[Q] Sprint Version SIM Unlocked? - Moto X Q&A

I just got off of the phone with a Sprint support rep in the International services department, and according to her the SIM slot in the Sprint version of the Moto X is unlocked from the factory.
Can anyone verify that this is true?

Bump, I'm interested very much too!

Any one confirm this?
Can Any one confirm this?
Awaiting reply...

That's the point, so Americans can use Sprint in the US, but when we travel just pop in an international sim.

I contacted Sprint support, they said before using it in other networks (gsm/umts) you must activate international service (which unlocks gsm). mine was not activated and here in Russia I'm stuck - phone sees our carriers but can't register. and sprint support can't help me as the phone isn't online on sprint or smth like that. that's such a pain in the ass 'cause I've had a Sprint Photon 4G before and it worked without any "making love"

Yes, "INVALID CARD - NO SERVICE"

Yes same issue here. The unlock windows wont pop up.

Moral of the story is to not buy a Sprint Moto X for anything other then Sprint. Do your research and buy a proper GSM version.

Thanks for your response, I feel relieved. Does this means that when i go back to the US i can activate for international use?

Based on the many posts of people asking for how to SIM Unlock the Sprint Moto X, I'd say its not true.

Interesting. This is the first i've heard of that. There were other reports/posts that if your phone has active sprint service/account, you can call sprint and get the sim unlock code. Nothing was said about needing to just add international service to the account for the phone to be unlocked.
In any case, the moral of the story seems to be what Steve-x posted... If you are NOT a Sprint Customer, don't buy a Sprint X for international use due to all the posts of troubles and what seems to be impossibilities getting them SIM Unlocked (you can't just pop a non-sprint sim in "out of the box", Sprint will only unlock if your their customer, it seems no online services have the unlock codes for sprint moto X, etc).

No man can hack it, what a pity!
Unlocking the phone for use with GSM Sim without Sprint service is not possible as Moto only releases the codes to the specific carrier and Sprint will not give it to you.
If you do get it unlocked, it will not work in the US on a GSM network ie: T-Mobile or ATT. They're hardware restricted from working on local GSM networks p/fca allowances. I have seen a few devices like some black Berry's work locally after being unlocked but they are few and far between.

[Q] How can we enable(trick) Sprint HTC One for Domestic(US) Sim use (data only)

After many conversations with HTC and Sprint it appears Sprint has locked out the ability for use of domestic data cards from competing carriers on their sim capable devices such as the HTC One. It is the consensus opinion this should be an unlock-able option to ensure fair competition of market provided the user is not under contract and is in good standing with Sprint/Carrier. This is currently in Legislation and backed by President Obama. There are also over 115,000 petitioners so far.
I am not under contract, in good standing(paid) yet Sprint says they "can't" enable the use of a competitors Domestic Sim, They did not use the term unlock yet a lock symbol appears in the APN settings next to the Carriers APN(Verizon, T-Mobile)when the Sim card is in. Sprint pretended to be helpful. One support agent even gave me the msid and false ##12345# code saying to use the msid then to unlock, how nice. Another Rep discovered My phone has no Unlock MSL as it is not carrier locked. I purchased it, own it, never activated it on the Sprint Network therefore no MSL needed to unlock. I have an unlocked device. Locked "to" Sprint but not "by" Sprint. I have the right to provision data from any carrier of my choosing but how?
Not going to accept that it "can't" be done. It must be possible to trick or bypass the lock. Example: I took my Nexus 7 LTE to Verizon for a data card. Initially the rep told me it would not be possible. I now have LTE Verizon data.
My question here is can we trick the phone into accepting a Domestic Sim? It must be possible after reading so many threads and seeing the genius Dev going on here. It must be possible to use the device at least for Internet Data at least 3G. LTE should even be possible.
1. Force Roaming with Roam Control?
2. International Rom then the phone would view our Domestic(US) card as International?
3. Flash a Verizon HTC One Rom to the Sprint HTC One to trick the phone into thinking it is Verizon enabling the Verizon Sim to work?(using the sim from my unlocked tablet)
Anyone try this with Success?
This may be possible by provisioning through the sim by the new carrier (If they will do it) like with my Nexus 7 tablet. But I am curious to know if the above/or other options might work.

I have looked at the link. It is the terminal emulator means to gain entry that Viperboy has made his tool from. It did not work for me. That is why i started the thread. I am pursuing other means as stated in the Original Post

[Q] Use in Europe

Hi all. If I purchase one of Moto X Sprint, ATT, Verizon
version, can I use it on our Europe network regarding
SIM lock?
Sorry I'm rookie about Moto X, I use so far other Moto Droid2 and Droid4 only.
Att you have to Sim unlock but its pretty easy to find some place online to do it for $10-15
The verizon and t mobile ones come unlocked.
Sprint and us cellular ones I think you have to be a customer to unlock so not easy to do.
You could also get some of the pre unlocked Latin ones.

I bought the Moto X one or two weeks after it was launched, I'm in Egypt it was sim unlocked however I know that all carriers except ATT and maybe Sprint can be officially unlocked.
I rooted it installed several firmwares, now I'm using ATT 4.4 leak, It's perfect.

Surely you just check the bands on the network your trying to use it on. Look up your networks bands.
I checked before I bought, 2100 is supported by the phone and I'm using 2100 without issue.

Hi there, I'm posting here because it's nearly the same question but I'd like to be as sure as possible
I'm looking for this device, 'cause I really like it! The problem is that I live in Italy, and, as everyone, I want to be sure it will work here!
Reading other topics, I've seen that it all depend on the band it's used in my country.
As you che see here (http ://allworldcellphones.com/gsm-frequencies-list. htm), Italy use the GSM 900/1800 frequancies and it should be fine for this phone (or am I wrong?).
Now, if so, what does it actually means? If the frequencies match, does it means that I'll be able to call, send sms, use 2G/3G/4G or there are more parameters I need to check?
And second question: I really like the Moto Make idea! Is there any way to personalize my device and get it shipped to me? Because, if I'm not wrong, Motorola only ships to USA..
Thanks for reading (and, possibly, helping) and sorry for horror typo!

Sprint doesn't have 900 3G band used in Europe, only ATT has band 7 4G, all other models don't get 4G in Europe, only 3G. Check, not sure if I am right here. My GS4 has all 3G and 4G bands for USA T-Mobile and Europe

GSM 900/1800 that's for 2G. All MotoX support that. Then you have to match 3G, and then 4G bands.
Looks like ATT is the best model for Europe but its also SIM and bootloader locked! Next in line is T-Mobile, followed by Verizon, both have same 2G and 3G bands, no 4G for Europe, SIM unlocked, but Verizon has bootloader locked

First of all, thanks for answering
Then, don't you think that the developer edition (GSM) could be a good option? For what I heard, with that I should be only missing the 4G network, wich would be unavaible anyway, wichever brand I choose..
Or am I wrong?
The other plus il that I wouldn't lose the warranty in case of modding..!

What carrier for XT1050??

I have a Moto X XT1050. Its suppose to be carrier unlocked but every one i try i get the same, they cant activate.
It was recently activated on Alltel but the were just bought out by at&t. Idk what carrier this phone will work under
Can anyone help??
From what I recall, the XT1050 variant was made for regional CDMA carriers, and is probably SIM and Bootloader locked.
SIM lock will obviously not allow you to use it with a GSM based carrier's SIM. If its supposed to be SIM unlocked, that is another story... please provide specifics of what happens when "they cant activate."
Bootloader lock will prevent you from rooting, and/or flashing other firmware to it.

Verizon will not activate any phones that aren't Verizon branded. That's what the rep. means by "unsupported".
Some CDMA MVNOs may support it, I haven't checked around to see. Chances are T-Mo or AT&T will. As noted by another poster he found a GSM carrier in Indonesia that it works with. Chances are any European carrier will too, but that won't help him at the moment.

SIM unlocked = Carrier Unlocked yes, at least for GSM carriers. But the GSM carriers might not offer much support getting your device working.
CDMA carriers, like Verizon, might have the GSM side unlocked (i.e. you can pop an ATT or T-Mobile or other SIM in there and use it), but the CDMA side is LOCKED. Sprint, another CDMA carrier, has the GSM side SIM LOCKED on their 2013 X (XT1056)

Verizon doesn't sell the XT1050, so I wouldn't put any faith into what they tell you. If its not a Verizon Branded Xt1060, they will not activate it on their service PERIOD.
Verizon still uses CDMA for voice and 3G data. So even if you put a Verizon 4GLTE SIM in there, it wont work.
The Verizon XT1060 is GSM Unlocked out of the box. (This is due to FCC C-Block Rules), so IF this was a Verizon XT1060, you could put a T-Mobile, ATT, Rogers, etc SIM in there and use the GSM side.
BUT you said this phone is an XT1050. So its not the same.
Good luck.

By all means check with T-Mo. They are trying to get more customers and may be willing to work with you. They tend to be more flexible that AT&T anyway.
Ting uses Sprint (so that may not work for you if there is no coverage) and Cricket uses AT&T, both have BYOD.

I know there are others but these are just off the top of my head.

I have used my XT1050 on Verizon by swapping out the Sim. It is carrier unlocked. I was also able to unlock my bootloader using the Motorola website.

Sprint doesn't have coverage here, not sure about T-Mo. At&t gets coverage here now, they use to not.
The last carrier the phone was activated with was Alltel but they were bought out. I'll check and call around
Thanks everybody!!

Well something weird happened while my X was in recovery mode. It was plugged into my laptop and it popped up up "Install drivers for your XT1060." Do they all say that or is mine just being stupid?
How can I determine what model of the X I have, I'm so confused about this phone man.

THe FCC ID on the XT1050 and XT1060 appear to be the same.
I haven't done enough digging to confirm the similarities or differences between the XT1050 and XT1060. As I said earlier, IF the wikipedia entry for the 2013 X is correct, at least the CDMA frequencies are slightly different.
I have seen my Verizon Dev Edition XT1060 list another model at one point when trying to install drivers. (ANd I've always had the stock roms installed.) so I'd just say its a little strange from time to time.
Any querries you can do of the phone right now are all software based, so if you have an XT1050 ROM on the phone, the results would say its an XT1050. If you have a 3rd party ROM on there, you likely wont see an accurate model number.
The best way is... IF the phone has the original Moto back on it.. look for the small, very fine, print at the bottom on the back. Sometimes you have to tilt the phone side to side to get light to reflect off it just right... and If you have eyes like mine, you might need a magnifying glass to read it. It will have the FCC ID and the model number on it.

Hey @KidJoe, guess what? I called the postpaid department of Verizon and the lady told me that since my Moto X was on Alltel last that I could bring it to a store and they can put it in their system. I told her everything i knew about the phone. She said it can NOT be activated on prepaid BUT it can on postpaid. Got that same info from 2 or 3 other online support reps, lol.. So in that case you CAN activate NON verizon phones on Verizon.... oh AND I flashed the Verizon firmware on it and it works great.

LG G4 work with Verizon or any other carriers?

I am wondering if my Sprint LG G4 model LGLS991 will work with Verizon or any other carriers if I unlock the phone?
Wondering the same unlocked mine already.

It will never work, Verzion will never activate a sprint phone and sprint will never activate a verzion phone. Radio's, compatiblity -- none of that matters. Phones are tied to specific carriers (CDMA only) when they are sold and there's nothing we can do to change that.
I guess that answers my question. But I have seen people saying they have used a sprint phone on verizon.
I know sprint phones won't work on Verizon just curious if lte compatibility with t mobile or cricket

If you get it unlocked (by sprint), then it'll work on any GSM carrier outside of United States. Even after its unlocked, it'll not work on Domestic GSM carriers.
Because of the frequencies? There are two types of unlocks domestic and international. Mine is unlocked on both.
Sprint will not do a domestic unlock, unless you have access to their back end system that handles unlocks. (even then I don't think its possible). Have you actually tried using an AT&T or TMobile (US Only) sims in your sprint phone? Even if you have the appropriate radio, the carrier lock will prevent it from working on any domestic network.
I know this from a very reliable source inside sprint.
The most sprint will do for you is unlock it for international use granted you are current on your bill and your account is in good standing.
If you own the phone outright they will unlock for domestic use. New law went into effect in February, also wife works for sprint. It was an annoying process but I finally found someone who knew what they were doing. Yes an at&t sim works in the phone.
What about using a sprint phone on Boost or Virgin? Or possibly using a donor phone as was done before laws changed then changed again?
WOW...

You are feeding wrong info to this thread as well. Yes, it will work. Sprint just makes it a hassle to unlock (DSU)....

So you're telling me sprint will activate a verizon phone?
---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------
For those that are still curious go here
http://www.sprint.com/legal/unlocking_policy.html?ECID=vanity:unlock
and here's what you can take away from DSU.
"For inactive devices, customers must contact Sprint Customer Care to request that their DSU-capable device be unlocked and may have to take steps to perform an over-the-air update to ensure the unlock programming has been relayed to the device. Additional validation may be required to ensure eligibility.
Sprint makes no guaranty that an unlocked device will work on another carrier's network. Whether another carrier will accept and activate a device is subject to that carrier's policies and capabilities. Additionally, Sprint devices which the owner has attempted to reprogram or activate on another carrier's network or otherwise altered from its initial programming or settings may not be able to be reactivated on the Sprint network."
So to clarify, even if sprint unlocks your tray, it is more than likely that Verzion WILL NOT activate a sprint phone on their network.

With LTE phones, you don't have to activate anything if you have an active SIM card. Of course, it needs to be unlocked to work on different carriers. My VZW G3 works on Sprint just by popping in a Sprint SIM.
Not true

AT&T Nexus 6 isnt factory unlocked. Lol
Now I remember why I stopped coming to xda.
It's simple: It will never work on another CDMA carrier. Only a select few will work on a domestic GSM carrier; if you have a carrier version that is "unlocked", it will not work on another carrier. It could possible work on Boost or Virgin, since they use Sprint, but YMMV
