Does it matter what carrier I buy? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to pick one of these up off of Craigslist but does it have to be a T-Mobile Variant for me to enjoy 4G LTE and all that good stuff?
Does it matter? Anything to keep in mind?
With my Note 3 I just bought a T-Mobile version and I had the dude meet me at a T-Mobile store to verify the ESSN.

define "good stuff"..every carrier has 4glte now

Here is a thread talking about this: http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4/438703-buy-note-4-t-mobile-use-t.html

Yes, keep in mind that if the Tmobile phone is not sim UNLOCKED
it will only work on the Tmobile network.
Also unless your carrier is Tmobile you will NOT have the option
of wifi calling.
Good luck!

Part of that statement is true. It's not sim unlocked but that fix is only $30. I have the t-mobile on AT&T.

[Q] T-MO (N900T) or Intl. (N9005) ? for use on AT&T

I understand that the T-Mo version has its many advantages of having its unlocked bootloader, DEV support, SIM unlock, etc...
Price point aside, are there any major advantages/disadvantages between purchasing the T-Mo(N900T) or the Intl version (N9005)?
Every stat comparison seems to be similar, ROM support and all the freq bands are there.
Looking for some definitive answers from the community before spending big bucks on a new unit.

On my way to the T-MO store then. :fingers-crossed:
Just so I get this straight,
1. Purchase the N900T.
2. Purchase a $10 or $20 SIM card. (then insert it and use the phone) Required?
3. Bring it home and use the service on CellUnlocker.net
4. Wait for the unlock codes then ENJOY! (Change APN settings)
Optional;
Follow the rooting/recovery guides in the T-Mo thread.

Lol no worries. Just get the T-mobile version and you'll be just fine. I unlocked mine for cellunlocker.net ( well technically i havent unlocked it yet as i am waiting for my note 3 to be delivered but i got the unlock code ready to go).
I walked into a T-Mobile store day after they released the phone. Bought it full retail without purchasing a plan or a sim. Went home and unlocked it using cellunlocker. Now I am using it on AT&T with LTE. Also rooted and a custom rom is installed.

Thanks for the update on that. You did not have to put a T-Mo SIM first? I thought that was required for the region unlock issue?
How are the actual LTE speeds? Others have mentioned a drop in speeds due to AT&T not giving top priority to the T-Mo IMEI.

+1 on this question. How is the signal strength as well compared to a true AT&T phone in the same area?
Galaxy Note 3 Active
I was in the T-Mo store today looking at the Note 3. Ready and willing to go ahead and pull the trigger, then the rep says they are all out of the white one. They will have more in by the end of the week. Then mentions, they do have some at another store about 5 miles away though. He looks at me looking all disappointed and says, have you heard the rumor about the N3 active? No, I said. He says, if you can wait to get a new phone you might want to read up as it looks like Samsung is going to be going ahead with the release very soon.

It's because their stock of N900T's have been blacklisted by US carriers. Meaning they were obtained from the gray market. T-Mobile and AT&T have a database of IMEI's that are blocked from their network.
N900T vs N900A
I was reading the thread and was wondering why folks would prefer to buy the N900T vs N900A (especially when they are planning to use if for AT&T and will be required to unlock immediately)? Is there hardware/software advantages for the N900T over the N900A?
I'll add my 2 cents on this. I had originally purchased the T-Mobile variant (N900T) of the Note 3. I loaded up a custom rom and it was perfect. Shortly after that, I noticed my LTE signal (not HSPA) would be very low (-110dbm) in areas where my AT&T branded phones would sit on -94dbm. I flashed back to stock and noticed the same thing. Overall, LTE reception on band 17 on the N900T was very poor. Its probably because the N900T isn't optimized to use Band 17. Using the device with T-Mobile service, I had no LTE issues.
Now using the N900A for AT&T and get great LTE reception.
A buddy of mine has also noticed the TMO Note3 gets a lower reception when compared to my ATT note3. We are both on ATT as well.

[Q] Use in Europe

Hi all. If I purchase one of Moto X Sprint, ATT, Verizon
version, can I use it on our Europe network regarding
SIM lock?
Sorry I'm rookie about Moto X, I use so far other Moto Droid2 and Droid4 only.
Att you have to Sim unlock but its pretty easy to find some place online to do it for $10-15
The verizon and t mobile ones come unlocked.
Sprint and us cellular ones I think you have to be a customer to unlock so not easy to do.
You could also get some of the pre unlocked Latin ones.

Surely you just check the bands on the network your trying to use it on. Look up your networks bands.
I checked before I bought, 2100 is supported by the phone and I'm using 2100 without issue.

Hi there, I'm posting here because it's nearly the same question but I'd like to be as sure as possible
I'm looking for this device, 'cause I really like it! The problem is that I live in Italy, and, as everyone, I want to be sure it will work here!
Reading other topics, I've seen that it all depend on the band it's used in my country.
As you che see here (http ://allworldcellphones.com/gsm-frequencies-list. htm), Italy use the GSM 900/1800 frequancies and it should be fine for this phone (or am I wrong?).
Now, if so, what does it actually means? If the frequencies match, does it means that I'll be able to call, send sms, use 2G/3G/4G or there are more parameters I need to check?
And second question: I really like the Moto Make idea! Is there any way to personalize my device and get it shipped to me? Because, if I'm not wrong, Motorola only ships to USA..
Thanks for reading (and, possibly, helping) and sorry for horror typo!

Sprint doesn't have 900 3G band used in Europe, only ATT has band 7 4G, all other models don't get 4G in Europe, only 3G. Check, not sure if I am right here. My GS4 has all 3G and 4G bands for USA T-Mobile and Europe

GSM 900/1800 that's for 2G. All MotoX support that. Then you have to match 3G, and then 4G bands.
Looks like ATT is the best model for Europe but its also SIM and bootloader locked! Next in line is T-Mobile, followed by Verizon, both have same 2G and 3G bands, no 4G for Europe, SIM unlocked, but Verizon has bootloader locked

First of all, thanks for answering
Then, don't you think that the developer edition (GSM) could be a good option? For what I heard, with that I should be only missing the 4G network, wich would be unavaible anyway, wichever brand I choose..
Or am I wrong?
The other plus il that I wouldn't lose the warranty in case of modding..!

It's my understanding that an unlocked moto-x will work on either CDMA or GSM networks depending on the sim that is put in the phone. There is apparently no hardware difference in the various phones other than 16gb or 32gb. The differences are in the preloading and locking of carrier stuff...and the warranty for developer edition not being voided by unlocking it.

All verizon LTE phones are sim un-locked now (FCC requires this as part of the licensing deal for the 700MHz spectrum). The trick is to find a local carrier that matches the phones radio bands, or to buy a phone from a carrier whos radio bands match your perferred local carriers as closely as possible. The Wikipedia page lists the variants of the Moto X and their radios.

I just returned from a week in Europe with my Verizon Moto X (non-DE). When I landed in Italy, it took about 10 minutes before the phone picked up a local carrier and then everything worked great. In Italy I was roaming on Vodafone, and in Switzerland I was roaming on Swisscom. Data worked great in both places. I didn't try using a local SIM card, but I'm sure there are plenty that would work.

Verizon Note 9 on AT&T

If I get a Verizon note 9 can I just pop an Att sim into it and it will work. I know there may be differences between voice and data but Basically is the Verizon NOTE9 GSM unlocked like past Galaxy phones were?
I read a Verizon forum where the Verizon rep said that the note 9 is GSM unlocked but she said AFTER it has been activated on Verizon.
To make matters more confusing she linked to a Verizon page that basically said all Verizon's post pay phones are GSM 4G unlocked (nothing about activation first).
Anyone can help me here? Thinking of getting a cheap one of eBay to use mainly overseas and ATT or wherever else.
Yes. The Verizon models are unlocked. And it's the same exact hardware as the ATT version. My recommendation is to flash either the U1 or the ATT firmware though. Otherwise you'll get the Verizon boot animation and Verizon bloatware.
The ATT firmware will allow you to use WiFi calling and VOLTE.
The unlocked U1 firmware will be clean and have no carrier bloat.

I see now that on ebay that some say verizon unlocked and some say verizon locked and some of the verizons up for sale dont specify (but in the item detail it says locked or contract)... This makes things more confusing.
I have always bought verizon phones for the unlocked gsm. I did read that verizon was going to stop having them unlocked....this is my main fear.
So what you're saying, is that the verizon note 9 is 100% gsm unlocked? sorry to ask again.

Verizon started that with the Pixel 3, after the Note 9. The Note 9's from Verizon are unlocked. Even with the Pixel 3, once it was activated with a Verizon SIM, it was then automatically carrier unlocked. So if you buy a used VZW Note 9 from eBay, its already been activated on Verizon, so no worries.
Just be careful buying off eBay. If its still under contract and the seller stops making payments, it will be blacklisted.

They buy on Verizon because Verizon offers better deals. Then they want to use the devices on other networks. But since Note only has A firmware, not B, it's an annoying process for those who haven't flashed before.
AS to your second question: ATT doesn't allow Wi-Fi Calling nor voice over LTE on unlocked devices. So many ending putting up with their bloat in order to get those features.

It used to be easier. Verizon would often offer buy one get one free on Samsung and LG devices. You had to sign up for new service and put the phones on a payment plan. But the second phone uses to actually be free, not just bill credits. And you could pay off the first one and cancel your service.
I one time bought four Galaxy S7s when they were brand new, started four lines of service with Verizon, then paid off the phones and cancelled the service. Then I sold all four phones and netted about a thousand dollar profit off the deal.
Did the same thing with the LG G4 with Verizon when they offered $600 prepaid gift cards for each phone you bought.
Now Verizon, like all other carriers, lock you in with bill credits.
As they say, all good things must come to an end.

Verizon note 9 on AT&T
I'm using an unlocked Verizon note 9 512gb 8gb ram on AT&T and amazingly everything works. Wifi calling, video calling, volte. Even went to UbreakIfix and they installed Android 10 onto the phone. When I put the Sim card into the phone it loaded all the AT&T software on the phone and I was good. The great thing about Verizon unlocked phones are that they have the full CDMA and GSM capabilities so you can use them on any carrier. It wasn't a hassle at all to do.

Unlocked Note 9 SM-N960U1 Doesn't work on any network

I purchased an unlocked Note 9 and all the networks tell me it won't work on any of theirs. AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Net10 all say no. I put my AT&T sim in and it works with low signal. Why would it not work? How do I figure out where this phone originated? I suspect Sprint because any phone from Sprint only works on Sprint.

Where did you buy it?
Have you Googled the model number?

I purchased an unlocked Note 9 and all the networks tell me it won't work on any of theirs. AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Net10 all say no. I put my AT&T sim in and it works with low signal. Why would it not work? How do I figure out where this phone originated? I suspect Sprint because any phone from Sprint only works on Sprint.

Go to this site and run the IMEI. It will tell you if it's actually a U1 model or if it's a carrier model.

Whichever it is, you can just flash the ATT firmware, and it will work perfect on ATT. All the N960U and U1s are identical. Just different firmware.

Sprint, that's why I'm having issues with it. I purchased via Amazon. I managed to get it working on Net10 wireless CDMA, so it'll work. Had to activate with my S8+ though. Thanks for the link, that helped!

Well, if you want it to work on ATT, just flash the ATT firmware. Not sure why it won't work with the U1 firmware though.

Does it need root? And it has the SM-N960U1UEU1ARJ5 Baseband Version? Thanks in advanced!

Well you CAN'T root it, but no. You don't need root to flash official firmware with ODIN.

So if you got it with flash for sprint then maybe you need flash what was originally on this model?
I have the very same model and I just put in my LTE Verizon SIM and it worked right away.
This model is a boot locked, carrier unlocked, world band snapdragon version, that was never originally touched by any carrier.
I.E. No carrier bloat ware. SM-N960U1

I flashed AT&T but cannot get wifi calling. I ordered an AT&T one through Samsung last night. I'll return this one when I get it. The back of this phone says it's an N960U.
I forgot how crappy carriers are. AT&T unlocked my iPhone but no longer recognizes it. So, I can't get wifi calling to work before switching the sim.
Thanks a bunch to everyone for their input and workarounds! Have been out of the loop for a while.

Oh, my bad, yeah the "U" models do say you might lose Wifi calling. Good it worked out for you!
I would be disappointed if I needed Wifi calling, I use the cell line 24/7 here in the US everywhere I go.
I feel like Wifi calling is just giving my carrier a break.

There's actually a way to get WiFi calling on it working again. Look through the carrier switching threads in the Note 8 forums.
It's why I hate ATT and love T-Mobile. Everything works out of the box on T-Mo.

Well to be fair there will be places where signal will be weak or non and then you will be the one loosing.
They don't look at break is just way for the customers to get better signal every where they go or inside whatever tipe of building...

I also purchased an unlocked Note 9 on ebay. In "about phone", the model number is listed as SM-N960U1. On the back of the phone, it's SM-N960U.
The sites that tell you the model with the IMEI number are right, it's a Sprint phone. Samsung customer support said the same thing. However, the Sprint phone and the US unlocked phone share the same FCC ID.
Does that mean, they are the same radio hardware? Is it just the firmware that makes the difference in band capability? If you flashed the US unlocked version of baseband, would it be identical to the US unlocked version? I just want to make double sure!
