I saw a report of someone in one of these threads that reported like a stuttering in videos that he believed was related to the qhd screen. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm curious if the guy was hallucinating, or maybe had a faulty unit. I'm on the fence between this and the moto x. I like the aesthetics and lack of hardware buttons on the x, but the specs are a hard thing to look over.....
I haven't noticed anything.
I have both the 2014 X and a Turbo. If you're one of those people who obsess over battery life and are afraid to plug in during the day, the X will make you miserable. It's not terrible battery life for me, but it can't make it through the entire day without a boost charge. The Turbo can easily make it through the day.
For aesthetics and comfort in the hand, you can't beat the X.
Both are great phones, but they're meant did different types of users.

Nope no stutter at all. This baby is buttery smooth. Also the display is quad HD, or wqhd meaning wide quad high definition. qHD stands for Quarter High Definition and is a display resolution of 960x540. WQHD is equivalent to 2,560x1,440. Just so ya know.

QHD is 2560x1440 right? Not just WQHD, and qhd is quarter. Guessing he ment Q not q.
Thanks guys! Yeah I meant quad HD. I have a g2 right now abd the digitizer is going out on it. I had the nexus before this so I haven't had hard buttons since the thunderbolt! I really like the aesthetics of the X but I don't know if I can pick aaesthetics over specs....
No stuttering on video playback for me. Sometimes it hiccups going through menus, I noticed this after having it for like a week or so. It's not bad though and pretty rare.
Haven't seen any stuttering on my unit, it's been a very pleasant media consumption device so far. I've probably streamed over 10 hours of video through Twitch, Youtube, and websites since getting it.
I watch about 2 seasons worth a day on Netflix, YouTube all the time. No stuttering whatsoever. Not even a small pause or lag. My turbo is liquid smooth and solid, and so should yours bottom line.

First Impressions so far are great! I have been eyeing it for quite a while now, but decided to finally get it yesterday. I also bought the Book Cover. The screen is simply amazing. Darkest blacks I have ever seen on an AMOLED screen. And this is coming from an S5 user. Also the speakers are pretty loud and clear for a tablet of this size! Definitely owns the iPad Mini!

I ordered mine this afternoon and it should be here tomorrow. Still hunting down accessories. This will be my first tablet. Looking forward to it; who doesn't like shiny new toys? I did lots of research and this seems to be the best tablet right now. Went with the black.
Any accessories you looking to get for it?
Somehow I'm surprised by how thin it is... I don't think I've owned any portable device that what this thin, tablet or otherwise. It's one thing to read about it or even see it in a pic, but when you finally hold it...
I'm actually not a fan of the bronze trim, though, makes the device look kind of..."blingy"...Like an expensive wristwatch or something. Not sure how to describe it. It's aesthetically pleasing, but seems out of place.
Thing just feels too fragile for me to take it anywhere yet, though. Need to get a good cover/case.
Really impressed with the display.

I didnt think it looks too bad, the bronze fits well with the titanium.
I'm not so impressed
I've had the 8.4 Tab s for a few weeks now and tbh apart from the screen (even that has issues) I'm not overally impressed. The interface is a bit messy and extremely laggy. It stutters when scrolling and quite obviously the Exynos processor isn't up to the job for handling the 1440p screen. The Screen is highly reflective and forget about watching films etc in bright light it is almost impossible.
If they had used the 805 or K1 SOC for overall responsiveness and improved the screen for outside use I would far happier, I also have the Shield Tablet and that is so much faster for almost all tasks it's beyond a joke. Also I still find the Android Tablet interface lacking compared to Apple's. Anyway OP hopefully they will improve the responsiveness with a few updates and I hope you enjoy the tablet.
I just got it yesteday... amaizing... I used many samsung tablets... but this one is sleek and fast... loving it so far.

There seems to be a lot of disagreement here. Some people are saying it is smooth just being stock, some say can be smooth if you use a different launcher or de-bloat the device. I personally haven't noticed any extreme lag; mostly just quarter-second delays when doing something for the first time, e.g. opening the app drawer soon after waking the device up. But I at least saw someone's video of some pretty extreme lag. It's definitely worrying. I also don't have any tablet by which to compare this one, so it's hard for me to really perceive how slow the device might be.
I can't claim to understand the decision to use an 8-core CPU. It sounds fancy. But even the newest PC games utilize only 2-4 cores, so it seems like overkill for a tablet. Maybe I am misunderstanding how those cores are being used in the context of a tablet; perhaps they come into play when you are actually using the split-window functionality?

The SoC has 8 cores in two 4-cores-set, only one set is active on a given time, one set is battery optimized and the other performance oriented, the lagging is prolly caused -apart from bloatware- by the governor, too much to decide, switching from one set of cores to another/plugging-unplugging cores based on demand/scaling the cpu freq. to cope with load. There's much to be tweaked -maybe at the expense of lower battery life-.
I was also looking for the s800 version but given the lack of information/availability I just went on a bought today the Exynos based one. Apart from the lag of the TW interface, I noticed two things I didn't like: my screen has a slight green cast when viewing from an angle, and -I have a very good sight- I notice the pentile/diamond arranging of the pixels at normal viewing distance, just barely but enough to annoy me sometimes ... that's a disappointment, on the Galaxy S4 I can't notice individual pixels even looking for them

I have an S5, but the AMOLED screen on a tablet is Impressive! Samsung has really done it! I tested a 4k video on it and it was SMOOTH!
Df9 debloated and deodexed. Switching launchers to adwex, and latest chrome update, and this thing flies!! Think touchwiz and its new feeds arethe problem.
The screen is pretty reflective. Annoys me a bit.
Swiftkey rocks.
Battery life is decent browsing, sick long with video.
Pretty happy with it so far.
I ownedor a week and returned it ot get this. Pro was a little snappier, battery life wasnt bad.
Love the s screen better and the accessories are a big deal (got the free book case). The pro wont probably get the same love.

I got the T705 (8.4" LTE) this weekend and found it to be a really blinding tablet! The screen and the thin format is absolutely lovely.
So far very happy and even exceeds the SGT 7.7 which I had some years ago.

Lol glad to see some old.mates from 7.7. Tab S 8.4 could be the true successor of that device.
To OP. 1st of all. Congratulations on your new baby. Welcome to the club. Like your observation. The amoled in this unit is superb. Even in total darkness, you wont see any hint of glow or those 'newtonian rings' which plagues alder amoled display. Sometimes. I need to tap on back/menu button just to know that the tablet didn't sleep especially during a blackscreen loading time in some games.
So happy with this unit. Couple it with a tempred glass + samsung bookcase for protection. Got some battery issues at first but managed to resolve it. I paired it with my gear 2 and i couldnt be happier

Hey guys!
I'm currently using a xperia zl. I will get a new phone soon, and I really love the z3 compact.
There's only one thing that bothers me: the display resolution
Is it possible for a normal human being like me to see any difference between my current full hd reaolution and the z3c's hd?
I'm reading a lot on my phone, what about tiny little fonts?
I am also connecting my phone to my tv via mhl. Does the resolution of the phone's display affect the pictire on the tv?
Or am I just a victim of the full (or even quad) hd advertising campaign...?
Thanks for your opinion!

No
Maybe...?
Yes
Yes you're being brainwashed by ads. Companies tend to go for higher and higher resolutions acting as if that really makes a phone better, but it doesn't. Why would such a small device need such a high resolution? It's not like we'll see the difference between 720p and 4k.
On a big screen (monitor) yes! On a phone, HELL NO... It will only deplete your battery faster.
About your TV resolution... well I think it depends how old your TV is. If my mind serves me right, TV's didn't had that great resolutions.

No, you will notice no difference.
Also some big TV´s had in the past "only" 720p....
720p is full enough and will save the battery comparing to FullHD
On a screen of this size I think even 720p is more than sufficient. Even on a 32" TV your naked eyes will not be able to differentiate 720p from 1080p from a certain distance. The advantage in terms of battery saving is huge and I really am happy that this phone came with only 720p.

Like everyone else said, 720p is just perfect for a phone of this size. 1080p or higher would has been an "overkill" at the expense of battery life.
As for the TV output it depends on the resolution/quality of the original content. If you are just generally mirroring your phone screen it will have a resolution of 720p on the TV (which itself is a very decent quality, most content on TV is 720p anyways). But playing back a high quality 1080p or 4K (the Sony Z3 Compact supports 4K video recording) video from phone, it will be displayed as Full HD on the TV.
http://wolfcrow.com/blog/notes-by-dr-optoglass-the-resolution-of-the-human-eye/
The most important thing when talking about ppi and which no one of the marketing departments mentions of course, is the viewing distance.
This article is very clear, for a normal human eye 720p at a viewing distance of 30 cm which is quite normal for a phone is sufficient. So, 1080p is already for most of us overkill and everything above pure male cow excrement.
No, No, & No lol. I enjoy that some companies are trying to get rid of this ridiculous trend (SONY, Motorola, etc.) I'm sure there are more trying to. We could probably have had 3-4 days battery by now if people weren't obsessed with buying into expensive power hungry components.
Guess ads are to blame too, thanks Samsung. Cough *Galaxy Notes -__- nothing wrong with a Note but the screen res is overkill to the max. Anyway rant done, enjoy your amazing battery life you buy it because you didn't get sucked into buying an unnecessary big display.
Ok, ok, I understood...
Thank you all for your opinions and links!
You could probably tell side-by-side. You won't care.
Side by side with my one m7 full hd and i can t tell the difference.
Hi
In my opinion it's all about compromise and priorities. Personally I have just moved from an LG G3 (Quad HD display) to the Z3 Compact.
Side by side the LG G3 really looks the business - in fact it is startling. But, the Z3C has a good screen, is much more pocketable, has brilliant battery life (I used to carry a spare with the LG just in case though never actually needed it - came close though), and outdoors in bright sunlight the Sony is much better.
So for me the compromises favoured the Sony.
As ever it's just my opinion but I hope it helps
I absolutely hate the new qhd screens. I think its a waste of resources, battery and processing power. Im not too familiar with amoled screens. Im wondering if they look good at resolutions other than native, such as how a crt monitor is, and not like a lcd which looks horrible at anything other than its native res.
If this was true we could just run the phone at 1080p res and save a ton of resources instead of pushing all those pixles that we dont need.
All modern displays need to be run at a native resolution to make it look good. Old CRTs could change the pixels they were projecting onto the screen which allowed it to do true resolution shifts. With modern displays those pixels aren't projected onto glass. They are hard set. Consequently, you can't do it with LCD, AMOLED, LED, or Plasma. 1080p ain't happening.
However, we theoretically could push it to 720p since that is one quarter of it's native resolution. That would just mean that four pixels would be grouped together as one. I expect it won't take long for mods to make their way out for that and it could have a significant impact on battery life. Hopefully it won't screw anything up. I've heard that 720p mods on the LG G3 have screwed with some of the stock LG apps.

Why not just buy a 1080p phone then? The Huawai Ascend Mate 7 might be kind of what you're looking for.
It's got a 6" 1080p screen, metal construction, a huge (4100mah) battery, finger print scanner, etc. It's also roughly the same physical size or a little smaller than the N6 and similar in price I believe.
Overall the reviews have been fairly strong too. It might be worth a look.

Need a nexus device. Im tired of being held hostage with updates by the manufactuers for updates. They either wont fix something dumb that a dev can fix in 2 seconds, or they completely abandon the device after a year and you will never see the next version of android. I need to keep a phone that has massive dev support.
Plus that phone specifically doesn't suit me. No front facing stereo speakers, no amoled, no wireless charging, no stock android, and some weird processor that I don't trust lol
Does it actually make a difference to change the resolution? You still have to light up ALL the pixels.

Not on an AMOLED display. Backlighting is done on a per-pixel basis. That's why blacks are so dark, because the pixels aren't even on.

Change the display ... really? come on, if you don't want QHD then just don't buy the phone.
Have you tried buying the nexus 5…? ?
Coming from someone with a g3, there are plenty of things you can do to make the phone snappy without having to gimp the resolution. The phone can handle it, just buy a portable battery if you are really worried.

Absolutely it will. QHD isn't just about what the screen putting it out. It's the processor calculating what goes on that display. You are right that the power the screen consumes doesn't change. However, the processor now only has to calculate 1/4th of the graphics it used to. When you consider how much power is needed for graphics calculations on the processor, that is a MAJOR savings and can really add up over time.
Major? Like he said you still have to fire up all the pixels. It has always been my understanding that pushing the sheer number of pixels is what eats battery. I agree that it's overkill for such a small screen but regardless it's here, you can either but it or not.
on my g3, outside of playing games, reducing the resolution did not increase my performance or battery life.
Hello guys. I really don't know which one to pick this year, the S10 or S10E. My main concern is the display, S10E has about 440 PPI (since its FHD), while the S10 display has 550 (WQHD). Do you guys think our eye can actually notice the difference while, for example, watching some high definition videos, or even just surfing? I really like the 10e concept (no edge screen which i hate) but I'm actually worried I'd miss a little quality on the screen. I read some articles about the way the human eye actually notices the difference in PPI but I'm curious about your opinions. Thanks!
No, you cannot tell the difference. So much so that all Samsung devices come set to 1080 out of the box. If you want full res, you have to go change it
FWIW, I went from the Galaxy S9 to the Pixel 3 which is a pretty similar comparison in PPI. I could tell the difference. Reading text in particular. I am VERY nearsighted, however, with outstanding "near" reading vision. I think this will depend on the person.

I tried but even if i have a far from perfect eyesight, I couldnt really tell the difference.
Any other opinions guys?
You won't be able to tell.
I have a Note8 that I run at the 1440p WQHD resolution.
If I move it down to the 1080p, the text becomes slightly "thicker", but after a few minutes of using it you cannot tell a difference.
If you move it to the 720p, it is noticeable and very, very "chunky" and you will continue to notice it.
However, this is because the display is optimized for the 1080p but runs the 1440p very well, too.
I am buying an S10e because you will not be able to tell the difference on the device. I went to Best Buy and inspected the S10e here -- it looks GREAT and all fears are done away with.
Samsung is simply reducing the "waste" of the 1440p to make the phone less expensive and more compact.
Honestly, I am fine with it.
The iPhone XR is something like 720p and it looks far worse than the iPhone XS, but the S10e is back up on par with all of the latest Samsung models.
had a look at some demo units yesterday and i noticed a little difference. the s10/+ where on full resolution compared to the s10e i was able to see a difference in text like stated before. but i had to look very closly.
i would say i you use the phone for video consumption most of the time i would advise for the bigger and better screen. but on the other hand the smaller 1080 screen of the s10e should be better on the battery too.
i preorderd the standard s10. from what i saw yesterday i really like what they did with the s10e alle the important specs. but again the s10+ would be the best screen for 4k hdr video consumption imho. im still a litte torn between the models

If you are wanting to get into VR, you will ABSOLUTELY 100% see a difference. 1440p on my s8 seems a slightly pixelated in VR. Which I will say that samsung vr is by far the best vr experience on the mobile market.
Other than that, couldnt tell the difference between 1080 and 1440 on my s8.
I think in all the latest phones you can spot ppi differences if you are a hawk.
I was happy with the 1080p screen on my OP6T so I'm confident the display on my S10E will be awesome.

Thanks!

I picked S10e and the main reason was the size, where S10 is a bit taller. The screen should be pretty fine. I don't think users will be able to see the PPI difference. If iPhone Xr users are buying this phone which has 326 PPI, then S10e is much better

I really leaned towards the S10e for nothing else but the flat screen. I eventually decided on the S10 though. The S10+ is approaching the size of a tablet and I couldn't handle that.

I did like and want a flat screen phone for some time. In the pictures S10e looks pretty good and the design language a bit different from S8/9. Regardless, I am sure any of S10 would be good as it is 10th anniversary for Samsung and they can't afford to fail its customers!
The bigger screens are probably better if you watch a ton of video, but I don't like watching videos on my phone.
All I can say is this -- your S10e screen will be better than my Note8 display (which is great at 1440p) and since you have a screen that is literally as good as it can get at 1080p, you won't notice. You will never tell the slightest difference.
I could not really tell at Best Buy, but I think both models (S10+ and S10e I had side by side) were both on 1080p software setting. However, they both looked GREAT and no "Chunky" text like when I set my Note8 to 720p.
It will also mean that 3100 mah battery will go a long way.
Any major differences in battery consumption or phone running more slow between the two? The real difference I can see between the two is text clarity which for my eyes is huge lol.
Thanks!
Don't think there's any real negligible battery drain between the two...
Battery life is equal. Now, things were different with older phones like the LG G2 and LG G3. The latter was the 1st 1440P phone on the market, which led to poor battery. We are well past that period. Note 4 uses 1440P and was regarded as a battery champ.
With the S10 you'll lose more battery from poor signal than resolution.
Awesome thank you. I wonder why Samsung chooses to set default at 1080 instead QHD?
1080p because green subpixel life. With QHD, every green subpixel have to burn brighter.
Amoled pentile uses twice more smaller green subpixels than red and blue.
I plan to keep this phone longer than any prior phone I've owned. If FHD helps my screen last longer then I may very well use this setting.
Playing between the two, I can definitely see a difference in small text clarity tho. I wish I can un-see the text clarity that WQHD brings lol.

You've paid a small fortune for the phone, use WQHD lol. The screen will be fine.
This is very true! Lol
