On my friends Moto X 2014 when he gets a text missed call etc it shows up on the display. It will start to appear then disappear until you swipe it away. Will the Nexus 6 also do this? All this without even touching the phone.
Not that I have seen. Hopefully when enough developers get their hands on the device, we will start seeing some useful mods. Just give it time.

that sounds exactly like ambient display.. no?
If you want an app that's nearly identical use dynamic notifications. That's as close as you're going to get to moto display without having moto display.

The Nexus 6 comes with ambient display. When you get a notification it will display you the message and disappear within like 3 seconds. Also of you pick up the device, it will also display the notifications without turning on the screen similar to the Moto X.
You can even say "OK Google" when the screen is off across the room and activate Google Now without ever touching the device.
Given that the architecture is similar to the 2014 X & practically the same as the Droid Turbo, it should be feasible to port it to the N6 IMHO...

Will the nexus 6 have wave-to-wake feature like the Moto X 2014?
If not by default then is it possible that it can have this feature in future by any means??
No, it does not have it by default.
There are apps that can use the proximity sensor with older phones to wake it up, so I imagine that at some point, yes, it will be possible to replicate the Moto X wave-to-wake feature via app.

Ok.. I hope it does happen...
I use this this feature frequently on my Moto X 2014. I will definitely miss it if I get a N6.
Here's the app I use on my Nexus 5. Assuming there aren't any issues running it under Lollipop, it has a setting that wake the phone with a wave. However, I'm not sure whether it will FULLY wake the phone, or let you just activate Ambient Screen. Maybe contacting the dev, and requesting an Ambient Screen setting would help.
Gravity Screen - On/Off
It wont by default - it is a moto specific software feature.
Begging or hoping it is added will do nothing, as the nexus is from google OS wise, and moto hasn't added that specific software (or hardware, see below) to it like the moto X.
Your best hope is 3rd party app that can give that capability, however that said, the phone would have to have the IR sensors like the X in order to detect the handwaving, which AFAIK it doesn't have.
Is this the same feature found in the note 2?

All modern smart phones have proximity sensors though, and third-party developers have tapped into those. The trick isn't the detection, it's the activation of Ambient Screen without fully waking the phone.
For instance, the Gravity Screen app I posted earlier will wake my N5 with a wave over the screen just perfectly, but it FULLY wakes the device. If they can alter that to give the option of waking the device, or only activating Ambient Screen, then it would almost perfectly emulate the Moto function.
I read this demo from Droid-Life about the Ambient Display feature of the Nexus 6:

So, this supposed to replace the LED notification that we all knew already.
My question: When the phone receives a notification, the display will lit on showing the notification.
That's good.
But, for how long it is displayed?
I meant, I recall with LED notification, I could see it for quite long until I noticed that I got a notification.
Will the ambient display, display the "new" notification until we "touch" the display OR interact with it?
That would be ideal.
Anyone know?
Yep, it will appear each ca. 5 seconds for ca. 2 secs until you´ve marked it as read (or until battery is empty ).
So for me it´s kind of an smarter / advanced LED replacement
Only drawback is that it only makes sense with AMOLED display (Which we know the N6 is equipped with).
So, when a new notification came in ...
The ambient display will display the notification for 2 seconds ... then OFF ... then 5 seconds later appear for 2 seconds ... then OFF ...
Repeat the above until the notification is marked as read ... or the battery has run out.
Correct?
If yes, then I think this is better!
Sorry, now I´m not 100% sure anymore as I´ve seen your linked video. I thought that Google implements it like Moto indeeds blinks as I described, but on the N6 it seems to light up only (1x) on arrival of new notifications or if you pick up the phone. Fingers crossed that N6 will get kind of a permanent blinking mode.
Android police has a nice video showing this feature. The notifications do light up periodically after they come in. Something like every 5-10 seconds until you dismiss them. Picking it up does light the ambient display as well, but they will 'pulse' on their own.
Nice, was wondering how it will work. To me better then the led.
I wonder if dynamic notifications from the play store would work better in this situation.

Have you used this on an amoled screen before? I'm curious the battery usage on it.

This is the response I got from the developer. I've used it on my nexus 5 before and it didn't seem to make a huge impact on battery life but the nexus 5 doesn't have an amoled screen. I imagine on they nexus 6 that it would be less of a battery hog than the ambient display.
thanks for your message! The app automatically uses the low-powered motion detection chips on newer handsets. The allocation of computing tasks to low-powered processor cores is, to the best of my knowledge, performed automatically by the system depending on the situation, so I would imagine that the app does make use of them, as it is frequently in the background and doesn’t do any “heavy lifting”. The CPU/memory footprint of the app is minimal, as it doesn’t constantly query for new notifications, but is provided with them as they come in by the Android system.

Can't seem to find that video
With Ambient Display turned on and NO unread notifications, does the screen still light up when the phone is picked up (because that would be bad from my point of view)?
Mine is not breathing at all. The phone is locked and a notification comes in, it will light up the first time, but it does not appear automatically at timed intervals after that, only when you pick up the device.
Very disappointing..

Half the time mine doesn't even come on when picked up.

Yep, that's exactly how it works for me too! The good thing though is that it lights up 98% of the time so I don't have any major complaints about it.

Do you not like looking at your phone and without having to interact with it know that you have a notification?

I have not gotten a "pulse" on it yet...it lights up when a notification comes in, and "breathes" a few times...but it seems to stop after minute or two...I don't see any settings to control this either.
I'd like to have a definitive understanding of exactly how it will function...
I did see the vid and from what i get out of it, sometimes when you pick up the phone the notification lights up, sometimes it doesnt. Not to mention, accelerometer/gyroscope sensor would need to be active at all times for ambient display to work.
A clear case of "if it isn't broken, don't f'king fix it."
Deciding between the Moto X 2014 and the Nexus 6. I have a preference for the larger screen of the Nexus 6, but also like the idea of the Motorola Value Added Software (Touchless, Car Mode, Moto Voice, etc). Nexus 6 doesn't run this software. Looking for current Moto X 2014 owners to give me their impression of how important/useful the Motorola Suite of Value Added Software is, and how much weight I should give to this in my comparison/decision.
I know we will be a little biased, but you will get a near nexus/stock android experience on the moto X plus the extra useful features that are exclusive to moto devices. The active display notifications and touchless commands really make this a stellar device along with more than sufficient hardware.
The Active Display is great, I use it all the time. Even after the L update I disabled Google's new lock screen to use it instead. It's not as nice looking but the battery savings and ability to see notifications without touching the screen are great, plus it pretty much negates the entire need for the power button to wake it which is really convenient.
Not all of the features are quite as useful as that but I'm glad they're there. The car mode is cool if I get a text while driving as it reads it aloud without me needing to touch it.
moto display is just simply awesome, it's basically life changing from previous 2 phones past couple years:
iphone 4: had to press home button every time just to see if any notification(even jb and put on notification bar app with cydia)
moto g: light was on but i didn't know if it was email or actual text etc, so i still had to click the rocker or pick it up(gravity screen/xposed mod to get these, otherwise pressing power button again)(get like 20 email/day i just simply ignore most and just check once a day at the most)
now Moto x: just wave it or move my phone and see any messaging/call i miss
moto voice: i drive 10+hrs a week routinely and too lazy to put on music sometimes and just listen to musics on radio. I would call on the phone and just ask what music it is and pick it up later when i get back home etc. Without reaching my hand to phone feels alot safer. Send message with whatsapp needs a little simplified as reply or something to get it a little more useful
moto assist: text reading is not bad but i wish they do the same to fb messenger and whatsapp as well, that would be awesome
Active Display its godlike, i love that i just need to pass my hand over my phone to see notifications.
As first i didnt think i would use Voice Controls that much, but there are some situations when its just soo good. Driving, setting up alarms when on bed, etc...
Not to mention the hardware its pretty much top of the line, and the build quality too
But its the extra features that are the highlight of the phone, and what mskes it stand out of the oh so typical high end device
I bought the moto x for it voice control eventhough it isn't available in my language but it is very useful driving
Moto suite is the only reason I'm going to keep my Moto X and pass on the N6. It's that important to me. It changes how I use a phone now and I know I would miss it if I didn't have it. The first time you're in the shower and a phone call or a text comes in and you can have a full conversation with either without having to touch your phone. It's incredible.
Looks like most (so far) find these features more useful than I first thought. Special thanks to those who are putting in detailed impressions (I just pressed the "Thanks Button" for you ). Any further impressions are deeply appreciated!
If the moto specific features are the only thing holding you back from getting a Nexus 6, then go for the nexus 6 you won't miss them all that much as the nexus 6 now has some sort of replacement features via ambient display and always on google now.
I got the moto x considering its price, size and the extra features, fast updates. But in your case I'd recommend the N6 if the price and size aren't a problem
So I'm coming from a 5X that had a nice RGB LED, I was able to set different colors for different apps and could tell from across the room what if any notifications I had - no need to look at it for more than a second or 2 or pick it up or anything. I could then respond accordingly: White - email, probably just spam ignore it; Green - text, get to it when not busy; Pink - tinder, drop the baby and run for the phone.
With the x4 I seem to have taken a step backwards - the screen lights up with the clock and an icon for whatever notification (but I have to be standing right by the phone to see the specific icon). But the bigger issue is it only lights up once when the notification comes in - I really don't need to know I have a notification when it comes in (I heard the chime or vibrate) but I would love to be able to walk away from my phone, glance at it and know if I missed anything without having to pick it up. I'm not sure a world where I have to move my phone every time I come back to it could be considered convenient.
From what I have seen online it described the phone has breathing (pulsing every now and then) when you have an active notification, but this was earlier Moto models - I get just one notification at the time it comes in and nothing else ever. Unless I move the phone - which brings me to the 2nd issue, the sensitivity of the motion sensor, I can have the phone on my desk or couch cushion next to me and just placing a remote down near it or typing the phone is constantly lighting up (even when I don't have a notification) I have the Approach for Moto Display turned off and it definitely has to be moved, but just the tiniest of amount - I get the feature is designed for people that want to grab the phone to see the time and not have to turn it on, but there is a huge difference between the slight vibration from typing on a keyboard next to it vs. actually picking the thing up.
If Motorola/Lenovo is going to want people to embrace Moto Display at least make it so it isn't constantly flashing away for no reason.
Anyway are my experiences the norm? While I would love to be able to turn the motion sensor off for Moto Display my big issue is lack of persistent notification notifying without any interaction from me.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/themes/app-frontflash-notification-v1-7-t3740066
Yea, it's working "as intended". It was a poor choice really to disable the notification LED from the phone. I think it's fine on Amoled displays that can have the breathing without affecting battery life too much, but it's not the case here.
Although I generally like the high sensitivity of the Moto Display. I leave the aporoach feature disabled, and everytime I go by my phone when it's in a table or something I just push it slightly to check the notifications, it's way more convenient than to use the power button and gives more information than a RGB LED.
Thank you both, yes I did some more digging and seems like they did away with the 'breathing' feature.
I'll try that front flash app,
This whole thing just seems a little poorly thought out - disable the breathing so as not to reduce battery life, but make the user pickup the phone periodically which decreases battery life.
I get if they want to do something different than a notification LED but not everyone wants to pick up there phone every X minutes to see if they missed something.
Least I now know when it periodically turns on the Moto Display its not to remind of a current notification its just the stupid motion sensor being way to sensitive.
It is normal. In my opinion the Moto display on the new Moto are not as sensitive as older models like the Moto x pure. You were able to literally wave your hand over the screen to see notifications and time and battery level. However I still love the active display. But I also miss the notification light. But because of the active display they felt like their was no need for led notification. The Moto x4 is still a great handset with features that many people actually use like active display. I have used Samsung and Sony and lg and always had issues. Since the Moto x first came out and bought it I have never had issues with hardware or software. Sure the updates may take a lifetime however Motorola in my opinion is the bear handset for me in terms of quality. It helps tho that even with Android one or Nexus out their that Moto has almost near clean stock of Android than any other manufacturer.
I can see the argument for not needing a LED when MotoDisplay would 'breath' and periodically show the notifications, but now they have done away with that it seems like an LED would really help. That being said I am trying to adjust and get into the habit of nudging the phone when I come back to it.
"Approach for Moto Display" doesn't work for me, I know that this device have this feature but doesn't work for me =\, I was wondering if anyone else who has this device also has this problem and has been able to solve
Sorry for my bad English
It works for me, there are two situations where the display activates.
1. I reach for the device, or rather have may hand 3-5 cm above the display.
2. The device is laying on the flat surface, and is picked up.
Does neither of these scenario work for you?
