Can no longer install from "Unknown Sources" - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is probably something I've done that is really stupid but I can't figure it out. My Nexus 6 is completely stock. Just got it, haven't unlocked the bootloader and haven't rooted it.
I have gone to the Security settings and enabled "Unkonwn Sources". I have even install Fdroid after doing so.
I'm now trying to install other apps (Amazon app store, and others from fdroid) and I can't.
It opens the install screen, tells me all the permissions the app will use, and gives me the "Cancel" and "Install" buttons. However, I cannot press the "Install" button. The cancel buttons works fine, but not the install button.
Anyone know what I've done wrong?
Thanks in advance folks.

Are you using some kind of screen filter application? Try switching the phone to landscape and tap all areas of "Install"
If you're using a screen filter application, disable it and then try again.

In my experience, this is usually related to third party screen related apps that control screen brightness. In my case, lux creates this behavior, and needs to be disabled to install things. If you don't have a third party app like this installed, try temporarily disabling ambient display or auto brightness.

Thank you both for your answers.
"Lux" was the culprit. Darn.
I got really tired of pressing "Install". Did it so many times it wouldn't surprise me if there was a dent in my screen, lol.

You know the Amazon app store can also be accessed from the regular Amazon app, right? No need to sideload the Amazon App Store apk anymore

Unable to install non-market apps

I have a stock Bionic and lately I'm having an issue where I can no longer install non-market apps such as the Amazon app store. I do have the option checked to allow non-market apps in the settings and I've tried toggling it as well. When I try to do the install it goes to the package installer screen where it shows the required permissions and prompts you to press install or cancel. When I press install nothing happens, no error messages or anything, it just stays on the package installer screen. I had this same issue recently when installing apps from the Amazon app store and reinstalling the app store seemed to fix the issue, but tonight after I removed the app store I wasn't able to reinstall it. Any suggestions?
The only thing out of the ordinary I can think of that might be related is that I typically purchase each daily Amazon free app, and I let it download but I don't always install them. Not sure if that's causing some type of issue with a buildup of pending apps in the install queue or what.
I'm able to install Market apps with no problem. Thx!

I found out the issue was being caused by the app "Screen Filter." I use it at night because even at the lowest brightness the screen is too bright for me. As soon as I disabled the filter I was able to install apps again - weird eh? Anyone use a similar app to dim their screen that doesn't have these side effects?

Wow!!! I was having the same issue and by searching the forum I found this thread, and was able to fix the problem by toggling my screen filter off....so weird, but think you so much!!!

[Q] HTC One AT&T - Can't install 3rd party apps even when enabled in settings

Ok so this is weird as hell, and i've already called HTC about this and they provided a little bit of help.
First, this is my first official Android handset (Why the hell did I wait so long omg?) after kicking Apple to the curb, so I am still learning all the tricks and shortcuts, but I have a fairly good knowledge as to how the OS works now.
My Issue is I am unable to install 3rd party apps. I have the APK downloaded, I have the option in settings to allow 3rd party apps to install, and when I try to install it takes me to the install screen showing me what the app will have access to, and has cancel and install at the bottom. Cancel works, as well as show info, but the install button does nothing. I've tried from the download section, as well as ASTRO File Manager.
HTC Mention double checking to make sure third party app install is enabled (I can't even get to the install screen otherwise so it obviously is) and they mentioned to do a soft-restart by holding down the power button until it completely reboots.
Here is the kicker, after doing the soft-restart for the first time, I was able to install the Humble Indie Bundle Beta App. Worked perfectly fine. But now that I have downloaded the games from that App, I am back to the same issue before where I can't install the APK's and the soft-restart isn't fixing the issue.
I've goggled the crap out of this and haven't come across really anything like this, except some mention that AT&T Blocks third party apps, but it looks like that was on older HTC phones, and since I was able to install 1 third party app, I don't think that's the case. Any help would be appreciated!

If you can't install 3rd party apps, after having checked the option in settings, remove the "Google Settings" app, and then run your installs. If you are using a new install for the first time, pick Android Installer and not Verify and Install to avoid issues. Scumbag Google.
Re-install Google Settings at your own risk afterwards.

Google recently installed a new "installer" package from the store. I think it was called "verify and install". Anyway, the first time I tried to install from the Amazon store, it asked me which installer to use - Android or the new google installer. I chose the second program (always). After that my programs would not install. I had to remove that program and then the next time I made sure that I selected the default Android installer.
I don't know where the new installer came from. I didn't ask for it to be installed.
Anyway, check your apps list and see if that is installed.

Just searched all apps installed for both install and verify. There is nothing under verify, and install comes up with Certificate Installer DemoFloPackage Installer and Package Installer, all with android icon's, so they appear to be default stuff. I'll definitely keep looking though, thank you for the tip!
Edit: Your suggestion game me the idea to see if there was another installer application on the appstore that might work. I tried Easy Installer and it still just installs using the regular (or I suppose default) installer, which leads me back to the same problem =(
Do you have any apps like Lux Autobrightness or screen filter running or similar? If you do, that is your culprit. Those apps act as an overlay to your screen (that's how they adjust brightness) and as a security feature the install button is disabled when an overlay app is being used to prevent an overlay app from being able to hit the install button. It works after a reboot because the app has not yet started running.

I do have twilight installed (Like F.Lux) but it looks like stevedebi's original assessment was correct. The app is "Google Settings" attached is a screen cap of the culprit.
I unlocked my bootloader to install cynogenmod (decided against it) and when I went to re-install all the apps, the "Android Installer" and "Verify and Install" option came up, and once I saw the icon was the same as google settings, I opened it up and there was the verify options down at the bottom.

Thank you for this info! Completely forgot about this and was getting frustrated when the install button wasn't working..
I tried the whole "deleting the screen filter" app thing. It works momentarily after I "soft" reset my phone, but only for one install.
Every time, I have to reset my phone, so something else is in the way.
My phone is not rooted, if that helps at all. And it's an AT&T galaxy s2.

[Q] How-To Install Apps?

Hey guys, I have my new z1 and have been trying to install a few games and apps using default file commander, I have checked "allow unknown sources" but when I try to install any app, the "install" button does not get pressed is there any special setting for it? if so how please do tell me, thanks!
What do you mean by "the install button does not get pressed"? Is it greyed out?
Tried using a 3rd party installer app?

I am pretty sure what it is, I had same issue and took me 2 days to figure it out , this will happen when you're using any kind of app like "Filter Your Screen" to avoid the yellow hue, turn it off and install the app you're wanting too, it will get installed but when it's turned on you will be unable to install anything and to install other apps make sure to turn the app off, cheers!

"Couldn't add widget" in app switcher?

Anybody else see that? Seems odd that there's a widget in the app switcher.
same here
I don't have a solution, I just wanted you to know that you're not the only one seeing that.
That's the Google search widget. Haven't had that problem though.

can confirm that it is the Google search, if you have frozen it or uninstalled it you will get this error, once I installed google search again the error was gone.
That's actually a pretty convenient feature. Better than the swipe up thing IMO.

Same problem but I dont have it disabled or anything. I use it all the time but it's just missing from there
I had this too (and have never disabled Google Search)
A simple reboot into safe mode the then boot back to normal fixed it.
Press power button then long press on "Power Off" to access safe mode.

That worked
Just tried on my nexus 5 which had the same issue and it only seems to work if you actually open "Recent Apps" once you are in Safe Mode.
I think it is a profile error as the problem appeared on a brand new Nexus 6 after "restoring" from my Nexus 5 config.
Great!
Starting in Safe mode, opening the recent apps and rebooting fixed it for me as well - many thanks! :good::good:
Try using Gravitybox.
Gravitybox > Miscellaneous Tweaks > Search bar visibility
Set to Hide and remove space.
That will get rid of that annoyance.
Reinstall clean master
Uninstall clean master from settings > apps, then install it from play store. Worked for me.

Super user stops working

I've waiting to see if anyone else is having this issue before posting but haven't seen it. I've been having this problem since I got the 6 and rooted ect, even on stock Rom. After some time, a day or less, when a new app prompts su for permission, I can't select allow. Also I can not longer side load an app. When it shows cancel or install, I can't select install, only cancel. Weirdest thing. I'm on my 3rd Rom, and it just started.
