since it has no microSD slot...? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

... I was wondering if there is (or can be), a "virtual SD card" or protected partition where you can put some data, (like podcasts or documents), that won't be erased if you do a factory reset. On my Note 2, I've been such a rom-flashing fool, sometimes trying out two or three roms in a day, it was handy to have certain files on the SD card like docs, podcasts, music, that didn't get erased when i erased everything else and cleared the caches in advance of flashing.
-peter

If you use TWRP to wipe the phone with standard option it does not wipe the sdcard directory. Do that kind of stuff should be safe. But I always backup on pc just to make sure anyways if it's something important

perfect thanks. now, i've never used twrp, only clockword mod, and i don't have a custom recovery on right now, (not rooted at the moment), so does clockwork mod have and "sdcard" directory too like twrp?
-peter

I haven't used cwm in years, but I do recall it working the same way. The sd card directory is on every phone these days. It's just the folder Google gave for things not using the system

awesome! with that, i really won't miss the SD card that much then... other than the constantly looming awareness of limited storage. But I'm pretty fastidious about my phones and computers. I happily delete apps I don't use or use only infrequently, and have only very few songs I don't like quite a lot.

Did you get it to work with your nexus 6? I cannot seem to get USB otg working on mine.

TWRP supports USB OTG, so you can backup all of your files on a USB drive, flash a custom ROM (assuming you're wiping literally everything), and then transfer everything back.

I highly, highly recommend the Meenova. I store all of my rom's, nandroid backups, music, movies and so on. Google or YouTube Meenova. It's about the size of a quarter or so. One of the cheapest and best accessories I bought for my Nexus 5. Planning on using it on my Nexus 6 when it arrives.

[Q] Really hard trade decision

So I put my Desire HD on Craigslist and I have a few responses, narrowed them down to two. One is for a mint (looks almost look it just came out of the box) Nexus S. The second is for a really good condition unlocked Galaxy Tab that has AT&T 3G bands. The only thing about the Nexus S is that even though it would be off contract that's still another 50 each month added to my AT&T bill.
I also got offers for a Captivate that's really good looking and a vibrant with a 16 gb sd card.
So, what should I do?
I'd personally stay away from all of the Samsung phones. Galaxy S has no external SD-Support and is for T-Mobile.
Captivate and Vibrants have their own issues. And I wouldn't consider them a fair trade unless there was some additional $$ involved.
Personally I'd go with the Tablet out of the deal. Especially if you already have a phone. Just remember.. it's no iPad
Galaxy S has no external SD-Support and is for T-Mobile

[Q] Trying to decide on getting Nexus 6 (Verizon)

So here I am trying to figure out if I should get the Nexus 6 on Verizon or if I should get the LG G3 instead. I got to play around with the G3 for a good week and was very impressed with it compared to the Note 3 I currently use as my daily driver. Being that the Nexus 6 to me doesn't seem much bigger compared to the Note 2 (which I still have one) I'm not overly concerned about the size. So I'll throw out a few questions here and see perhaps if the Nexus 6 is a good fit for me based upon these few things...
1 - I noticed a lot of reviews (ie: Engadget, Android Police) mention the slow focus on video recording. Has this been fixed or improved on Lollipop 5.1 or at least on any custom ROMs/kernels at all?
2 - Is there any good methods or cases that could allow me to use an micro SD card on the Nexus 6 as of yet? I tried to Google search and only really saw one Kickstarter project but maybe I'm over looking something. I am aware of Meenova but sadly that lacks the ability to have that in use while charging the Nexus 6 at the same time.
Thanks so much in advance for any info on these two questions I have so far.
The N6 is a fantastic phone. I haven't regretted buying it at all. Can't compare to the G3 though, since I've never held one in my hand.
About your questions:
1 - Can't really answer, I seldom use the video recorder.
2 - You can use Meenova and charge at the same time if you use qi-charging.
I played with the Nexus at a Verizon store yesterday and I liked it. Just waiting on my cases to show up before I get two (there's no way my wife can have a phone without it being covered in body armor). I was also bummed about no sd but a couple of guys on here told me about meenova and I have two on the way as well. Then again after seeing the specs on the S6, they could be trying to make micro sd's extinct too. It's really a tough choice for you as I don't know much about the G3 other than on Big Red it's either a G3 or a Nexus if you want root and rom flashing. My post probably doesn't help much but I liked what I saw from the phone in the store.
Is the meenova the only adaptor that will work with the nexus? I have a pqi micro sd card reader that is about the same size. And it works with other androids and you can plug it into a regular USB slot too.

Have you tested this? The only reason I ask is the Nexus 5 will not qi charge if OTG is in use. I'm curious as to whether this is different on the N6

It's not the only one that works, it was just recommended to me by a couple of posters since I didn't have one at all.

Question for 32 gb Nexus users.

I recently bought a 32 gb Nexus after the price drop and already am troubled with storage. Looking for guidance and trying to decide if its worth returning and making the upgrade to the moto x pure since it has expandable storage. Was planning on using the nexus 6 for google fi. Could someone give me insight.
Insight on what exactly? I've been using the 32gb variant for 5 months now and have no trouble with storage. Not sure what could possibly take up so much storage besides music, movies, etc. To remedy this I would suggest using a cloud based storage to stream if you want to listen to music. There's also the option of using a small flash drive such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digi...1445546891&sr=8-2&keywords=kingston+micro+usb
Hopefully this was helpful.
Not enough? What exactly is the issue with storage. I've got a 32gb, with 2 ROMs, tibu backup, twrp backup and still have 15gb left
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
It's just that after backing up all my apps contacts and only placing 10 gigs of music on my phone I'm finding myself with only 3 gigs to spare. Cloud storage is currently not an option since I'm planning on leaving a unlimited data plan to go to google Fi and in my current budget I have room for a 2 gig capacity. I have an hour long commute a day so music is a must haha.
Deryck thanks for the link on the usb android memory reader that thing looks tiny and awesome. I was just looking at insight on keeping the nexus 6 or switching the moto x pure. Do you own that one that you sent me?? I like the idea of usb memory reader I just was worried about it possibly damaging the usb port since I keep my phone in the cupholder of my car. Just curious if you worried about durability. Also I know that stickmount is root required and have no idea if rooting causes any harm to google fi.
BlueEyes that's sweet you have so much room! Before adding anything to my phone the phone is at 25 gb. haha

Root will not mess with google fi.
The moto x pure is a nice phone but if you can find a way to work with the storage on the nexus then you'll save a few hundred dollars. I do not own that device I linked to but would not worry about durability, if it is just sitting in the cup holder there shouldn't be any damage done.

I have about 15gb of space left, but I keep all my large sized games for my previous device. This as a daily driver is really about managing space. Do you need 10gb of music? I'd consider a separate device dedicated to just music if it were me.
Thanks for the great idea Asacado I'll just convert my old galaxy s4 as a pure music and entertainment powerhouse! This will work quite well! No need to give up wireless charging bigger screen and first to update over some silly moto x pure!! Thanks everyone for helping <3 the xda community.

Doesn't have to be all or nothing, cheap 32gig or new motox... Is the 64gig nexus not $50 more anymore?
Moto x will never compare if you want customization and fast updates.
I had 13GB of music on my phone, well over 3-4 hours, and still had 5GB left after apps, pictures, and misc stuff, all on my 32GB Nexus.

i learned to deal with 16gb when all nexus were offered that way, 32gb is extremely easy to deal with. but my completely unlimited tmobile account helps, as i learned to keep stuff like music in the cloud. right now i have 3 nandroid backups, 6gb of photos, and much more. and still gave spece left

OMG :c I didn't mean to be sarcastic I was just really excited to know that all of it was a possibility.!! I haven't really flashed phones since an htc evo and I forgot how minimal phones can be. My last phone was the newest LG G2 and it had constant issues when I unlocked the bootloader so I had to return to bloatware. :'c For your backups are they total backups or just radios and the important things? Sorry again for sounding sarcastic total accident.

My twrp is full system, data and boot. I wipe caches prior to backing up to decrease size. As davlik can be a gig itself. I backup (tibu) most user apps and app data. Sorry for getting upset. I actually like helping others and can't stand those who belittle users with less knowledge. I have a LG G4 and I want to buy new smartphone ... But used one for now.

Hey guys.. recently I sold my Oneplus Two after using it for 1 year and bought new LG G4. But I bought it thinking I can enjoy entirely new things. But unfortunately I lost my enthusiasm. I didn't love the phone for many reason. 1. Battery life is very low. 2. No unlock bootloader. 3. No root for Marshmallow. 4. Phone heats up very quick. And many cons too. Now I'm planning to downgrade to phone with good specs and not too high end. So I thought of choosing Nexus 6. What do you guys think ? Is it a right choice to buy used one with 203 dollar ? ...

Sent from my LG-H818 using Tapatalk
Just this month I had an option to upgrade to a new phone. I chose buying a used Nexus 6 instead. I could not be happier. It has what I always try and make phones, stock android. There is still tons of developing going on. I don't even care that it is an older phone. I had the LG G3.
We can't answer that. Only you can. Nexus like you said yourself is considered old, however many of us would not consider the phones out now a considerable upgrade.

sure it does.. just not via sdcard.
I don't know about you, but in the OP's situation I wouldn't want to have to play around with a dongle sitting in my USB port simply to increase my storage space. Using a USB OTG device is inconvenient except in certain use cases, such as at home backing up a device with TWRP. USB OTG may be expandable storage, but it's simply not optimal. Thus the OP still needs to ask himself whether 32GB is enough.
I don't think 32GB is enough, not without being ruthless in your space management. I know you'll probably disagree, but I'm willing to lay odds that as an owner of a 32GB model you're pretty ruthless in your space management. Owners of 64GB devices have the luxury of not having to be so ruthless, and I really think it adds to the enjoyment of the device.

I don't use otg, but it is an option in expandable storage.. you said there aren't any options. I have a 32gb n6. I bought it in nov, 2014. anyways, 32gb is more than enough for me. and I mod my device, nearly daily. and have 2 3.5gb+ nandroid back ups in my storage. before n6, I always had 16gb. now 32gb is spacious for me. also, I'm an amateur photographer that only uses the n6 for photography. what I don't do is keep music on my device, that's what seems to save me. I use google play music services, and I always have that to use. when I take a subway home from work, I'll download several albums to listen to, beforehand. BTW, on tmobile, unlimited high speed data, in NYC
I forgot about USB OTG as an option. I stand corrected on that.
Like I said, you're ruthless in your space management, where I don't have to be. That however doesn't mean I'm not. If I were to put my stuff on your device, it would all fit with about a gigabyte left. Having used devices with far less storage, space management became an art form with me. But on this device, not worrying about how much space I'm using is liberating, and it's that liberating feeling that makes using this device more enjoyable.

ruthless, I'd never say that in this case. over time, I do end up deleting a lot though.
Had the G4 last year. Decided to sell it after a few months due to the subpar battery life. I do miss the camera and brighter screen, however, I prefer the N6 for the bigger screen, much better battery life, wireless charging and Project Fi. $200 for a used N6 is still a good price.

Of course you could shunt what you delete to cloud storage. But the fact you have to pick and choose what to keep on your phone only proves correct what some sites, for example Android Authority, are saying now about devices with 32GB storage: it's really too small these days, so the OP really needs to think this through. Currently Swappa has 64GB models for a low of $280. $200 is an excellent deal for a 32GB device, depending on condition. But is the price worth the potential inconvenience the smaller amount of storage may impose?

How do I Flash Amazon Fire 7 Nexus(modded) (originally 5.1.1) back to fire os 5.1.1

I flashed my son's Amazon Fire 5.1.1 with Nexus ROM using FlashFire.
What is the safest way to go back to FireOS 5.1.1??
I am still searching the forums, but I am nervous because I've already destroyed 1 of these things and really don't want to do a second.

Safest approach IMO is to sideload 5.1.1 via Amazon's stock recovery. See this tread; first post has a nice video.

Surprised you stepped away from Nexus (or any custom rom for this device) if looking for 3rd party apps. If FireOS is a must you'll probably need to keep some of Amazon's massive app portfolio from launching at boot and reloading even when 'swipped' away.

Well I may have to step away from the device altogether. Unfortunately we bought 3 of them as Easter gifts for kids. I didn't research the device enough before purchasing (my fault). We found them for $28 on Amazon, saw they could be rooted with CM12 and assumed it would work like the Nook Color did. (my fault completely).
In the 3-4 days that my son used it and we had moved apps to the sd card...for whatever reason when I took a look at the tablet to see how space was being utilized and how well it was running on the 4th day....the sd card didn't even show up. And I know (if you want a nook color experience...buy a nook color)...

Nook Color is a nice device. However, you can probably achieve your objectives with a little more work. Are the current problems confined to issues with SD card access? Or are there other concerns.

I have to admit that I don't use the tablet. It is mainly for my 11 year old niece, 13 year old niece and 13 year old son. Biggest concern for me is the sd card just becoming blank. I put cyanogen on my sons color 2? 3? years ago? and I haven't had to touch it since. He installs apps, copies movies over etc...but for the last 6 months he had been using it with a cracked screen....which seemed annoying to me but he didn't mind, but then the back fell off..lol....
I just want something that works and can install apk via usb cable etc...watch movies...play KODI. Each of the 3 Fire's have 64gb sd cards in them. So they should last a little while.
Let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm not totally against looking at another custom rom, but I may have to buy a 4th one so that I can mess with it.
