[Q] SystemUI Wakelocks - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Getting around 3.5 hours SOT after a few charges it does not seem to be getting better. Constantly seeing System UI listed as top wakelock offender. I cleared the cache and it helped for a short time. Now it is no longer listed under Lollipop battery stats but WLD finds it every time.
Just wondering if anyone has seen the same wakelocks. In WLD it seems most are audio related. The others say 'dozeservice'.
Using WLD to detect. Rooted, unlocked. DPI changed, double tap to wake installed. Nothing set to sync aside from default google services. Gmail, calendar, chrome, etc.

If you have touch sounds on, turn them off. Now one of the first things I turn off. Always get wakelocks when I had that option on. . Yeah. You should be getting closer to 6 SOT

Thanks for the reply. The only sounds I have on are dialer (barely make outgoing calls) and lock screen sounds I just disabled lock sounds though. I find them extremely annoying but always forget to turn off.

I can manage 5-6 hours SOT depending on what I'm doing. 4 is super easy to get even with GPS running and Bluetooth all day. I would give greenify a try to see if that helps.

I agree. Greenify is a must. I would greenify all apps you don't receive notifications from. My podcast app was using my GPS all day long the other day. Greenified and haven't seen it since.

I'm having the same issue with system ui wake locks. Rooted decrypted. However, ive been averaging 4-5 hours SOT, so its not that bad. I'm not sure what exactly is causing the wake locks though.

I can barely get 2.5 hours sot before I'm down to 10 - 15% battery. Kernel and android os are way up there in battery consumption... Yesterday between the two, they kept my phone awake for almost 7 hours

Do you have wakelock detector installed? If so can you tell me what you're seeing as the culprits. Also wondering if you're paired to a wearable. I have a moto 360 paired.
I am now seeing:
The usual 'dozeservice' multiple times
AudioMix
Alarm
Ringtone player
Show keyguard
I have no alarms set.

I ended up wiping it today while I was getting rid of encryption.
Planning on slowly adding apps back.
If anyone wants to chime in to compare apps, here's what I had.
Adaway, Nest, Plex, Netflix, Battery widget, Wear, WLD, Greader pro, Weather
I'm usually pretty light on apps but figured maybe someone with the same problem might recognize an app.

I've had the same - Systemui and Google search wakelocks. Have Twitter, Reddit is Fun, Wakelock Detector, Gsam, AC Unity, App Ops, Grubhub, greenify, Snapchat, Tunein Radio.

Ugh. So we have one app in common.
Im on my fresh install with one downloaded app (wld) and systemui is still waking.
Are you seeing the same instances in systemui as i am?

This is turning into a bit of a 'dear diary' but in case anyone comes across the same problem I am hoping to document for them.
Since I wiped and disabled encryption my battery life has increased significantly. I have only installed instagram, nest, and swiftkey so far.
SystemUI is still wakelocking slightly but nowhere near what I was seeing before.
I've been up for 22 hours and I'm currently at 53% remaining. Granted only 2 hours SOT so far but this is FAR better than I'd seen before.
I will continue to load apps slowly to see if I can find the culprit.

I'm bumping an old thread but I've been having the same wakelock issues with dozeservice and it turns out that dozeservice is the ambient display feature, which makes sense.

I have a few questions:
1-What is a good Wakelock detector app?
2- Can I use Greenify with Franco Kernal?
Thanks!

Is it OK to clear the cache of systemui? Because I am having the same issue. It's on top of my list causing wake lock. I've installed Franco kernel and I am on stock 5.1.1 encrypted but I only get around 3 hours of SOT

MSM_HSIC_HOST Wakelock. Suggestions on how to fix?

I have no idea how to get to the bottom of this. Everything I normally try simply doesn't work when it comes to fixing this problem. In Better Battery Stats, it's clear that something is causing the modem to stay awake, because msm_hsic_host is a direct reference to external modem. I will literally have 10-20 minutes max of partial wakelock from sync and then I will have over two hours of msm_hsic_host wakelocks. Avast and Better Battery Stats all do not show any application taking up significant data in the background.
This is making the difference between 4-5 hours of screen on time and 6-7 hours of screen on time. Is there some sort of method to figuring out what is destroying my battery life?
Don't know if this information will help, I have used wakelock detector from play, a free app to show various wake locks .
Also tried Qualcomm battery guru, again free from play , it's a beta app specifically for phone with Snapdragon soc. When first enabled it monitors your phone usage for over 24 hours before enabling various power saving options, that can be customized by the user.

hmm.. interesting to see this as i thought this was a 4.2 issue. See this thread below. The wakelock is related to a driver issue from qualcom who makes the snapdragon s4 pro and 600. They released a patch that has been merged into various custom kernels but the issue remains in the AOSP stock kernel to this day. This is a main reason why i dont mind being on 4.1.2 instead of 4.2.2 until google or a dev for the HTC one fixes it, your battery life will suffer

I ran a wireshark to figure out what was causing it.
One of my issues was Hotmail sync. Setting it to Push apparently means that it will constantly send packets back and forth. Stupid, but whatever.

Hey,
can you explain how you ran a wireshark? I have this wakelock and can't figure out how to stop it and I dont use hotmail sync
Same problem here.... Lot of wake locks and can't find out what causes it.
24% lost in 9 hours sleep mode.
I have the same problem. Because of this Wakelock my HTC One won't go back to DeepSleep.
Is there no app/tool to observe which ap causes this wakelock?
did anyone find a solution? which network are you on (i'm on vodafone nl)
Facebook messenger!
I had this issue as well.. the wakelock was doing its thing like 50% of the time.. removed facebook messenger => the values are back to normal.
Please post if you can see the same..

It's apparently much better than the n4 which had nearly the same wake lock as off-charger time. The snapdragon 600 with HTC has much improved the wake lock times.
i woke up today to see this happen for the firs time to my phone.
newest changes to mine: installed ARHD 9 (but it was fine the day or two since, only last night it was unplugged from the wall, instead of the usb port)

[Q] Is my battery broken?

Hey I have just bought HTC One 2 days ago. Compared to my old Sensation XE battery life completly sucks. I usually use phone without battery saver, on auto brightness and with Wi-Fi/3g turned on only on demand. Today 8 hours after unplugging phone from the charger I only have 26%. Screen was turned on for 2 hours and 45 minutes only and Wi-Fi worked for 3 hours and 46 mins. I might also say that I did not charge my One before usage to 100% as HTC advised. Was that very crucial? Do you think that phone might be broken or I should just give him time to settle baterry better.
That's sounds like what I get. I turn off mobile data when using WiFi and vice versa. I always use power saver unless I'm 3D gaming. Which is only on the weekends.
I've had mine for 3 months now.
I've seen people get 7:00 screen time on stock unrooted.
I think my battery's broken too. I can barely reach 3 hours of screen time. With 2 hours I get like 11 maybe 12 hours of on time. Something's wrong with our phones...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your battery stats seem on par with me and the OP. Seems that only a select few phones get decent battery life.
My kernel (android os) has been in the 25-35% range,it has never been that high before.
battery life lousy
I get pretty horrible drain too. I charged it to nearly full around 7:30 last night. I took about 2 minutes of video, sent one text, and checked my email 3 times. After that I went to sleep and the phone sat idle. At 6:30 this morning, I'm down to 9%.

Wow, that's real bad.. When my phone is off during night maybe 7% is gone. Then again I'm rooted and use greenify aswell as battery doctor if that has any affect.
On screen time seems like my battery drains pretty fast too though. After 2 hours of music and surfing and watching videos I guess atleast 40% would be gone.
My battery life became horrible, too. My phones loses 4% per unused hour. No App seems to be responsible for that drain. Flightmode or powersaving mode ain't making a difference. I hope we'll find a solution for our drain.

@Racingmatt your power management services is on for quite a bit. do you have alarms.? i would bet that you either that maps location enabled or something of the sort. cause you also have NLPcollector on for around 40 minutes which is a bit much. also i would turn off GPS if your not actively using it.
@Rachorid how are you setting up your wifi? is it set to always be on? or set to turn off when screen off? you have alot of wifi wake. might be due to that. i know when i'm at home my wifi actively pings all devices connected which will force wake up my phone. yea its a bit annoying but i live with it. otherwise i just keep my phone plugged in.
if you both can get some SS of alarms i can give you a better idea. and when you SS the alarms make sure to click on the ones with the most wake lock so i can see the secondary screen that shows what the actual wakelock command is happening.

Here are the latest stats. As you can see many Google wakes.. removing Maps/Now/GMail/turning of Location (a few days ago) had no impact on my drain. The 2nd app on Partial Wakelocks was used actively.
I also disabled Wifi for about 2 hours.. no impact, too. Flightmode also had no impact (a few days ago).

The reason I didnt give you a alarm ss is because I didn't have any alarms when I went to the alarms section. I also had all locations services including GPS enabled but I just now disabled GPS but left network location enabled I'll give you a screenshot later so you can see the differences

I had awesome battery life a month ago with Wifi always on, auto. brightness and every app on hourly sync. (I have my phone since 7th of march) Sometimes I didn't lost a percent over night (8 hours) and I just don't know what it could be because I didn't install another app and no app seems to be responsible for that stanby drain. My on-screen battery life is still good. It also doesn't matter which ROM or kernel I'm using.
Here is my latest stats after 12 hours with 5 minutes of GPS use (turned off when not using)and network location on all the time with 3g/4g on all the time(turns off after a period of inactivity) . I can't give you a alarm stat because I'm not rooted.
Lithium-Ion batteries used in today's smartphones need atleast 10 cycles to show optimum power
so hold on until 2 weeks then you will get the full performance
i get 2 days of battery on my HTC One (since i dont have internet on my Simcard)
its 2G connection and auto Brightness and switched bloatwares off
i use Android Revolution HD 12.2

with normal use 3.6%/h is pretty reasonable. how much screen on time was that including?

Screen Brightness kills battery more than you'd think

So the poor battery life on my Note 4 might have more to do with screen brightness than I would have expected. Unfortunately, most people posting their SOT's aren't doing it in a very scientific way, so it's hard to know what we should expect from these devices.
Here are my battery test results using PCMark for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.futuremark.pcmark.android.benchmark
In one test, I put the screen brightness to 100% and the results were pretty dismal. In the second test, I ran it at 50% brightness, which is brighter than the Note 2 at full and the results were much better.
I use Auto brightness during the day, which might explain my poor battery life, but I'd love to know what others score on PCMark are (it does run for 5+ hours!). I do keep my background BLACK, as well as using black themes on everything I can - for apps that only have white backgrounds, I use AutomateIt to invert the colors automatically. I would have thought these black backgrounds would do more, but it really comes down to brightness it seems.
I'm using an Exynos N910U model and left wifi connected while doing this test - 3 google accounts are synced on my device.

thanks for tests im using my exynos version on auto brightness and generally get 6 hours SOT. i saw on alot of people s stats and people who has problems generally has google play services on their battery usage list and it definetly shouldnt be at there... its probably about location reports to google every1 should disable it from location settings it doesnt break anything.

Yes, location can be an issue, but I think that impacts standby time more than SOT. Currently I've done the following to help with location-related issues:
- used lion tamer (soon to be called amplify) to slow down NLP wakelocks.
- set my location settings to powersave mode
- setup AutomateIt to turn on GPS when I'm in Google Maps (I'm usually plugged into the car outlet, so battery isn't a concern while navigating.
- Greenify stuff like Google search, Maps and several others.
I like and use Location Reporting, so disabling it outright isn't an option. My standby usage is very good at usually less than 1% an hour and my wakelocks keep my device awake usually less than 6%, but I'm still working to lower that number.

Before I started tweaking, I was getting around 6%-9% drain PER HOUR! Disabling stuff without root only got me so far, then the xposed tweaks and Titanium Backup had to be used.

like i said i dont know whats wrong for some people its probably something you installed(skype maybe) or mostly about location reporting. even last night i left my phone at 90% when i get it this morning after like 10 hours it was on 88% like i said earlier wifi was connected no power saving etc just normal idle time nothing special.

I was testing without any apps installed (just whatever I used to record battery consumption) and it was crazy high. Then I started adding accounts and apps, tweaking and I got my standby time to be much lower, but SOT leaves much to be desired. I'm going to try using the manual brightness and see if there are any differences - I often find auto brightness to be too bright or too dim! No "sweet spot" found! LOL
Greeny can also help but may need root
I'd suggest changing the settings for your Battery Monitor Widget app. AFAICS it polls every 10 minutes so a wakelock occurs every ten minutes to save the data. Use something like an hour and see what happens. Also would highly recommend BetterBatteryStats, a free version is available here for members.

Wait, with the screen off? Then you have something horribly wrong with your device. Mine did a few % over a night. With nothing done to the phone to conserve battery at all. Snapdragon, though. With the update.
I loose only 2% for 7h of standby last night.
We are seeing a trend I think, I noticed that it's mainly us 910U users or exnyos users complaining about battery life. So it must be something in the 910U rom?
I've got a 910F and I get 6 hours screen on time maximum :/

Doesn't happen now that I've rooted and applied my standard tweaks, but I tried a factory reset to see if I could correct the high standby drain and was not successful without these tweaks.

I have 910f and i got same issues with my batt.
i've tried clean system, root, custom rom. Battery is always draining higher than some people.
As i said in other thread: some people have an issue, some have great battery life. And nobody knows why
Maybe it's the guys who keep it stock and don't root, custom rom and "tweak" that get the good battery life.
Delete it pls.

Horrible Note 4 Battery Life. Android System Draining Way Too Much Battery.

So I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4, I got it back in October so yes I have "broken in" the battery. I have checked out several other posts and tried pretty much everything. I've turned off bluetooth, NFC, any and pretty much all useless Samsung features (smart stay, turn over to mute, multi-window), I've got a black wallpaper on for both my home and lock screens, I have greenify AND DU Battery Saver, I ONLY ever use data as I have unlimited data and my building has a shared wifi network which I don't trust, I have tweaked Sync in the settings menu to only sync crucial info from all my accounts (google, facebook, email, whatsapp, etc.). So far the BIGGEST battery drainer is Android System. It is always number one. I've had days where I've decided to push the screen-on time to its limits and have used it nonstop. Screen consumption only ever gets close even if I use my phone nonstop Android System is the biggest offender. I've tried keeping power saving mode on 24/7 but that has not seemed to help at all. I've disabled S Health, S Voice, and several other apps I never use like Google Play Newsstand. I am at the end of my rope I despise this phone for its claim to great battery life but its absolute GARBAGE real world performance. I consider myself lucky to get over 3.5 hours SOT. At this rate I might as well have an iPhone 5. I have no idea what to do.
Here's a list summarizing the things I've done to improve battery life:
Bluetooth off
NFC off
Multi-Window off
All email sync set to Manual
Sync for every account adjusted to isync only crucial info
Pitch Black Wallpaper
Power Saving Mode (Not Ultra Power Saving) switched on about 90% of the time
Using Greenify on all Power-Hungry apps
Closing most apps upon finishing using them
Using DU Battery Saver in order to monitor battery activity
Never use Wifi
No Multi-Window
No Touch Sensitivity
No Side Key Panel
Wifi Calling feature disabled (I never use wifi anyway)
No Download Booster
No Smart Stay
Animations switched off via the Developer Options
Tried using another battery (similar if not identical results)
I'm still getting at the very best if I'm somehow on a miraculous streak of good luck that day: 4 hours of Screen-On Time. It is ALWAYS Android System usually followed by Android OS and then an app or two before Screen (because my SOT is so pathetically terrible)
I love this phone, the display is beautiful, the camera is fantastic, it runs seamlessly (on Nova Launcher that is), BUT I despise the battery life. It has made me resent this phone and I'm seriously considering switching to the iPhone 6 Plus as that has comparable battery life and with it running iOS I doubt the OS would destroy my battery the way Android has been lately. What do you guys do to get such good battery life from this phone? I've tried everything I know!! Please can you help guys?
I'm also attaching screenshots from one of the BETTER days.
I would consider rooting and installing a custom rom, poprock I would recommend for keeping touchwiz.
I don't know.. maybe your battery is the problem.. When I was on stock I had the same issue, but i varied in a weird way. With poprock, battery life has been amazing.

A few people have this issue. I really think it has to do with a corrupt file that was flashed. Maybe no fix but a new phone. If part of the pit file got damaged no fix but samsung.

This is known as battery rape. Please view my thread about it posted yesterday lol
Are you still on KK or LP?

the battery distribution and the SOT is what I usually get too.. but the usage of 7 hours is too little. I always get over a day..

I'd already seen your thread. It wasn't too helpful for me unfortunately because I'm not rooted. Half the terms you guys were using "Odin'd, pit file, etc." I don't understand at all. I'm running Nova Launcher on this phone. Just typing this comment my battery has dipped from 78% to 74% this is ****ing ridiculous I'm sick of this **** phone I might just switch to iPhone. I'm done with battery raping Android.
I'm in the process of fixing this. I think I may have figured something out. I have been slowly working through freezing applications to figure out what is causing the battery drain. I've made some progress. I really think it is an issue with lollipop system apps.
I am now having a slight dragon from cell standby, but the Android System drain is getting capped. Been in this single charge for 17 hrs and Android system is only 7%
Once I get a bit more firm information I will post my findings.

Some suggestions: check out your Google settings first. Disable Google Now and uncheck their location monitoring settings. Also freeze Facebook (use the website instead). Finally ou can disable sync altogether for a while in case other apps are hammering away through it. Test your battery under each of those conditions. Good luck, be patient, take your time. If your battery is good eventually you'll get to the bottom of it. Use Better Battery Stats to monitor. Most people get fantastic battery life. I rarely use 40% in a day. Over night (8 hours) I lose 2% - that's also a really good thing to watch. If you are draining badly at night, you have major wake locks occurring.

Err. i literally had facebook, tinder, syncing my accounts manually using toggle, and was still getting 7hrs of SOT.
This is something else altogether.

Thanks I'll try some of that but my problem is that I shouldn't have to do all of this crap! God it seems like we HAVE to revert these superphones back to pre 2000 dumb phones in order to get any kind of a decent battery performance from them. Samsung just haaaaaad to make the screen 2K. If they'd kept 1080p it might've been better! I might as well just switch to the iPhone 6 plus if I want ZERO functionality from my big screen phone. God I hate this Note 4 and I'm so jealous of people who don't do anything like this and still get 5-7 hours of SOT with their Note 4's. I'm beginning to think they're full of it honestly.

Nope. Either replace the phone or wipe and start over since u not rooted very little help.
If you're not rooted do this:

If you are scared of root just stay stock rooted. Not a slight at Bacardi. He answers the questions better than us.
I am have the same issue with battery drain from Android System. I have see that issues is there when WiFi is enable the battery drains faster. When WiFi is off and using mobile data it drains normal.

I will be watching this carefully. I have the same issue. Always Android system and Android OS in the top 3 battery drainer. Only, issue I have is I have to use WiFi at home. T-mobile service drops to Edge about a half mile before reaching my neighborhood.

If you click on the Android Systems within the Battery usuage section. It will give you more detail, and show you what services, or packages are using it. The. You can take it from there.
This is what I have right now.

Hey folks,
I have keeping an eye on my battery and I noticed that my note 8 doesn't go into deep sleep?

I installed the app and noticed that mine goes into deep sleep state as soon as the screen turns off. I'm thinking you have a rogue app causing wake locks. Try a wake lock app to. See what it could be. BTW, I'm running in mid powersave mode, not high performance.
Cool app. I'm glad that I found this thread.
I get 94% screen off time in deep sleep. I don't have many apps installed on my phone. I keep my phone lean and try not to gunk it up with apps that misbehave. I just installed Samsung Pay yesterday and noticed that it is eating a bit more standby battery. This is the only reason that I really liked root. It was very easy to find and kill whatever wakelock was keeping my phone from sleeping. Without root, it's much more difficult. It's usually a process of uninstalling apps and seeing how battery life is affected.
I hate wakelocks.
Do you have any good suggestions for an app to track my wake locks? I'm not rooted.

Theoretically, Better Battery Stats can be set up to track wakelocks on unrooted phones by using a few ADB commands. I haven't tried. it. There was an article on the front page of XDA about a month and a half ago on how to set it up.
BBS was my goto app for rooted phones. There's also an app named Wakelock Detector, but I don't think there's any way to fool that into helping you out.
I'd absolutely love to hear about an easier way to do this, if there is one.
Bbs seems to be working for me. Using the adb method
Here's the link to the XDA article on using BBS without root:
https://www.xda-developers.com/stop-wakelocks-android-without-root/
I like GSAM as well. I wonder if this method can be used with it.

And one thing that I don't understand is why Android makes this information so difficult to get, without root. I mean what is the harm of making this information readily available? Wakelocks are the one thing that I absolutely hate about Android. I've been fighting them since my first Android phone and apparently that fight continues today, with this version. In standby, I'm losing around 1% per hour and I have almost nothing installed on the phone. Before I installed anything, I charged up the phone, took it off the charger, and left it overnight and I lost two percent battery in 8 hours. Last night's test, I lost seven percent in seven hours.
I wish I could be one of those people who just used the phone and plugged it in and never realized any of these things. My wife's like that. She has a ton of apps installed on her phone and gets almost no deep sleep time. She doesn't even notice it and doesn't care. She uses the phone and pops it on the charger when needed. Sometimes she complains about battery life, but doesn't care enough to look into what's causing it (hint, it's probably Facebook).
