Are the Google Play version and T-Mobile version the same?

I'm on T-Mobile, and would prefer to buy it from them because I can just pay it month by month or if I want, more each month. You guys get it.
Anyways, are the phones the exact same on the Google Play store and buying it straight from T-Mobile?

Yep. Everything in the box is identical to the Play Store version except for the manual, which has a T-Mobile logo on it instead of the Nexus logo.

Its also important to note that all review devices that were sent out were all T-Mobile versions due to the manual, insinuating that Google's main stock is likely indistinguishable from T-Mobile's stock of the N6 in terms of "differences" between. Also the head Product Manager at T-Mobile confirmed that there will be no carrier bloat or tampering with their stock of the N6.
Buying from T-Mobile is the safest carrier when it comes to Nexus devices. They have never tampered with Nexus devices before and its going to be the same for this Nexus.

This is great because we potentially walk into store and pick up the N6 earlier than Google play delivery. One thing I worry about is any difference in CID that may delay OTAs? Is it the consensus here that besides that piece of manual, the phones are identical?

The Nexus 5 I got from T-Mobile received the same exact updates and used the same exact software as the Play Store version. The only difference was the T-Mobile logo on the box, and with reviewers receiving a mix of carrier / unlocked devices when it comes to the Nexus 6 it looks like Google is treating them as identical as well.

So, is the N6 that T-Mobile sells unlocked just like the one they sell at the Play Store?

You mean unlocked as in it can be used on multiple carriers and outside the country? Or unlocked as in the bootloader?
Because if its the former, YES. T-Mobile have sold Nexus devices under the guise of a "World Phone" before, stating that because its not locked by carrier or region it can be used with any Sim in any country depending if the service can support the radios the Nexus has.
If the latter is the question you mean, then technically YES. By default the Nexus devices have a locked bootloader, however its not secure and can be easily unlocked and rooted all the same. T-Mobile does not tamper with locking the bootloader on any of their devices and have not ever done so with the Nexus devices they have sold previously before. This just like previous Nexus hardware will be easy to unlock and root!

Not right now, Only Blue is being sold online and in store at release. Perhaps down the road they might sell the white version but right now they are focused on selling only the Blue.

I meant unlocked as in carrier unlocked. I know Nexus devices are ridiculously easy to unlock and root.

Maybe...maybe not...if everything was identical, really identical, why would this reviewer's retail packaging have "GPE" as in Google Play Edition appended to the end of the model #? Would Motorola really have a separate model # just due to the manual?

People keep getting hardware confused with firmware. The HARDWARE is going to be the same, but until we actually see the phone at T-Mobile, there's no way to know whether it will have the same FIRMWARE. They could quite easily have their own custom firmware (that may be nothing more than added bloat). I'm not saying that this will happen, but it could, and anyone who comes on here and says that it is definitely 100% identical in every way is making an assumption. That assumption may turn out to be true, but at this point, it is still an assumption, not a fact. The same is true for all of the other carriers too. If T-Mobile ends up not having their own firmware, that doesn't absolutely prove that, say, Verizon wont.

Assuming that ends up being true, and they don't change their mind at the last minute (which would certainly be very unlike T-Mobile), then the OP question seems answered. That doesn't mean anything in regards to the other carriers yet, but the OP didn't ask about them.

If everything said in this thread is true, and the phone is unlocked, I should be able to walk into a t-mobile on launch day and purchase one to use on Verizon. Correct?
I know that this has been answered several different ways and everyone keeps saying same phone, but just confirming... lol I want to be sure.

The reason it's been answered so many different ways is that people are really just guessing, or assuming that the same hardware means it will work. The reality is a bit different though.
If you'd said you wanted to take it to AT&T, I'd say it'd almost certainly work, but Verizon, like other CDMA carriers, has been known in the past to whitelist IMEI numbers, and refuse to activate units not on that list. Units sent to that carrier, units sent out directly from the manufacturer (e.g. warranty replacements), and units sent to contractual partners (like the Play Store) are always added to the whitelist. This is why you can be virtually certain that Play Store units will work on Verizon. (Although, as the 2013 version of the Nexus 7 showed, it may take some time.) However, there is enough history to seriously question whether units sent to other carriers will be allowed.
In truth, we simply don't know, and there's NO WAY to know until someone tries it.

Well, I understand the logic behind that. Wouldn't that mean that since most if not all of the test phones sent out were tmobile phones, the video showing that one working on verizon posted by Droid Life prove that it should work.

Time will tell, I understand. I just want one so badly. I've never wanted to pay full retail for a phone so badly only to have it become unavailable immediately upon release.

The phone is unlocked unbranded and no bloat.

Yes....and no.
It would work the same regardless of US Carrier as long as you have a working sim for that carrier to use in the N6.
BUT. And this is a pretty big BUT, T-Mobile stores have confirmed that they will NOT be selling the N6 straight out without contract. They will only sell the device with the intent of selling a plan/upgrade of current customers. Not an off contract purchase.

Small correction. T-Mo will lock bootloaders of Sony devices only.

[Q] Sprint/T-Mobile N6 on Verizon Questions.

Hey all,
After several failed attempts at trying to get the N6 from the Google Play Store (It keeps disappearing from my cart... that's fun.), I'm thinking of just getting it from either T-Mobile or Sprint, and transferring it over to Verizon (current carrier). But with that, I have a couple of questions...
1) Are both versions of the phones rootable/unlockable? I realize that they're the same phone, however I know carriers do weird things with them so you never know. (Coming from the Note 2, and Verizon likes to lock everything down...)
2) Does the Sprint version of the phone have any kind of carrier branding? Also, I read somewhere that the T-Mobile version doesn't have branding, though can someone confirm this?
3) Will the T-Mobile version work with Verizon? I read on here that the Sprint version works just fine...
Thanks to anyone who can give some insight to any of these questions.

these "variants" are all exactly the same phone, no difference radio wise. tmobiles nexus 6 is exactly like the nexus 6 that you buy on google play. the only difference is that its bought at a tmobile. anyways, i dont think they will sell it to you, unless you have an account.

Sprint and T-Mobile and google play store are all the same. Once you insert a T-Mobile Sim card the VPL's will be installed which is just one app, T-Mobile my account app, which you can delete., When you insert the sprint sim, there are no VPL's nothing will be installed besides the google apps and no carrier branding. With a sprint card inserted, sprints hands free activation will be on the start up screen. It was a feature built into every n6 no matter where you purchased it. Prob made it easier to update all with OTAs. I would only worry about the att variant.

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to give it a couple of days before posting the results. Basically I ordered the Sprint version off of Amazon on Monday, and it arrived on Tuesday. Trimmed down the Micro SIM card in my phone (from the Note 2) down to the Nano SIM required for the Nexus 6. Popped in into my new Nexus, and it worked just fine! No issues at all, and I didn't have to call Verizon or do anything with them really. It simply worked after trimming it and placing it into the new phone.
In addition (if anyone is following this thread) I will answer my own questions in sequence.
1) Now I'm not entirely sure about the T-Mobile version, but the Sprint variant is fully unlockable and rootable. As tdoughone mentioned, this phone is EXACTLY the same thing you would be getting from the Google Play Store with the exception that there is a Sprint SIM card in the phone. (The T-Mobile variant may be the same exact way in that regard.) That is literally the only difference.
2) On the Sprint variant ordered from Amazon, there is NO carrier branding. So if you do decide to order it from there, there is no indication that the phone was any part of Sprint. (i.e. How Verizon likes to plaster their logo approximately fifty million times on their devices' exteriors.)
3) And since I went with the Sprint variant (the T-Mobile variant was on backorder on their webpage), I cannot comment fully on this. But again, as tdoughone has said, I'm assuming that this would be the same exact thing you would be getting from the Google Play Store, but you would more than likely get the T-Mobile SIM kit.
If anyone has any more questions regarding this, I would be more than happy to answer them. To be honest though, I was amazed by how [insanely] easy it was to get this phone up and running. If I had purchased a phone from Verizon, there definitely would have been more work involved.

no matter where you buy it, its the exact same phone. now the att variant does have a locked sim(and other crap), but is the same phone when the sim is unlocked. tmobiles version is the same as google play, nothing tmobile added to it, and will work on all providers.

Did you set it up on a plan? If so, which did you choose? I thought about doing this but calling in, cancelling and telling them in keeping the phone doesn't sound fun.

I just got the phone off of contract, and paid full price for it. I just didn't want to deal with any of the BS of trying to cancel it, and paying termination fees and that.

Yup! That is the same exact one I ordered! Like I said, I didn't have any issues with it whatsoever. More than likely though, those people have no idea what they're talking about. However, if you are worried about it doing something weird, DO NOT start the phone until you have your own SIM card in it. It'll come with a Sprint one pre-installed inside the phone - don't boot it up until you replace it. That's what I ended up doing, and I haven't had any issues with Verizon at all.

Thank you so much. My mind is so much more at ease now. Haha. Kinda shocked that the phone is actually shipped with a SIM card pre-installed inside the phone though.

Yeah, I thought it was kind of odd that they placed it in the phone, I figured they would have it just off to the side or something? But I think I replied to your thread about the same question, oh well... You now have two answers from the same person.

I'm on Verizon and I got it from T-Mobile for same reasons. While there are small issues, it works well. LTE speeds on par as iPhone 6+. Highest I've seen was 80mbps. Voice quality is pretty good, the only issue I really have had was no voice and data as well as LTE switching.
Sprint nexus 6 is more expensive and is sim locked. My business partner got his there while I got mine at T-Mobile and mine worked out of the box and he had to return his lol.

The posts above you just indicated that their Sprint version is unlocked. Sprint sells the N6 for $648 retail and TMO sells it for $649.92.

Im sorry but i purchased 2 nexus 6 tonight, one for me and one for the misses. I also have a work iphone5s that i took my nano sim out of and popped it in both nexus and .....BAM
WORKING... Without any issues. If you would like a video for proof id be more than willing to send one along with my reciepts...

Yup! That is the same exact one I ordered! Like I said, I didn't have any issues with it whatsoever. More than likely though, those people have no idea what they're talking about. However, if you are worried about it doing something weird, DO NOT start the phone until you have your own SIM card in it. It'll come with a Sprint one pre-installed inside the phone - don't boot it up until you replace it. That's what I ended up doing, and I haven't had any issues with Verizon at all.

So whats to stop a person from buying a Sprint N6 from BB (to take advantage of that 18 mo. financing) and cutting down my Note2 sim and heading off into the Nexus sunset? I was told that all the phones are sim locked from BB.

Well, the only thing I can add is that I paid full price for mine. So technically, it should not have been tied to any kind of Sprint account. If you did the same thing(s) that I did, I would think that you would have the same results as myself. With a couple confirmed successes, I would say that you would be fine and that it isn't SIM locked?

This has never mattered before, all Sprint devices were sold locked. People bought iphone 6 etc full price and can't get unlock from Sprint, they refuse. This is all supposed to change for devices MANUFACTURED after Feb 11, 2015.
I thought the sprint N6 was supposed to be sim unlocked however. Now it seems some are saying the initial handsets released were. But the most current batch is locked. That's totally F'd up, mine is set to deliver today.

Some one is selling new Nexus 6 with 64GB in blue for $545. This seems like a good deal. The model number seems to be XT1103. Here is a link to the listing.

I sent a question to the seller asking if this phone will run on Verizon. He replied that the phone only works on GSM networks like ATT or T-Mobile. Can I buy this phone and activate it on Vz? I am fine if the phone shows up as "Unknown." I just want to make sure I can get 3G/CDMA and 4G/LTE on Verizon.
Based on reading a bunch of posts, it seems like I can get this to work, but would like some confirmation by the XDA experts.

all US nexus 6 are the same. with a verizon nano sim, it will work on verizon. with a tmobile nano sim, itll work on tmobile. and so on..

To summarize, you will have the following difficulties:
1. Hard to activate a new SIM. You can eventually get past this.
2. If this phone is on your account's primary line you will not be able to make plan changes online (not through the mobile app and not through the website either).
3. If you are on a More Everything plan and eligible for the out-of-contract discount (which you must be if you're considering paying full price for a phone) you will lose the discount, meaning you will pay $300/year more.
So if you're on More Everything I strongly recommend buying a Verizon branded N6 or switching carriers.

I only want the 64 GB version which Verizon is not offering.
My work pays for my phone service. I have to buy the device.
I really want the M9 due to the smaller size, but it seems that I can't run GPE on the Vz M9 which is why I am looking at the N6. Folks with the 6" screens tell me that I will get used to the larger phone.

I see. Other than the issues I listed it should work well. A few people have complained about voicemail and HD Voice but ultimately those features do seem to work fine and I've had no issues with them.

Ah work pays! Now it all makes sense! [emoji14]
I came from a tiny Galaxy S3 screen and I was worried the N6 would be too big. It took about... five minutes and I would not go back to the tiny screens again.
Edit: BTW if you are on a "business plan" (where your work is the account administrator) you may have to jump through additional hoops to get VoLTE enabled but it is possible. Search these forums and lemme know if you have trouble finding the thread. Actually that may be true for all N6s not just Moto/GPE-purchased devices, not sure.

Project Fi compatible with all US carrier issued N6 phones (if unlocked)?

Sorry if this has already been talked about, I couldn't find it.
I think I managed to get one of the-less-than stellar Fi reps on a chat and didn't get an answer I was confident with.
My invite is looking to be ready in 4 weeks. I haven't purchased an N6 yet - I'd much prefer to get one used on eBay. My question is whether one from T-Mo, AT&T, VZW, Sprint will work with Fi assuming it's unlocked - or does it need to be one originally purchased as unlocked and not tied to a carrier at any point?
Is there a preferred go-to device assuming that's true? I read that the AT&T version comes with bloatware.
Bonus question (another I've had trouble getting a clear answer for): Since Sprint uses CDMA last I checked - will international texting work when it latches onto their network? VZW and Sprint have always tooted international texting capabilities but I have not once had CDMA->GSM work when sending or receiving messages from stateside to Europe. Any chance it carries on using GSM?

1st, all Nexus 6 are SIM unlocked, EXCEPT the AT&T version. The AT&T version can be unlocked via a code once the device is paid off, and 60 days have lapsed since it was first registered for service on AT&T.
Any version of the Nexus 6 will work on Fi (including the AT&T version if it has been SIM unlocked).
2nd, the AT&T version and the Verizon version have a few of their carrier apps. These are easily removed. And flashing a new factory image via fastboot does away with them too. So I wouldn't worry about this.
And remember to not confuse bootloader unlocked with carrier unlocked, FWIW.

Thanks @cam30era. I've always just relied on eBay sellers for unlock codes. Never had an issue with it. Is the Nexus any different in that regard? Does your mention of AT&T being the only sim-locked one mean that VZW, etc. sells/sold the N6 as a full priced unlocked N6 just like any other? Thanks.

Nexus 6 is no different than any other device regarding carrier unlocking. All others (VZW etc.) are carrier unlocked out of the box.

Sprint issue
So I own a nexus 6 through Sprint and I still owe money on it (installment billing, not contract) my question is I have a project fi sim card and I want to port my number over (I know I'll owe the remaining balance) but can I do this while I pay my balance off of does it need to be paid off first. I ask for two reasons, one is because its supposed to be carrier unlocked out of box, and two, because I had one project fi card activated already and it worked just fine. Just wanted to make sure

Installment billing is a contract. If you port your number before you finish paying it, Sprint will hit you with the remaining balance - I don't know whether or not they throw in a penalty fee on top of that. You would need to have them unlock it once your account is squared away (or just pay $5 for a code on eBay).

Good luck on the Ebay code. Another user tried to bypass ATT and there was no code available for the N6.

From my understanding a Fi sim card would have been able to activate and work on it, by connecting to Sprint's network only. You can't get out of paying off the rest of the phone and keep it, since that would be stealing and phone companes generally frown upon that kind of thing.

I have every intention of paying it off, bug as for being only to connect to Sprint only. I had it connect to lte and get lte speeds where I live, and where I live Sprint only has 3g while T-Mobile has lte...this is where I get confused as to it not working even though it's already carrier unlocked out of box

Sprint N6 are not carrier locked. You do not not need an unlock code to move your device to Fi. With that said, you are still legally and ethically bound by the termination requirements of your contract.
FWIW: the only US carrier N6 that is carrier locked is AT&T.

Unlocked or carrier model?

I have to root my phones (not wanting to pay $30 for Verizon tether), is anyone aware if the Pixel 4 XL from Verizon will have the bootloader locked, and unable to be rooted? In addition to that, would we see a root for the unlocked version? Thanks

Pretty sure most carrier devices are going to remain locked until you pay it off. At least, that's the logical rationale. I can't imagine they want people unlocking devices they haven't paid for. As far as root, that should be a simple process of just patching the boot.img

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the lock not something they ever lift? My current 2 XL was paid retail but they never allowed me to unlock the bootloader. They do allow for any carrier SIM to be used in it.

If you bought the Verizon Pixel 2 XL it had a locked bootloader. Since it was exclusive to Verizon. The unlocked version directly from Google did not have a locked bootloader. That was the same for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. I am not sure about the Pixel 3a and 3a XL since it was not exclusive to Verizon.
Does anyone know if the Pixel 3a or 3a XL came with a locked bootloader?
EDIT: There's a thread over on the Pixel 3a XL where a bunch of carrier and non-carrier devices had locked bootloaders. I would be careful which device you buy going forward until you hear others chime in on the greyed out unlocked button.
When in doubt, buy directly from Google.

This is correct. Verizon is a mofo. Doesn't make much sense. I mean, you paid for the device, you should be able to do what you want with it

This right here has been the case with Verizon going ALL the way back to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. **** Verizon!

In the case of Tmo with OnePlus and similar phones you could get an unlock (both carrier and bootloader) after the device was paid off. You still have to deal with a little bloat and later updates along with lesser issues. AT&T will have this one and their policies are similar to Verizon so I wouldn't go that way unless you hate yourself. No idea on Sprint, that have nothing in my area so I haven't paid attention. The previous posters were 100 prevent though, buying unlocked is the way. Tmo if you must to get a deal but only after verifying the bootloader can be unlocked.

I currently have a one plus 7pro from T-Mobile that is still financed. The bootloader was locked until you paid off your device and waited the mandatory 45 days. Some were able to talk to T-force and got their devices unlocked early whether they financed or not. I was one of the unlucky ones that could not negotiate with T-force to unlock my device. Luckily there was a nice person that worked for TMobile that was in the forums and was able to unlock my phone. We will see what happens when we get the devices and start working on them. I will be financing my phone with them again next Thursday.

I purchased the Unlocked model. I currently have Pixel 2XL Verizon (Bootloader Locked), not a huge issue. But there are times where I wish I had a rooted phone. Not making that mistake again.

Did you try calling in multiple times? That often works although some people can't seem to catch a break on it. I've been on a number of OP devices and I'm familiar with what you're talking about; Saw it most recently on the 6T but it goes back further. I had them unlock a SGS6 the day I bought it, I paid cash but still the word was it couldn't be done without a dwell period, I remember it being 30 days at that time but maybe it was 45, been a while. In any event the very next year was the one were it turned out Tmo couldn't unlock your bootloader, came from Samsung they said. I remember there being an exploit coming out for that but I had already given away my S7 and moved on to the next thing before they figured that out. Not much over a year later Samsung started the BS with bootloaders on their international unlocked phones and I didn't keep the Note 8 long either. IMO if root is a must it's a good idea to let someone else be the guinea pig and profit from that information unless you've got enough ching to walk away without worrying about it.
I'm pretty sure this phone will also be exactly as you describe on Tmo and I agree with you BTW, just saying the smart money if a man needs to be careful is to wait for the first phones to meet their owners a few of who will unlock and root or attempt to do it. Or as I said in my first post, buy unlocked direct from Goog or Fi if possible.

There is not likely to be any bootloader unlock for the P4 and P4XL for carrier versions unless an exploit is found (which doesn't seem likely anymore). Google does not provide carriers an interface to change the device type, nor do they provide that interface to their own customer service and support teams. It's not a matter of hounding customer service or posting on the right forum because they can't help you. It's an obligation that Google has to meet if they want to keep their big carrier contracts in the United States.

So, the devices are shipped to the carriers already locked? Interesting. for some reason I always thought it was the individual carriers that lock them down and then would unlock it when you fully paid off the device. So you're saying, even if you fully pay off the device, you will never be able to unlock a carrier pixel 4/XL? Wow, that's a bummer.

Correct. Enthusiasts have a channel to bootloader unlock, which is buying directly from Google where Google provides it's own support.
Carriers are only looking to sell you a device that's stable to work on their own networks. What do the carriers have to gain at all from controlling the bootloader unlock? They have nothing to gain from it except a support migraine.

Yeah, that makes sense when you put it that way. Just took me by surprise when OP and it's carrier phones pretty much allow you to do whatever you want to the device, once it's paid off. Still can't stand OP, but I have to admit, that's a check mark in their corner

Keep in mind Google does not require it like Samsung does so it's left up to the carrier. Tmo has been unlocking similar devices and there is little reason to think it wont happen here. In the opposing camp you have Verizon which demands a locked bootloader and few exploits have been found to circumvent it on recent devices. Meanwhile something to consider is that even the unlocked straight from google device is not really unlocked in the way some people think: Before you can unlock the bootloader it absolutely must phone home. Don't give the phone that connection and you cannot unlock it. Samsung does the same thing. We are not in control of our devices anymore, they can pull the plug on unlocking any time they want simply by denying it via that same connection even if you have already unlocked it. Samsung did this a few years ago in just that way and to this date no one has found a way around it that doesn't cause real pain with the wait a week and all that BS.

I called several times and got on with T-force sever times and no luck. I got lucky when the post I described about unlocking and got mine done. I always device finance because of the 0% apr and jump on demand so all I need to is bring my phone, get my new phone and profit.

You mean, ask the people who were dumb enough to buy a locked down device? I'll pass. People that have purchased Verizon's in the past, as you have stated, would obviously know this doesn't apply to them. I was more referring to, since we don't have recovery yet, you would have to patch the boot img manually.

Honestly, I ALMOST got me and my wife's from Verizon (she definitely jumped on the pixel bandwagon). They have a buy one, get one free. Sooo, I kept thinking about root, but ultimately decided I'd rather save $900. Evidently, there's some caveats. One, the get one is for a new line. No biggie, I'll just cancel the one number and add a new one (her phone is paid off, I don't think there's a termination fee after two years). Two, you have to sign up for an unlimited plan. That piece completely wiped the price difference and then some for me. Sooo, I smiled a bit and bought them unlocked from Google. The only reason I would buy directly is for a huge price savings.
Another thing I thought of too, there is an early upgrade fee with V if I were to decide to upgrade to the 5xl next year. So, that's another caveat. I'm glad I just went with unlocked. Hoping it doesn't take long to root.

This time around I placed a pre-order with Google Fi.
All their Pixels are both SIM & Bootloader Unlocked even on
financing, same as Google Store.
