Hi all,
Just flashed CM9 on my Touchpad and am wondering if I'm missing a USB driver or something. When I was on WebOS I could connect the TP to my PC and select the option to turn on Mass Storage with no issues. After flashing when I connect the TP Win 7 tries to install a driver but fails to do so.
What am I missing? I can connect my Galaxy Nexus to the PC with no issues so I'm at a loss.
in storage under advanced theres a setting to connect with usb.mine works.win 7 still said failed to install driver but it still works
Yeah go to storage, select the three dots on the right hand corner and press USB computer connection. Then select MTP. I had to switch mine between MTP and PTP a couple of times before windows 7 installed the driver properly.
Bingo. That was it.
Thanks guys!
(Isn't it odd that neither MTP or PTP is checked by default?)
Edit: Looks like I spoke too soon. When connected via PTP the computer recognizes the connection but for some reason won't let me copy/paste anything to the SD Card. When I try to connect via MTP the PC just says its a "USB composite device" so I can't access the volume. Grrrr.
Windows XP and MTP Problem
I had problems trying to connect to windows XP via the MTP interface but the driver kept failing to install.
I checked the MTP box and tried switching between MTP and PTP but with no joy.
I then switched off the USB debugging in Developer options reconnected and XP installed the driver fist time and all is working well.
Thanks for the help!!! Keep up the good work.
BAM! Worked like a charm!
I was getting a little frustrated. You guys are lifesavers.

I agree. Even if you get the USB connection to work in CM9, there is a file size limitation on transfers. I don't recall exactly what the size is but I know I had trouble with a "nightly" image I was tryubf to install. Now I either use CWM or transfer via a wireless FTP app. "WiFi File Transfer" from the Play Store.
Wifi is a little slower but you don't have to bother connecting the cable and setting everything up. Once you set up WiFi FT the first time, it just takes a couple of clicks to connect and start a file transfer.
I already turn on the MTP and trying to check/uncheck the usb debugging but still doesnt work..
I also switched to WEBOS by my win7 still cant recognize it: (..

Good job! Thanks.
So I downloaded and installed the Motorola drivers from there website... Motorola Device Manager
Unfortunately when I plug in the D3 to my computer and windows goes to install the appropriate drivers, the USB mass storage install fails. The other two, can't recall the names right now, are successful. I have tried while with and without enabling mass storage on the device
Any tricks to get it to stick? The D3 isn't showing up in windows device manager except for as a adb composition device

I've tried with and without USB debugging as well, with the phone in all of the optional modes. Several drivers install just fine except MTP USB device. Phones storage will not display nor will the memory card

you could try just installing the drivers, links in my list

I'd much prefer to have the drivers without the Motorola software.
I will give it a go when I return home and can get the gf to let me try again
Thanks for the link

I went through your links and saw that you have Motorola_end_user_something drivers version 5.4.
I tried the 64 bit variant from the zip because I have a 64bit windows 7 laptop. Installs all drivers except the mtp USB mass storage
Thanks for the link, however, I saw a video someone showed using the "latest" being version 5.5
I can't find em for the life of me, any further assistance is greatly appreciated
I can't run motofail successfully following directions to the letter and watching a video.

Hi, SD_Shadow!
I have the same problem. I have been looking everywhere on this site's forums for a solution, and I tried every single technique from your "Installing Drivers and Drivers Errors" section that you suggested. My computer (Windows Vista) will not connect with my Droid 3 (2.3.4).
When I plug in my Droid 3 with the USB, the only way anything will pop up on my cpu, is when I go into DLNA & choose "Share Media".
-Then a window will pop up stating "Found New Hardware" "Windows needs to install driver software for your Motorola Phone".
-I click on "Locate and install driver software (recommended)".
-Then it shows "Driver Software Installation" "Installing Device Driver Software" for a few seconds & another window pops up:
-"Found New Hardware- Motorola Phone" "Insert the disc that came with your Motorola Phone"
-I am forced to choose the option "I don't have the disc. Show me other options"
-Which leads me to the next window that says "Windows couldn't find the driver for your device" & offers two options to click:
-"Check for a Solution" and "Browse my computer for driver software (advanced)"
1. I have already went through both of these options and still no luck.
2. I have tried all your recommended techniques in your Sd_shadow's list of links for Droid FAQs, SBF, Rooting, ROMs.... (P.S. when I had attempted the last option in the "Installing Drivers and Drivers Errors" section with the .rar file, I extracted the file using 7zip, which I already had on my cpu)
3. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling the Motorola Device Manager (all it does is search for a new update & nothing else)
4. I have also tried rebooting my computer which has not helped this situation either
If there is anything any of you OP's can come up with for me, I'd greatly appreciate it! I tried to include as much detail as possible on here so hopefully it will make it easier to find a solution. My intentions once my phone is connected to my cpu like it should be, is to root my phone using Motofail. As you can see, I cannot accomplish the root until my cpu recognizes my device! :crying:
try
connect droid 3 to pc, open device manager (start>control panel>Hardware and sound)
find the droid 3 select uninstall and check delete the driver for this device
disconnect droid 3, then reconnect, then use the Browse my computer for driver software option
find the moto diver folder should have placed it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motorola Shared\Mobile Drivers
Still no luck!

Hello!
Thanks for getting back with me. I did exactly what you suggested, & still nothing.
After clicking "Browse my computer for driver software (advanced)"
The next window stated "Windows was unable to install your Motorola Phone"
Also, the first time, when I posted on here & said I tried both of the options:
"Check for a Solution" and "Browse my computer for driver software (advanced)"
When I chose the 2nd option, I had already chosen C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motorola Shared\Mobile Drivers but this was my result that time too. I went ahead with the process in your response, but I got the same result.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again!

When going through "Device Manager":
Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Device Manager
My device is listed as "Motorola Phone"
What seems weird to me, though, is when going through "Connect to":
Start>Connect to>View Network Computers and Devices
My device is listed as "Droid 3"
This may be irrelevant, or it may be helpful, but since I had noticed the difference, I thought I'd mention it.

I had someone that looked for this option, & they couldn't find it. The only way we could get anything to pop up on the cpu when plugging in my phone with the USB, was when I turned on "Share Media" in the DLNA.
When I just simply plug my phone into the cpu with the USB, it only charges & does not give any options otherwise. Nothing pops up on my phone or the cpu when doing this. It would've been so simple if my phone gave the options you listed!

Is Share Media" in the DLNA. still on? if so turn off

different usb data cable

I was using the USB ports in the front, so I will try the ones in the back.
If this doesn't work, I will then see if I have another USB cable, and try that.
If those don't work, I will see if I can use someone else's cpu.
Also, I'll let you know how it goes- just in case anyone ever has the same issue- since these forums have been so helpful to me with different things. Thanks again for your time!

I tried to follow the directions to the T but am still having trouble and do not know what I am doing wrong. I was so excited to finally get my hands a Nexus device and am having more trouble with this phone than any other that I have previously owned. At this point, Id be happy to keep my Note 4 is somebody could come up with a root. I wonder if it could be because I am on a computer at work that is on a network?
Domain rights
If you login to a network computer the domain user rights may have a group policy to not allow driver installation.
On my computer I right click computer and go to manage
Click on "device Manager"
My device showed up under unknown or other device it was named shamu
Right click on shamu and choose update driver software
Then choose browse my computer for driver software
Click the browse button and find the folder you downloaded from the link on the previous post and pick the usb_driver folder and click OK then click next
It should then install the driver if you have permissions on that computer to install drivers
These steps are for Windows 7
O had a similar issue. Drivers installed but the device was never seen. In device manager is was listed as like an altec or something..
I did right click, update driver, then install from computer, pick from list. From the list I just chose the USB composite device. Boom solved for me.

Hey guys, weird stuff going on here.
Downloaded the latest Android USB drivers as well as the SDK. When updating the device from the device manager, ADB drivers loaded fine, but MTP drivers and "Nexus 6" (camera mode) drivers will not install no matter what I try. USB debugging mode or not, no dice.
What I did find odd, is that when opening the android_winusb.inf file that was packaged in the latest usb drivers, there is no mention of a Nexus 6 phone inside - which explains why the drivers won't install See screenshots below.

I'm not sure if I feel comfortable "hacking" the inf file in order flash my phone, but maybe it would be ok Is this a screw up on Google's part or am I way off base here?

I'm having similar issues, laptop running win 7 can't see Nexus 6, DL'd drivers, even tried Motorola for drivers but although showing in device manager as installed no connection
At least they installed for you. The drivers don't even recognize my device. I still get a yellow Nexus 6 in device manager with no usable connection. Ugh...

Seems to be a lot of this going around. I'm on win 8.1. I couldn't get the drivers to work via the sdk. Then I tried the Google and Motorola drivers. After deleting the devices on device manager I finally got the N6 to connect via mtp. However, I can't the computer won't connect via mtp if USB debugging is on. On top of that I can't get adb to even see the phone. I would suspect it's more of a Windows problem at this point. I need to do some more testing from another pc.

This may not apply to you at all, but with the mess of Android drivers I have to install over time I've finally figure out a solution when something is not installing correctly. Did you try right clicking on the Nexus 6 (I'm assuming that has a yellow exclamation point) going to:
Update Driver Software > Browse my computer... > Let me pick from a list > Portable Devices > and find a compatible MTP driver in there
I'm saying Portable Devices specifically because that's how my Nexus 6 shows up as (as an MTP device) in the device manager.
Use the universal naked drivers. I have multiple devices and the drivers don't cooperate with each other but since I installed the naked drivers I have had any issues.

I fixed it! Wug's toolkit didn't work, although I'm about to use it to unroot, lock, and return my phone to factory state since it has to be taken back to the AT&T store to be replaced due to a screen defect. Hope they don't freak out about the death star being scratched off, lol.
Anyway, oddly enough the problem is because I'm using Windows 8.1 N, which doesn't come with Windows Media Player or any of the media features. Installing the Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8.1 sorted it out. Installed, rebooted, done. I can now access the device in any mode and the device driver errors are gone.
So if anyone is having the same issue with Windows 8.1 N, download and install this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42503
Reboot and enjoy!
thanks

Ran into the same issue initially when I was trying to root my Nexus 6. Wug's didn't work, and neither did the naked universal drivers. Added the Nexus 6 ID to the inf and still didn't work.
Had to install the Motorola driver kit, and then go through the drivers as above to find a Motorola that finally worked; while the Motorola driver is just a wrapper for some Microsoft driver that normally comes built into Windows since Windows 7.
Nexus 6 Driver (ADB, Fastboot and MTP) for Windows and MAC
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/nexus-6-driver-adb-fastboot-mtp-windows-mac-68355/
I discovered the following troubleshooting tip listed below (amongst others) at the website above. It worked flawlessly with my brand new unlocked stock Motorola NEXUS-6 (XT-1103) and Windows-7 PC. Thank you and big props to the developer(s) who posted it!
1.Connect your Nexus 6 to computer with a USB cable and open Device manager on your computer.
2.Look for ‘Android Composite ADB Interface‘ entry, right-click and select uninstall from the context menu.
3.In the uninstall pop-up that appears, tick ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ checkbox and press the “Ok” button.
4.Disconnect your phone from your computer.
5.Disable USB debugging on your Nexus 6 from Settings » Developer options » un-tick ‘USB debugging’ checkbox.
6.Put your Nexus 6 in MTP mode (It should be in MTP by default unless you selected the Camera (PTP) mode).
7.Connect your Nexus 6 to the computer again, and let the computer re-install drivers automatically. If it doesn’t re-installs driver, try toggling the ‘USB debugging’ option on your device.
Same here. Nexus 6 stock lollipop 5.1.1 with unlocked bootloader. I thought it was my personel windows 7 pc. But no its any pc I try to connect to. Found that out because I work at a big business full of windows pc's. I remember at one point not having this problem at all. Don't know if it was before one of the lollipop updates but I remember I used to connect my phone at work on any pc the pc would automatically open MTP asking me what I wanted to do. That was without adb turned on. I've tried everything searched everywhere, installed, uninstalled drivers from Google, Motorola etc. Even tried wugfresh's instructions. My pc does not recognize my phone at all. Mtp, Adb, Fastboot, nothing. Weird thing is I also have a nexus 5 and as soon as I connect it its recognized. Don't know if it maybe the cable that's the only thing I haven't tried since my cables are not Motorola cables, or nexus 6 original cable as that is the way I bought it. But it used to connect. Now I'm stuck, at a loss. Don't get it, called Motorola, Google, T-Mobile. I think they know nothing about phones as when I tell them the problem they look at me like I'm talking Chinese. If anyone knows what the problem is and have been able to fix it please hit me up @ [email protected] Just about to give up. I just don't understand what the problem maybe. Running stock lollipop 5.1.1 with unlocked bootloader never rooted. Thanks and hope someone can help.
I had the same issue. I installed the latest google drivers from the Android SDK and my computer would not recognize my Nexus 6. I couldn't use fastboot or anything. I was able to fix this though. With my Nexus 6 hooked up to my computer, I opened device manager. There was the "unknown device" which was my Nexus 6 obviously. I right clicked on it and attempted to install the driver, the automatic driver installation method could not find it. I had to point it directly to the file. The file is located in the android-sdk files. I had to point it to c:/android-sdk/extras/google Obviously location will vary depending on where you installed the android-sdk. Just make sure to only point it to extras/google. I wen't further in the first attempt and it didn't work. I hope this helps. I suck at explaing stuff.

This didn't work the first or second time. I did steps 2 through 7 3 times and then it worked. I must have had a lot of drivers installed.
So if it doesn't work the first time, keep uninstalling the drivers and try again and again. Worse case scenario, you have to install the drivers again. hope this helps.
I want to add my own tale to his thread with the hope that it will help someone. I could not see the Nexus 6 when I set MTP mode or MIDI mode. The phone showed up on the PC when I selected PTP (camera) mode. In my case, I had four external USB3 hard drives connected. I finally turned off the hard drives and then MTP mode would be visible, both as a Portable Device, named Nexus 6, in the Device Manger, and as the same under My Computer in Windows Explorer. After Imy PC recognized the Phone in MT mode, I tuned on the external drives and all were visible.
I have two Nexus 6s, one completely stock and one that I just upgraded to Marshmallow. I downloaded sdk and minimal adb and fastboot today in order to install marshmallow. I just plugged in my completely stock unmodified Nexus 6 into my computer to get my photos off my stock Nexus before I send it back to amazon and although the phone charges, nothing pops up for it being a storage device, I switched it between MTP and PTP on the phone but it does nothing, the phone does not show up, same goes for the Nexus 6 that has marshmallow on it, also switched that to MTP. My computer detects the phone because it allows me to eject it from usb but that is about it. Anything else I can try? trying to get pics off the old Nexus before I send it back.

btw adb sees the phone no problem
I have the same problem. Windows seems to recognize the phone, but it displays no content when I try to browse files.
Just did a clean flash of the factory image.
EDIT:
Ok, I'm an idiot... here's the solution:

nope that does nothing on my phone, both are set correctly at MTP or PTP, nothing works
BTW when I eject the USB it lists it as "android adb interface" I have a feeling that is why it is not showing up?
Mine just says MTP when I eject it. Did you try toggling USB debugging on and off?

I deleted the adb driver and that fixed the issue but that can't be the correct way because I think it would be pointless to have to install and delete the adb driver each time I want to use it? I knew it was more computer related than phone related but what is the correct way to make the phone work with a adb driver installed on the computer?

I honestly don't know. I've always had mixed results. Sometimes it would work automatically, sometimes I'd have to manually install the google drivers when the phone is in the bootloader.
Had the same "problem", to fix it and for windows to show the contents of the phone, you just need to pull down the top drawer and select mtp file transfer from the USB options. It is set for " charge only" as default. Try it out!

Pull down the status bar and set charge only to transfer files

Exactly: it is not a problem, but just a new way to manage USB connections. You just have to pull down the status bar and choose one of the USB options for your Nexus 6
lol you guys aren't understanding, I did that and it did not fix the issue. The phone was still not recognized as a storage device. I also tried a Nexus 6 that was on 5.1.1 which does not have the charging only option in the drawer and it also was not recognized but once I deleted the adb driver from my computer, my computer saw both as storage devices when I put them into MTP mode
Go into developer settings
Make sure checked Debugging on
Then Scroll down
Look for MTP CHange it to something else in the settings
then back MTP Your computer will then see it it bug in 6.0
