[Q] Sprint Version SIM Unlocked?

I just got off of the phone with a Sprint support rep in the International services department, and according to her the SIM slot in the Sprint version of the Moto X is unlocked from the factory.
Can anyone verify that this is true?

That's the point, so Americans can use Sprint in the US, but when we travel just pop in an international sim.

I contacted Sprint support, they said before using it in other networks (gsm/umts) you must activate international service (which unlocks gsm). mine was not activated and here in Russia I'm stuck - phone sees our carriers but can't register. and sprint support can't help me as the phone isn't online on sprint or smth like that. that's such a pain in the ass 'cause I've had a Sprint Photon 4G before and it worked without any "making love"

Yes, "INVALID CARD - NO SERVICE"

Moral of the story is to not buy a Sprint Moto X for anything other then Sprint. Do your research and buy a proper GSM version.

Based on the many posts of people asking for how to SIM Unlock the Sprint Moto X, I'd say its not true.

Interesting. This is the first i've heard of that. There were other reports/posts that if your phone has active sprint service/account, you can call sprint and get the sim unlock code. Nothing was said about needing to just add international service to the account for the phone to be unlocked.
In any case, the moral of the story seems to be what Steve-x posted... If you are NOT a Sprint Customer, don't buy a Sprint X for international use due to all the posts of troubles and what seems to be impossibilities getting them SIM Unlocked (you can't just pop a non-sprint sim in "out of the box", Sprint will only unlock if your their customer, it seems no online services have the unlock codes for sprint moto X, etc).

No difference, same model. I'm using t-mobile motomaker on at&t with LTE just fine. Just don't let them change the IMEI on their system if you get a new sim card. Tell them to leave whatever was on there, or you'll get a plan without LTE. This applies to dev edition as well.

There are many discussions and many answers to this question. The answer I saw the most was to get a T-Mobile version for use on T-Mobile. The reason is the T-Mobile version supports a particular band for HPSA+ that other versions don't support. If your not in an LTE area, you will fall back to EDGE if your phone does not support the HSPA band needed. I can't confirm, only passing on what I read. I bought the T-Mobile version.
It appears as if you intend to use it on AT&T so it might make no difference. Why can't you use Motomaker on AT&T? Have they discontinued it?

Thanks. Understood that your not confirming but reporting what you've observed. The reason why I would choose T-Mobile and use on AT&T is simply because I want the freedom and flexibility to move between different GSM carriers and their MVNOs just like I am able to do on my Nexus 4.
If the T-Mobile version works on a particular HSPA+ band that the Dev Ed does not, yet has all the other bands that the Dev Ed has, then that would make the T-Mobile phones a better and more flexible phone imo. People who need to root or unlock would feel differently since they have different priorities.
I really want to be able to use T-Mobile since they have the best monthly pricing (especially a family of four) and I love how they have shaken up the market, but T-Mobile indoor building penetration is so poor at my current residence that I really need to go with Straight Talk or Net10 with an AT&T sim, yet if I move or the coverage improves I would switch to T-Mobile.
Does T-Mobile have to giver you a code to get your phone to work on AT&T and its MVNO's?

Does the t-mobile Moto X allow you to tether on AT&T without restriction?

I'm planning on ordering up a MotoX here shortly and have been wondering about the DE vs Tmo question too. After a LOT of google searches it seems they are the same phone with the Tmo version supporting extra bands. According to this article there is NO carrier branding or bloatware on the the Tmo version. The article also states that the Tmo Moto X comes sim unlocked with an unlockable bootloader via Motorola's unlock program. Given this, I cant understand why anyone would order the DE and not take advantage of the Motomaker customization.

There is NO difference at all. Same bands, same internals, same everything. The DE is more expensive because it's the 32GB model. The tmo one IS sim unlocked (some people don't believe that), and has an unlockable bootloader. Doesn't have a carrier logo stamped on the back either.

As for T-Mobile USA vs Dev edition.. From what I know, they support the same bands and both are SIM Unlocked. While both allow you to unlock their boot loader, doing so on the T-Mobile USA device will void its warranty where as unlocking the boot loader on the Dev Edition does not. That is why some would order the Dev Edition rather than a 32gig T-Mobile version.
As for T-Mobile vs ATT versions...

later in that discussion, someone else says... "the T-mobile and Dev variants have the same LTE bands (B17/B4/B2), so they'll be equal. On AT&T (in the US), they'll both do just as well as the AT&T variant. Bands 5 and 7 aren't used by these operators in the US." So not having LTE Band 5 & 7 on the T-Mobile US X wont be a factor unless you are traveling to a non-USA country that uses Band 5 or 7 for LTE.
The T-Mobile can unlock the boot loader, where as the ATT variant can't.

I have almost the same question. I found an article to root the moto G and the moto X (http://www.elandroidelibre.com/2013...buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer) (sorry it's in spanish)...bla bla bla I found the same that I found here but when I read the comments someone logged as "el mostro cortes" said that he flashed the developer edition's GSM factory image to his motoX. That make me think if I can do the same.
I found the radio specs of my carrier here in Colombia:
TIGO
GSM: 1900MHz

After that I look the motoX DEV-E GSM radio specs and find:
Networks:

3G UMTS bands:

With this info, can some help me and tell me if can i flash the motoX DEV-E GSM to my phone?

It can make your head spin, but from the thread it appears T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are the same, but AT&T X has them beat with LTE Bands 5 & 7, but that's moot in US since 5 & 7 are used outside US.

I should add, from what I've gleaned from what people are reporting in this thread, is that the
1) T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X, have an HSPA+ band that the AT&T X does not.
2) Therefore, in the US, the T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are fully functional on AT&T's network.
3) But AT&T's X will be lacking some HSPA+ capabilities on T-Mobile's network.
Again, I'm not confirming or asserting any of this as fact, but only trying to summarize as best I can what we have been discussing.

Are you absolutely sure about this? Do you know it for a fact, or have you just read it somewhere?
I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?
I am going to buy a Moto X at Mondays sale, but haven't figured out if I should just go with the dev version, or try the t-mobile version, which may or may not be sim-locked.

If you gain any further insight into this between now and Monday please do report back to this thread. I have zero knowledge one way or the other, but this is the first I've heard that there is any branding on T-Mobile X.

I bought a t-mobile motomaker moto x. Mine arrived the 21st. For a FACT it is unbranded and sim-unlocked. Using on AT&T. The phone has nothing to do with T-mobile other than it came with a T-mobile sim card.
edit: as you can see the phone has no branding.

Yes. I'm sure. As another use posted above me, the device has NO tmobile logos, and is Sim UNLOCKED. I've put an ATT sim inside and it works fine. Moto chat is useless, they don't know anything about their own products. Get the motomaker tmobile version unless you don't care about colors. Then get the dev edition because unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty on that one.
Tmobile doesn't really sell this phone, moto does. Tmobile didn't touch it at all, it's the developer edition with 16gb of storage and without the "Developer Edition" engraving.

I'm looking to get a non contract moto X but am confused by all the versions. For instance, Republic sells it for $299.

Republic wireless phone only works with republic wireless.
Start with your carrier then go from there. If GSM and you NEED root i suggest t-mobile or dev edition so u can unlock bootloader and always guarantee root.

What carrier are you on? As the other guy said, if you have a GSM carrier (AT&T, tmobile, other mvno's of those carriers), then go with the tmobile version. You CAN unlock the bootloader and root it, and it comes sim unlocked so you can use it on att/whatever other gsm carrier you want. If you have verizon, then get the CDMA dev edition.

I want it as a non contract phone. Currently I'm on straighttalk and they have a system where you buy a sim from them. But I may go elsewhere. I'm debating between a moto X or a nexus 5.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm repeating questions, but I'm not from the US.
So I'm not too familiar with mobile phones being locked and sim locked and things like these.
My question is, I'm thinking of bringing a Moto X into Singapore for my daily use.
Just wondering, according to all the above comments, I should bring in a T-Mobile version instead since sim and bootloader is not locked to any carrier?
And I got one more question

The radios all differ slightly. And yes, you should get the tmobile one since it's sim unlocked. I don't know the bands of your carrier, so you might have to look it up and compare it with the US bands.

Ok just checked. Seems like only 3G will work in Singapore. LTE here is band 3 and 7. whereas T-mobile seems to be just on band 4.

GSM DEV ED is working factory unlocked out of the box as is the T mobile version. No activation needed or required. VZW edition is for those on their network not wanting to void warranty by unlocking bootloader.

I'm pretty certain that the Verizon one will not work overseas. Best bet is to get a T-Mobile or GSM DE. Swappa is the best place for it.

It's my understanding that an unlocked moto-x will work on either CDMA or GSM networks depending on the sim that is put in the phone. There is apparently no hardware difference in the various phones other than 16gb or 32gb. The differences are in the preloading and locking of carrier stuff...and the warranty for developer edition not being voided by unlocking it.

All verizon LTE phones are sim un-locked now (FCC requires this as part of the licensing deal for the 700MHz spectrum). The trick is to find a local carrier that matches the phones radio bands, or to buy a phone from a carrier whos radio bands match your perferred local carriers as closely as possible. The Wikipedia page lists the variants of the Moto X and their radios.

I just returned from a week in Europe with my Verizon Moto X (non-DE). When I landed in Italy, it took about 10 minutes before the phone picked up a local carrier and then everything worked great. In Italy I was roaming on Vodafone, and in Switzerland I was roaming on Swisscom. Data worked great in both places. I didn't try using a local SIM card, but I'm sure there are plenty that would work.

What carrier for XT1050??

I have a Moto X XT1050. Its suppose to be carrier unlocked but every one i try i get the same, they cant activate.
It was recently activated on Alltel but the were just bought out by at&t. Idk what carrier this phone will work under

SIM lock will obviously not allow you to use it with a GSM based carrier's SIM. If its supposed to be SIM unlocked, that is another story... please provide specifics of what happens when "they cant activate."
Bootloader lock will prevent you from rooting, and/or flashing other firmware to it.

Ok so I called Verizon and the guy said it was carrier unlocked and they dont support it. I checked a few others through thier website but no luck.
The bootloader has been unlocked, the phone is rooted....the SIM I'm not sure about. It doesn't have SIM in it but it gets 2 bars of signal

So wait you say SIM unlocked? Is it the same as carrier unlocked?? If its unlocked then shouldn't I be able to activate with a verizon SIM maybe?

I used xt1050 in Indonesia use gsm carrier and it work fine. So i think my device is sim unlock

Verizon will not activate any phones that aren't Verizon branded. That's what the rep. means by "unsupported".
Some CDMA MVNOs may support it, I haven't checked around to see. Chances are T-Mo or AT&T will. As noted by another poster he found a GSM carrier in Indonesia that it works with. Chances are any European carrier will too, but that won't help him at the moment.

At&t won't take it either. I don't get it. What's the point in an unlocked phone if nobody will take it??

Ok so I called Verizon and the guy said it was carrier unlocked and they dont support it. I checked a few others through thier website but no luck.
The bootloader has been unlocked, the phone is rooted....the SIM I'm not sure about. It doesn't have SIM in it but it gets 2 bars of signal

Verizon uses the XT1060... IF the listing on Wikipedia are correct, the XT1050 and XT1060 use slightly different frequency for CDMA.
Not to mention, as @glarepate has already said, Verizon will not activate a device that isn't Verizon Branded.
IN the OP you say its SIM Unlocked, now you say you're not sure about the SIM??

CDMA carriers, like Verizon, might have the GSM side unlocked (i.e. you can pop an ATT or T-Mobile or other SIM in there and use it), but the CDMA side is LOCKED. Sprint, another CDMA carrier, has the GSM side SIM LOCKED on their 2013 X (XT1056)

The verizon rep said it is carrier unlocked. All I know is that my step dad had it on alltel CDMA. Alltel just got bought out so that's a no go there. But the rep ask if i had a sim card, i was thinking maybe i could pop in a verizon one and it would work. Idk much about GSM but im gonna take it to a phone place in town tomorrow and see what they say.

Verizon doesn't sell the XT1050, so I wouldn't put any faith into what they tell you. If its not a Verizon Branded Xt1060, they will not activate it on their service PERIOD.
Verizon still uses CDMA for voice and 3G data. So even if you put a Verizon 4GLTE SIM in there, it wont work.
The Verizon XT1060 is GSM Unlocked out of the box. (This is due to FCC C-Block Rules), so IF this was a Verizon XT1060, you could put a T-Mobile, ATT, Rogers, etc SIM in there and use the GSM side.
BUT you said this phone is an XT1050. So its not the same.

Well something weird happened while my X was in recovery mode. It was plugged into my laptop and it popped up up "Install drivers for your XT1060." Do they all say that or is mine just being stupid?
How can I determine what model of the X I have, I'm so confused about this phone man.

Can you tell me any other carriers inside the US, lol. I already checked with AT&t, got the same thing as with Verizon. Not sure about T-Mo, that's the only one I haven't checked that picks up where I live. I have a great phone and can't even activate it. It kinda sucks.
And one more thing, sorry if I'm being a pain but why couldn't I use a Verizon SIM in it and it'd work??

I have used my XT1050 on Verizon by swapping out the Sim. It is carrier unlocked. I was also able to unlock my bootloader using the Motorola website.

By all means check with T-Mo. They are trying to get more customers and may be willing to work with you. They tend to be more flexible that AT&T anyway.
Ting uses Sprint (so that may not work for you if there is no coverage) and Cricket uses AT&T, both have BYOD.

Sprint doesn't have coverage here, not sure about T-Mo. At&t gets coverage here now, they use to not.
The last carrier the phone was activated with was Alltel but they were bought out. I'll check and call around

THe FCC ID on the XT1050 and XT1060 appear to be the same.
I haven't done enough digging to confirm the similarities or differences between the XT1050 and XT1060. As I said earlier, IF the wikipedia entry for the 2013 X is correct, at least the CDMA frequencies are slightly different.
I have seen my Verizon Dev Edition XT1060 list another model at one point when trying to install drivers. (ANd I've always had the stock roms installed.) so I'd just say its a little strange from time to time.
Any querries you can do of the phone right now are all software based, so if you have an XT1050 ROM on the phone, the results would say its an XT1050. If you have a 3rd party ROM on there, you likely wont see an accurate model number.
The best way is... IF the phone has the original Moto back on it.. look for the small, very fine, print at the bottom on the back. Sometimes you have to tilt the phone side to side to get light to reflect off it just right... and If you have eyes like mine, you might need a magnifying glass to read it. It will have the FCC ID and the model number on it.

I have the stock ROM installed but a custom recovery. It's the XT1050. This phone is weird lol

Hey @KidJoe, guess what? I called the postpaid department of Verizon and the lady told me that since my Moto X was on Alltel last that I could bring it to a store and they can put it in their system. I told her everything i knew about the phone. She said it can NOT be activated on prepaid BUT it can on postpaid. Got that same info from 2 or 3 other online support reps, lol.. So in that case you CAN activate NON verizon phones on Verizon.... oh AND I flashed the Verizon firmware on it and it works great.
