Looking to buy a new handheld and performance-wise moto x look ok, so
I have picked the 2013 model to be robust enough for me, so is there any reason I should buy the 1053 for a peace in mind or can I go for the cheaper 1058 ? I live in the uk
It depends.
The XT1053 supports: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 1700/850/1900 and LTE bands 2 , 4 and 17
The XT1058 supports: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 850/1900 and LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7 and 17
So the differences are that the XT1053 supports wcdma 1700 and the XT1058 supports LTE band 5 and 7.
Which one supports the most frequencies your carrier uses?
Next there is SIM unlock and Bootloader Unlock...
The XT1053 is SIM Unlocked out of the box. No need to buy a code. While the XT1053 ships with its bootloader LOCKED out of the box, it can be unlocked, the code is available for free from Moto's web site.
The XT1058 is usually SIM LOCKED so you need to buy a code from the internet. While the XT1058 also ships bootloader LOCKED out of the box, Moto only has the codes for the non-ATT USA XT1058 availabe on their web site. IF you get an ATT USA XT1058, you can't get the bootloader unlock code from Moto. As of TODAY (when I'm typing this) the only option to bootloader unlock the ATT USA XT1058 is IF the phone has never been upgraded past 4.4.2, and you can use JCASE's Sunshine tool/app.
Unlocking the bootloader is only important if you want to root and/or flash custom roms.

I am going to buy a Moto X in the US and use it abroad. May I get some suggestion about which version to buy other than the Dev Ed because I managed to get a promotion code which can only be used for MotoMaker ones.
Is there any version that is unlocked for sim cards other than the carrier indicated?
which version is easier to root and unlock the BL of Moto X?
Thank you very much.

I'm going to Mexico in January and I have the Verizon Dev edition; as far as I know, it has the same internals as the standard moto x, only the bootloader being unlockable is different. It's my understanding that Verzion phones come carrier unlocked, and the new ones (including the x) have gsm bands as well as cdma and LTE bands. My mexican (telcel) sim card shipped today so I should find out soon. These are the bands included in the verizon moto x:
Network: LTE, CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
LTE B13/4 700/1700
Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS( 850/900/1900/2100), HSDPA 42.2 Mbps (Category 20), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps
As long as your overseas carrier offers one of those you should be fine. Also, if you're about to buy, I'd hold off for a week if you can. I hear wood backs are coming to moto maker.

Have you confirmed if it worked or not? I am thinking of sending a few to Honduras to run on Claro and it looks like they should be able to get nano sims there since Claro offers the iPhone 5S. They currently all have Droid 3 phones.
I've got an ATT Moto X, proparly unlocked; works fine in Europe, w/o any issues! Few ATT spamware (phonebook, backup) disabled, everything else is just fine pure Android experience. Got mine from Ebay.
Best to get the T-Mobile Moto X. Why is because it comes unlocked for GSM networks right out of the box and furthermore, it doesn't even have a carrier logo on the back.
I got one and its happily working fine in Malaysia with no network issues.

I believe the T-Mobile one is the best global solution as xylencia mentioned, it comes carrier unlocked (not bootloader unlocked, as some confuse the difference). I just took my moto to Canada and got a nano Sim from telus, paid $30 for a month and its working great.
I moved away from Verizon because their phones don't work on any other network (unless things have changed recently)

Verizon LTE devices come sim unlocked for GSM carriers. It's part of an agreement with the FCC. You can use it stateside and globally.
T-Mobile or the Dev gsm is best for travel other than for Korea and Japan and even then you will have 3g

Cool. Moreover, I actually used LiveChat with a Motorola rep and she confirmed that only T-Mobile's version comes carrier unlocked out of the box. Even though NO CONTRACT options are also available with the other carriers.

Correct me if I am wrong, Europe uses 4G band 7 right? Which GSM Dev Moto X doesn't support.

That sucks. I am pretty sure T-Mobile S4 had band 7... ..I checked Nexus 5 also doesn't have it.
Well if u really need LTE on 2600, just buy the ATT version and have it unlocked by a third party. Probably cost u something like ten bucks.

Now is not the only model at the moment. European Moto X (I don't know model number yet) supports band 7 too

But ATT doesn't have 1700. All Motos missing something.....sucks
Hi everyone, I'm thinking about getting a moto x but I dont know which carrier version to pick.
I currently have a droid 4 on verizon and I'm looking to ditch verizon in favor of straight talk in june.
My issue is that they're having a sale on the moto maker site and I dont know weather to choose a Verizon one to use untill my plan stops or if I should get the T-Mobile or at&t version so it will work better with straight talk when the time comes to change.
Something to consider is that 1. T-Mobile has pretty spotty coverage in my area 2. I dont think the moto x can be activated as cdma for straight talk.
Some other questions I have are 1. will a T-Mobile version work just fine on at&t? 2. are there any reasons I should pick an at&t branded one? 3. Are there any reasons i shouldn't pick the verizon version?
thank you for your time
Correct me on this if needed, but all Verizon phones are sim unlocked and work with GSM per FCC agreement. So you could get that version, but I would check it first when receiving it to see if it work with a GSM sim, if not you can get an RMA for a refund. The Verizon edition have the 3G bands to work with ATT, it lacks T-Mobile AWS 3G band (1700). Also it only support LTE band 13, it doesn't support LTE bands 2, 4 or 17 that come with the GSM unlocked version, so you will not get LTE on ATT or T-Mobile.
There is zero reason to get the ATT version what so ever, none, zilch. It's sim locked (though you could ask ATT to unlock it I guess), cannot unlock bootloader. The T-Mobile version is actually the unlocked version, it support every bands required by ATT, both 3G and LTE. T-Mobile version have unlocked sim and bootloader, doesn't have carrier logo nor carrier bloatwares.
Then there is the unlocked GSM Developer Edition which allow you to unlock bootloader without losing warranty, is similar to regular T-Mobile unlocked edition, except that it lacks T-Mobile AWS 3G band. You can get the Dev edition for Verizon as well which have the same bands support as the regular Verizon version. You can not unlock the bootloader for the regular version of ATT and Verizon.

So you're saying I could get the Verizon Dev Moto X, and theoretically toss a ATT SIM in it and it will work on ATT (3G-only)? Has anyone tried this?
I can't guarantee it, but that should be the case, all new Verizon phones have unlocked sim on the GSM side, if they don't they would violate the FCC agreement.
We had a discussion on this, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551692

Hello
My friend spoted on ebay that the Moto X Xt1058 is in good price 280$ (at least for me this is good price - I would prefere a version from moto maker but its to expensive)
Will this version work properly in Poland with my GSM provieder?
The bands of my GSM provider are:
"PLAY" uses EGSM 900 for its 2G services and UMTS 2100 and UMTS 900 for 3G.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_(telecommunications)
Play - LTE 1800 MHz
thanks for support
It will work but LTE is probably not going to work

All XT1058 Variants support ALL the GSM & UMTS bands you have listed.
If possible, don't get the AT&T version because you cannot unlock the bootloader, and it comes SIM-locked. If you can get the Rogers Canada version or pretty much ANY other XT1058 you should be able to unlock the bootloader and AFAIK all the variants except AT&T come sim-unlocked...
Good Luck

Thanks for the tip. Root and loading mods is very important to me.
Now the moto x is still the flagship. But soon we will have the succesor. Do you Think it will supported in 1-2 years?
I use an xt1058 (att version) for more than a year in the Netherlands (and the rest of Europe); never had any issues with it, even 4g works as charm.

Thanks for the comment bmszabo. Are you the original owner? Likely someone (yourself even?) had it sim-unlocked....or are the AT&T variants already sim-unlocked for international use? I know for certain that the Sprint XT1056 variants are SIM-locked for both domestic AND international.
As for the bootloader, unless you used the China Middleman, it should still be locked down.

It was an eBay bargain; sim-unlocked ATT Moto X; don't know HOW it was unlocked, but it works just perfect with my Dutch provider (and any other European carriers). In US workes fine with ATT; only thing, but only if I am in the US is a nag message about 'unable to sign in to ATT', or something similar..
What about the version with "bad ESN" ?
Is it only blocked for US or also for europe ?

It will depend entirely on whether or not AT&T adds blacklisted IMEIs to the international banned list. Can someone comment on whether or not this data is shared internationally?
I'm in China so I don't care about warranty. I'm using china-unicom and they uses 4G LTE band 3 as main band.
I just want to have unlocked bootloader and 4G LTE band 3 at same time. But according to the specs on moto website, pure editon have no band 3 support, while on the other hand, I don't know if AT&T model can have bootloader unlocked.
So I want to know that if there is a hardware difference between pure edition and ATT edition. If not, maybe I can just buy a pure edition and try to open band 3 by software operation. Or I don't know if I can get a bootloader unlocking code to deal with a ATT model.
Many thanks :laugh::laugh:

I'm no sure AT&T's newmotox can be unlock the Bootloader and the Network.
In fact, pure edition is T-mobile’s edition.Don't support China Unicom FDD-LTE Network.
T-mobile LTE band: 02 04 17.

I just checked the UK version but no band 03 either.
Come on MOTO! I just need a phone with unlocked BL and band 3 LTE at the same time!
Good night. Finally I purchase used motorola moto x is XT1058 model, review the page firmware, I wonder what's firmware i can install for this model (XT1058)?
another thing, 4g grab with digitel operator? their bands are:
2G Network GSM/GPRS/EDGE 900Mhz
3G Network HSDPA 900/1800Mhz
4G Network LTE 1800Mhz
I have understood that the model XT1058 is att, but this model is not att
If its not an ATT branded XT1058, it could be Rogers Canada. Can you post a screen show of the "About" page showing the android version, software version, etc.?
While the GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands will be compatible. I don't believe the XT1058 (ATT, Rogers or other) supports 1800Mhz HSPA or LTE.
To flash any ROM not meant for that specific mode and its original carrier, you'd need to unlock its bootloader first. If its a Rogers XT1058, you can get the unlock code directly from Moto's web site for free. Based on the text of the web site and Moto's warranty documentation, requesting the code voids the warranty. It also lists warranty is non-transferable. (NOTE: based on your country's laws, etc, it might be slightly different).
Once you unlock the bootloader, you can flash 3rd party roms like CM.
You can also flash other Moto SBF/ROMs for other model X 2013, BUT keep in mind that flashing an incorrect radio could result in issues/problems. And you might run into some issues if you mix/match roms, radios and other parts. NEVER take an OTA unless you are fully on your carrier's stock rom, with all its matching parts!!! And NEVER DOWNGRADE the rom you are on.
