[Q] Need help to salvage phone - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello to all who know much more about Android ROMs than I.
I bought myself a second hand HTC One (Telstra, Australia) and believed that the best thing to do was to get a clean version of Android onto it ASAP. In that endeavor, I downloaded the CyanogenMod 1 click installer and successfully installed CyanogenMod on the device.
Unfortunately it's now a slow, buggy, battery draining mess. After dealing with it for a while and realising I was getting more and more issues more frequently (WiFi access is buggy at best and often blocks all data, camera is incredibly slow, random reboots, battery life is despicable, among other issues), I spent several days trawling XDA trying to return my device to some version of Android released by HTC themselves, without success. This was at least 2 months ago, and I ended up giving up and dealing with it.
I can't deal with it anymore, and need help. As stated I've trawled the forums and tried numerous means of returning the device to some version of stock but nothing worked as described in the threads. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to either purchase the device for cheap, or return it to stock for a price? I looked at the Marketplace option but it directs me to swappa.com which doesn't have an Australian section.
I have certainly learned my lesson that this kind of modding is not for me, and I won't be going there in future. Hoping someone can help.
Thanks in advance, Jamieson.

Well if you have read many threads on here you would have noticed the first question ask is can you post the results from fastboot getvar all.
without that their is no way anyone here can help you. When you post the information please remove the Serial no and IMEI from the results .. we don't need those.

Screen lock

Hi Guys.
Some time ago I did a ROM upgrade using one of the ROMS from this site. But for the life of me can't remember who's it was. I'm afraid I'm just not in the same league as you guys on this site who seem to be absolute wizards.
On boot up I am running vs 2.26. I do recall it was one of the first versions that looked like Mobile 6.
Anyway, the ROM has been absolutely fantastic with never a hiccup and has made my phone perfect for me such that I wouldn't consider changing it.
I just have one small problem that I am sure is just a simple registry fix away.
Since upgrading I no longer have the screenlock function available to me and as a result I keep dialling people by mistake.
I have checked the Wiki before posting this to see if anyone else had the problem but can't find anything.
Can anyone please advise me of a fix.
Thanks a stack guys. You all provide an awesome service

[Q] Rooting

Hi, i am a relative noob to android phones, but my gf went and got herself a LG Optimus(swift) and i have decided i would quite like an android device aswell. However as much as i like her touchscreen, i cant use it as a typing device due to a little medical problem, so i thought the hard keyboard would be great, but the G1 does not have alot of features and is limited. I recently found out that you can "root" a device and install newer versions of Android, would this give the phone more features than it initially had?
thanks for any help you might be able to offer, i have tried to find out on google but i have not been able to find anything out, its rather infuriating LOL
thanks again,

[Q] Where to find STOCK ROMs for Galaxy Tab?

Howdy all.
Just got a new AT&T Galaxy Tab and for the love Christ these telco's are making it really difficult to do anything with our phones (or, tablets in this case).
For the first time ever, my near-universal, grandfathered AT&T unlimited data SIM was rejected by a device. I've been clinging to this SIM for over 3 years, because it worked in everything.
(I'm familiar with changing the APN, just providing an example of how aggressive the telco's are in preventing us from modding our own property, as there's no contract for the GTab, and even though we're paying full price for it, we still can't use it universally.)
I've spent the greater part of this weekend poring through the forum and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anything useful in these forums. Many threads are outdated, or just plain wrong, and considering the prices of these devices, I'm reluctant to just plug in and start running hacks on the GTab w/o first understanding the dev history behind what I'm about to do. I've always been somewhat self-proficient with applying hacks and installing ROMs, as I've been doing it for years, but simply finding the requisite information is becoming quite a challenge lately.
With that in mind, I'm looking for the AT&T STOCK ROM to have saved and ready just in case something goes sideways. However, even the stickied thread here includes dead links. The target page is in Korean, but I've seen the HTTP 404 error enough times to recognize it in any language.
Is anyone familiar with any 3rd party repositories with that host the stock ROMs? Perhaps someone has compiled a dump?
TIA...

Finally Stock firmwares site: Samfirmware.com
Thanks for the reply, very helpful info.
I've been reading quite a bit on the forums, and I've noticed folks are having serious issues with ROMs from samfirmware.com, due to the different ROM versions Samsung is distributing with the GTab.
I'm trying to determine the cause of those issues? Are they related to flashing the wrong hardware rev with the wrong ROM, or are they primarily due to locked bootloaders?
I haven't tried anything with my GTab yet, as finding conclusive information is difficult, and to put it bluntly, I'm scared sh*tless that I'll brick it like so many others have?
I'm figuring AT&T is probably going to be the hardest to flash, considering how militant AT&T has been "protecting" our GTab's.

Well Flashing wrong firmware on tab is one of the reasons for problems. Also samfirmware's ROMs have protected bootloader which prevent downgrading or installing custom ROMs.
As for AT&T its always recommended to do backup before flashing any other firmware on an AT&T (or any TAB for that matter). Many ways to do backup. through CWM (clockworkmod) or ROTO backup.

[Q] Note freezes. Do you have the same problem?

Hi People.
I have my note since december and about a month later it started having problems.
The phone freezes and has to be rebooted, and then when you try to reboot it will be taking a long time with many many unsuccessful reboot trials in between.
I sent it to the service once and they just restored the factory settings(Thanks samsung because i didn't know how to do that myself) and then i sent it a second time, this time to samsung technical service where they diagnosed the phone as okay and blamed it on the battery.
It's been 4 days since the phone returned and today i have had the same issues with the new battery as well, so i am now pretty sure it's the phone.
before i call samsung and make a fuss about it to some manager i would like some feedback from you guys.
Has any of you encountered this issue with his phone?
On a scale of 1 to 10 how smooth would you describe your experience(in terms of issues and frustration) with the Note?
Also What would you guys do in my shoes?
Should i yell at them for selling me a malfunctioning phone and not repairing it at the service twice?
How do you think i should handle it?
Does samsung policy incluce giving you a new phone if it's having problems? When are you entitled to get one?
Lots of questions i know but i really need the answers. Thanks for the patience.

hi Android 4.9 Marshmallow i m using note for 3 month ,i haven't noticed any freezing problem i m in stock non rooted rom and use launcher and lockers and lots of games and aaps but every thing runs smooth ...
for smoothness i wood give 9 out of 10 .
i dont know about ur country but u should ask them of a replacement ..
Thank you Gaurav99 for your answer, and good that you mentioned some specifics because i forgot to say that i am also on stock firmware, non rooted and i use Touchwiz default launcher.
I went with the phone as it was supposed to be by samsung.
I am going to need some more feedback from you guys. Please post.
My phone only hangs when I multitask heavily while downloading huge torrents in the background (adownloader)
Are you sure it's not a rouge app that's behind your issue ?
Maybe you do have a defective device but please do check your background apps first, cuz it really is a pain to get a replacement device from Samsung if you can't replicate the issue at the service centre.
Good luck.
Hi!
I have my Note since December and wanted to share my experience so you can come to a conclusion.
The stock firmware that was originally on the device was let's say 6 out of 10 smooth.
With the first Official update that was improved to 7-8 out of 10.
With the Official ICS update came close to 9.
Of course i must inform you that the time i use stock Roms are very few. Custom Roms (GB and ICS) are way smoother and lag-free.
Before starting to panic and going after Samsung, i advice you to Root your phone.
See if the "problem" continues.
IMO your experiencing the lag of the stoch firmware right know.
Hope i hepled! Good luck!

What's a "rouge" app?
My problem started again today right after i installed an app from 4shared. As the app opened it searched for a license to function properly and that's where my phone hung and i had to reboot.
It rebooted normally but shortly after it froze again and from then and on the phone could not reboot properly.
In the end i decided to wipe it clean and see whether the problem persisted.
It did. It got stuck right after the boot of the initial run of the wiped firmware.
The last thing i did with my phone before problems began was fill it with apps. I installed about 12-3 apps and two of them were from 4shared.
The way it happened this time(in relation to 4shared) made me think. But it's true that it happened in exactly the same way as before i send the phone to samsung for repairs, and then it used to happen with more "innocent" apps.
So can you describe what the procedure for a device replacement is?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Sotiris.
I want to try and root it and see if anything changes, but it would suck if there was a problem with the phone and the custom ROM patched it up temporarily for a few months. Imagine my distress when after a few months the issues come back suddenly, it's to going to be more than frustrating and i am going to regret not dealing with the issue when i could(now).
So since the company does not cover me if i root my phone or install a custom ROM, i have decided that i am not going to do those things.
I am going to ask them to take responsibility for a device that i paid dearly to have in my possession demanding the simple, logical and necessary demand that it works properly.
You see it's not a matter of "lag". It's a matter of functionality. My phone simply.does.not.work.
Imagine being afraid to install your favorite apps on your phone in fear that tomorrow you might have to wipe it and lose everything to restore the phone to working order. Beats the idea of a "smart"phone doesn't it?
Thanks for the feedback, and Να σαι καλά!

[Q] Need advice on picking a rom

Hi there, long time lurker first time poster here.
I have an AT&T branded galaxy captivate that I rooted and unlocked. I've been happy enough with it, but I'm still running froyo here, and I have been thinking about an update to 4.x
I see many options out there in the way of roms, and I am confident enough in updating the phone, I've done other phones both android and ios for friends and customers (I'm a computer tech)
But now that I have decided to commit to an upgrade, I'm feeling a little conflicted on what rom to pick. They all have their points, but since I litterally use mine for the phone function, and a few games and barely for work reasons (my professional apps only include a wifi scanner, dell service tag lookup, and a few other little techie apps) I really just don't know what to pick.
So if you folks would be so kind as to share opinions, perhaps recommend a rom, and perhaps let me know what kind of experience you had with the particular one you installed, I would be very grateful.
Oh, and I don't know if the phone will be unlocked after the update or not, I wasn't quite clear on that, so if somoene would be kind enough to let me know on that point as well it would be nice. I have it unlocked so when I pop outside the country I can just grab a cheap pre paid sim off the shelf in whatever country I visit and use that for local calls while I'm there. Saves a ton on the bill since it seems like NO ONE in the US provides decent rates for calling while out in the world. I just drop my original sim back in when I come home, or if I need to call back home while out I just eat the charge.
tl;dr
Which 4.x captivate rom do you prefer and why?

I've been using CyanogenMod since version 7, and I like it pretty well. 10.1 is very clean, based on Jelly Bean 4.2, and it has few flaws. It's my daily driver. Having said that, I've also used other Gingerbread ROMs like Andromeda and other JB ROMs like Captivating. Each one has its pluses and minuses. The best thing you can do is read user reviews, do some research, and pick one that works for you. As far as unlocking, I have no expedited with that, but my guess would be that that's a function of the SIM card and the hardware, so I would guess once unlocked, always unlocked. But hopefully someone smarter than I am in that area will correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for that falcon, I appreciate the reply.
I have seen reviews of pros and cons in various threads, but they are all mainly focused on the rom being discussed in that theread, what I was hoping to get was a kind of comparison of opinions between the various choices here. CyanogenMod was one I looked over, but the bugs made me hesitate, I'd prefer slightly more stability than what it currently offers, though once the next revision hits I will see how many of those bugs are fixed and wait to see if new ones crop up, and if it seems decent (no data loss or phone freeze bugs left) I will likely give it a try, but for now, I'll play with something else a bit more stable and see how it goes.
Thanks again for the input!
EDIT:
Well, while I was waiting I decided I would flash a few roms and see how they ran on the phone one after another, after getting that status 7 error on captivating, hellybean, slimbean, and cyanogen, I finally got LaNight to instal, sooooo I guess unless someone can tell me why the others are all coming up staus 7 and failing, I'm going with LaNight found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003346
Odd, I checked the md5 on all the files, followed the directions on each install, tried them all from speedmod as well, tried restoring back to stock firmware and re doing speedmod with odin and still all but LaNight fail with a status 7 and abort.
Strange indeed.

Have you tried getting corn kernel instead of speedmod? That might fix your status 7 error.
Also, when flashing a JB ROM, you'll have top flash them twice as it repartitions the first time.
And when it comes to stability, AoCP and AOKP are my fav but I heard a lot of good things about other ROMs as well (like captivating).

I shall have to try that since it seems LaNight wont allow my phone to connect to the mobile network, it keeps telling me "error when searching for network" when I try to connect to it after popping in my new sim card. I just went down to swap back to AT&T since I'm switching to gophone now that my contract is up with verizon.

3 things can cause this, you IMEI is wrong; APN is wrong or you need another modem.
