for people that are getting to the point of "enter a password" for the device to decrypt, it means that force_no_encrypt successfully got put into your system, but power off at this part and boot into your bootloader and go into recovery mode, then do a wipe. That boot.img of the no_force_encrypt is already installed, once you restart the phone it should be all good and your phone should not have encryption and you can check that in "security"

Yeah, once you've got that flashed, you'll need to do a factory reset. If you're using TWRP, you'll also need to hit "format data" so you don't get stuck in an endless loop where it asks for a password and a factory reset.

I'm trying to do a factory reset on my 8GB Nexus 7. It was rooted and unlocked on stock 4.2.1 with stock bootloader/recovery. When I boot into recovery, hold power and tap volume up, I get the menu and pick factory data reset, then select Yes to start the wipe. It then starts to show Formatting /data... and does nothing. I've let it sit for an hour; no change. I've tried temporarily booting TWRP and wiping data that way...same thing - say's it's wiping, but left it for over an hour and it appears to make no progress.
Next Steps? I've tried doing the fastboot flash commands to restore stock but still run into the reason for the factory reset - I'm getting the "enter your password to decrypt" message but none of my passwords are working; apparently factory reset is only way to fix.
go to the main device settings, backup and reset, then press factory data reset.

Can't get into the device settings, hence the attempt to wipe data in recovery.

Have a tool suggestion? Whether I follow the fastboot guide to restoring to stock or use a tool, I still receive the "Enter password to decrypt storage" message; only way around that is to do a factory reset. I haven't seen any tools that allow me to do a factory reset.

ok, I think I know the answer, but checking for any other ideas. For some reason my phone was trying to unlock in my pocket, and of course it failed 10 times, and says it is going to wipe phone. It reboots to recovery, but fails dm verification, I assume because it is rooted. I select reboot and it goes back to welcome, says sd card is removed, and it is going to wipe phone because of failed login, and reboots again. Question is best way to get out of this loop. If I do factorey reset from system recovery, will I lose root? Can I get it again? or do I need to refresh my brain and remember how to odin and install a rooted stock rom? any ideas on what would be easiest?
Just did factory reset, kept root, even kept all my blacked out apps
Just run repair assistant

I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my device but then recovery mode wouldn't load; it just gave me the exclamation mark android and wouldn't go into recovery. So, I downloaded TWRP to have a recovery that would load. I then attempted to let the system update itself to 5.1 and it went into TWRP recovery and didn't update. I decided to download the shamu 5.1 from google dev and flash it from the bootloader. I kept getting the error "could not allocate ######### bytes" so I thought I must need to erase all the partitions and load them back one by one. I flashed boot, cache, recovery, and user data, but got the same error on the system partition. I tried to enter recovery to attempt to wipe the data and just got the exclamation mark android so I thought I should lock and unlock the bootloader to force it to clear its data. I locked the bootloader but it will not unlock now; it says "Check 'Allow OEM Unlock' in Developer Options" but the phone will not boot past the google logo. Any advise?
Jesus, error after error there. You should have stopped and asked advice before carrying on.
Well if you haven't got TWRP anymore, you're screwed. You'll have to send it back to moto/google for repair. There's no way out if you haven't got TWRP.
In regards to the mistakes...
- standard recovery gives exclamation mark. Press volume up and power to get to the menu
- you cannot update officially OTA if you are modified at all, including custom recovery
- the error about system was because your fastboot is out of date
- once you lock the boot loader, you can not unlock without a booting OS.
- if you have a broken OS and stock recovery, you can not fix the OS.
Ouch. Yes, this is pretty much a prime example of what not to do in each situation.
As @cam30era always notes, to enter stock recovery, when dead Android appears with red exclamation point, HOLD power and press volume up once.
Sorry you lost your device but if you had read a little before jumping into bad decisions, this could have been avoided. Hope you get a working device soon and next time, ask for help.
ouch..
yea, time to try and RMA it.
I recently unlocked and rooted my nexus 6, installed twrp for back up. Then I wiped before making a back up. No I have no os on phone. Is there a fix or am I screwed?
Try using fastboot to flash factory images
Just grab a factory image and flash it.
Remember wiping a device does just that. Wipes it clean
The thing is, I can boot into recovery, but my phone does not show up on my laptop. So I am not sure how to load a factory image. Thx in advance for all the help.
If it doesn't connect while in recovery, uninstall/reinstall drivers.

Boot in to recovery, choose reboot system, TWRP will say, no OS installed are you sure? answer yes / swipe, TWRP will ask/say your device is not rooted, do you want to root it? Swipe to confirm.
Reboot your phone, pressing power and volume down, choose recovery mode again, your phone should show up on your lappy.
If not, re-install drivers - adb/fastboot as mentioned before.

I'v got a problem after flashing los16. After the nexus 6 reboot I've got a screen where I have to enter the password to start android. After that there is a screen that show's "encryption unsuccessful... the password is correct but your data are damaged...you have to do a factory reset..."
After the factory reset the phone starts automatically and ends in the same screen
Did anyone get this message? I'm unable to boot into lineageOS.
Twrp version 3.2.3.0
Thanks for your help
In twrp, select wipe-> format data/ factory reset. And that's it!
