I broke the screen on my current phone and while it's being fixed I decided to give the ol' I9000 a spin. It was on Android 4.2.2, so I flashed the latest Cyanogenmod 11 snapshop and installed some apps. Both before and after the flashing I had some seemingly random performance problems. There were times when it performed reasonably well, scrolling and opening apps, while mere moments later it took minutes to open the default keyboard and write a few words. Is it something I can diagnose further or fix? Could it be some faulty component (like the built-in storage from example)?
I've attached the About information ...

Read through the "sluggish" thread and did not see my issue mentioned and thatthread seems to have become sidetracked with benchmarks and game responsiveness issues.
I am running stock nook rom, rooted and with sideloading enabled. I also use GOlauncher as opposed to the nook launcher.
What i have noticed is that after 2 to 3 weeks of use the tablet slowly starts to get slow and unresponsive. Dolphin takes time to open, and pages scroll very very slowly. Sometimes they will not scroll at all, even though theyare fully loaded and rendered. Scrolling is also noticeably slow and unresponsive in the engadget app. It is not smooth, but jerky, ifit scrolls at all. Rebooting does not have any effect.
The first time this happened i did bring the free space down to about 300meg. After reading other posts here i decided that was the issue, backed up and started allthe way over from scratch! The issue went away. I re-installed everything, got it running clean and smooth and set up just how i like it. I then took a cwm backup and put it insafe place. Fast forward 3 more weeks and i was back to slow scrolling and unresponsiveness again. At no time in that 3 weeks did i drop below 8 gig free, so i know that is not the issue.
Here is where it gets a little strange. Today, i did a full backup with titanium, then a restore from my fully config and SMOOTH cwm backup. I then did a restore all appps and system data from the titanium i made earlier in the day. I am back to smooth and responsive. This tells me there is something that is getting corrupted or not released, even with a reboot. Anyone have any ideas on what to try next time other than a restore from cwm and a reload from titanium?
I had the same issues with stock 2.1. Besides the slow game loading and random stutter for games, the device would slowly start to accumulate to slow for everything. I would like to test with 10.1 as my native stock OS, rather than 2.1.
I had a similar experience. Even after disabling nook sync apps and making tweaks, stock would eventually slow down. Something about stock 2.1 just doesn't manage its memory/cache properly.
This isn't the solution you may want, but I'd recommend trying emmc Cm10.1. Its plain, but its virtually bug free and hasn't crashed on me yet.

I've been rooting and bootloader unlocking Android for about 3 years now and this has to be the easiest tablet to put CM 10.1 on with the latest tools. It's actually easier than my Nexus 7 when it first came out. My hair actually turned grey when I was unlocking my Note 2 bootloader. I wish every Android device was just as easy as the Nook HD+. I think part of the confusion is that in the beginning you had one method (running CM off sd card) and you now have the more current method (replacing Rom which is the most common). The development area needs to be cleaned up better because it does look confusing. I've only been a Nook HD+ owner for 24 hours and I have made my custom micro SD card, installed CM 10.1, reverted back to stock with no backup (needed to return for a bright pixel in the middle of the display), repeated process again with new tablet and made proper backups. Sounds like a lot but this is nothing compared to what I've been through.

Seems to be because B&N has trim disabled:

Hi,
On a Nook HD+ 32GB CM10.1 (6/15) on emmc. I am getting random reboots, perhaps once or twice a day. Is this normal ?
Thanks
I ran that build for about 1 week and had 2 or 3 random reboots total. I am currently running killersloth's Carbon ROM for about 24 hours, and so far no reboots. Not a lot of data to go off yet. The devs are doing awesome and I can only think (hope) it will continue since there are so many Nooks flooding the market right now
I've had quite many android devices (all on customROMs), so I've seen many unexpected reboots.
But no reboot is considered normal.
I flashed the same ROM on six different HD+ (all 16GB, from 5 different stores. Three are mine and other three are for my friends).
I've never seen (or heard complains about) an unexpected reboot.
For my own HD+, I tried CARBON B1/B2 and now back to latest CM10.1 and still haven't seen a reboot.
Maybe some app you're running ?
Usually caused by being overburdened, out of memory. Unfortunately most people report this as "random"
I haven't experienced an unexpected reboot on the HD with verygreens cm10.1 or with my carbon build. However I never keep going if the device becomes sluggish, I let it finish whatever task I told it to do that's using up all the available memory.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've actually switched from CM10.1 EMMC (last build I tried was early August) to CarbonRom (B11).
I don't know if my Nook HD+ was over burdened, but I've seen it charging on my desk and it decides to reboot. I started "tracking" the reboots and noticed that they happened fairly often (once a day or more some times). I'd open Chrome and Nook reader just so they would show up in my recent apps menu. Then I'd leave it and check it later, sometimes the recent apps would be empty which means at some point the tablet rebooted.
Regardless, Carbonrom works well for me since I'm not usually doing anything critical with my tablet just email, web browsing, and reading.
Occasionally I'll bust out FreeCell or Trapped as far as games go. The best part is that I'm not getting the reboots.
Not sure what was happening with CM10.1, but I'll probably give it a shot again when 10.2 isn't experimental because I do like the Trebuchet launcher (which I can put on carbon, but Trebuchet crashes when I try to change the number of screens and a few other settings).
My Nook also randomly reboots. Just lying on the table without me touching it, or when I read comics or surf the web. It does seem *completely* random. I am beginning to think it is a hardware issue B&N cannot fix.
I was using EMMC Carbon B11 for a time in my HD+ because it offered the Tablet UI among other features. I also experienced occasional unexpected reboots while using that ROM but their low rate was nothing that made the ROM unusable. A few weeks ago I switched from B11 to a 4.3 EMMC ROM from iamafanof that also offers the Tablet UI and seems in my experience so far to have noticeably fewer unexpected reboots or restarts. For anyone who is experiencing "excessive" reboot rates using another ROM, iamafanof's 4.3 ROM might be worth a try. He also has a 4.3 ROM for the Nook Tablet. His ROMs can be found at his WordPress.com page.
Hi All,
I was experiencing random reboot issue on my Nook HD+ for a long time.
Only thing that helped is rooting my device and installation of CPU with max frequency 1300 MHz. I haven't noticed degradation of performance but reboots went away.
I assume root cause was CPU overheating
Hope this will be useful for someone
Hi,
I have a NOOK HD+ (with CM 10.2 stable), my device reboot very very often, i don't think it is normal and would like if a expert check my last_kmsg.dat and tell me what is going wrong on my device.
I also set my CPU @1300MHz to avoid overheating but it doesn't helped
thanks in advance
btw. I don't use a SDCard

Yes. I was seeing this one a lot on CM10.1.3. Definite kernel bug.
I made some kernel changes to /drivers/mmc and haven't seen it since.
If you want to try it, check out my 'overclock omap4470' thread (use one of the last two kernels; I made the touchscreen I2C fixes and mmc fixes at the same time).
FWIW this morning I had a random reboot with ABE Power Management (first reboot in awhile though). So I'm trying to chase that one down.
Edit:
Also here's an example of omap thermal opp throttling.

(this was before I reduced the voltages)

Thx Jon for replay, i will try that and report how that gone
btw. can i use your kernel with CM10.2 or should i downgrade to CM 10.1.3 first?
Hello,
For the last 6 months or so, I've experienced many lag issues with my device. At the begging, I had a CM11 ROM installed on my phone, so I decided to revert back to the V20B official european firmware because I thought those lags were related to the ROM. But nothing changed, and as of today I still have responsiveness issues.
This lag issue appears from time to time, and makes my device basically unusable. It feels like the whole CPU is hogged by an application, or like I underclocked my device to 53mhz on purpose. During these lags, trying to wake up my device will take up to 5 seconds, and navigating the main screen will be nearly impossible. Also, my phone will get very hot which would imply that my CPU is indeed used by an application. Sometime the issue will disappear by itself after a few minutes, but I usually reboot the device which temporarily fixes the problem.
I have tried to disable LG MLT, and I think it helped but the lag still occasionally occurs.
I don't really use third party applications either.
I think these lags might be related to the Google Chrome browser, but it doesn't make any sense as it is an official app.
Anyway if any of you have an idea on how to fix the issue or how to find the application/service/whatever hogging the CPU I'd be grateful
Thanks !
I did experience such lags in CM11 after a few days of usage. But talking about stock, these freezes sound bit weird. You might want to check your installed apps.Download watchdog lite from play store and let it watch on agressive mode. Also check if your phone is hot when these freezes occur, might be the throttling kicking in.
I also experienced this kind of lags due to bad gapps I had installed back in the day, though stock ROM comes with gapps so it's not that.
Thanks for your reply,
I installed Watch dog lite and I'm now waiting for an alert. I hope it will give me the name of the culprit
If you are rooted which i assume you are. You can try app from playstore called "lagfix" (fstrim)
Sometimes really helps. Sometimes it doesn't
While I am confident this issue has been reported several times and probably solved by the time I am writing this, still I remain curious to see what could be done right now to solve this.
The story goes that when using Chrome on my phone (XT1068 - Moto G 2014 with Stock 5.0.2) it doesn't take long until the device slows down to a crawl, leading to response times ranging from 10 seconds to a full minute. Either leading to android soft-rebooting or forcing a hard-reboot in order to return the phone to a normal and usable state.
Coincidentally various services tend to get killed as well (The audio player is a very obvious example) which is known behavior during these leaks.
I know the issue may have been solved already in future android builds, but until those are released; what are the current options to combat the above issue?
Don't want to flash CM again for a while as well, trying to keep it stock for as long as necessary
But if it is needed, i've no objections.

I changed my rom last year, from stock 5.1 to cyanogenmod 12.1 running android 5.1.1.
First I want to tell you my experience with my moto x. At first, although the battery was pretty bad, it was the only downside to it. When I bought it, it was on android 4.4.2 (I think). And it worked very well, it was fast and fluid. So after a while, the motorola forced all the time the android 5 update, which I did not want to do. But I gave up and did. From there, my RAM was always full at 70%, I had delay, it got much less fluid experience. I switched to cyanogenmod, because the internal storage space was tiny, it was my only alternative. I earned my storage space. A week ago i discovered that the voice recorder does not work on this rom, when I had to record a class on a class. Some options inside settings crashes, and close by themselves. The phone started to crash and reboot itself. I've added numerous apks from suspicious sources. I uninstalled all my applications and 5 gbs of internal space is still being taken. The memory is always 90% occupied. I can not put many application shortcuts on the desktop or the phone gets even slower. I recently discovered that recovery is no longer working. I can not access the twrp. i tried to flash twrp again, but when i use the recovery option, it just boot the phone again. I think he's corrupted. Root no longer works. I can not play pokemon go even with magisk installed. The camera image is also strange, it has several black spots as if it were dirty. So I gave up the rom. But I do not know what rom to install. I wanted some ROM based on Android 4.4.2 and it was as fast and stable as possible. I'm multi-tasking and I leave many apps open at the same time. I want some definitive rom so I'll never need to change rom again.
