If su is still there (/system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su), all you need is SuperSU, which you can install from the Play store. (Without an "su-ish" app, apps can't get root, even though su is installed.) If su isn't still there you'll have to root again.

No, if SuperSU is still there and you don't get root, the su binry is evidently missing. That mans that you have to root all over again. (You need to be rooted to install the su binary, which you aren't, so ... which is why rooting uses an exploit [a different one in each line of phones] to get temporary root so it can install su to get permanent root.)

i have tried with odin but it keeps failing should i use the kingo root insted ?
at this stage what would be the best way to re-root
thanks in advance
Are you following these instructions? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715
Everyone else seems to report that this method for getting root works.
Kingo root works (though some people don't like Kingo)
Also - always freeze OTA update app after you root, otherwise you'll lose root with every OTA update.
If you're expecting an OTA update, you can unfreeze the app, then use SuperSU survival mode, then let it update, and then turn off survival mode to get root back. But ofc it's too late for that now in your case.

Kingo is fine. The Heimdall and Odin one is a pain in the but and risky. Mostly for restoring. I used kingo and its just fine. If you mess up then you can go to that other link and restore with or without root.

your right odin is a pain sometimes. kingo just worked first time boom one shot done
and i want to thank all the developers for there hard work and time for any program that allows us to do things we love to do with our phones
I bought a new Note 3 and rooted using Kingo which didn't reset the Knox Counter. Then, being careless, I let my phone update to 4.4.2 which removed root. I know that there is currently not a way to root 4.4.2, but some apps on the phone still think I'm rooted. SuperSu is still installed, so don't know if this is what they are seeing. I already did a factory reset from recovery, but didn't help. Can anybody help me completely remove any trace of root so that the apps can't tell?
You can't till we get root superuser is installed in system\app folder and you can't delete from there without root acess

So I've rooted my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active with towel root and i tried running "Gamecih" and "Gamekiller" but they both say "Root Access needed". They're both apps that help you cheat in games and I've used them before with my old rooted android. Root checker gives me a ok and apps like "link2sd" work fine. Was wondering if my root could be limited somehow.

Did you install SuperSU?
Hey everyone. I am not new at rooting phones but this appears to be the one phone that is giving me issues.
My note 4 is telus, was n910w
installed this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/development/rom-vision-x-n4-intl-t2943448
working beautifully thus far but I cant seem to root....
I have tripped KNOX 5 times so far trying to do it, each time it appears my phone is not rooted as titanium cannot verify SU, and aswell I have a root checker which tells me it is not rooted.
I have tried several versions of ODIN, and cf auto root n910t, AND V.
Do I maybe have to reinstall my rom? Or is there something I am missing because this is frustrating me....
Is there something I am doing wrong? Superuser IS on my phone, but its not doing anything but being there.... Please any kind of help would be appreciated as I am stumped.
I'm not sure what rom you are running but I do know there were some issues with su and lollipop in the beginning that required you to go into superuser app setting 's and change from prompt for root to allow all requests. For some reason it wouldn't prompt for root for root apps. But if you changed it it would auto.atically allow root apps root access

This worked, I am a dummy lol
Thanks alot!
Glad I could help
Glad you got it worked out but note that you can only ever trip Knox once. Once it's tripped it's tripped, so don't worry about it.

I had lost root after flashing the PopRocks ROM. Couldn't figure it out and stumbled across this post. Now it works perfectly. Thanks! :good:
i have a asus ME172v and i bought it used a few weeks ago. Apparently the guy rooted or tried to root with kingo root. even after a factory reset there is a super user app, but when you open it, says phone not rooted. How can i go about putting the factory firmware on the device and wiping all that crap off?
I used kingo root on my LG Spirit, and then used an app called 'supersume' to get rid of it and install SuperSU instead. You'll find it easily with a Google search, I hope it works for ya! ?
