Updates are designed to fix past issues, at least in theory. Sometimes however, things do go wrong. Such was the case with the Android KitKat 4.4.3 update on the Nexus line, and history seems to be repeating itself now with the Android KitKat 4.4.4 update too. This time however, the affected phone seems to be the Motorola Moto X. Apparently, multiple Moto X users have posted complains on the Moto X boards about poor battery life following the KitKat 4.4.4 update. The firmware seems to have done more wrong than right this time around, seriously affecting the phone’s battery life.
The problems come from various sources, such as data cache problems with applications that cause additional drain, poor network signal which also affects battery life due to constant signal searching and even problems with overheating. In addition, the WiFi signal receiving seems to be affected, as well as the carrier frequencies, which all add up to considerably hit the phone’s power reserves. There are of course temporary workarounds to keep a lid on things for now, but if you’ve already upgraded to KitKat 4.4.4, you’ll likely be facing some issues that can’t really be solved until Motorola launches a new firmware version. Using Airplane Mode can help with network signal search drains, while setting your WiFi to stop connecting to weak signal networks may also be of some use.
If you haven’t updated your Moto X to the latest version of Android KitKat 4.4.4, we recommend you hold off for now. Android L is just around the corner, and it should bring some great battery management features to the Moto X, as it has a built-in battery management tool, as well as Project Volta. So far, problems have yet to appear with the Motorola Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra, which have received the same update. The Motorola Moto G and Moto E have also received Android KitKat 4.4.4, but it’s unclear if battery issues affect those models too at this time.

I don't have problems since the update. The battery seems better than 4.4.2.

IMO, battery life has never been as good on the Moto X as it was in 4.4
more of a baseband problem rather than the firmware problem?
Can you post the screen shots of the android 4.4.4 update. Also please upload the ota update zip file. Thanks in advance
Already in another thread.

No trouble for me too.
I'm using the update 4.4.4 for a week (I receive it before everyone, don't know why - my OTA file has been shared), and my battery life is BETTER than before !
Everything works fine. As every other french people reveived the update
With any new update comes growing pains. It takes a day or two and sometimes even a week before an OTA settles fully. Don't jump the gun just because your experience is bad and it's only been a few hours.

Nope! I don't remember it taking this long for the soak last time.

Sensationalism. Android L isn't right around the corner. It's months away, and it's such a large update that Motorola needs to do extensive testing with their apps and integrated system functions to maintain proper functionality.
No issues with battery life for me either. Remove apps from your phone if you start having idle drain issues, especially those with push notifications, as those are handled by Android OS.
i've had zero reboots but i have had worse battery wife while the device is in use, but much improved battery life while the device is "sleeping". however i have had consistent wifi issues. not sure if its my router or the device specifically, but if i turn off/on wifi, it seems to resolve itself.
I'm having them
I'm having the battery life issue, and its annoying :crying:
before, it used to stay literally a full day, and now it will start beeping by sunset.
I'm seriously thinking about downgrading it back to 4.4.2.
what do you think guys?!! should I?!!!!
I'm currently looking into the Droid Turbo as I need options on a new phone. My Note 4 has been replaced twice, on my third phone with horrible screen issues. Had the iP6+, really bad screens and iOS sucks. Came from a year with the Moto X and it served me well, but bad battery life and bad burn-in forced me to get a new phone.
Needless to say, I'm limited on phone choices currently. I originally looked at the Turbo when it came out but the lack of brightness and no voice/data turned me off. But since it got the AC 1.0 update, that's a step in the right direction. I've also been told that the brightness issue has been resolved as well, but no one can seem to confirm it.
So, those of you that have had the Turbo, would you buy it again? How's the real battery life? Voice/data working great? How about screen issues, as far as discoloration or uniformity?
Thanks!
32 hours on, 4 hours of screen on time.. Still have 26% remaining. No regrets.
Anyone else?
I am really loving this phone. I had a couple small complaints, but they were patched with the last update. Battery life is awesome. Simultaneous voice and data working now. The screen is gorgeous. I would definitely buy again .If you need any more convincing watch this. His reviews are always spot on.
Battery life is phenomonal
I can't use voice and data and I took the update, tried it just last night.
Coming from a Galaxy S3... both me and my wife. Both of us are very happy. Screen is plenty bright. Not seeing any obvious screen uniformity issues... I haven't been "looking" for them, but I tend to notice things like that quickly, so it's good enough, at least. Battery life is far better than the S3, as expected... I guess I'm not a heavy user in that sense. Certainly would recommend this device (or the MotoX).

Have you enabled HD Calling? It won't work until you have done that.
Non HD call quality with Advanced Calling enabled is a little quirky. The last update addressed all the issues mentioned in early reviews AFAICT. I get 33 hours battery life on average and 4 1/2 hours screen on.
Definitely would buy again.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
My wife and I also came from the S3 and we love this phone, no regrets at all.
I am very happy with mine. I see no issues related to screen brightness. VOLTE and data work just fine. I did have a speaker issue with my first device, which was among the first batch produced. I had it replaced with one from a newer batch and have had no issues thus far. If you are particular about your devices, I think there are few options that are "perfect" in their quality control. The devices are too complicated, with too may features, to expect that they will all leave the factory perfect.
I have to first tell you I had the SG S4, HTC M7, HTC M8, as my previous Android phones before I
switched to the iPhone 6 plus. As soon s I saw this Galaxy S6 I could't wait to get back to Android.
I really hate Apple and the way you have to use itunes to do anything on the phone.
Received my new SGS6 edge 128 gb sapphire black and it is fantastically built and the perfect size.
That's where all the joy ends. Lets all face the facts, the battery life on this phone stinks. Yes I am a
very experienced Android user and disabled ALL the bloat. Then you have to star disabling features
like VOLTE, wifi, push services etc.... Why the hell would you pay 1,000 for a phone that in order to
barely make a business day power wise you have to disable so many of the features? With that said
and a ton of stuff disabled the phone barely last 12 hours. That is not acceptable. The iPhone plus goes
2 full days (48 hours) with everything on before I have to charge. Before you start asking, yes I did multiple factory
resets, I did the clear cache etc. Like I said I am very experienced with Android phones.
I was so disappointed in the G6 with its sub par battery life. I still hate my iPhone and am looking
for the next Android release (Sony or LG) to see if they are any better. I like the Note 4 but I believe the
international version does not have LTE on ATT.
If anyone has any other Android suggestions please advise me so I can escape the Apple lock.

Have you looked at the HTC M9? I have the M9 currently and it's a pretty good phone. We already have a lot of devs making custom roms and kernels.
I am interested in the s6 which is why I'm looking at this forum, but the M9 is a really nice phone. I'm never satisfied, I have an addiction, a very expensive addiction.
Have you tried charging several times and bleeding the battery out after a couple of days? I noticed it wasn't really impressive batt life..then I disabled the at&t apps, cleared cache from recovery, disabled WiFi scanning, use power saving mode and I can get through the entire day, gym, and charge it at night with around 30% left..I'd give it a week or 2

Sameer,
Yes I did run down to 0 and then charged full, reset cache and there was only a marginal gain.
This is a business phone and I cannot be in the situation of worrying if my battery is going to
die while I am out with customers.
I will monitor this forum to see if any software update fixes the problem.
BTW I did get the Samsung push update and the Google services update.
So frustrating because I really wanted to make this phone work.

Lyall,
I loved the M7 and M8 and battery life was outstanding. The only thing that was
bad was the camera. So I have 2 questions:
1 - How is battery life
2 - How is the camera (I read not very good things about it)
I had the Developer edition on both the M7 and M8.

Battery life is acceptable. I listen to podcasts and do light browsing all day at work and my battery usually drops between 3 & 5% per hour. If I watch videos or play a game the battery drops a lot faster. I would say the battery life is about the same as the m8.
The camera has improved greatly with the new firmware updates from HTC, but it's still probably not as good as the s6. One thing for sure is, the camera on the m9 is definitely better than the m8.

The battery is an easy fix, update google play services to the latest 64bit version and then kill it dead a few times and use the quick charger to charge it to 100%. I am having zero issues making it thru the day and then some.

Designgears,
I did exactly what you are suggesting. The only thing that fixed was the cell standby usage.
Before that update the battery was unusable, so yes that helped.
If I watched any kind of streaming video, you tube, nexflix etc, the battery went down unbelievable.
I had a video conference for 20 minutes the battery dropped 25%. Any stress on the phone the battery
drops like crazy. I really believe it may be a lollypop issue but I cant justify over 1,000 dollars on a phone
that won't last the day. Especially if its not unlocked with software updates few and far between.
Should I try the International version? If anything the updates will be quicker. Do you think without
any bloat ( I did disable all the bloat) will the battery be better?

Having lost both my trusty S2 and Nokia E6 to water damage (repaired, worked for a while, but eventually both became unusable), and absolutely hating the life on S2 and loving it on E6 (and old backup E72 especially) I'm very stoked to finally get a waterproof android with capable life given the phone that it is. Looking up roms/tweaks/root while killing time for tomorrow's mail.
IF anyone else is a data minimalist, music enthusiast, and traveler (aka possible no recharge, read about the ultra saver mode already and will likely use that one mainly) how is your experience with battery life? How about waterproofing?

I dont worry much about battery life since i have a charger every night. But mine is good. I run TMS5 right now. Hope the seller I got it from didn't update. He said he hasn't in a few months, but that sounds close for comfort given 5 was released in april and phone would blast that notification.
I say as long as you don't feel like you HAVE TO root...you'll be pleased with this device even if its been upgraded to 5.0 already. I've had mine for a few months now and I upgraded to 5.0 (without knowing the full implications) after a couple days of getting it. I do admit it would be nice to able to disable the charger cover nag notification and to be able to at least have to option to run XGELS again...but thats not a game changer for me. I'm coming from a GS3. Of all the devices I've had on AT&T this one has been the most issue and quirk-free so far.
I usually run in Power Saving Mode (performance), toggle Location on only when I'm not at home, toggle bluetooth on when needed, have FB (with some notifications enabled), FB messenger, ESPN (with notifications for like 4 teams), email polls every hour on one account.
I'm a software dev (not Android tho) so I listen to and stream ALOT of music M thru F while I pound and click away. If I'm on wifi all day I can stream 6 hours of music and get 5 hours of screen time easily and consistently with %30 to %35 left after the end of the day.
One of these days I'm going to go balls out and TRY to kill the thing in one day. Haven't been able to do it yet with my version of heavy usage. YMMV.
Looks like 4.4.2, getting the pre-rooted 5, flashfire, towel, etc.
I think the battery life is pretty good once u disable some bloat. I'm on the 5.0 Ota unfortunately and my s5 can get threw a full day with a single charge.
And... I'm coming from an s3 that had a zero lemmon 7000 mah battery.. it lasted nearly a week lol
But, I'm still pleased, wish I could root but I'm getting by ok... in all I'm not a huge fan of lolipop l, mainly the new restrictions on a few things implemented. Lolipop would be great rooted tho. Like the other guy said tho, not a deal breaker
I enjoy mine and sure u will as well
Waterproof, dunno haven't tried but from what I have seen it seems to do pretty well. I'd say it's sure to survive a splash in the tub or something

So, my first Note 7 was great. I had none of the reported lag or battery life/battery drain problems. I replaced it last Friday. The replacement phone is set up identically, but my battery life is much worse. I have yet to hit 4 hours SOT, with my max being around 3. On the old one I always got at least 4. In battery usage, Android System is at the top of the list, and CPU total is 6.5hr out of the 12 it's been off the charger. Nothing has changed so I have no idea why this would be. Is there a fix for this? Has anyone else had this issue with their replacement?

Unfortunately, it's a wide spread issue. Many people are reporting battery issues, such as drain and slower charging. All signs are pointing to these new batteries being jank. Either that, or built in software changes in the firmware to intentionally neuter battery performance for safety measures.
I am having the same issue bad battery drain.

Let me know how it goes. With my original phone I was getting the best battery life I've ever gotten from a phone (the Nexus 6 previously held that title). Very disappointed that the replacement doesn't last like the original.
same for me... any reason known ?
My fast charging seems to not be working, at least I don't think so. Worked perfect on my v1 note 7. Now, no lie it's charges quicker with fast charging turned off. Found that strange. And my battery life is horrible cause I'm always on my phone so nothing weird there lol
Not sure if this will be relevant for anyone else:
I found in another thread (that I cannot find for the life of me now...) some talk about an issue with Oculus Home eating up a lot of resource while attempting to install itself, failing and continuously retrying. I thought my phone was broken. I went from full to 20% in 5 hours extremely warm the entire time, typing in any app was painful. It prevented the gear fit 2 plugin from updating causing all sorts of weirdness with S health and my gear fit 2. So much so that I called Samsung tech support for the first time (great btw).
I got rid of everything Oculus related on my phone and now it feels brand new.
That app was like cancer it seems
