Is this normal or a defect? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up a Moto x (2014) and have noticed that headphones do not sit flush when connected to the phone and stick out a bit.
Is this normal or have I got a defect?
For reference I've tried different headphones and also tried the same headphones on an iPhone 6 plus, Galaxy s5, note 3, tab s and iPad 4 and it sits flush with all of those devices.
I've tried pushing down hard but gave up as I obviously don't want to break anything.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine sits high enough that you can see some metal on the plug, but the sound is just fine.

It depends on the headphone casing but yeah probably. I have some Samsung headphones and quite a bit of the metal shows. It's mainly because the stereo port isn't recessed like in other phones.

Thanks a lot for the replies.
That's put my ocd to rest, I'd assume it's normal then.

[Q] Standard Earbuds not compatible with my Ears

So I just got my Nexus S yesterday, I love it, but... right about now, I'm feeling extremely dumb. Either that, or I have a horrible ear canal for listening to music.
I've tried everything to get the earbuds that came with the Nexus S to stay in my ear, but it just won't work. I've even watched YouTube videos to figure out how to get it to fit my ear. Something's wrong. No matter how deep in the ear canal I stick the earbuds, they won't stay for longer than 5 seconds. The slightest movement causes them to fall off.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this a common problem?
Is there a way to reduce the radius on the earbuds so I can try fitting them better in my ear? I really want to start using these standard headphones. They look extremely nice, and the rubber tips really enhance the sound, at least for the few seconds I manage to hold it in my ear. I don't want to go back to using my crappy Motorola ones. Help!
I was like this at the start when i first started to use in-ear earphones. I had to kinda force them into my ears. It was annoying at first but now its natural. Dunno if you are the same as me though
same problem here! I cant figure those damn things out lol. I had to go back to my iphone headset.
What headphone models have been comfortable for you?

Had this same problem with the last few handsets I've had. The solution I found was to get some of those foam pads for the earbuds. The friction between the foam and your skin keeps the earbuds solidly in your ear. Without the foam, my earbuds constantly fell out which drove me insane.
i have small ears too, i hate ear buds headphones as it causes a lot of pain after 15 min when using over sized ear buds, which are "normal" sizes for big ear peoples
very few products over mini ear buds (normal sizes for us), like a couple of Sony Bluetooth headsets i found in the past.
so i always use headsets that have an ear hook
I find the cable causes the most problems, If I have the cable exiting downwards, I cannot push the earbud in far enough. The only way to get a good fit is to turn them upside down and have the cables looped over the top of my ears.

Do you mean those black foam pads that used to come with iPods? Do you know where I can find one nowadays? Or is there an easy way to improvise?
And thanks for the response guys, assured me that I'm not the only one to have problems with earbuds.
If you're using in-ear headphones there are 2 solutions:
Comply Foam Tips - Super comfortable but a little bit too expensive for me considering you have to change them every month (or two).
Sony Hybrid Tips Comes in 4 different sizes so you can mix-and-match if your ear canals are not the same size. Very comfortable and durable.
NOTE: There are some "Replacement Sony Silicone Ear Tips" on eBay, most (or all) of them are not the genuine ones. Quality wise is OK but the material is harder than original Sony Hybrid Tips so they may not as fit and comfortable as the real ones.
I thought it was just me I'm living with em until i have enough cash to buy a nice new pair of cans.
Sent from my Google.
you can get some rubber ear bud, the one that came standard is too big for me, so i got some sony ones, they are quite expensive, but you can get the non sony one's, works just as good, but much cheaper.
non sony one set USD 0.64
sony from most country set of 3 (S.M.L) USD 10
sony from japan two set either XS, SS, S, M, L and other sizes in between USD 5.75
Try
I am an earbud addict, try these J3Ms: http://earbudreview.org/earbud-reviews/jbuds-j3j3m-earbud-review/ They come with different earbud pieces so if you have a big ear (it seems like), then you can swap them out for the big earbud pieces.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but is there anything I can do with these default ones?

Headphone Jack Problem???

Picked up the HTC Vivid yesterday, came from the Galaxy SII(gave to fiance) has anyone else noticed a problem with the headphone jack in that you have the really PRESS the headphone jack in, then if you just slightly twist the connector it will tell the device you've disconnected the head phones and disables the music?
This has happened with multiple headphones and is a major downer for me as I am very active when I have my headphones in, mostly this will become a problem while riding my motorcycle to work.
How are your headphone jacks????
Mine works fine. I'd say get a replacement...

I've had my Vivid since launch and haven't noticed any issues with the headphone jack yet. You might take it back to the store, compare against the floor model, and if yours definitely has an issue then show the AT&T employee and they should swap you out for a new one.
I have a specific pair of headphones that goes in the jack very easily until the last bit, then I have to push pretty hard.
I have not experienced any disconnect when twisting the connector so far. That would seem to be a hardware problem worthy of a return.
ok, I'm slightly relieved by this, I will drop by a store on the way home to check it out. Thanks all!
yea.. mine also seems very tight when i was testing the FM radio.. luckily i never use headphones so i dont really care.
my headphone jack has problem, gonna see about a replacement
otherwise, its an awesome phone, very similar to evo3d/4g with the obvious differences.
My headphone jack is very tight. Love that factor. I use standard iPhone headsets. It seems to hold the headset in tight so as to not lose connect unless it is wanted.
Tightness with HTC earphones
I'm using the earphones that came with my HTC HD2. While testing the Vivid FM radio, I realized I was getting sound in only one earphone. I pushed on the plug and suddenly got sound in the other. I removed the earphones and re-inserted them. I could definitely tell an initial stop and then a second audible click when it went all the way in.
checked 4 different display models in 2 different stores, and had a guy go through a half dozen new phones in the box and all of them had headphone jack problems.
For what it's worth, I've discovered different headphones make the difference.
My Sennheiser canal earbuds disconnect easily if I'm not careful. My Phillips wrap-arounds are rock solid on the same phone.
Tested with my wife's Vivid and had the same results.

I have exactly the same result, have 3 headphones and one of them getting pulled out a bit easily, while other 2 works perfectly fine.
Gotta say, this is getting a little frustrating. Who's got a decent pair of canal earbuds that they like AND that don't disconnect and stop my music every time I put my phone back in my jacket pocket.
This is a little stupid really. I'm not using cheap headphones, and I don't have any problems with any other phone, my nook tablet, etc. A crap headphone jack on a phone like this is highly disappointing.
I have some house of Marley jammin buds and some Skullcandy FMJs that work fine. Only ones I have had trouble with are the blackberry ones.

Mine has the same issue. I do remember that my son's HTS came with headphones but they were the kind with the microphone and had 4 contacts on the connector instead of 3 that a regular set of headphones have. I will come home and will try my son's headphones to see if that is the reason.
Headphone jacks should be a known technology. I've used my Sennheiser headphones in a ton of devices, and never had an issue till my brand new phone.
That being said, yes, the phone has the ability to take an extended jack for microphone compatibility, so I ordered a well reviewed cheap pair of phones that happened to be on sale today for half off and include the in-line microphone. ($10 bucks, yes indeed!)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826735013
Just be sure to order today and use the promo code. I'll post once I have them how they stack up and if I still see the disconnect issue.
What I've noticed is that when you twist the headphone jack, it'll come out a little bit. The headphones with shorter jacks that are almost completely concealed in the phone will stay connected still, because it won't pop out far enough. The headphones with jacks that are slightly larger disconnect more easily, since more of it sticks out. Not really sure if that's just coincidence or not, but it's just what I've been seeing.
Have some problem here with my Shure headphones. The quick and easy fix that seem to work well for me is to use a different (short) extension cable that snaps in well to the jack...
...having said that, still sux to have paid $200 for a high-end phone and get such a crappy jack.
Count me in as someone with headset jack problems on their Vivid too...
My Sennheiser HD280's slip in and out of the jack, causing it to think it has a microphone connected (and pausing playback)
My car's aux-in cable just won't stay connected-- there's plenty of friction, but just rotating the cable alone causes it to think the headphones have vanished.
My cheapo headphones work, so long as I keep the cable perfectly still and allow no rotation/pull on the cable.
This is rather frustrating, I must admit.
I'm going to go to the ATT store tomorrow and see if their demo unit has this same issue also.
(Side note: MHL doesn't work on my phone either, but I'm not sure if that's a side effect of the way I rooted my phone)
i noticed this problem with my 3.5mm in my car. I was stumped because my sony canal earbuds were working perfectly and my gaming headset (turtle beach hpx) was working perfectly as well (the jack on this is pretty big). I went to radioshack and tried a different 3.5mm and it fit perfectly. Im guessing certain plug-ins dont work for some reason.

Armbands

So, I exercise a lot and when I run I like to have my music and mytracks running. I also cannot wear headphones when I run due to the fact they are not allowed on post(I am in the Army). So, my question is, has anybody purchased an armband for the Droid 4? And if so, what are your experiences with it? When you sweat, does the phone stay dry? Can you hear the speaker when you play music and its on your arm? Is it easy to touch and manipulate the screen? Thanks for any input you all might have.
Chad.

Scosche soundKASE
Hey Ghost, I recently purchased a Scosche soundKASE from Amazon was a little worried at first it may not fit as at the time there was only one user review stating they also owned a Droid 4.
Been running with it for about 3 weeks now and haven't had a single issue, armband stays tight, I can still hear the speaker nice a loud, able to navigate the screen just fine.
The fit was a bit snug at first but now the case has stretched comfortably to where I can slide the phone in and out with ease, but it does not bounce or otherwise feel as though it will fall out on it's own.
The obvious limitations are sometimes the sound can be a little muffled depending on the placement on the arm, volume rocker buttons are mostly inaccessible but if you push on the sides of the case you can usually get it to register.
It does fog up a bit every now and then, but it has never affected my phone in any way.
Very happy with this purchase, works well with the Droid 4.
I cant post links yet so just search Amazon for "Scosche soundKASE - Android" it should be around $18.00 with like 4 reviews.

3.5 Jack

Hi Guys,
Just got ROG 2 yesterday... While testing all the spec and accessories, i felt that my 3.5 jack port is not that good. Every headset that i tried was very loose and easy dropped.
Am i the one feeling like this or do any one face the same problem?
Maybe a little once it's in, but getting it in is tight! 1st time I tried, I use Bluetooth ones mainly....
Mine has a solid connection. not loose at all. After plugging in my earbuds, I can suspend the phone by the cable and it doesn't come undone. I can even jiggle it with it only secured by the 3.5 mm jack. When inserting the cable, i can feel it click solidly.

Nice to hear that, but i have raised PUR. Planning to fix it.
Yea the headphone jack on this phone is super tight compared to the LGs and Samsungs I've had.

maybe check other jacks, some are tight. worst case scenario is you have a defective one.
Mine is fine I use it every weekday when traveling to and from work. No complaints here
No issues here also. Tested with Oneplus Bullets, Audiotechnica M50x and some cheap FiiO headphones.

Accessories the buds do not stay in the ear

Hi,
I have a problem with the buds pro, thet don't stay in my ear, they fall out even though I'm still and sitting .
does anyone else have the same problem? is there a solution?
Thanks
Have you tried switching to the larger size eartips that come with the buds? Another option is to find a 3rd party eartip that better fits your ears, for example -- https://www.amazon.com/SpinFit-CP100-M-Patented-Silicone-Replacement/dp/B01B793SLU
The trick is to give them a twist when you insert them into your ear, this helps them dig into the right position.
And as above you may need to experiment with the different size eartips.
How to wear your Samsung earbuds
If your Samsung earbuds don’t seem to fit correctly, simply change the earbud tips and wingtips for new ones. Your earbuds come with different sized earbud tips and wingtips so you can get the ideal fit for your ears. You should also make sure that you are wearing the earbuds properly.

Actually this is why I prefer the Galaxy buds live, because they sit in your ear without going into the canal, and I think they sound fantastic. also, if you do any kind of sports, such as running, you don't get the 'boom boom' sound every time your foot hits the ground, which drives me crazy about in-canal earbuds

Yeah you definitely need to screw them in
Not so with the Pro's except for sound Q.
I concerned about fit as well. For some they may not work well.
You can also go with foam tips which may work better. Sammy is allegedly considering releasing a foam tip version of the silicon.
I'm considering upgrading to the Pro's from the plus.

No wing tips with the Pro's...
Foam, foam, foam. I can't stick silicone tips. Itchy, weird pressure and that odd seal break when you chew or smile. I just can't get on with them.
I've been using foam on IEMs for 13 years now and the benefits are so great compared to silicone - great seal, comfy, better isolation.
I have some of these coming tomorrow as saw them recommended:

Hopefully these will do the trick until comply come up with the goods.
Got my buds pro today and they sound great, but that silicone.... No good, just no good
thank you all.
i have tried all 3 sizes but they are too big.
i can use them without eartips but so they are too small.
I need something between the smaller eartips and nothing.
I will try with the memory foam and

Try putting them in loosely at first, don't twist.
Allow a minute or two for them to warm up then twist them home.
A small amount of coconut oil in the ear canal helps them seat and prevent swimmer's ear.

I'm actually in the process of returning the Buds Live I just got with the promo because they won't stay in my ears. I tried both sets of wingtips, got the silicon sleeves from Sammy - nothing worked. They stay in for a little bit but eventually fall out with movement, chewing, etc. Was planning on upgrading to the Pros instead, but now this thread has me contemplating that!
With the silicone they stay in fine for me using largest size tip, it's just the preference thing of silicone vs foam that is my personal issue.
So I have no problem with fit and stability, just the comfort and preference factor of foam
The issue with the pro's is that you can't easily fit 3rd party tips because of the oval shape and extremely short nozzle ... so unless samsung make some better wing'd tips (would love them) they are how they are i think
One of my buds wont stay in either. Keeps falling off no matter what The other day hit my guinea pig on the head
I found even the large tips were a bit loose.
I've ordered some SpinFit cp360 tips instead, but would prefer some foam tips.
I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on those replacement tips @heartyparty
Do they fit well without pulling off too easily and do they fit the charging case?
Just tried out the linsoul foam tips I ordered.
Nice blue colour, wide fitting hole so easy to push in to an oval and slide on to the buds pro nozzle.
Feels pretty secure.
And they seem quite good, definitely giving me a comfier fit and better isolation.
Fit in the case ok, slightly pushing the buds up a fraction but that will settle as they compress over time. Not affecting charging.
Only thing is that they are not a particularly 'tall' tips if that makes sense.
I would prefer something a little taller (longer?) to sit further in my ear canal. As it is the body of the buds are rubbing a bit on my ear and also the oval nozzle section is pretty wide so slightly uncomfortable at first until you get the fit just right. Longer foamies would allow that deeper fit and give a bit of space to keep the wide nozzle bit just a little further out your ear and also stop the buds catching the ear to.
Pretty much nit picking here though. As a 3rd party tip not designed for the buds, they do a decent enough job, thumbs up!
I found these ones earlier which say they're designed for the buds pro. But they only seem to be available on Amazon US
