Hey all,
After several failed attempts at trying to get the N6 from the Google Play Store (It keeps disappearing from my cart... that's fun.), I'm thinking of just getting it from either T-Mobile or Sprint, and transferring it over to Verizon (current carrier). But with that, I have a couple of questions...
1) Are both versions of the phones rootable/unlockable? I realize that they're the same phone, however I know carriers do weird things with them so you never know. (Coming from the Note 2, and Verizon likes to lock everything down...)
2) Does the Sprint version of the phone have any kind of carrier branding? Also, I read somewhere that the T-Mobile version doesn't have branding, though can someone confirm this?
3) Will the T-Mobile version work with Verizon? I read on here that the Sprint version works just fine...
Thanks to anyone who can give some insight to any of these questions.
Edit: Also, which variant would you choose? (Assuming I can get either that is...)

these "variants" are all exactly the same phone, no difference radio wise. tmobiles nexus 6 is exactly like the nexus 6 that you buy on google play. the only difference is that its bought at a tmobile. anyways, i dont think they will sell it to you, unless you have an account.
Sprint and T-Mobile and google play store are all the same. Once you insert a T-Mobile Sim card the VPL's will be installed which is just one app, T-Mobile my account app, which you can delete., When you insert the sprint sim, there are no VPL's nothing will be installed besides the google apps and no carrier branding. With a sprint card inserted, sprints hands free activation will be on the start up screen. It was a feature built into every n6 no matter where you purchased it. Prob made it easier to update all with OTAs. I would only worry about the att variant.
edited..
How did it go? Did you go with att, Sprint, or tmobile? I'm about to do the same thing

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to give it a couple of days before posting the results. Basically I ordered the Sprint version off of Amazon on Monday, and it arrived on Tuesday. Trimmed down the Micro SIM card in my phone (from the Note 2) down to the Nano SIM required for the Nexus 6. Popped in into my new Nexus, and it worked just fine! No issues at all, and I didn't have to call Verizon or do anything with them really. It simply worked after trimming it and placing it into the new phone.
In addition (if anyone is following this thread) I will answer my own questions in sequence.
1) Now I'm not entirely sure about the T-Mobile version, but the Sprint variant is fully unlockable and rootable. As tdoughone mentioned, this phone is EXACTLY the same thing you would be getting from the Google Play Store with the exception that there is a Sprint SIM card in the phone. (The T-Mobile variant may be the same exact way in that regard.) That is literally the only difference.
2) On the Sprint variant ordered from Amazon, there is NO carrier branding. So if you do decide to order it from there, there is no indication that the phone was any part of Sprint. (i.e. How Verizon likes to plaster their logo approximately fifty million times on their devices' exteriors.)
3) And since I went with the Sprint variant (the T-Mobile variant was on backorder on their webpage), I cannot comment fully on this. But again, as tdoughone has said, I'm assuming that this would be the same exact thing you would be getting from the Google Play Store, but you would more than likely get the T-Mobile SIM kit.
If anyone has any more questions regarding this, I would be more than happy to answer them. To be honest though, I was amazed by how [insanely] easy it was to get this phone up and running. If I had purchased a phone from Verizon, there definitely would have been more work involved.
Also, thank you for all the helpful posts! It was greatly appreciated!

no matter where you buy it, its the exact same phone. now the att variant does have a locked sim(and other crap), but is the same phone when the sim is unlocked. tmobiles version is the same as google play, nothing tmobile added to it, and will work on all providers.

Did you set it up on a plan? If so, which did you choose? I thought about doing this but calling in, cancelling and telling them in keeping the phone doesn't sound fun.

I just got the phone off of contract, and paid full price for it. I just didn't want to deal with any of the BS of trying to cancel it, and paying termination fees and that.

May I ask if your Sprint Nexus 6 was purchased from this link?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PI1G69K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I read the reviews and one guy claimed that the Sprint set he bought from Amazon is sim-locked.
Hoping that's not the case!

Yup! That is the same exact one I ordered! Like I said, I didn't have any issues with it whatsoever. More than likely though, those people have no idea what they're talking about. However, if you are worried about it doing something weird, DO NOT start the phone until you have your own SIM card in it. It'll come with a Sprint one pre-installed inside the phone - don't boot it up until you replace it. That's what I ended up doing, and I haven't had any issues with Verizon at all.

Yeah, I thought it was kind of odd that they placed it in the phone, I figured they would have it just off to the side or something? But I think I replied to your thread about the same question, oh well... You now have two answers from the same person.
I'm on Verizon and I got it from T-Mobile for same reasons. While there are small issues, it works well. LTE speeds on par as iPhone 6+. Highest I've seen was 80mbps. Voice quality is pretty good, the only issue I really have had was no voice and data as well as LTE switching.
Sprint nexus 6 is more expensive and is sim locked. My business partner got his there while I got mine at T-Mobile and mine worked out of the box and he had to return his lol.

The posts above you just indicated that their Sprint version is unlocked. Sprint sells the N6 for $648 retail and TMO sells it for $649.92.

Oh no.. this is bad....
Buying from Best Buy??
So whats to stop a person from buying a Sprint N6 from BB (to take advantage of that 18 mo. financing) and cutting down my Note2 sim and heading off into the Nexus sunset? I was told that all the phones are sim locked from BB.
Thoughts?
Well, the only thing I can add is that I paid full price for mine. So technically, it should not have been tied to any kind of Sprint account. If you did the same thing(s) that I did, I would think that you would have the same results as myself. With a couple confirmed successes, I would say that you would be fine and that it isn't SIM locked?

This has never mattered before, all Sprint devices were sold locked. People bought iphone 6 etc full price and can't get unlock from Sprint, they refuse. This is all supposed to change for devices MANUFACTURED after Feb 11, 2015.
I thought the sprint N6 was supposed to be sim unlocked however. Now it seems some are saying the initial handsets released were. But the most current batch is locked. That's totally F'd up, mine is set to deliver today.

After attempting to buy from 3 retail tmobile stores (who wouldn't sell me the phone without a plan) I ordered my nexus 6 via the phone. Several retail workers and customer support agents on the phone have told me I need to keep service on my phone for 45days to get the unlock code from them. Currently awaiting delivery (back ordered )
What happens if I don't wait for the unlock code And I just insert my Verizon sim?
The tmobile nexus 6 is suppousedly the same as the Unlocked GP nexus 6, so what exactly is unlocked?
I'm coming from a note 4 (my note 4 lags a lot more than everyone else and I can't take it anymore, couldn't figure out the cause)
will the nexus 6 have multi windows at all?
Also how do you use the notifications on this (I played with a 2013 moto x, is it the same?)
Sorry for all the question and thanks in advance for any help.
I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

nothing, except youll have a code that does absolutely nothing. i bought my n6, n5, and n4 via tmobile. they have never ever sim locked a nexus, never. its exactly the same n6 that you can buy at the play store.

Thank you, you pretty much saved me 45 days of phone bill payment.
Im assuming if i dont activate the tmobile sim, i can cancel/not have any charges.
I prev had the z1s with them for like a month and canceled due to their poor customer service , surprised they let me sign up again. (Then again theyre the ones who wanted me to sign up, i just wanted to buy the phone outright and use it on my unlimted data verizon line)
T-Mo Nexus 6 on VZW
OK, so I see that the T-Mo Nexus 6 works fine on VZW, however I see that all of you said you bought it outright, how about buying subsidized? Will it work if on VZW then, since the phone is getting activated, will it lock it to work only on T-Mo? Thanks for the help in advanced!

As stated above T-Mobile doesn't sim lock phones.... They also don't subsidize phones because they are the "uncarrier" so it will work if you pop the Verizon sim in assuming you have a bank sim ready to go.
As what others have said, T-Mobile doesn't lock the phones.
AT&T and Sprint are on a different story, AT&T I've heard locked their phones via carrier.
Sprint doesn't lock their phones but some people have reported buying them from Amazon have carrier locked so be careful on that.
T-Mobile will however make you stay with them for one month (I believe) before you can cancel. If you cancel, your EIP balance is due. If you pay outright, you'll still have to stick with them for a month. At least thats my understanding of it.
U.S. Cellular also sells the phone now but I'm not sure about their policy.
I just bought a white 64gb off swappa, anything in particular to check for? (My tmobile one is backordered).
Pretty sure i overpayed, but as long as the phone is like new i'll be happy.

Wow.... I would have definitely waited a bit longer than pay that much for a phone.
Theres availability, you just need to stick around for them. Have a auto refresh script that alerts you when its available. They randomly add them in stock.

Glad I caught this thread. Few questions to get clarification:
Assuming I buy the N6 from T-Mobile (subsidized or not) - what is their cancellation policy? Someone mentioned 45 day scenario where you can cancel without penalty? Is that true?
Thanks!

They dont do contracts. Just dont activate their sim and call them up saying you want to cancel.
If youre looking for a 32g id recomend buying off motorola.
Some one is selling new Nexus 6 with 64GB in blue for $545. This seems like a good deal. The model number seems to be XT1103. Here is a link to the listing.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-S...e-/131500686305?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
I sent a question to the seller asking if this phone will run on Verizon. He replied that the phone only works on GSM networks like ATT or T-Mobile. Can I buy this phone and activate it on Vz? I am fine if the phone shows up as "Unknown." I just want to make sure I can get 3G/CDMA and 4G/LTE on Verizon.
Based on reading a bunch of posts, it seems like I can get this to work, but would like some confirmation by the XDA experts.
thanks,

There are several extensive threads on this topic, including one titled FCC and Verizon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3069915
To summarize, you will have the following difficulties:
1. Hard to activate a new SIM. You can eventually get past this.
2. If this phone is on your account's primary line you will not be able to make plan changes online (not through the mobile app and not through the website either).
3. If you are on a More Everything plan and eligible for the out-of-contract discount (which you must be if you're considering paying full price for a phone) you will lose the discount, meaning you will pay $300/year more.
So if you're on More Everything I strongly recommend buying a Verizon branded N6 or switching carriers.

He says he's fine with it showing up as "unknown" but it's far from clear he's aware of the other issues. Who would want to pay $300/year more for no reason? Just buy the Verizon version.

I only want the 64 GB version which Verizon is not offering.
My work pays for my phone service. I have to buy the device.
I really want the M9 due to the smaller size, but it seems that I can't run GPE on the Vz M9 which is why I am looking at the N6. Folks with the 6" screens tell me that I will get used to the larger phone.

I see. Other than the issues I listed it should work well. A few people have complained about voicemail and HD Voice but ultimately those features do seem to work fine and I've had no issues with them.

I came from a tiny Galaxy S3 screen and I was worried the N6 would be too big. It took about... five minutes and I would not go back to the tiny screens again.
Edit: BTW if you are on a "business plan" (where your work is the account administrator) you may have to jump through additional hoops to get VoLTE enabled but it is possible. Search these forums and lemme know if you have trouble finding the thread. Actually that may be true for all N6s not just Moto/GPE-purchased devices, not sure.
I've been doing research for the past couple of days and I have seen that when the Nexus 6 came out that there were basically just 2 different models out. The International and the North American models. I'm coming from a Galaxy S4 from Verizon and I honestly can say that I just find TouchWiz ugly. I have rooted it but it was too late, the damage Verizon has done already left a huge enough impact that I am too afraid to put a rom on it in fear of the consequences. It was my first smartphone and I was happy with it when I first got it and now I am not to fond of it any longer. With the way Verizon's new plans are, I'm hoping of buying the Nexus 6 from them and slowly paying it off.
I apologize for long intro so i'll get to the point. I am curious about the differences of the Nexus 6 straight from Google and the Nexus 6 straight from the Verizon store if I buy it from them. I would prefer to buy straight from Verizon since I'm a college student and money is very tight and the slow payments seem to work out better in the long run even though I will be paying more if I buy it straight from Verizon. , but if getting the "clean" Nexus 6 is worth the better investment then i'll save up more money and pay for it all right then and there.
I've also read that there have been issues in the past where people have bought a Nexus 6 elsewhere and when they came to Verizon to activate it, that Verizon turned them away and that it wasn't possible. Is this still happening ?
Lastly, if any of you have a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon:
- How has it held up to this point ?
- What are the different things Verizon has done to the phone that weren't there in the past ?
and any other advice you can give to me to make a good purchase decision.
I just want a smartphone that I can root, put roms on, experiment with on XDA, has near-vanilla android but also works with Verizon.
I apologize for such a long post and this is my first ever thread on XDA and i'm new so I hope you may bear with me. I just want to make sure I am giving enough information to where some of you guys can help get my questions answered so I won't resent purchasing a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon if I do.
Thank you very much for reading and helping if you choose to.
P.S. I'm unsure whether to post this in the General Forum for the Nexus 6 or the Help and Troubleshooting forum of the Nexus 6 . I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum.

I have a N6 I bought in March from Verizon and I love it. Other than the small Verizon branding on the back, and two Verizon apps pre-installed (My Verizon Mobile and Verizon Visual Voicemail), I don't believe there is anything different between it and a Google bought Nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The preinstalled apps can likely be uninstalled as they were probably pulled in automatically based on your SIM card. From what I've read, the shipping firmware is the same as the Play Store/Motorola model.

That's great to hear honestly. If there is no difference other than two Verizon apps then this is officially my first choice for when I get a new device with Verizon. I'm hoping I am smart enough to root it, flash Pure Nexus and make it my own.
Thank you for the response.

That's also great to hear. Definitely going to get the Nexus 6 soon then once I can get a new phone. Getting really tired of my Galaxy S4.
I just bought a new 32gb unlocked blue nexus 6 at best buy today for $350 + tax
It was the best deal I could find. I traded in some games and got the total down to $317. The phone is amazing, I came from a verizon S5 and it was well worth the purchase not to see that TouchWiz **** all over my phone
Thanks for starting this discussion. I have a GS5, and I'm fed up with the Verizon crap but it's the best network around where I live.
My question, can you root the N6 purchased from Verizon?

Does anyone know if I can buy the Nexus 6 (unlocked) from Best Buy with the special they are having right now and use it on Verizon ? I was going to wait for 2 months to get an early upgrade by turning my phone in and getting the Nexus 6 but if I can buy it for 350 right now then I definitely want to jump on it. I am just curious if I can buy it from Best Buy and use it on Verizon without any issues. If I do buy it then what do I need to do in order to make it work with Verizon ?
I really want a phone I can root easily, flash roms and experiment with. The Nexus 6 seems like the perfect device and with it at $350 right now, its a steal !
Does anyone know if this is just a special and for how long ? Or is it indefinitely?

Service meaning repairs in case you have to send the phone in for some reason. It will work fine on Verizon. You can either activate it through Verizon and get a new SIM card or just switch an existing (already activated) nano SIM from an existing Verizon device into your new Nexus 6. Either method works fine.

$350-399 the going rate now. They on clearance for the new ones probably in November. Best Buy will match Internet price. So as long as Amazon and others have that price can just tell them and they will look it up on their PC. If you have a Verizon nano sim can just pop it in. They have the IEMIs now so they can activate for you. Shouldn't have a problem. I cut down my micro sim to fit before they would activate them.

Forgot to address your first question. There are 2 unlocks. Carrier and bootloader. Previous poster was referring to bootloader unlock. They are all carrier unlocked except for ATT. ATT requires to pay for the device in full and be active on their service for 30 days before can use another sim. Bootloader unlock is for modding. We unlock the bootloader and if need to send for warranty we put back to stock and locked.

This answers similar question I've had since I have Verizon as my carrier. I found some good deals on swappa, and wondered if I got one from there, if I'd be able use it on Verizon.

You can use any on any carrier unless it is the ATT carrier locked. Also has to be NA version. Not International. I got Google version on Verizon. Everything works including tether on my Unlimited Data Plan.

Wait, so the International one's won't work with Verizon? The one Best Buy is selling on clearance is the GSM International model. So even though its an amazing deal, It won't work with Verizon because its the International model ?

The US model is XT1103, which is what Best Buy should stock, and it will work on any US carrier. The XT1100 is the International model and would only work on AT&T/T-Mobile in the US (or any carrier that uses their network) as it doesn't have all the necessary bands for other carriers. Most places don't even carry the International model for sale in the US.

Okay, that helped clear up some questions I was having. Thank you. I guess its time to go buy that sweet Nexus 6 once I get my check. Ugh, i can't wait.
If you had to recommend a phone for a beginner who wants to root, put roms on his device and experiment with it, what would you recommend to them ?
I am trying to activate an N6 from Amazon on Sprint, and they are saying only Sprint devices can be activated. Maybe I didn't do enough homework before buying this, but is that correct? I was under the impression that unlocked phones could go anywhere*. Can someone confirm before I send my phone back to Amazon?
Thanks!

bump, anyone?
Heading into the store today, but want to be armed with as much info as possible.
All devices should work on all networks, they are lying to you if they say it's not going to work.if
If they decline to give you a SIM and you already have a sprint phone with a SIM card, just put the SIM in your nexus. If your SIM is too big for the nexus, but a SIM cutter for $5 from amazon or eBay to cut your SIM to fit the nexus.
I'll keep updating this thread for reference if anyone else has a similar problem.
I went to the Sprint store today and the people there, at least my local one, are so much more helpful than customer care reps. Anyway, they were not able to activate it in the store either. Their system wasn't 100% explicit in giving the reason, but the guy I worked with believe the ESN to be in their system, but the phone was active on a 3rd party carrier (one of the smaller carriers). Since it was an Amazon Warehouse deal and appeared to be an open box, this is entirely plausible that someone activated and returned the phone. Him and another employee at the store said Amazon phones should activate no problem, so I am returning mine for a new one.
I did run an ESN check though Swappa, and they show it as clear and ready to activate, so it is hard to say what is really going on. I contacted Amazon and I have a BNIB replacement coming for mine, so hopefully all should be well.
I don't know if this applies to my situation since the Sprint store thought the ESN was in their system already (and several articles I've seen state that Sprint has whitelisted devices not from Sprint or Google Play), but here is some information from the SprintAMA account on reddit they may come in handy for someone about activating a non-sprint nexus. https://np.reddit.com/r/Sprint/comments/2mpr7s/update_regarding_the_nexus_6_from_motorola_on/”

Yep. I've dealt with poorly trained customer reps with Verizon before as well. The first guy I spoke with (which was on Sprint Chat) was pretty explicit that the phone had to be from Sprint. The next person I spoke to on Chat didn't really offer much information, other than suggesting I go to a store. The guys at the store were super helpful and said it shouldn't be a problem. It seems that in this case the phone may be already active on another network, but hard to say for sure. We'll see how it goes when my replacement gets here Saturday.

I've seen others had problems getting a SIM from Sprint. When I first came to Sprint I bought an LG G2 from Swappa (Sprint variant LS980) and they gave me a SIM with no hassle. I had cut down my SIM from that phone for the N6 but they went ahead and gave me a new one anyway* and said they'll give me one any time.
*A new nano sim for the replacement N6 when I receive it. I'm just letting my LG limp by without LTE until then.

When I got my N5, I had to go through 3 sim cards before I got one to work. Sprint CS is so behind the times when it comes to new technology, IMO.
Got my new nexus in today and activated without issue. Sprint wouldn't let me activate online for some reason so I took it to the store and it went fine.
This phone kicks ass btw
the store needs to put a click it ticket in to add the esn to their network, takes about 48 hours, and youll need a sim from them which the store can order or customer care can order.the part number for the sim is SIMGLW426C
Yeah sprint is a pain to activate devices not bought in their store, I've had friends with similar issues but with a Nexus 6 they've always been able to get it in the end.
Just a hassle...

For whatever reason I couldn't activate the phone myself online, but the store was able to in about 15 mins. Glad I didn't have to wait a couple days for a click it ticket to go though.
You should request an invitation to the Google Project Fi! Then you can use both Sprint and T-Mobile as well as WiFi for calling. I'm just porting an unlimited data Verizon number over to Fi...

I appreciate the help, but this has been resolved. For the record, the Nexus 6 from Sprint or others absolutely works on Sprint so long as it is the XT1103 North American model, including LTE and CDMA. The XT1103 is the same phone sold by Sprint.
The original issue I had with Sprint had to do with my phone from Amazon being an open-box and previously/currently activated on another carrier.

its NOT a different model, its the same exact model. every nexus 6 that is sold in the united states is the exact same model, with the same radio, with the same available bands. and yes, it will work on project fi just fine. what you just said has nothing based in fact behind it. the only other version fir the n6, is the european/workd version, that isnt really sold in the united states, unless its in ebay or similar.
I've just submitted an order to buy Pixel 5 from 'Visible' (a US carrier, Verizon based MVNO), and now i am kinda thinking... i should have asked about it here first. Visible's rep has promised (on chat) their phones are unlocked, so this shouldn't be an issue, but are they carrier-customized in any way or form? Anyone here got any experience? I am sure there is still some time window i can cancel this.
The reason i went on it is because of their "buy it, and get a free wireless charger at activation and a $200 gift card after 2 month of service" (Google it for more details), with a rather attractive plan (in US terms).
It's hard to know for sure. Some of the MVNO's have customized firmware on their phones and some don't. From what I've seen their phones are supposed to be unlocked. The only negative I've seen on them is than any streaming you do is only 480P.

I don't care all that much about streaming, also, if i really, REALLY want to stream something in high res, i can probably VPN from the phone into my home network (or into a commercial VPN server). Anyway, my current check list when the phone arrives is currently - check for SIM lock on both physical SIM and eSIM, check if OEM unlock available and not grayed out (unrelated to SIM locking, but there are some rare reports on this), check if the "gap" isn't too bad, test the proximity sensor, check if there is any carrier bloatware on it. Did i miss any important points/popular issues?
Sounds like a good deal.
Visible is NOT technically an MVNO. It is completely owned and operated by Verizon. I've heard good things from people that use it.
I would guess the phone you receive would be the Verizon variant, but that's completely a guess.

I hope not, and the order confirmation does explicitly mentions "GA01316-US", which is an unlocked, non-Verizon model.
Is Visible an MVNO? I suppose, despite being owned by Verizon, its still a separate company, which doesn't operate its own mobile towers, so i guess it technically is an MVNO after all.
Anyway, will post here after i receive the device. Would be kinda disappointing if its a Verizon model (i may want to root at some point, not exactly a nice thing to have a bootloader you can't unlock). Would be a showstopper if its SIM-locked or even just eSIM locked, i am going to verify that by putting my old Cricket SIM in before activating theirs, and also loading a Ubigi profile onto an eSIM, and if its locked, and they can't unlock it for me, the device is going back. I've EXPLICITLY asked a rep about this after all.
BTW, judging by a Google search that produces mostly Reddit results, Visible sells mostly unlocked devices (seemingly all of them except Visible-exclusives).
It should not be a Verizon varient, it should be unlocked.

I was sure i've posted it here, i've got a device, its a unlocked variant, not Verizon, its fully unlocked (tested on physical SIM and eSIM), and got no carrier bloatware on it.

I'm shortly switching to Verizon and I'm taking a look at Visible and Verizon prepaid after seeing your post and talking to my son who's a Verizon engineer, I haven't decided on which though.

Actually just registered an account to answer your question. Got a pixel 5 from the "Visible" deal by porting a number in. The model number is identical to the the unlocked one sold from Google store. It bootloader unlockable, so already unlocked and put in magisk and stuff. (It is carrier unlocked as well) Enjoy the deal!
Mint says they only stream 480p too but I can simply select 720p on up on my Pixel 2 and I get a bump, no VPN required.
Visible has good offers but the service is no good. At least in my area. I cannot wait to go back to AT&T. Verizon has fast coverage but AT&T is more consistent. I tried it for the $100 promotional credit but I will be going back to my original provider.
