[Q] Looking To Buy This, Have Some Questions

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase this phone for my girlfriend (she is still using the droid incredible 4g lte)! I just had a couple questions that I'd very much appreciate if I could get some insight on:
1. Is the claim for 48 hours of battery life valid?
2. Has a software update been released to allow data and voice simultaneously yet? (This is a make or break)
3. Overall, how do you guys like the phone from a performance perspective i.e. speed of opening apps etc.?
4. Anything I should know such as little annoyances or nuances currently?

I'll answer the first three (from my perspective, of course). The fourth is going to be up to you in looking at the other threads - lots of positives and negatives depending on your perspective.
1) The 48 hours of battery life is definitely NOT VALID. Of course this is completely dependent on your usage. That said, I am a very heavy user and I am getting considerably more than a full day. I usually pull the device off the charger at about 3:00am (don't judge me - I get up that early to hit the gym). When I plug it back in at about 9:00pm I am at about 25% remaining. That is 75% in 18 hours, which I am VERY happy with.
2) The Volte software update has not yet been released. Also, keep in mind that when it is released by Moto/Verizon, it will only work in Volte areas (but you probably already knew that).
3) The performance of this phone (again from my perspective) is absolutely incredible. Now if one of the really smart devs (I'm talking to you @jcase) actually figures out how to root this device, then this will be THE device of the year! Again, from my perspective.

Thanks for the reply! In reference to question 2 my girlfriend and I live in north NJ 20 minutes outside of NYC so I think we're good on VoLTE coverage. Is there any word on when the software update is coming out?

As always, the standard VZW answer is "by the end of the year"... The initial update released by VZW was NOT for VoLTE.

Yeah should have guessed... Oh well, we're going to the VZW store today so she can mess with it. She'll probably take a look at the G3, S5, One M8, and Turbo.

Good luck! It is a beast of a phone. And will be even more so when "L" is released for the Turbo. I'm just hoping and praying for root even though it may never happen...

Thanks! I have the One M8 which came with a locked bootloader, a dev had perm root on that thing within 3 weeks I believe! My girlfriend will not let me root her phone haha she doesn't want me doing anything to it that could brick it etc. (although I never have bricked any of my own phones) oh well!

I had the m8 as well. It was rooted and running GPE within 10 minutes of me getting it home. But this phone is actually amazingly responsive even with the VZW bloat (disabled, of course). I just want root so I can run Xposed and Gravitybox. Then all will be right with the world as far as I'm concerned.

1. The claim is 48 hours of "mixed use" That is kind of subjective based on what your definition of mixed use is. If you plan on streaming music, watching videos, gaming for a few hours or even sitting on surfing the web constantly, then, no, you're not going to get 48 hours. But if you use it as a smart PHONE. A few calls, texts, use the GPS to find an address, listen to a little music, a google search or two then throw it on the counter when you get home then I think you could get 48 hours out of it with probably 2 - 3 hours of screen time. To be honest, I can get that out of my M8, G3 or the wife's s5. I feel that the combination of the QHD screen, the active notifications and the always listening features work to drag the battery down faster than it should. They claim the active notifications are light on battery but I feel that they are not. For whatever reason the Turbo seems to have higher than normal idle battery drain (had it on my droid maxx too)

3. It's really smooth and fluid. The bloat has very little to do with the overall performance of the phone. The Moto launcher is pretty light. Not at all like Touch Wiz or Sense and worlds away from LG's awful launcher. Benchmarks are right up there with the S5, M8 and G3.
4. The moto droids are a different beast from the other smart phones with the active notifications, always listening features so if you've always had HTC or Samsung it will take a little getting used to.
The biggest problem I have with the droids is they are decidedly unsexy; it's almost too vanilla of an experience for me

Major crossroad with Nexus 6

Hey guys, looking for some input here.
Im coming up on the 14 day return policy for the nexus 6, but im really thinking of returning it and going with the note 4.
The only issue i have with the phone is battery life. My phone seems to gulp it down. Now i do have many battery draining features turned off and standby time is excellent. Its when i actually use the phone i get massive drain, whether it be facebooking, web browsing, or playing games, the phone loses a lot of life! My wife used the camera this past weekend for 20 minutes according to the stats and my percentage dropped 25%from 80% to 55% within 1/2 hour!
My brightness is also on adaptive at 35-40%. For the life of me, it just seems i cant stop the battery drain.
I know going to the stock note 4 battery is about the same, but Zerolemon is releasing the note 4 10000 mah battery later this month. I had the same battery on my note 3 and loved it, ive never killed that battery. Yes, itll be a brick, yes but im thinking id prefer battery over function.
I do love the nexus, especially the screen size and the front facing speakers, and i will lose those with the note, but having a dead phone by 6pm makes those features useless. Yes, i could charge the phone halfway through the day, but i was spoiled with the note 3 extended battery.
SO my question is, should i chance the nexus 6 and hope upcoming updates solve the drain, or should i dump it and go with the note 4 and extended battery.

TL;DR NExus 6 battery dies too quick, return and get note 4 with zero lemon.

I went from the Note 4 to the Nexus 6 and battery life is about the same. I was actually pretty disappointed with the battery life of the Note 4 considering i had a Note 2 where the battery lasted FOREVER! I had originally decided that i would bypass the Nexus 6 and get the Note 4 instead, and at first i loved it but after having to deal with constant lag and dealing with samsung's crappy radios i'm glad i picked up the Nexus 6 (Note 4 is my new alarm clock at home)

It seems that your mind is already made up.. just get the Note 4

Are you using stock ROM or rooted and/or flashed? Sounds unusual for stock. I'd check your network settings and make sure your preferred network type and access point name are correct for your carrier but if standby time is good that probably isn't it anyway. I'd look for an app which gives more detailed battery usage information and go from there.

after going through an S4 and Note 3.. Im glad to be away from samsung. They have amazing hardware specs but drag it down with their crappy touchwiz. It's really unfortunate, the s-pen is pretty great.

im actually fully stock, with just a few apps. I have checked for wake locks and draining apps and down have any. Actually all the apps i had are the same as the note 3 i had. Nothing new.
Im on att and my prefered network is LTE, changed it from global a few days ago.
It seems the biggest drain is during use, not standby!

I'm in the same boat you are. I'd get a samsung device today if they just got rid of TouchWiz and just went stock AOSP.

That is normal on any device. That battery for me is decent. However don't forget that you just got a new device. People always use new devices more initially before they settle into a normal use rhythm. Also I wouldn't worry much about the return date because this device is so hard to get that if you sold it yourself you would probably make money on it. Just give it time.

It's possible that something is wrong with YOUR nexus. I get 5 hours of sot with a stock rooted rom and greenify. Once I decrypt, ROM and kernel I'd expect 6 to 8 easy.

The battery life is obviously important, so it is certainly a dice roll on your part.
For me, I have a Note 2 and waiting for N6 to be available for me. I am so sick of Samsung forced apps and touchwiz. It's not rooted, but I don't feel like I should have to root it in order to get a basic OS without the addons being forced on me by the manufacturer, and then have the warranty voided because of it.

theres no such thing as "typical". we all use our devices differently, and have differing signal quality. you can really ever compare battery stats with another person because of that. only you know how you use your device. so the question is going to get changed.. by how you use your device, and your local signal quality, are you happy with your battery life?

Did you allow google to auto restore settings, apps, data at first boot up? Coming from a different device and OS version could have synced something funky that is causing this. I have noticed this before. Consequentially I never use this feature. I always set every device up fresh (same if switching Roms too in my book). I would try a factory reset at the very least. I have been trying hard to kill my n6 today with no luck, already 12 up time 22% battery left with 4½ hours SOT. Battery stats say I have 3 hours of life left.
Have google now on and going, 2 email clients syncing, g+ syncing, Tapatalk syncing, roughtly 4 active hangouts going, and updated 8+ apps from play store.
Been actively trying to duplicate a power day on this thing. With you experience, something is off with your description and worth experimenting some.

I did do the wireless sync due to some apps needing to recover data.
Maybe I'll try a reset and manually download the apps.

Ive had my phone for a couple weeks now. The first week I had it obviously I was playing around with it a ton and trying different Qi chargers to see how they work. My battery life was unimpressive at 8-10 hours. I was hoping to have at least a full days worth of time based on everything this is supposed to have.
Then I tried a couple things. I turned off the stupid fit application. I ran the battery all the way down until the phone literally turned off. Then I used only wall USB chargers to charge it up.
Now with the same type of usage 3-4 hours of screen time, Im typically getting at least 18-24 hours of battery life. I even managed 30 hours once. Anyway, Im extremely happy with the way this phone is holding up now. Obviously YMMV but I think if you find the right tweaks for the way you use it, it should last longer than you expect.

So Far Today by your stats i will give you mine.
@ 27% Battery Left after flashing Stock a 1.5 days ago rooted/decrypted
Screen is at 4:30:09 @ 42% Usage
Phone Radio 15:30:41 @ 4% usage
Wifi Active 3:24:12 1% usage
Held Awake 2:23:26 0% usage
App Usage 53%
I also have a persistent System (ADSPD) drain that while i don't know how much its draining app sucker puts it at 13.8% vs the next drainer of Android System at 7.3%
Just guessing maybe you are in a poorer signal area than I? Basing that on your phone radio using much more of the percentage?
For what its worth you saw my screen on time. GSAM is predicting 6h 58m total for the day if i run it to 0.

Finally getting me one, stoked for the battery life!

Having lost both my trusty S2 and Nokia E6 to water damage (repaired, worked for a while, but eventually both became unusable), and absolutely hating the life on S2 and loving it on E6 (and old backup E72 especially) I'm very stoked to finally get a waterproof android with capable life given the phone that it is. Looking up roms/tweaks/root while killing time for tomorrow's mail.
IF anyone else is a data minimalist, music enthusiast, and traveler (aka possible no recharge, read about the ultra saver mode already and will likely use that one mainly) how is your experience with battery life? How about waterproofing?

I dont worry much about battery life since i have a charger every night. But mine is good. I run TMS5 right now. Great rom hope yours don't come with the 5.0 pre installed ( no root, no way to downgrade yet ). Here's my battery life with very little phone usage as I've been camping and don't worry about a phone when I'm camping.

Very cool. And isn't there a way to flash stock 4.4.2 via odin or something? Like soft-unbrick kinda deal.

Not if 5.0 is pre installed or you take the ota. Unless your getting the active. I think the s5 active can downgrade from 5.0.

Hope the seller I got it from didn't update. He said he hasn't in a few months, but that sounds close for comfort given 5 was released in april and phone would blast that notification.

I say as long as you don't feel like you HAVE TO root...you'll be pleased with this device even if its been upgraded to 5.0 already. I've had mine for a few months now and I upgraded to 5.0 (without knowing the full implications) after a couple days of getting it. I do admit it would be nice to able to disable the charger cover nag notification and to be able to at least have to option to run XGELS again...but thats not a game changer for me. I'm coming from a GS3. Of all the devices I've had on AT&T this one has been the most issue and quirk-free so far.
I usually run in Power Saving Mode (performance), toggle Location on only when I'm not at home, toggle bluetooth on when needed, have FB (with some notifications enabled), FB messenger, ESPN (with notifications for like 4 teams), email polls every hour on one account.
I'm a software dev (not Android tho) so I listen to and stream ALOT of music M thru F while I pound and click away. If I'm on wifi all day I can stream 6 hours of music and get 5 hours of screen time easily and consistently with %30 to %35 left after the end of the day.
One of these days I'm going to go balls out and TRY to kill the thing in one day. Haven't been able to do it yet with my version of heavy usage. YMMV.

Looks like 4.4.2, getting the pre-rooted 5, flashfire, towel, etc.

I think the battery life is pretty good once u disable some bloat. I'm on the 5.0 Ota unfortunately and my s5 can get threw a full day with a single charge.
And... I'm coming from an s3 that had a zero lemmon 7000 mah battery.. it lasted nearly a week lol
But, I'm still pleased, wish I could root but I'm getting by ok... in all I'm not a huge fan of lolipop l, mainly the new restrictions on a few things implemented. Lolipop would be great rooted tho. Like the other guy said tho, not a deal breaker

Waterproof, dunno haven't tried but from what I have seen it seems to do pretty well. I'd say it's sure to survive a splash in the tub or something

standy/idle w limited usage ~2 days. if i use it normally itll last most of the day. this is w zerolemon stock size replacement.

I can vouch for the quality of zero lemon products. I'd say it's a fair bet the zero lemmon stock size battery is better quality than the Samsung one

To date, this post is for anyone that has had this phone from november december area. I have always struggled with battery dwindling on my phones. The LG G2 lasts 1.5 hours of screen time now on AOSP when it used to push almost 5hrs, and my girlfriends older droid razr m went from 3 hrs of screen time to a struggling 1 hour. I would wait for the next nexus but i hear its coming from hauei whoever they are. Im not comfortable going with that company yet. I have been looking at the Sony z3 (or waiting for the new Us versions z4 with the 2k screen) but i am abe to get this phone for 380 through my work. How is the stamina of the battery 7-8 months later?

Had the phone since early December, no battery dwindling here, even with Quick Charge. I'm on Verizon, and I use LTE, never WiFi. I normally get 2-3 hours of screen time. If I use WiFi I can get 4 hours or so. It easily lasts me an entire day, but I struggle to get through 1.5-2 days. Keep in mind I do not underclock or undervolt. I am running AOSiP ROM and have Lean Kernel as my Kernel. But I don't underclock.
I did run the phone completely stock for about a month and got about the same battery life, maybe even slightly better. I have over 120 apps on my phone, and I have the 64GB White version. Let me know if you have any other questions!
P.S. For $380 you could easily buy the phone and sell it in a couple of months and lose nothing and still upgrade to a newer phone.

Its the best phone i ever had hands down and with a powerbank or using the quickcharger you will never run out of juice. Besides that its fast, responsive, has a great screen and dual speakers so overall i can recommend to anyone who appreciates vanilla. If you want bloat get a Sony, Samsung or LG BTW my screenontime is about 3-4 hours depending on usage and i think Huawei makes some pretty damn good phones like the Mate 7 for instance.

My carrier (T-Mobile) in the Netherlands just rolled out LTE where i live and coverage isn`t optimal yet (HSPA+). I`am about half the day on wifi and half on LTE (HSPA+).

All great info. No bloatware on the z3 international, and it's certified ip68 were the nexus can take a dunk but not certified. I agree 380 is good price it was a debate of this or s6 a and I'm leaning to this one

I couldn't agree more. It is the best phone I ever had too. Recently I have purchased a Qi charger for the office, so i do not even use the turbocharger that sits at home. No battery deterioration noticed. Oh, and I never use the car charger.
WiFi / LTE - 50/50.

This is the best phone I've had as well, have had it since it came out end of 2014, on the Verizon network the entire time.
I'm on LTE 10-13 hours a day, and WiFi a few hours, the battery will last me from 6:30am - 10pm everyday, without charging at all, and being around 15%-25% when I am about to put it on charge during bedtime.
The phone is rooted, on AOSIP ROM, with AOSIP default kernal. The battery life is amazing. I get between 4-5 hours of screen on time. I am currently at 61% battery (6:30am to 3pm now), with 2 hours SOT.
I use Servicely to hibernate apps while phone is asleep. I also use 'App Ops' to disable 'Location' and 'Keep Awake' access for apps that don't need the access. I have Google Now and Facebook running normal all day, and WhatsApp is my preferred method of texting throughout the day.

Coming from a Galaxy Note 3, I'm a bit disappointed by the screen and battery life. Color reproduction is kinda weird and the screen is too dim in bright sunlight for me. I can live with the relatively weak battery but the screen is just...disappointing. Still, I love it and felt never so happy with a device!

Six Days of Battery Life?

Hi folks,
I just ordered a Nexus 6.
I currently have a m7vzw (Verizon HTC One M7), and cut my teeth here rigging s-off and root, and then trying many different ROMS for it. My needs are pretty simple and, as you can see from the title, I like long battery life.
I currently run Vanilla AOSP 4.4.4 and minimal edition gapps. Light email push from gmail and to MS Outlook for work. Very little surfing and phone use. No extraneous apps, and no social networking apps. I typically need to charge up every 6-7 days.
Any suggestions for some ROMS to consider here? I never exceeded 3 days on my current phone using 5.x with the same usage and configuration. I quit trying after a while.

Errrr... I guess if you leave WiFi and data off you might get a couple days if you don't use screen often? Most get 3-6hrs screen on time to give a day to a day and a half?
Probably not getting 6 days, if you are, your spending way to much for your phone, because you obviously are not using it [emoji14]

Is there a better place I could post the question? Does anyone here have the expertise to provide useful answers? Or does the sarcasm indicate that this device has stupidly low battery life, regardless of which ROM is used?

I fun stock 5.1.1 unencrypted, with Lean Kernel and a flashed.zip of the drives from the M preview.
I went from 7PM Sunday night to 3:44PM Wednesday Afternoon before charging my phone. I also have very light usage like you. That included 30+hrs of music listening, 2hrs SOT, a few camera shots and all my Google, work email, and Skype accts on ans syncing,

Seems to me that android M will work out for you.........I run M preview 3 currently and made it last weekend from unplugging Friday around 12 noon and plugged in Monday (labor day) forgot my charger at work over the weekend, but plugged in Monday around 11:30am and still had to about 25% remaining, had to use an old charger (not turbo charger) but I was afraid it would die overnight while I was sleeping and the alarm would not go off for work Tuesday. I don't remember what all my stats were, but very light usage since like I said, my turbo charger was at work

which rom or kernel you use will not have any influence on your battery life. battery life is determined by your personal use, your personal set up, which apps you decide to install, and very much your phone/data signal quality. everything else has very littke affect on battery. that said, i personally see about 5.5-7h screen on time. and that pretty decent. but 6 days battery, while using your device, youll never see. only if you dont use your device for long periods of time and if you have your signal turned off.

the device doesnt have stupid low battery, your previous experience, and expectations are stupid high.
tbh, short of turning off data when the screen is off, and having extremely light use (like almost none), i couldnt even speculate what phones could go that distance consistently, short of leaving the phone sit there like a paper weight and never using it.
not trying to be smart, just being realistic, given my experience with about a dozen flagship smart phones over the years.
the guy who commented about the zero lemon battery might have been being funny, but seriously, for the longevity you expect, you should be looking at phones that have zl support.
i have a g3 with a zl battery. with average use you can get 5 days or more, and easily increasing with lighter use.
i tested the n6 before for life with less than 1% use vs time, and it was in the range of 6 days. but that was running a premium rom and kernel and strong service always.
where the n6 excels imo is for the normal user. i have shown proof of 8 to 11 hours screen time during a normal days use consistently.
most people are happy to make it through the day, and charge nightly while you sleep. when you state an expectation of 5-6 days, the comments are undoubtedly not going to be up to your expectations.

I respectfully disagree. I tried several ROMs on my current HTC One. On average, the late 4.x series lasted twice as long as the 5.x series with the same apps, usage and locations. I realize you can attribute whatever battery life fail was added to the OS as "personal set up" or "app". But it is what it is.

My expectations? I've been charging my phone once a week for several months. I went through several configurations to get it that way.
Obviously my use case for the phone is different from yours. I typically use under 300 minutes talk, under 300 texts, and under 500 MB data monthly. But I depend on email push throughout the day, need text and voice when there's an issue, and need reliable data and a good screen for remoting to my servers if there's a problem.
I don't give people grief about how they use their phones. Evidently it's a fun and popular thing to do here. Good luck with that.

honestly, i have no ideas about an htc, considering that my last htc was the g1, which i got in oct of 2008, lol. but whatever rom that you use on a nexus, does not have anything in it for battery life, besides whats in it from stock android. now some kernels do add in things that can help YOU save battery, by how you use or setup your device, but they just wont save you battery on their own. well, they will, buy not enough to notice. unfortunately @SoulSherpa, many people have tried to prove me wrong over the many years ive been with android, but none have. just because people claim better battery with one rom over another, doesnt actually make it real. people believe many things, much of it is not true.

its not different from mine, its different from 99.9999% of all other users.
i typically use under 50min a MONTH, under 200 texts a MONTH, and data, well im grandfathered so thats nothing to discuss.
how others use their phone is representative to how the manufacturers design them, for the average user who charges daily.
you appear to perceive my previous comments as sarcastic and statistical, the further could be from my intention.
i have a rather extensive android knowledge from helping other users for about 5 years. your expectations of any device are highly irregular.
we are merely attempting to make you aware of that, however unsuccessful at the moment...

The reason people treat your question like its weird is pretty simple:
While with minimal and careful usage phones can get through multiple days of usage, the battery life your suggesting, on any android phone, is going to require very little screen on time, limiting the hell out of its data connections, ect...
If you are seriously just trying to have an emergency phone that you can make calls on occasionally and fire up a terminal to remote into your server to check status or run a command or two.... Why are you paying for a 6inch screen with ultra HD display, a powerful processor, dual front facing speakers.... All this stuff that only serves to drain battery and add weight if your not using your phone for entertainment.
Your looking to pay extra for specs you don't need on a device with only "adequate" battery life instead of getting a modest phone that won't consume as much, with an external battery case that would probably let it run a couple weeks for you....

my nexus 5, without sim card, in airplane mode, brightness all the way down, can last me around 3 weeks. but, thats with 0 use. 6 days, with a nexus 6, should be possible, even easy enough.

Because larger screens make remoting much, much easier. Especially when it's a GUI. So, a "phablet" sized phone has always been appealing.
Further, I've been waiting for a "good deal" and the price dropped to $350. My m7vzw had its radio neutered (thanks Verizon), so when I switched to Ting (t-mobile) GSM my data speed hit the floor with EDGE only. The Nexus 6 has nice radio band support.

Have you considered a small tablet? (7 inch or so). You could set up a Google voice account and do all your calls/texts over WiFi/cell data. You'd get a far better battery life with far less effort to do so, and itd be even better for remote access.

I have, and you make a good point. But I still want something I can holster since I don't normally carry a man-pack or utilikilt
This Nexus 6 is pushing it for size -- the holster is huge. But the screen real estate is nice.

...and I seem to be on-track to meet or exceed the six day goal with my light usage (email checks and texts throughout the day, occasional remote, occasional surfing, occasional phone call).

My nexus 7 fits in my pocket no problem. And I'm a fairly average sized male.
