My upgrade is coming up soon and am thinking of either the Samsung ATIVs, Nokia Lumia 820 or HTC 8x, These are the only viable options O2 have on offer at present, Looks as though they will not be stocking the Lumia 920.
I am currently using a Lumia 900 running 7.8 and have used a Lumia 820 before it had to be replaced, Wife now has my 820 and from my experience with Nokia and HTC I have not had much luck with reliability.
I have had a HTC Titan & Titan2 and love the large screens.
Question is do I take a gamble on the Samsung? Can anyone share their experiences and or preferences to help me make a decision?
Thanks in advance.
Hmm, tough one.
For me, Lumia920 is the WP8 uberphone just 4 now.
Samsungs Ativ? IMHO it has only 2 pros and much more contras.
Pros: Big screen (But AMOLED, not IPS), and good front facing camera (1.9 if I remember correctly)
Cons: cheap plastic, although looks good (at start), ugly (at least to me, and reminds a lot to S3 which I despise).
It has a SD card slot, but WP8 has no good management of SD cards, so I consider it a con
Also, Nokia has its premium services like City Lens, and Maps...
This is only my opinnion, possibly some1 else has another...
Good luck with the choice
Lumia all the way, I have an 822 and besides a few personal issues that I have with it; its a great phone. No more Bing Maps.:good:
I have an 8X and an Ativ S. I use the Ativ S as my daily. I much prefer it to the 8X.
The reasons?
1. Feels much nicer in the hand than the 8X.
2. Expandable storage means I don't have to mess around with cloud solutions.
3. Much better battery life.
4. Bigger screen.
5. Physical 'Home' button to wake the device rather than hunt for the on/off button.
6. Better FF camera.
7. Additional benefits such as ability to block callers etc.
Thanks for your input peeps, I imagined the Samsung would have had better build quality and I don't like the plastic feel mentioned, Also the raised home button is not so good for me so I guess that's out of the window, Shame as that large screen is tempting.
I really love the style of the Lumias (800-900) and the 820 seems to have gone away from the traditional Lumia image, Also battery life on the wifes 820 is not too great,
The 920 is the only thing that is on that path and it has a larger screen than the 820 and 8x.
As for the HTC8x I have no idea and never used one but expandable storage of the 820 and Samsung would be handy,
I think my only hope is that rather than upgrading through O2 I try maybe Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U in the hope they will be stocking the 920 on the O2 network early in March, I think 32gb is enough for songs and stuff at least for now,
Failing that I am still a bit stuck, Cheers. :fingers-crossed:
Just had a chat with an O2 advisor for all that it's worth and they said O2 will be stocking the Lumia 920 for my upgrade in March and to keep checking the coming soon link etc, Great news if it's true, If not I guess it will be a sim free handset and a re-mortgage :crying:

Just a suggestion...if you can wait, that is....
If I myself would be upgrading to WP8, I would most definitely wait for Mobile World Congress due to other phones being announced then. There are rumors that Nokia is developing 920 successors and if my hunches are correct, they will be announced next month. -However, realistically they would only be announcing the phones...I'm sure there are a few/several months off from release time.
Soooo, that is just my 2 cents. If you don't really care for that then maybe Samsung is the route to go. However again, this could be entitled as my own opinion...Samsung/HTC seem to focus more on the droid side than what they do with WP7/(8?)...From experience with owning previous WP7 Samsung/HTC devices, don't expect too much in terms of "extra" WP8 satisfaction from these OEM's -compared to Nokia, that is.
Anyway...I wish you luck on your quest to finding a WP for you!
Thanks for all the input, I am going to see if O2 keep to their word for a Lumia 920 in March, Think sticking with Nokia would be the best deal seeing as they are 100% committed to WP, It would also be interesting to see what is around the corner too so for now my options are still open, Things hopefully can only get better now wp8 has had its teething problems and fixes are being made. :good:
Hi All ,
Want to give WP8 a try with a mid-range device as i already have Galaxy S3 and Xperia Mini
best devices i can found suitable to my budget are HTC 8S and Nokia Lumia 620
in a direct comparison the 620 is better as it has a front camera , NFC , Multi-Band WiFi and 8GB of storage while the main better in 8S is it's battery
so which device you recommend , 8S or 620 ?!
or shall i discard the all idea of getting a WP8 device
Thanks in advance
The 2 things u should discard is those crappy Android phones, and get a decent WP8 phone

Back to what really matters, I don't like the 620 because of it's cheap plastic feel and bad eperience with previous Lumia series devices, which doesn't mean this one has the same glitches, but definitely the looks doesn't convince me... Anyway, if you really use video call/conference, the 620 is the way to go. Also the 8GB is another strong selling point in favor of the 8S.
About the 8S, I own one and it feels a superior phone comparing with my S2. Small, but robust and the soft touch really makes it stand out of the competition. The lack of front facing camera isn't a big issue to me because I don't use it, but the 4GB of storage is a limitation... I'm not the kind of person that installs apps for everything or just for fun, I just install what I really need, and so it is enough, but I admit it's a limitation.
Get the 620
100% get a 620 - I have owned both and i can tell you that everything works better on the Nokia. Although I prefer the look and feel of the 8S, the 620 is probably the best budget phone you can buy, with and front facing camera, 8GB storage (+mircoSD support up to 64GB), app services like Nokia Music and Nokia Drive and the size feels really good in the hand. I think the HTC 8S has one big problem - 4GB memory which is not enough as with a clean flash only gives you 1.7GB free space, and you cant install apps on to the SD Card.
I personally bought Lumia 620 few days ago, just to get some feeling where WP8 is, after few years of Android. I have to admit that I like how it feel in hand, sturdy while still possible to use with 1 hand. Personally not sure if I keep this phone (something about WP just keeps rubbing me wrong way) but atleast this gives some nice bonuses with all Nokia added bonuses (lenses, music app etc).
And tbh, if you gonna risk going to WP8 to try it out, go with Lumia 620. You get Nokia Music and Drive+ as nice bonuses to fairly nice phone.

Get the 620, it has nicer colors, front facing camera, 8 gigs of memory, it's a Nokia, Nokia Apps included, replaceable 3.5 mm jack, smaller screen and supersensitive screen as 920 and 820! The only thing that i hate about the 620 is its 1300 mah battery
I dont think the 620 can be considered as a mid range device.....It's nokia's low end lumia phone.....If you're looking for midrange, get he 820...
I see the Nokia Lumia 620 does not have a dedicated section on xda forum, not sure if I can request that of an admin / mod?
I should very much like to buy one for my Dad as they can be had for £150, however I am yet to find a guide / thread on here about getting it unlocked?
may be soon released lumia 720 will filling the gap between 820/620

I can't stress this strongly enough: don't go near the 8S, the 4GB of memory and the WP8 other storage bug mean that you won't be able to install much more than a handful of apps before hitting the dreaded storage limit. I had to uninstall pretty much everything I had on mine just to get Evernote to install and run.
I'm not sure how bad this is on other handsets but the 8S is crippled by it.
The 8S is a beautifully made device, nice in the hand and packing a decent screen and camera, but all of that is negated by the memory problem.
Hi. Take HTC it,s better.

I recently faced the same choice and went for the 620. Happy camper, too (after about a week).
The phone feels nice and heavy, yet it's still compact. The included Nokia software is a nice bonus (works great), not bloatware as expected.
disclaimer: I never owned a high end phone like your SGS3, only the original Samsung Galaxy, LG P500 Optimus One, and the Xperia Mini Pro.
620 better

Definitely Lumia 620 is better than HTC 8S. For starters, the Lumia has 4GB greater internal storage facility. Moreover, it has the Nokia exclusive navigation and camera apps which are not available to the HTC device. The build quality might be better on the HTC (as usual) but you cannot say that Nokia's build quality is faulty or bad. Nokia is reputed for its excellently built devices and the Lumia 620 is no exception. My suggestion is, just go to a store and check out both handsets for real. I am sure you'll pick the Lumia.
nokia FTW
go with nokia!
HTC phones have no quality no more!
see my 8S in attached pic. it got broken in the first 2 days.
it was a simple drop! and then HTC asked me to pay around $260 to replace the screen!
Hello All, Need your suggestion on this.. I am planning to buy a Lumia phone. I have finalised on 2, Lumia 820 and Lumia 720. Kindly let me know which one would be a better choice.

820 is superior in every way.
Thanks for the response... 720 has a Corning Gorilla Glass but 820 doesn't.. Do you think there is a high risk of screen damage when compared to 720.

I can compare my old Lumia 800 (*which I'm sure has gorilla glass) to my 820 & not sure if it's to do with the curved screen but the 800 got a few scratches on the screen however my 820 doesn't have any marks at all with no change in how it's used or stored so for me it makes no difference.
Just to add I don't use screen protectors or cases.
*edit - yes the 800 does have corning gorilla glass.
Paul Thurrott gave his first impressions of the 720 a week ago. Link here.
I went with 720. I don't play anything with my phone.
720 has superior screen. (Touch even with gloves on)
720 even though it has lower MP camera has a lot better image quality and video quality.
720 is a lot smaller in hand. (same size display)

Can someone suggest me a good brand of Case and Scratch guard for the phone?

Lumia 820 has super sensitive touch screen too.
Lumia 820 has 1080p video recording, as opposed to 720p on lumia 720.
Photo and video compare on GSMArena is hardly ever accurate.
As i said, lumia 820 is superior in every single way.
Lumia 720 have ONLY 512 MB RAM !!!!!!!! With this value of RAM you can't install many applications and games.
Lumia 820 have 1GB RAM
L820 is better.
Both of those phones are totally awesome!! (I tried both) I liked the design of the 720 but the more features on the 820, I cant really tell a lot of difference between both, the 820 has the same screen size of the 720 (4.3 inches), but the 820 is a bit chunkier than the 720, the 720 has more of a tall-thin design,
At the end, its all up to you!

If you want a windows phone then Nokia Lumia 820 is a brilliant choice.
It comes with new Windows 8 OS There's Facebook, Twitter, Xbox, Office and Skype built in. There's also the world's best maps, and Nokia Music for completely free and unlimited music mixes. The home screen makes it really easy to organize all your favorite people, apps and information, and there is plenty of apps to download from Windows Phone Store.
This phone is also support 4g. It has Dual core 1.5 ghz processor for fast performance. It has a 8MP camera also has secondary VGA camera, 4.3" screen and 8GB of storage with expandable memory and also have 1 GB RAM.
Hope this helps!
@rahul.kapoor: Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are not the same thing! Lumia 820 comes with WP8, not Win8. Microsoft's branding is stupid enough, but please don't spread confusion.

My impression about Lumia 720
I purchased Nokia Lumia 720 a week ago. I had HTC 7 Trophy which was great but unfortunately the HTC help center was more than awful.
When I come to Nokia 720, I found a whole new experience with dozens of Nokia apps like Music, storage check and even free mail. The performance is quite good. The battery life is about 2 days with WiFi and some calls. Meanwhile, the touch is quite responsive.
My 521 is only 512 megs of ram, but I can run a ton of apps just fine.
Sent from my Nokia 521 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
820 is a better choice because of:
- Better performance (higher CPU, highrt Ram)
- Better display despite the same res. and screen size. You can hand-on both of them to verify.
- You can change the battery cover by your way, your phone will always new.
- Better support! Amber for 820 come earlier than 720 and in future too.
- Both of them have the similar design.
About case and screen protector:
- You do not need case for Lumia 820 because polycarbonate is very good, anti scratch. Let use wireless charging cover to protect camera area.
- Let choose Rinco brand for screen protector.

Hey XDA Users Should I buy the Nokia or the Galaxy S5
If you want to go with windows phone get the htc one m8. If you want to go with android go with the lg g3.
Without more information about how you use a smartphone (or how you would like to use one), whether you're already invested in either the Android or Windows [Phone] marketplaces, and what kinds of things are important to you... there's no way to tell you.
The 1020 has by far the better camera, and will probably have better battery life.
The S5 has a bigger and better screen, and more features.
The S5 has much better specs (but Android needs better specs for a good experience than WP8 does).
it depends...
It highly depends on what you want, galaxy s5 probably has more features better battery backup (the difference is marginal though and depends on usage) but lumia 1020 has a better camera and a more stable OS.
What do you prefer, Android or WP. I use lumia 925 and i have used Android before. I prefer WP now but it has its own limitation which however should not be a dealbreaker. I prefer WP for its simplicity, stability and its improving everyday

HTC has got a poorer camera compared to other high-end devices, find lumia 930 instead. i have little or no objection about lg g3
Don't buy either. The 1020's only benefit is the camera and they're releasing a new 1020 like phone within the next 4 months most likely. The rest of the hardware in the 1020 is far from impressive. The 1520 and 930 camera is not better than the Lumia 1020 camera.. but it IS better than the S5 camera, by quite a margin since the Cyan update! Only to get better with Denim. Remember the Lumia 1020 has a few other drawbacks too, like a really slow camera (amazing pictures, but that thing is SLOW).
The S5 is a phone with a lot of partially functioning gimmicks and Android. It's only a consideration if you REALLY need specific things Android offers over WP8.1 But since 8.1 and 8.1 Update the list is shrinking rapidly. The LG L3 isn't much different from the Samsung S5 honestly, besides having a little less bloatware and a different setup for camera and all. Also the Samsung is a little smaller, which I personally prefer. 5.1" is really the maximum for me. I also prefer the amoled of the samsung over the LG screen. Sure the LG has a lot of pixels, but battery suffers for it a little and the difference between the samsung and LG .. I just couldn't see clearly enough to overcome the benefits of the amoled screen. And you won't notice the difference between 3GB and 2GB of ram. The LG is a phone that fights with specs, where they don't matter all that much for real world performance.
The HTC One M8 For Windows Phone (wtf name) looks OK, but it's also quite a lot more expensive than the 930, while offering very little benefits. If those differences are important enough for you, go for the HTC. But me personally, I hate the HTC design as it's way too geeky, while I love the green 930. Also camera is quite important to me, so that makes the HTC not an option anymore (the camera really is awful compared to Galaxy S5 and Lumia 930).
Like many I was a long time Android user and for some really weird reason I suddenly came home with a Lumia 925. After using that for a while, I just can't go back to Android. But if you're not spoiled by WP yet, your options are still open. I wouldn't hesitate for a second anymore and get a Lumia 930. It obviously offers everything the 1020 does and a lot more. Couple it with a DT-903 with the breathing light and it's the best you can get right now. (http://www.nokia.com/global/products/accessory/dt-903/)
Thanks
Thanks for all the replies but I am going to stick with android I just need help with the best android phone should I get the s5 or the 1+1
Or should I wait
To get the Note 4 Cause the Note 4 looks amazing in battery and performence :highfive:
Where are you guys
Hmm? no reply in a while oh well I guess the Note 4 it is then :good:
Note 4 or lumia 930 is the question you should be asking
And it's a tough choice but probably the Note 4 wins
--------------------------------------------
My house phone's better than your iPhone.
I think Lumia 1020 is outdated. You should consider recent models like 930 or 830.
Just to inform you folks that today I have successfully swapped the mainboard of a display damaged Lumia 930 to my Lumia Icon. So the mainboards are interchangeable and it's working like a charm :good:
So anybody who's using Lumia Icon outside of Verizon network and wants to get an official WP8.1. , working MMS messages and knows how to perform the swap, here's your chance. Just look for display damaged Lumia 930s. They're pretty cheap since it costs quite a lot to replace the display.
