost AWS 1700/2100 (most if not all markets have this)
Just eBay search T-Mobile signal booster and you'll find it

I can pickup 1 bar at the back of my house on the coverage map it says "Good" yours was probably satisfactory.
they also added a new cell site in my area 1 week after i got the booster so its okay for the parts where i had 1 bar so i reverse positioned it

You got it? and it doesn't have to be a window just somewhere that has signal keep in mind the RS2 has 4 Antennas inside which is better than the Nexus 5 and can pickup way better signal

awesome. i get good coverage at my "cube" at work so I will leave it there. Just need to find a place to put the other device. preferably 1 story down since i get no coverage whatsoever down there.

Don't space them too far apart they work on the same frequency as 5Ghz WiFI
Just ordered one for $7.75 shipping

Awesome thread. These are hard to get, and the information for them is not readily available on the internet, at least from .y searches.

Aren't they all prepaid now? Or are you guys on old contracts still?

Sheesh....definitely would want to qualify or find one using the Ebay route the OP mentioned. Thanks for bringing it to the community's attention!

this thread has nothing to do with flashing or w/e to gain signal back this is for people who have little to no signal at all with T-Mobile its a tower/hardware issue not software related
I have one on the way to my house....for the cost of shipping. Thanks OP.
Before going through the hassle, be aware this won't improve LTE signal at all...only HSPA+.

Just called T-Mobile, they are shipping the booster out and I should have it tomorrow, expedited shipping! If you're postpaid, it could not be simpler to get one of these from T-Mobile, just give them a call. Thank you OP for bringing this to our attention.

There is a big difference between the two.
The RS1 uses AWS 1700/2100 Mhz only.
The RS2 uses both 1900 Mhz and AWS 1700/2100 Mhz.
I tried this but they ended up running me through the standard trouble shooting and at the end told me that there is maintenance at the towers and to see if it clears up in 48 hours.
But that was with the live chat. I'll try again in 2 days anyways but actually call them.

Both will co-exist.
1900Mhz is later which only certain "modernized markets" have
Everyone has AWS 1700/2100Mhz

Project FI SIM roam to VZW/ATT/US Cellular when not in Sprint or T-Mobile coverge?

Has anyone noticed their FI SIM roam when off of sprint and t-mobile coverage?
I have a Nexus 6, 6p and 5x. When my FI SIM is in the 6P and N6 and I'm in sprint mode/CDMA mode and there is no sprint coverage I have noticed that talk/text and 3g data work just fine on both the VZW and the US Cellular networks.
Also when in T-Mobile mode/ GSM mode and there is no T-Mobile coverage, both talk/text and LTE/HSPA/Edge data work just fine on AT&T. Also if on AT&T I actually have mobile data while on a phone call!!!??
But on my 5x I have no roaming at all doesn't matter what I do. It will not work at all on any network except Sprint and T-mobile.
All 3 of the phones have been tried on various ROMS and kernels and that don't seem to make a difference. Currently on Chroma/Franco on all 3.
I use FI Switch by @dwithereIl and Signal Check PRO to switch between CDMA and GSM mode and to know what provider I am currently on.
What has been you experience?

3g and HSPA on VZW, US Cellular and AT&T are all quite bad. less then 1 meg generally. But usable. AT&T LTE however seems to be comparable to actual AT&T speeds. Only did one speed test on AT&T LTE and it was Band 4 and was about 10meg which was exactly what my actual AT&T phone was.

Just now on HSPA. Real AT&T phone gets 8meg. FI, not so much lol
Damn, well at least it would be good in emergencies, in places with not good service. So do you usually roam on h+ on at&t, or LTE often?
Can you do a speed test on verizon roaming?

Yeah exactly! Something cool about paying 20$ +data and tax and having a single Sim that works with the 5 major providers in the USA. Talk and text works perfectly. Data works, just slow.

Sorry, didn't read the rest of your question.. It doesn't seem to go to AT&T very well at all if there is either T-Mobile or Sprint coverage. But when there is neither of those it goes to AT&T LTE and HSPA no problems. Here is a speed test on VZW 3g... Now it says alltel, but that's actually VZW.. Used to be alltel up here in MI.
I have roamed with my Nexus 6 on GSM/ CDMA carriers.
-I have had no speed issues roaming on Verizon.
-On AT&T it said 3G however it was more like HSPA+

Oh absolutely. Project Fi and their SIM, and technology is amazing. On their own Sprint and T-Mobile service can be a bit dodgy. Combining the two has given me excellent service. I have only not had service in one area in the middle of nowhere. I was a dubious early early adopter. Two months later I dropped Verizon and went full time with Fi.

I'm pursuing a degree in IT at the moment!
Anyways, Right Wifi calling and texting is a godsend. I used to be a data hog but I have learned to download and pre-cache stuff and connect to Wifi more religiously. Sometimes my bills are as low as 25$

Hey, best of luck to you!! Its an excellent industry to be in!! Growing like leaps and bounds!!
Can't beat that compared to the $60 - $80 you'd be giving to VZW
So just to be clear... when this roaming happens, is there any additional charge or is it billed at the same rate?

Contemplating ditching verizon for t-mobile

Can you guys tell me the pros of moving to t-mobile vs sticking with verizon? My main motivation is the fact that Verizon keeps selling locked bootloader phones so I can't ever mod them. Seriously frustrating. Is it true that all of t-mobiles phones are unlockable or already come unlocked? Also what are the average LTE speeds you guys see when doing speed tests on the tmobile network?
Thanks.

I have been on tmobile for years. The Samsung galaxy series has been easy to root and mod. If you live in a rural are the coverage can be spotty. They do have tbe wifi calling though as well so that is an added plus. Speeds work fine for me normal use.

Any chance you could run a speedtest.net app and tell me the results? I know it wont be the same in all areas but it's nice to see what they are capable of.

I can give it a go tomorrow when I am out and about.
I switched to T-Mobile last year I used to have Verizon and the speed and service was great but they didn't offer unlimited data and that is what I wanted so I switched but in my area they need more antennas because it gets to congested at times to the point that data isn't working and my average speed is 15 mb

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile myself, and am totally glad I did.
Pros:
- cheaper
- offers an unlimited data plan, free international 3G data and texting (invaluable service when you travel; I've taken advantage of this too many times), many music/video streaming services don't count against your data bucket (if you don't have unlimited)
- no contracts
- the Jump/upgrade program is pretty good if you switch phones regularly
- phones can be unlocked at anytime, as long as you have paid off your phone
Cons
- I travel quite a bit, and have found that their coverage isn't consistent in rural areas (urban cities are mostly fine though)
- S6 still hasn't received the Marshmallow update (though with Verizon updates took just as long), so software updates are slow
- speeds are not as fast as Verizon, I usually average 10% slower than when I was on Verizon (personally it doesn't feel significantly slower to be annoying)
Switched couple months ago and couldn't be happier. For what I was paying verizon for a locked phone for myself I get two unlocked phones for myself and the little lady with tmobile. with binge on and free streaming music I barely have any other data use 2.1gig last month. my average for the music alone is 8gig and that doesn't count anymore . And i get better signal at home ! Verizon unusable in my house tmobile is better plus can use wifi calling so now thinking can finally drop landline.
Switch as quickly as you can and don't look back

I live in a brick and stucko house. No one gets great service in the house regardless of provider.
T-Mobile's service is much better with a band 12 phone, like the S6. I was amazed by the significant reception improvement over my S4 (non-band 12). Even T-Mobile's old band 4 LTE signal is much better on the S6. I work in the center of an office building (1950's building with brick, stucko, and asbestos ) and I get amazing LTE reception with my S6, whereas my S4 got no reception.
Stick with Verizon if you travel a lot or are in rural areas. I live near Los Angeles, so reception is not a problem.

T-Mobile's connection and speeds aren't always reliable. I think Verizon is way better and you should stick with them if you had the money because I know I would. I'm going to go stock anyways because I want MM (no roms for that on S6 T-mo yet) and Samsung pay. Plus, some roms have apps that work a little differently (not a deal breaker, but annoying for me) and I cannot pickup calls sometimes (deal breaker, very frustrating).
I absolutely love tmobile. I like what the company is doing and most importantly there customer service. At one point a better service plan came out that was cheaper but still all of the same features... and they had zero issues switching it over. What company does that? Most will say its only avaliable to new customers.. not tmobile. Yes service can be limited in some area but they are still in the middle of switching off old 2g and replacing it with LTE. Major improvements in the past 6months. That all said no other carrier can match tmobile speeds at my home or work.

If you travel a ton... stick with Verizon or wait another year.
I should add the new s7 has locked bootloader on tmobile so mods are limited... Aka no root yet.
