Why on Earth would someone even consider buying this "could have been good, but sucked by HTC as always" ?
Just READ before you buy. You will HAVE the 3D support missing on other devices, though maybe for 2 hours only before recharging.
I was attracted, but this a NO-NO-No for sure

i had a 24 hours vacation and i bought my diamond at the beginning of it so i'll have time to test it (tomorrow, back to work).
so, after 24 hours with diamond in my hand and i mean this literally, it was all the time with me, made calls, sync, installed all my progs and played with it ("we" did have 4 hours brake, for sleep and recharging) i can say it shortly:
every single word in the above blog is truth! all i can add is that:
1. not working with igo8 and spb backup is a big thumb down for me. 2
2. charging from the pc with a regular usb cable is slow and rises the temperature of the whole room (just kidding but the diamond gets really warm-hot)
3. charging with athena's charger is "fast and furios" (from 30% to 100% in less than an hour, 600-700mA) and to my surprise less heating!?
4. not using the touchflow makes wonders (but we bought it for the touchflow, didn't we?).
and put my money where my mouth is, i think i'll returned tomorrow without any refunding till the pro is going to be available here. i'll hate the dimensions (back to trinity's bulky case?!) but at least i'll have something to use and not only play.

I don't care what any reviewers say. I don't need others to give me my opinion. I only really need 7 to 8 hours of battery life, and I don't need some of the feaures that waste a lot of power, so I'm definitely getting a Touch Diamond.

honestly, i would be very greatfull now if i could read this yesterday! i am sorry, i didn't. this is one of the greatest things here, in the forum: we learn one from the another (or not...).

so, quoting my self after a few more hours of diamond usage under my belt:
1. wrong! working with the spb backup. btw, fantastic backup with an option to unpack yr backup file. free to choose what you backup or restore.
2.&3. using the original charger and with the athena's usb cable - fast charge.
4.tweaked touchflow -great improvment
conclusion: returning the diamond? over my dead body! i love it!

got a fat check, 2 spare diamonds and one htc pro from htc inc. all i have to do: keep my mouth shut about the flows and yap about what a great breakthrough this gadget is. as you can easily guess i humbly accepted..

Good, you made me doubt buying it when its in stock in the UK, just have to justify it with my GF now, unfortunately she knows the high price for it and wont be impressed.
Off topic, kinda, is it a deffinate that a better battery will be released by HTC for the diamond?

I really have concerns about the battery, too. I guess that I probably will not use it as much on a regular basis that I would drain the battery before being able to charge it in the evening. But I guess that is the case for a lot of people and you would just want to be sure that on a day when you actually need it that it lasts...
Therefore I will go with the PRO (and because of the microSDHC slot)...

after reading a few posts here i got scared by the battery life as described here. what i found out:
1. there is a sudden fall from 100% to 80%. it's fast. after this everything went normal and i did mange to see the end of the day without a recharge. no 3g, and only 5 minutes of wifi.
2. i spend enough time in my car or in my office to keep the beast feed. how much time do we real spend far from an outlet/car??? not too much so no worry. of course i'll buy the extended battery!
3. charging from the pc is a pain in the but. so i tried the "special" fast charge usb cable i stole from my htc athena. wow! fast and COOL charge. if you don't have one you can made one as described in my "how to" at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387531, post no 6.
4. the memory tweak is good and efficient. the "turn face down" yr phone to silent the ring is working fine but after the first reset is gone (it cost me two voluntary hard resets to find out that there is nobody else to blame). the registry key it keeps the value "0" but the damn thing refuse to do its job.
5. the reception is fine.
6. sound quality is more than ok or fine...is very good.
7. a2dp is the best i ever have. using core player and my old stereo bt headphones was an amazing and more than satisfying experience.
8. used also core player to watch an action movie and i was again impressed. not a glitch!!
9. it fits in my shirt pocket even with my cigarette pack and i am amused by the expression on my friends faces when i slide it out.
9. the shiny, black gadget is a chick magnet and something to brag about.
in 3 words: i love it!

Maybe a stupid question but what are we (the average htc user) expecting from a phone like the Diamond?
Does it need to have enough battery power to run tomtom navigation for 24 hours (hint: carkits) or do we need to be able to just make calls (not the ones with your girlfriend that take about 4 hours talking about the color of her toe nails she should wair tomorrow) getting your email and other things the average user does? This allso brings me to the memory point. How on earth did we manage with the old nokia 6 and 7 series phones? They just had enough memory to have a bloody ringtone? I sure think it's a shame we dont have a sd slot or the option to expand the memory but i'm allso pretty sure i wont fill up that 4Gb unless i'm going to start collecting crap stuff on it.
I'm allso aware there ARE users who want to run stuff that keep your mobile screen running most of the time and have a girlfriend who really needs to know what color she should use and must have the entire collection of mp3's they downloaded the past 5 years with them 24/7... for those users they will hopefully invent a phone with a car battery and static harddisks
But seriously, think about the power drain the larger screens consume when they are lit a lot of the time. I'm afraid the batteries will be a limiting factor for allmost all phones i guess?

And for using the Diamond just as a phone and PDA the battery is apparently completely sufficient to carry you through the day.
But the phone comes with GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G... And the thing is, when you need those features the most you probably cannot just charge the device in between (e.g. you travel/business trip etc.).
So for me this does not meet MY expectations even if this phone would fail them only once a week or once a month... I need to be able to use the device with some web browsing, phone calls, some GPS (GPS is great not only when you are in a car), using PDA software and listening to some music without the need to recharge it.
Why? Because I do not want to make this compromise...
And if you compare these features with older phones and raise the point that we did not need that or were fine with this 5 years ago, I simply have to reply that your expectations simply change with the options you have. I want to do it because I can do it...
And since an extended battery probably almost adds up to a "bulkiness" comparable to the PRO version, I will go with the PRO right away

i guess i am lucky with my diamond AND my athena. if i want to dl/read my e-mail i am using athena, in my car, calls and gps also athena (i wired the headphones output to my car stereo aux in). diamond is when i walk or i am really on the field. each ppc has his time and use..hehehe..still i very rarely download email or surf when i am "out". besides i always have my trusted laptop with me, a very nice source for recharging the smaller brothers or replace them with his powerful wifi. i think i don't miss a thing in the "mobility" field.

I am a doctor and I do not take my laptop to work on a regular basis and I like using a PPC to quickly check some offline database for drugs etc.
Having the chance to check mails without having to go to my office is not the worst thing if you work all over the hospital. That's the same for checking RSS feeds or some easy stuff on the internet. I think this could be nice... and I just cannot take more than one device with me while working.
And that is more or less the same for GPS. If you are "on the go" you really want it to last a little bit...
As said before, even if this is not on a regular basis, you just do not want to run out of energy when you need it.
And honestly because of that I really appreciate that HTC is launching the PRO to address the different needs of customers. If I would work at one office place the whole day, I'd get a second charger and could just charge the Diamond in the middle of the day just within the reach of my hands.
But fortunately I do not have a job like this

Ok, After a week with the DIamond, heres what i think.
The BAD:
1- Battery sux big time, barely a day ( WIFI,3G,Bluetooth=OFF).
2- Performance of the TF3D is not that great, especially opening sms's & emails.
3-A Lot of compatibility issues with your best Appz, some of them wont work.
4-Chrging with usb IS S-L-O-W & the phone does get hot.
The Good:
1- I love the TF3D, it eventually grows on you,just needs some tweaking to speed things up & maybe customize it a little.
2- I love the G-sensor, with time software developers can make wonders using it, example : Flip the phone now to silent.
3- About freaking time to have a vga screen, no way im turning back to QVGA.
4-Hardware is awesome, 528Mhz, 192/256 RAM/ROM and with modified rom, i see a great potential for this phone.
5- Ohh browsing on this phone is great, using the smart wheel, u can enlarge & its great, like an iphone.

If i was asked to weight it all in, i would still keep it & just wait for some roms.
If you didnt buy it yet, wait for the Touch pro, has a keyboard, 1300Mah battery & fullkeyboard.
I got the Tyt-II & actually never used the keyboard but i like the saying that goes " I'd rather have it & not need it then Need it & not have it".
Its a phone that has great potential but needs some time.

I am wondering if all the reviews that are out right now have the final rom (/the rom update that caused the delay in shippment of the first batch of Touch Diamonds)...
If not, we might see some differences and hopefully improvements on some of the issues that people report.

For 1 week playing with my Diamond, so far never hang and everything looking good!

I have thought about this too, I'm hopefull, that this is indeed the situation!

Regarding battery, I will get a second battery (normal, not extended) and the cradle that charges the device plus a spare battery. If I run out during the day, I will just swap batteries. Most days I won't need it, but it will be there if I do.

Mate, seriously.. wtf?
I read that review... That guy likes the phone! It has several shortcomings, but it's obvious. As several people said it already, with that thin a phone, especially a WM, with SO MANY features, you're bound to have some compromises.. And this phone still rocks!
Secondly.. Check the coolsmartphone website.. The guy had it for a week (same as your reviewer), but he made the review into a video-blog! SEVERAL HOURS of pwnage video with the diamond! Obviously, it's not perfect.. but you get an almost full overview of the features..
Seriously, some people's expectations are waaaay high =/

Droid 3 [XT860] Arrived

Well it arrived yesterday, and I'm super-happy to say that so far (knock on wood) it appears to be essentially flawless; no screwy keys, no bad backlight, no boot-looping or overheating or any of the other issues that seem to plague some of the batches of phones. I also got the Moto 1930mAh battery, so battery life shouldn't be a big issue.
I was worried about the screen quality (a common D3 gripe), but I gotta say, after being accustomed to an older, smaller, scratched-up, lower-res, innaccurate, resistive touch screen on my HTC Tilt 2 for the last two years, I'm totally happy with the D3's screen; aside from it being slightly dimmer than some of the super-bright/saturated Super-AMOLEDs, it looks fine. I looked pretty closely and watched the text scroll in the Home interface and on web pages, and I never saw this "blurriness" that apparently drives all the super-picky screen elitists to hate PenTile. It looks great to me, probably due to the high res.
When it comes to navigating Android, I pretty much just stare at it and drool like a catatonic chimp, occasionally poking at buttons/icons, and dragging stuff here and there. Years of Windows Mobile haven't left me very Android-inclined I guess, but it looks intuitive and I've heard that it may be a slightly better OS than WinMo, so I'll figure it out.
And, as expected, the keyboard blew away any expectations I had. It's awesome.
So far I love the thing.
I'm a little scared to root; can I brick my phone while trying to root it?

Nice! I see: root! It can't be easier. Just double click!

I'd wait a bit before root. In general I say wait for an SBF of a sort. Soon we should see an update to address the bluish camera, power leaking car dock and few other minor annoyances. Hopefully recovery files will leak soon.

Well it's been 2 days now. I've figured out how to drag icons around and add/remove them from my Home screen, updated some stuff, and downloaded/played GRave Defense HD (fun game btw).
I left it to charge all night, and plucked it from the chrager at exactly 7am yesterday when I left for work. I've used it moderately so far; watched a few YouTube vids, played some GRave Defense, texted a fair amount, checked Gmail, explored the menus a lot and fiddled around with it quite a bit. So far the battery is down to about 48% in a period of 30 hours (7am one day to 1pm the next day) without being turned off at all. I'm betting it will hit two days before needing a recharge, althoug with heavier usage it mayonly last 30-36 hours per charge. Still, not too bad at all for such a monster smartphone. I'm actually pretty impressed. I do have the 1930mAh Moto battery though. Which, I must add, doesn't even add any noticeable size increase to the phone.
Gotta say I LOVE this phone so far; I definitely picked the right phone for me; I can't find a single thing wrong with it, really. I don't know what people are *****ing about as far as the interface being slow or the screen being in any way blurry; you practically have to look at the thing under a friggin microscope to even see the slight cross-hatched PenTile dithering. I think people are just looking for excuses to complain. Of course, I don't have that much for a basis of comparison; I'm not really spoiled with all the latest phone technology, having only a Tilt2 with its old 528MHz single-core processor and buggy-ass, laggy TouchFLO-3D-on-top-of-Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system for comparison.

the blurry thing is hard to see at first.. but after a while you will notice it.. it doesnt bug me so much but its there lol.. overall i love the phone too.. great purchase.. i just got into the rooting and exploring android further scene.. rooting is easy .. its literally 2 clicks away.. cant harm anything.. but from there.. becareful what u do .. u dont want to delete the wrong thing .. then ur sol till an SBF comes out..

I agree it is a good little phone and once you get used to it you get to liking it. I am finding that it is a nice phone to be able to dink around with. My only thing is I haven't found a launcher I just love. Blur seems slow, as does ADB, and Go Launcher was buggy. But other then that it seems like a good little phone.

Oooh, I just figured out that I can forcibly turn up the brightness in the Display settings and the display looks brilliant in a half-lit room. I don't want it eating up battery though so I'll keep it down around 60% or so.
I loaded DICE player and it literally crashes and reboots my phone EVERY TIME I load any kind of video file. Craptacular. I'll stick with MoboPlayer.

I rooted my unlocked XT860 quite easily using PSouza's Tool (version 1.06). It worked very well! I was afraid as well but didn't see anyone in the forum that said they bricked when they tried it.
I semi-bricked my phone by trying to flash one of the ROMs out there (Steel Droid), so I warn you - don't do any ROMs until they are released as international-friendly! (or specifically built for our XT860's).
To unbrick, I flashed the Chinese ME865 SBF. It's nice to have my phone back but it's on Android version 2.3.5, which is currently not root-able.
So there *is* a way out in case of catastrophe, but it's not as nice as having a stock Bell SBF.

I also rooted and added Hashcodes recovery to my XT860, but like everyone else, I'm impatient for something to flash. It's like our phones are all dressed up, but have nowhere to go
Its slightly depressing as well, surfing all the other sites, the popular ones and some not so popular...there's just no dev action on this phone. No forums even where we can exchange information. Well, except in here, hidden in the D3 forums.
I can't complain about the phone at all, to be honest, as I won it in one of MobileSyrups giveaways.

When I plugged it in, it still had 10% as well, but it was going down pretty quick, likely would not have lasted another hour or two. Not bad at all though; 37 hours without a recharge while surfing, texting, and downloading/installing hordes of new apps is certainly a pretty good time-frame for a smart phone these days.
Just downloaded/installed Pandora Radio, it is the dog's bollocks (that's British for "Awesome").

Since the times of milestone one, those big numbers are surfacing.
Usually they came from people that doesen't use the always on data or is used to keep the phone in 2g.
With my xt883 and the extended battery i'm happy if i reach the end of the day...

Well OK, to be fair, I work in a secured area and can't bring my phone in, and must leave it in a little locker outside the door. This happens about 5-6hrs a day, so you could subtract up to 10 or 12 hours of actual usage time out of that 37 hours, but I made sure that at no point was the phone ever turned off or put in sleep mode or airplane mode; it was always on and had signal.

Wow impressive. I wish my battery life was that long. But unfortunately CDMA isn't as friendly. But I can make it through the day with over 50% left if I do it right.

I'm lucky if I get 8 hours, regardless of use

My stock XT862 (debloated though) does about 12 hours on heavy usage. Does 16h on normal usage

I think my only regret so far was getting the Moto 1930mAh battery; sinc then I've heard amazing things about the Mugen power 3600mAh one. Oh well, the Moto battery definitely pulls it weight.

Yes however the xt862 has had a software update fixing the cell standby/idle bug. The xt860 has had no update.

samsung guy buys htc one and rooting questions

OK I can find the answers here most likely but I just wanted to ask questions.
I have had s2 and s3. both rooted. both custom kernels. etc. I noticed vast improvements. the one frankly makes me nervous. should I even root it?
its on telus network in Canada. seems the ones are all the same no? unlike Samsung galaxy series. is development advanced enough to go ahead? I've only had the phone now for less than a week. I really do like it. miss the physical home button. don't care about aluminum design etc. nervous about sealed battery. but the battery life is awesome so far. even on the first charge I got all day and 6 hours of screen. this was with playing with settings. trying speakers. etc. but of course I'm always looking for more.
I'd say rooting my s3 meant I went from all day and 5 hours screen to all day and 6 plus hours screen. definitely worth it. should I expect the same here? I really want a secondary way to wake the device. pushing a touch button or swipe would be nice. will these not work in a dark room? any detrimental reasons why I wouldn't want this?
I mostly want battery life. convince me that I have the right phone. I can still return it I think. but got a good deal on the phone. basically paid 500 for it new. on a plan. 150 off price. and 500 device balance should I decide to pay it out. s4 is still 150 on contract. plus the 500 device balance. I want to like the one I really do. but missing Samsung sometimes. this is not an s4 vs one thread. just help me make the most of this device.

Don't wanna sound mean, but save yourself the trouble and switch the One for the S4. I've enough experience to know that when you're questioning a phone, asking whether it's the right one for you or not, usually means the mind's set on something else and you'll never be happy with it. If you miss Samsung and you like the ability to switch batteries, why not go with the S4? It's not a bad device, and you said yourself that you don't care about the aluminium design of the One.
If battery life is what you're after, I'd be happy to let you know there are a lot of beefy batteries available for the S4. Check Amazon for instance.

battery will improve over time when i first got mine i got around
10-12 hrs with around 3-4 hrs screen time
the next week i got 15-20 hrs with 4-5 hrs screen time
and now after around 2 months around 30 hrs with 5-7 hrs screen time

Fair enough. I don't know any battery saving tweaks as I don't pay much mind to that. I just use my device like I want to use it, then charge whenever I see fit. I have a charger at home, next to my bed (which is also conveniently close to my desk) so I'm happy if it lasts 8 hours of medium usage (whenever I'm working)
I just don't wanna see you miserable, mate. I've seen far too many people making the wrong choice of phone (myself included, though not with the One) and ending up hating anything and everything (not literally ).

@OP, i think you only want some attention and some words to help you sleep at night... you're not a noob in rooting world, you already know about the difference between HTC and Samsung in battery area, and now you want others to convince you? nobody can...

Try JuiceDefender. It does a good job of managing radios and turning things off and on based on location in addition to some other solid battery saving techniques.
Also, I hear your pain. I love the design and the speakers. I even like Sense for the first time ever. I think I miss the physical home button of my S2 and 3 though. Reaching for the power button is annoying and compounded by the fact that the screen stays off when texts are received.

really? i average 30+ hrs with 5-7 hrs screen time which is on par with the s4 i had but the lag was to much. how does a phone with the same processor as the one but overclocked to 1.9 ghz lag when the one at 1.7 ghz doesnt? that is unacceptable for a flagship device

I'm not a noob to rooting. I've done it with almost every phone I've had. I just happen to not have much experience with HTC. I had a desire HD. rooted. but got rid of it shortly after.
like I said if I was so desperate for the s4 I would get it. or i would go out and buy one outright. i saved 150 buying the one, its got rave reviews, and so far save for a few thinga i love it. I said I don't care about aluminum, but truth be told this phone seems much more robust than s4. materials aside. and that's important. if it was a robust plastic phone I would not care.

yes I unplugged it @ 100% went to bed woke up took screen shoot it is the same every time if i sleep more than 9hrs sometimes it will be @ 97%...powersave on this phone is awesome i just disable it for my screen and set it 50% brightness everything is on wifi bluetooth etc ,the phone goes into a deep sleep when in standby and with greenify hibernating everything(google maps etc) this is real man

[Q] Finally jumping to the Nexus 6.

Verizon contract is up in a couple weeks so I'm jumping to T-Mobile (costs less) and getting the Nexus 6. I just have a few questions.
Are there any weird quirks with the phone? Anything I won't find out by playing with the phone in store for 10 minutes? Is the phone as powerful as the specs say it is?
I saw some of the older battery life charts in the other thread and they aren't terrible. Is battery life still decent? I'm looking for 4-5+ hours of screen-on time ideally.
Does the "quick charger" that comes with it work well?
Tl;dr Do you recommend the phone?

It's a loaded post, which is why a lot of views, but nary a reply.
However ....
Your title to me is better than jumping on a N6, which could be disastrous to the phone.
If you have looked over the threads, you'll get varying opinions, and mostly IMO it depends on two things:
What they had/came from
What they expect out of the N6.
I will only speak for myself; I came from a VZ GNex I hung onto for 3 years - anything I may have gone to would be a worthy HW upgrade, however I want to tweak my phone when I'm ready to, and that means a Nexus.
I love the phone, it was a bit of a letdown, as I was already running 5.0 on my GNex, so the experience was to a larger, faster smoother phone than what I had. Other than that, I'm loving every minute of having it, plain and simple.
I have one other person who transitioned to one, and he loves it as well.
I'm not going to tell you to get it, you have to go play with it and decide for yourself.
To your specific questions:
quirks - no more so than any other phone, I haven't found any yet myself - most who post I think have to do with not knowing what they set in Lollipop, I've already had it for a bit, so I'm used to it.
Yup, its fast and powerful, whether or not you decide to go unencrypted is up to you, which goes to what you had and what you expect - are you going to unlock root, mod? You can enjoy this phone for quite a bit of time before maybe even needing a reason to go mod it.
Personally, I haven't yet, nor have a lot of members here (check the what rom are you running on VZ thread) because again, I haven't (other than wanting to change my softkeys) had a good reason (to me) to invest the time to do it.
I'm sure it will happen, but not right now. right now I'm just enjoying the hell out of having it.
Batt time is always subjective, whether or not we care to admit it. No two devices are going to run the same, have the same app load outs, some have different memory it appears, and some may actually (gasp) have a bad batt on arrival.
Mine has ran terrific (remember again - what I had and what I expect), and the QC runs great to recharge if need be. I can say that I love not worrying about the batt right now on it daily, but that's for me and my usage.

Battery is fine and its quick. The fast charger works well. I'm not really a fan of them but its what it comes with. I came from a m8 which was a nice device but I like this one better.

My wife and I jumped from Sprint to T-Mobile, handing off our Evo 4G's when the Nexus 6 was released, and wouldn't look back. The Nexus 6 has been nothing short of awesome... the camera, speed, screen, everything - is awesome. We keep ours in thick iBlason "Armorbox" cases, and still enjoy our QI charging (I'm unsure how QI isn't a requirement in modern phones these days!). A lot of friends complained about the size, but those that got it anyway, ended up "getting over it" and now won't go back to the smaller screens, heh! It still fits nicely in my (male) jean pockets -- with the large case -- but you'd be hard-pressed to get it safely in female pockets (sorry ladies... you're not allowed to put stuff in the pockets!).
Quirks: one big thing jumped out at me, but isn't a big deal for most. The phone does have built-in RGB LEDs that sit underneath the top speaker, yet, they chose to block access to this functionality. I guess they reused the underlying board but didn't want the LEDs, but nonetheless, they are invaluable to me: I enjoy knowing if I have something waiting for me *without* having to look at the screen - whether while in bed, sitting on the desk, riding the bike, etc.! The plus, you can get at these LEDs if you're rooted. So... if that's possibly desirable to you, I'd recommend unlocking the phone as soon as you get it, so you can avoid the data wipe down the road. The Lightflow app can handle them quite well (though I believe it requires the "Pro" version, for a couple bucks). ...and as of now, the LEDs are "on or off" - no flashing... but hey, I'll take what I can get!
Oh, and not really related to the phone itself, but a Google-Nexus 6 quirk -- quite annoying at the time, for me -- Google's "My Tracks" app was broken for awhile (unable to acquire the GPS signal). There are a gazillion alternatives out there, but I'd been a long-time daily user of the app, and Google broke it!...for months. It was disappointing that they would break core app functionality on their *current* flagship device, for their own app, and choose to ignore it for such a long time. I think the 5.1 update fixed whatever problem they had, but that was a pet peeve.. On the plus side, I've enjoyed the feature-rich alternatives that I was forced to explore, ha!
We haven't messed with de-crypting ourselves, as the phones are super-duper-fast as-is, but we love them. These are our introduction to the Nexus world, and we love the fact that they no-bars-hold permit unlocking, and that the updates are, of course, front line.
Tl;dr I highly recommend the phone! Phone size is the only recurring complaint among friends.

I am currently using MeanPop 2.11 on my Nexus 6 and it has a blinking LED light for notifications, a blinking red light for while your phone is charging and a green light for when the device is fully charged. I had the phone a couple of hours tops before I rooted it, so I can't really provide an opinion on the device out of the box. My brother is using a non-rooted Nexus 6 and he loves it as well. We both came from the Note Edge, but enjoy the Nexus 6 more than any device we have used up to this point. Out of the box, the device is encrypted (which some people have stated that their performance suffered compared to being unencrypted). You can easily unlock the phone and decrypt it. There is a solid guide for this in the development section. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or ask them here and I'll assist where I can.

That solves the LED issue. I will probably decrypt the device since I don't know why I would need it encrypted. Thank you. I will definitely message you with any questions, but I won't have the phone until closer to the end of April (24th or so), so it will be a bit yet. I'm just glad the phone is shaping up to be as great as I am expecting it to be.
Out of curiosity, what are the benefits of leaving the phone encrypted?

T-Mobile has been equal-to-or-better than Sprint in Tucson, AZ... their customer service is dreadful (store reps are absolutely useless), but if you're persistent, you usually come out alright - which I'm happy to do with the difference in cost (+$10 to join my sister's plan versus $30+ for Sprint's split... among the other (contract, discount, etc.) considerations! Data is hit-or-miss on the outskirts of the city, but so is Sprint (and ATT)...Verizon seems to have solid service out there, though...(then again, you pay for it!)...
Data speeds are almost always slower when compared to Verizon (a friend with Verizon did some speed tests with me...we're both usually LTE, but he'd consistently get 3-4x faster speeds...this probably varies greatly by locale and their networks), but it's sufficient for me. If you're one to watch Netflix or download a ton, it'll probably be quite the downgrade.. but me - I'm on wireless for any big data usage, so network-wise, I'm just mapping, a little music streaming, geo tracking and such.
Encryption: For the extra paranoid or those with ultra-sensitive information on their phones, perhaps?
I suspect it would make things a little more difficult for law enforcement, too... depending on backdoors and such? Actually, yeah, that looks to be the case!
After seeing the speed comparisons, I'd definitely switch over now, even though the phone is fast-as-can-be as it is, ha. One of these days maybe... but for now, it's a few more minutes in a already-crazy day.

A wakelock is triggered with the flashing LED even in the custom Rom (burns 1-2% per hour that the LED is flashing). It's definitely worth having though. The ROM is solid and I haven't had a single issue with it yet.

After reading the benchmarking for encryption vs decryption, I'm definitely decrypting the phone when I get it. I'm not overly worried about the LEDs (does seem weird though that it's not like all of the other android phones I've had, where they just work, regardless of ROM). I'm in the middle of the East Coast where (according to coverage maps) 4G is more available, so I'll definitely run some speed tests and see how T-mobile's data speeds stack up on this side of the country. I really just need a fast browser with good, stable internet speeds. I won't complain if it's faster than 3G.

Bad performance and other good/bad things (P10 Plus)

I have been using P10 Plus (6/128 GB) for a day, and I am trying really hard to like it. I haven't found all the good/bad points yet but the list of bad things is already kind of outweighing the list of good things. Were my expectations really just too high?
These are really just my opinions, and you are free to disagree. Even I might change my mind if there are really good reasons to!
I might as well add that paid about $860 (in Norway) for my P10 Plus while Galaxy S8+ costs "slightly more" (about $1,000). I just feel like I got so little in return for the price I paid.
I have to decide by tomorrow anyway whether to keep this device or return it, and I am currently leaning towards returning it.

Good things:
Responsive fingerprint reader on the front side, unlocks screen pretty much instantly.
Has a nice shape (like an iPhone 7). No annoying sharp edges except at the bottom holes for connectors, where I support the device with my pinky finger.
Lots of camera settings.
My device luckily has UFS 2.1.
Pretty good WiFi speed (measured more than 200 Mbps during internet speed test).
The DAC's quality is okay (not very good). A little bit of noise when using my sensitive in-ear headphones, but it's very bearable. This is only a "good" point because it's an upgrade from my old phone.
Bad things:
I already found some sluggish menus on day one.
Somewhat bad performance when taking photos and shooting videos, even playing back videos I captured is somewhat choppy.
The device gets pretty hot during "normal" (in my opinion light) use, and really hot while charging and during "heavy" (in my opinion normal) use.
Seems like the battery drains more quickly than I expected as well (larger battery does not make it much or any better than P10) so that I still need to bring an extra battery with me if I intend to use mobile data and GPS.
The swiping on the fingerprint reader is a bit of a hit and miss because it might register a tap which means "back" (or exit).
Photos taken and saved as JPEG look bad. RAW images look quite a bit better but it takes seconds to save each image.
My GFXBench result is pretty bad compared to other devices.
Nitpicking:
The edge of the screen protector is so annoying I want to take it off. Note: If you do it, you might want to apply oleophobic coating.
I wish the fingerprint sensor indentation was a bit less deep, because it makes the swiping motion feel less comfortable. The screen protector is probably most of the reason though.
I was never able to transfer app data (only apps themselves) from my old device using any method suggested by Huawei. The thing that did work was a backup/restore using adb.
USB 2 is pretty slow after getting used to USB 3.
The device sometimes thinks that I am using a knuckle gesture when I am using the tip of my finger.

sometimes very laggy also. And some apps not compatible with the camera.

Turns out that I am stuck with this device due to the shop's no-return policy on phones. I might as well begin training my mind to like the device. Won't feel guilty about rooting and trying custom ROMs now either.

Pretty much this phone is unusable due these 2 things, battery life is poor as AF, and from my perspective, Huawei messed up EMUI 5.1 really hard.
Probably an update would fix it, but we don't have ETA yet.
I will return back the P10 Plus because I think is not worth it, and I will buy a Mate 9 Pro that is virtually the same device, but battery life is so much better.

@nougn Which firmware are you on? In terms of battery life the phone may not be the best, but from my experience its also not bad either. 6 hours DOT should be possible unless you are a heavy gamer. However what you said about the device getting hot that does sound like it may have faulty hardware, I'd be careful with that. You should grab an app monitoring CPU and battery temperatures. If you come to the conclusion that the device is getting warmer than it should I'd contact Huawei on the matter. What I find most bizarre is that you say the performance is laggy at times, I never experienced even just the slightest lag no matter what I do, it is smooth as silk in every situation. Maybe another indication for faulty hardware.......? On a side note: the price you paid seems really high, a lot of commercial seller on ebay offer it for a lot less than that... but anyhow if you really wanted to get rid of the device you could always sell it on ebay or something, no? So you're never actually "stuck" with a device

This device always works in high temperatures, and is really easy for it to get hot. Use the camera more than 3 minutes and it will start to feel uncomfortable on hand.
I had the same experience, poor battery life and device most of the time hot. I checked the temperatures and is around 30°C on stand by, and after some minutes of WhatsApp and news, it was reaching 40°C, which is not normal at all, when my previous phone was around 18°C on stand by and 25°C in normal usage.
I'm used to stick with cold devices and is one of the first things I noticed when I used this device, and is a pretty common problem among many users. Most of the people would say that is only "warm", but I had the Mate 9 as well, with the same specs, and trust me, it was an ice cube the whole time.

One has to keep in mind though that temperatures like that are impossible to reach in summer (unless its a very cold summer), the device can never be cooler than the air surrounding it

Well, I'm talking about my room, which has air conditioning, and I just bought the P10 Plus and today I returned it back.
Problem solved, I got my money back, and I'm trying to see which phone to get, but pretty much I don' t like what I see in the market now.

The standby drain is crazy and as you said the phone gets really hot when using the camera more than a few minutes.
Also one more problem is when the phone reach certain temperature the wide aperture effect in the gallery will stop working..
It's a pity since I like this phone in many ways and the camera is great.
But if Huawei don't fix it (very) soon i may be "forced" to sell it and get another one..
Almost regret that I sold my old Mate 8..

Today I returned my P10 Plus, for me there's no excuse to pay so much for a phone that has basic problems.
I will see if I get a Mate 9 Pro or any other phone, but I'm kind of picky when getting a new device.

Sorry for the late response. I have been traveling for the past few days.
I decided to bring this phone with me on vacation to Japan where it is currently very humid and it feels like 33+ degrees C (91+ degrees F) in the sun. Trying to use mobile data, GPS and Google Maps is not exactly pleasant for my hand. The worst part is trying to take some photos because the device's temperature gets uncomfortably high for my hand. Will try to measure the temperatures next time I go out!
I am also really glad that I brought an extra battery, although the output of the extra battery (per port) is just enough (2.4A) to keep the device's battery percentage stable while using mobile data and GPS (goes up when idle).
I also guessed hardware defect, but it now seems like I am not the only one with problems. I really hope that Huawei can fix some things in the software, including the heat issue.

You should post your experiences in the battery thread, so it could have more visibility and people can start to acknowledge this, would be really nice from you to do it.

The P10 plus has a IPS LCD screen
The Mate 9 pro has a AMO-LED screen
maybe that adds to the difference in SOT for the two Huawei devices...

I'm sorry, but there is no way that the screen technology is the decisive factor between 3 and 6 hours SOT.

That's how you choose to read my post - but not what I wrote, IMHO
My point is to raise awareness about the different screen technologies, because I've seen more than one comparison where the two devices are said to use the same screen (probably because of same size and res.), but that is plain WRONG!

I understand your point, but still having AMOLED display means nothing in 2017. You can see the HTC U11 with LCD and has pretty goddamn battery life. You can have the normal Mate 9 with IPS and also has a really nice battery life. Right now screen technologies are really mature and it doesn't influence much (or at all) what kind is on a phone.

Came from S8, I used it for a couple of months and now Im using P10 Plus.
Im more than happy now with P10+.

I have had my P10 Plus for about 2 months now and I can tell you I get around 5 hours of SOT with 1-2 of gaming. The battery stays at 100% for about 15 minutes regardless what I do and then begins to drop. Somehow form 70% downwards it starts to really slow its discharge rate. You might worry about this but the honest truth is that I can make it at the end of each day (around midnight) with around 15-20% battery left. For me this is more than enough as I recharge my phone every night.
I would suggest you stop worrying about your phone dying on you and just start using it. Also use Phone Manager once a day and you'll be good to go.
