Hey guys,
I am now the owner of an Samsung Galaxy Note. I was wondering... is it worth it to root my phone in order to flash a custom rom? I mean... this phone is getting ICS any day now too.
What's the point of flashing a custom rom? What do you gain? Please let me know!
ROMs have their pluses and minuses. Freedom is what it's all about.
From all I gather, the current process available means that it is complete reversible. Devices can be unrooted and restored to normal condition.
Suppose it's a personal call. I like to play, so I'm rooting mine right now
So there's no real advantage? There's no (visible) increase in phone performance if I root my phone in order to flash it with a custom rom?
Frankly; I don't use my phone for games, so there's no point in me having that kind of "freedom". As long as I have whatsapp, E-mail and all those useful little widgets.
I just want to know whether or not there's a significant advantage to having my phone rooted and flashed with a custom rom.

Then this isn't for you. The whole point is customizations that may not be available otherwise, and in some cases an overall better rom (subjective). I personally like having that option, though I won't bother since like you said ice cream will come soon

I use a ROM because it runs faster/smoother, gets rid of stuff I don't want, and they can be easily modded further via themes and etc.
That said, the Note runs pretty well even stock. It's crazy smooth with the latest Cassy ROM but I'd assume that stock XLA3 runs well too. I'd suggest looking through ROM threads (you generally really only need to look at the first two posts), and see if there's anything you see that you like.
If nothing interests you, then don't bother. If so..... go get it.
Stock firmware, rooted is probably good enough for most people.

Anyway, I love custom ROM's (Coming from a HD2 ), but so far, i've only rooted the stock ROM. I was going to wait for ICS as I couldn't see any benefit to me on a custom one. Plus, i've only had the Note for a day now, so wanted to wait atleast a couple of days before I started to flash new ROM's if I was going to.
I'm the same as you, I don't play games or anything. Just the basics like email, widgets etc etc.

Yes ics is comming but you cant exactly tell when so why wait for ics if you can have a better/faster and smoother Rom right now?!
They definitely do! It always depends what rom you are using but rocket rom for example has a smoothness fix in it and yes it is fckin smooth
Cant complain about my bettery life cant say if its true but in my opinion i have better battery life than before with rocketrom v17 and abysskernel 3.1

I believe fast or slow Roms is gauged on the way the ui frame rate and "rubber band" respond method used in the ipad2. I can really get pissed off totally at how touchwiz behaves to the touch, no matter how you tweak it, the chezzy frame rate sucks. whereas cm9 mod 4.03 gives me the ipad2 feeling of a screamingly fast UI. Samsung! You better not screw up the ICS port you are working on for the note.
I better bet for cm9 to do better.

There are lots of methods of speeding things up - shortening needless delays, removing things you don't need that consume RAM/CPU, removing logging that you don't need, etc. Some methods are safer than others. And optimizing for certain things may mean other things run slower. It all depends.
The same can be said for battery life.
I'd say that overall ROMS certainly run better than stock. You'll see yourself running kernel XXXX, and some people with ROMS on XXXX proclaiming great performance that you aren't seeing.
I'd disagree that there is an overall 'Best ROM'. There is, perhaps, a 'Best ROM' for YOU. In a dream world, the best ROM sacrifices everything you don't use, for stuff that you do use.

In the link you posted it says that ics " should get to note and galaxy 2 in the first quarter of 2012"
Should means nothing... First quarter means possibly April too..

Fine. Message from Samsung saying that ICS for the Note WILL arrive in Q1 of 2012.
I moved back to the stock ROM
Being on 2 different ROMs, rocket rom v18 included. I've seen bugs and lags.
I'm rooted and have a kernel that let's me overclock to 1.6mhz. But ROM is stock
Just my 2 cents. Wait for the ICS
I do regret going past the KL3 threshold with an OTA update without rooting. Now I have to downgrade from KL7 to KK9 get root, if for no other reason than to use the AdFree app.
I will probably go ahead and trouble myself with it before another OTA pops up for the German debitel note since I am uncertain of what will happen once ICS does show up and I would rather be ready to go with mobile odin just in case.
Has anyone found a kernel/rom which uses an AOSP bluetooth stack?
This would fix audio quality issues with bluetooth A2DP
coming froma hd2 and many custom roms i have now settled on a stock room, rooted it and removed anything i dont need using root explorer and changed the launcher to go launcher
given the apps ripped out and change of launcher along with framework mods, its fast enough for my likings
Better battery(most improtant for me ), better performance and more eye candy. Try rocket 18 with speedmod 3, i lost 5% in 22 hrs.
Just to make things easy for the layman.
1) Stock TouchWizz v4 (2.3.6) = 75/100
2) VillianMOD (2.3.6) = 77/100
3) Pure Google (2.3.7) = 70/100
4) CM7.1 (2.3.7) = 85/100
5) MIUI v2.113 (2.3.7) = 89/100
6) Pure Google (4.0.1)= 90/100
7) Stock TouchWizz v4 (4.0.1) = ???
8) CM9 (4.0.1) = ???
9) MIUI v4 (4.0.1) = ???
As you can see, its not worth updating now, unless there's a function you really really want.
Wait for a stable CMod or MIUI ROM if you want to "upgrade".

So true. That's exactly why i want Samsung to "limit" the amount of times i flash my phone vs limitless installs of cROMs
By the way, the only way to find out what the best cROM is, would be to use it for a while. Due to the fact that there are so many options, i think i'd stick to the official one.
I have an unlocked gNote so it may be different for those that have a carrier issued one and have bloatware on the device.
By the way, reading through hundreds of pages of ppl talking about a specific ROM will only make you more confusing

They say that Camera has a pink problem, GPS does not lock quickly, Video recording is not good, it is laggy, etc etc.
But same people are dying for CM Roms which have lots of bugs. Even CM 7.2 has wifi and video recording bugs for i9003.
Even stock Roms do not have those problems, and many latest stock roms are really good, people are not happy with them.
I do not see any reason to mention about Note stock Roms, especially ICS kernels and roms. They are very very stable without any bugs.
However, many people bricked their phones while they are trying to flash CM10 to their Notes.
OK. I accept that one year old stock roms were not good as much as they should be. But this is not the case anymore.
But still many people are ready to die for CM even if it has many bugs. They complain for stock but lose themselves for CM
Now, could someone please explain me what makes CM Roms that better? And even if they have lots of bugs people are using them as daily driver?

CM(At least CM9) is really quite stable on the note, I have never had any problems with it.
I personaly use it as my daily drive for a few reasons:
I find it gives better battery life
I Love the stock ICS look over samsungs touchwiz
CM9 uses much less RAM giving more ram for apps, giving better multitasking and also much more RAM for running a linux GUI
I have used CM roms since my HTC magic CyanogenMod 4 FTW! (infact I might have been running early than that but I really dont remember)
personally ive used CM builds but never felt like ive wanted to use them as my daily drivers because they just lack too many built in features of the stock rom
im not the type of person to get a stripped down rom and download 1000 apps to make it how i want it
id rather use the stock rom, only download 10 apps and have everything there
Mainly it uses a safe kernel which is emmc cap erase command disabled which prevents from our device from bricking.
In CM(/AOSP/AOKP most of the logging/Samsung crap applications were removed so that your phone runs fast. Its just about 140-160 MB. You can feel the difference in size. lol
Its very stable compared to other roms.
You will see a lot of features put it up in rom.

I was using aosp in my smaller phones. Galaxy s2 for example because i can mod them like changong dpi and so on, and the stock rpms for gs2 were so bad, but with my new note i think the stock roms are more stable and battery friendly than aosp, also yhe kernel development for aosp isn't so great as fow TW Roms, and this my 1st reason to use stock, you know i was flashing 2-3 kernels/day in my s2
BTW: You can remove all crap in the stock rom to have agood rolunning rom.

I think in the same way also.
CM lacks lots of stuff from Samsung craps. That's OK. butn it also lack lots of thing I daily use.
Besides I tried ADW Launcher. It really sucks. Nova is far more better and smoother.
Also some people claim that it drains less battery and it is fast. It is obvious that they did not use Notecore v9 with TW
I thas been 1 day and I still have %70 battery. And can't tell how awesome it is. Just check the thread...
As for ram, my phone uses ram between 500-600 mb. There are still 200 mb rams. Which is fine and enough for me.
Also it is really easy to remove some crappy stuff from samsung when you are rooted. (to be rooted takes only three minutes or maybe less )
It is OK some people like it and use it. I am of course fine with that.
But what I mean is CM is not superior to stock or TW based Roms, at least not anymore...

No matter what rom i try, i always end up going back to CM.
The main reason i'm on CM is for the speed and the features.

CM = AOSP. AOSP = Android how it was designed and intended to be.
For me, User Interface is the most important factor in choosing the OS. Android was far behind iOS and WP7. It changed since ICS and now JB made it even better than iOS. Pure awesomeness of WP7 interface is a whole other story, not commenting on the OS itself - its UI is simply amazing. Back to UI preferences...It has to be responsive, fast and well designed ( that means visually attractive and coherent ). For example, TouchWiz is terrible for me, it makes my phone look like cheap chinese rip-off. I'm sorry, that's just my opinion, i don't want to offend anyone. The only overlay i like is Sony's TimeScape, although i still prefer AOSP. Why ? Simply because it's better designed, coherent and smoother - so it makes my user experience a lot more satisfying.
For the Note, best ROM is still Paranoid Rom for me. Firstly because of the safe kernel and secondly I can easily overclock and under volt it without much hassles.

Well it all depends...when I had the captivate Cm9 was by far the best experience. So I came to the note with the same expectations but sadly cm9 and the likes are still not on par with Samsung ROMs in speed or features.
I still flash newer versions as I expect them to be better at some point but at this time..still not there. I use CleanNote Rom.

The predictable Cyanogen answer with all based on Cyanogen.
Easy to flash, stock, fast, light on the battery, has the cooler stock Android ICS look. CM10 coming 'round the corner with JellyBean.
Not recommended for those that love TouchWiz and things like S-Memo.
Well at first i was scared of flashing CM based roms cuz i thought i.d loose s.memo.....but then i took the plunge n believe me m really happy with it.....

You've got a few S-Pen tuned alternatives, like Papyrus. But the gain in performance and battery is really good when you compare it to TouchWiz ROMs. Adding the fact that IT'S SAFE, meaning you can flash/wipe all you want (the CM team did a WAY better job than Samsung on that) and...the choice is pretty obvious for me, really...
If you're going to look into TouchWiz ROMs, make sure you either choose one with a safe kernel included or flash a safe kernel afterwards (I think speedmod...??? Not really sure though, you'll have to research that)
Im using Criskelo v9 rom with GL- Notecore v8.1 (OC) kernel,everything working as it should and the speed is awesome as far as battery goes ive only been running the kernel a few days and it seems ok. I charge my phone every night so battery life is no issue here.Everbody's usage differs tho, if your after longer battey life i wouldnt opt for an OC kernel.

Actually S-memo and the other sammy apps for the s-pen are better than the likes of papyrus and other apps. So for those who want/need s-memo stick with touchwiz based roms.
you guys can get angry with me but im honest to my heart,...as of now there is no rom that is completely good..im going back to gb
all tw ics roms have one major problem: SCROLLING aint smooth enough( ive tried em all)..they stutter like hell!!
and cm9 roms arent that great for battery life...
cm 10 aint fully functional...
all in all i hate it that samsung has created a wonderful device with awesome specs but totally screwed the software releases throughout...to make it even worse is black clipping!!.. im just irritated with this device, dont feel like owning a premium device...im about to sell it hopefully note 2 is better coz the spen and screen size are unbeatable!!!
Stock ROM is the best.
Hi your best option is to go for a Touchwiz rom which you can highly customize during installation. Chrack's and Criskelo are very good fully customizable rooms. They come with Aroma installation to let you remove a lot of bloat ware before installation.
Touchwiz roms also have the best kernels around. Like Note core and Speed mod. These give a very significant improvement in speed n battery. Of course cyanogen based roms r good. But the prob is u will be lacking some native drivers Samsung has integrated into the roms for the best performance. For ex, divx support is there by default, NTFS file format for SD card can be achieved, better drivers for display n graphics etc.
Touchwiz roms can crush cyanogen roms in benchmarks as well. Cyanogen can seem very smooth and fluid. But with the right launcher (apex or nova) u can easily give the rom a stock ICS feel as well. Hope this helped. Cheers

Hi,
I'm looking for a fast and light ROM. I have a Nexus 4 now so my tablet is pretty much just used for taking notes at University and watching the occasional YouTube video.
I looked and managed to find AOKP M6 Slim, however this seems to be discontinued and as a result, outdated.
If installing a more feature-heavy ROM and removing features is viable, could someone point me in the right direction to do that?

Still very rich in features and customization. Includes option to turn off nearly all aftermarket customizations and features, besides performance ones.
I highly suggest pairing with motley kernel.

I like Paranoid Android but you are going to get a different response from everyone. PA runs really smooth for me. It is not as feature filled as a lot of the other roms but gives some nice customization options. PIE control is also really nice as it allows you to take advantage of the entire screen.
The bottom line is that the only way to find the best ROM for you is to do some research and flash a few different ones. Try them for a few days and then switch if you are not pleased/get bored.

Rasbean. But that's the benefit of owning a nexus, you have so many options.
But I'm pretty positive once you flash rasbean, you won't flash anything else. I would advise flashing other roms first and then go to rasbean. You'll notice the difference.

I love that everyone posted a different ROM.
I fell in love with Xylon, it has A TON of features and customizations. I think it borrows (kang) popular features from a lot of ROMs and all the features are optional. Not to mention the ROM is super fast and smooth which I wouldn't expect from A ROM with so many features.
I personally use the custom faux kernel with it, makes the ROM that much slicker, and my battery lasts for an entire day.

I'm on stock ROM 4.2.2 , it's pretty fast stable and battery life is much much better than my previous phone GS3.
CM10.1 was unstable on GS3 and had alot of bugs.
Any annoying bugs on Cm10.1 for N4?

The bugs on the Samsung are due to the difficulty obtaining sources from Samsung. No such problem on the Nexus, and CyanogenMod is as stable as stock and you get the extra features to boot.
ALL of the roms for the Nexus 4 are fast because the phone is fast. I doubt anyone could tell the difference without running benchmarks so you should really just try a few and make a choice based on which feature set you like.

You sir are correct. CM10 on Nexus 4 is the best combination of lightweight and customisable so far that I've seen.
This is borderline a "which is the best ROM" thread and we all know how those turn out. Every ROM I've ever seen claims to be "light and fast" either directly or indirectly..
To the OP.. There are piles and piles of people making ROMs and kernels for this phone. It's one of the most active development communites I've seen in ages. Take advantage of it! No one can pick one for you.. Drop by the development forums, read, read, then read some more.. Pick 5 ROMs that sound up your alley and give them a try.. I'd suggest a ROM a week until you find one you are satisfied with.

Best part about coming to a Nexus forum is being confused about what ROM to flash. Always so many great ones to choose from. lol. :laugh:
So damn true, there are so many ROM's from so many great developers you do really get lost even when going through all of the topics.
So the best bet would be to try it for yourself and flash a few ROM's until you find the one you like.
P.S - this phone is so quick so i doubt really anyone can find a difference in performance between Rom's.

^ there is a difference but I feel it lies within the individual kernels. I've been testing kernels for about two weeks and find myself always coming back to trinity 97, even with 4.2.2 its smooth and battery life is insane. I've bounced from ROM to ROM and find xylon the smoothest. Once rasbean goes 4.2.2 I'll give it a shot. There are so many Roms and they are all *good. *everyone has their opinions and all the devs here put a lot of work and time in and all deserve the respect they get. As far as a “light" ROM goes slim bean would be the lightest coming in at under 110mb zip file, then you'll need gapps and they have minimal gapps available at around 25mb.

I've been thinking of flashing Novafusion's CyanogenMod on my Samsung Galaxy s3 Mini and I was wondering what people's experiences with it are so far. Does it boot up fast? Can you navigate through the menus smoothly or are the animations a bit choppy? Do apps work better/faster on it than on stock Android? I'd like to know this so I can actually make a decision whether or not to install the ROM on my phone.

hi, i decided to root my phone about 6 months ago, i did it but accidentally deleted EVERYTHING from my phone and my phone was only bootlooping. Lucky for me i installed TWRP before that. I downloaded Carbon rom and tried it for about 3-4 days and it was really good rom. I decided to switch to CM11. This rom was by far the best rom that i ever used. It has many advantages, it is lightweight, it has theme engine(this is the best feature for me), it is fast and stable, animations are also fast, battery life is good, maybe it is even great, i couldnt tell exactly because my battery is not original and it is old, phone calls are good, messaging also works, internet is great(wi-fi and mobile data), the phone does not boot fast(it boots in 2 mins or so), stock boots faster, switching between apps is definitely faster than stock and overall impression is much better than stock rom. If you don't like this rom, you can always flash Dmod V6 which is stock rom, but different themed and devs added different stuff. So if you have any further questions just PM me or comment, i will try to answer ASAP.

i'm used cm 11.0 it really good for who searching fully working rom, i upgraded to cm 12.1 the rom it also good but the bugs for me it's the record screen and change vpn
Thanks for the replies, guys. This will really help in my decisionmaking. The only thing I will probably not like is the status bar that is on the screen. Ihave this on my tablet (running CM11) and I have no idea how to customize it.
Novafusion ROM is the best custom ROM . It runs very smooth. Apps run even smoother if you convert your partition to f2fs . One SMALL disadvantage is that it drains battery fast.

you can enable "expanded desktop" feature to remove statusbar from screen

I have been using this rom on my s3 mini for a couple of days now and I really like it. There is a fix for the battery drain here.
