Nexus 6 Display - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. My Nexus 6 got delivered today and all seemed well.
That was until I visited digitalspy.co.uk 's mobile website.
There is a white line that runs down the screen. Well, this is the problem - I don't know if it's the phone's display or the website. The line doesn't show on any other device I browse the site on. It's only happened on that site and one other so far.
I have attached an image.
Could anyone help me find out what is wrong? D:

Same here. Don't have it on anything else, so would assume its the website. Must be an issue with Android's version of Chrome.

You guys may want to keep an eye on it, and also check this thread out...the line seems very similar. The one in that thread doesn't look like it's an issue with software or Chrome, but it looks almost the same as the one here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/nexus-6-display-3-days-t2963786

I can confirm this happens on this website, and no other sites that i have visited on my N6. See the attached screenshot. If there was an issue with the display, a screenshot wouldnt be able to show it, only a photograph of the display would.

This! The screenshot takes a snapshot of what the software is pushing. Not what is physically being displayed. If your screen was shattered. A screenshot would still come out perfect. If the software is showing a line that means its the site. If that makes any sense...

Good point, the other thread is an actual photo of the phone though, like the OPs picture (though I know his of this particular website now)

Yes that one looks like a hardware defect since it persists throughout everything. You are fine

Where do you get a Tegra 3 game that will push the cores since that seems to be a factor?

Eh the Galaxy Nexus had THIS EXACT problem when it first came out. Software update fixed it.
I'm not worried.
I would suggest not testing if you don't notice anything. So many people discover issues they wouldn't have cared about otherwise because of threads like this. The screen separation issue is one. How many people wouldn't have even noticed? I wouldn't have, especially once I got my Nexus in a case.
So far I have no issues at all with my tablet. Have been using it since yesterday and working perfect. But I hate chrome browser even though it's better then it was on the a500.maybe I just need to get used to it. Also I get lagg in resizing text auto.
We have been discussing this issue here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789450 the multitouch test shows the bug even if you didn't play, you only need to put the tablet on the desk and it will happen ;(

Nexus 7 Shipped with Test ROM

Short Story:
----------------
Yesterday I bought Google Nexus from my local MacMall (Chicago), and I was pretty stoked. The first thing I noticed upon opening it was that the box had been re-sealed. Then I tried to turn it on and the battery was dead. I thought that was kind of unusual, but not unheard of. Then I charged it and turned it on...
Below are pictures describing what I saw. I am going to exchange the device this afternoon. I was wondering if anyone has ever seen something like this and would anyone be interested in playing around with this ROM. I would imagine it is a proprietary ASUS build, but they sold it to me so it's mine now. I would be happy to post a link to the ROM, but I don't know how to extract it. (I'm sure there is a post explaining that, please direct me to it).
Here are links to the pictures:

Fixed the links for you.
sweet, hopefully there is something useful
Do NOT return this! This is a very good find! Maybe if you could unlock the bootloader and make a Nandroid backup in CWM...
Perhaps stick it on ebay as a Buy It Now for the price it would cost you to order another one...
That way if it is truly interesting to someone, they have to opportunity of putting up (or shutting up).
No do not unlock it yet, it will erase everything. Do a system image dump. There is a toolkit in the developers section. Post it in there.
Also i noticed its running ICS
Don't send it back yet, let the devs get what they need

Lol.
The devs don't need anything from this unless you actually want to DOWNGRADE your device.
We can build AOSP from source, we don't need this build for anything at all.
Just put it on eBay :good:

I thought someone here might want this, but I have to return it today (it is for my wife). I'm "good with puters" so I can follow instructions well, but I've never rooted or jailbroken anything in my life. I'm at work so I don't have lots of time to search forums for the proper instructions. If someone really wants this, you have about two hours to post instructions for me to backup or image or whatever it is called a copy of this ROM before I return it. I'll check back every five.
I am downloading the Root Toolkit now

ICS on it. How strange. Makes you wonder if they were intending to launch with that on it instead of JB.
Does it have any screen raise issues or faults?

I'm not really sure what you mean by "raise issues or faults". It's hard to show, but when I drag my finger accross the screen, it draws a line with many dots and H and V coordinate lines. That was a horrible description. Basically, it looks like it is mapping the touchscreen feedback and then rendering a line. The line quickly disappears. The white and red boxes at the top of the screen acually have numbers written on them and those numbers change as you touch the screen. There is also like a red Frame the flashes on the screen when I select an app. I will try to post some some pictures/maybe a video. My phone sucks though so the quality wont be that good.

What you're describing is the 'Show touches' and 'Pointer Location' options that can be enabled in Settings>Developer options on Jelly Bean.

It appears to have test apps not included in AOSP.
You should try to cold boot to recovery from the bootloader and see if it'll go without being hooked up to a computer. Maybe the bootloader is different than production.
Can't he try flashing the stock rom over this? If there are no hardware faults, why risk getting one that might be defective?
What would devs need from this ... This isn't a Samsung / HTC device

Please do a nandroid. Tests have shown ICS has better raw performance than JB. I would love to see an ICS ROM on these at least to just test it out.

Still interesting. Whats the build number on that phone? Sounds like you have one that either missed getting updated before being shipped, or an old one from the back of the store room. Who knows, might have the code for "Always listening" Google now hiding under all the bugs?

its all up there in that one screen shot i put in build number and everything.
I emailed the seller waiting to either return it or just update it myself.
Well, I came into this thread expecting completely different results.
OP, do a system dump and upload it. Maybe there are some goodies on there that we can use. It seems you've got your hands on a test/debug build of Android. Does the phone hardware look like it should? "nexus" printed on the back, area where the IMEI sticker should be, etc.?

yup its legit sticker on the screen IMEI sticker on the back i switch it on and the boot animation was from the first build of ICS only it was cropped in the middle of the screen then to my surprise i'm running Keylime pie. Ive never done a system dump before i'm on this other thread now figuring out how to flash stock kit kat. It's frustrating. You're like "this is not what i paid for" you know?

Maybe don't buy a brand-new device second-hand.
That's always a bad sign. Either the device had issues and they're too lazy to return it or it's fake...possibly they don't like it but there's probably reasoning behind that to merit immediately selling a $400 phone a week max after receiving it.

Interesting. Under "Model Number" it also says "AOSP on Hammerhead". Also why would it say "KeyLimePie" instead of an actual number like "4.4" under Android Version. Something odd is going on here.

Hold up on that. At least do a system dump first.
If you don't know how use this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380797
If you don't have the android SDK go here and download the platform tools attached in the 8th comment and open command line there then follow that guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33510112
Also you need to enable android debugging.

Going to also say "Do a system dump" simply because A) You seem to be one of the very "lucky" few to have an older device and B) Who knows what kind of things are hiding in that system image.
I mean, its your phone and you paid for it so I don't blame you for wanting to just flash KitKat onto it. However, that system image could benefit the development community somehow. Either way, this is really interesting.
Looks like a test build for sure - if you google sangjoon84.lee you'll find that kernel build referenced in all the FCC info and prior N5 leaks.
Don´t update it for Pete´s sake, that might be a treasure! "Early Development device" ...in 10 years that´s gonna be worth something on ebay!

I just checked that aswell. It's weird though because other mentions of it have KyeLimePie whereas this screenshot shows it spelt correctly.

This isn't the first time a non shipping build came with a nexus phone.
In fact, all of our N5's shipped with key lime pie. It just forced an update at setup.
The reason why this didn't update is its not in an OTA path. Its a test build.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
OP if you are willing to dump the system image for us here are some easy steps on doing that.
Download the Android tools here
All you have to do is dump the contents of the zip onto your C: directory. Enable USB debugging on your phone and plug it in via USB. Then open CMD prompt and type:
CD C:\
You should then see
C:\
Now just type:
adb.exe pull /system/
This will dump the image which you can then zip and share later if you wanted. I would advise doing a dump seeing as how this is extremely rare. Again though, its your call.
Is it already unlocked? Would be wild if this was just some Google employee's test device for a couple weeks or simmering!

Yup, my device as I am sure everyone else's here aksed for an immediate update once it booted up so who knows what was there before.

Screen Issue... need a favor

I have always thought I have seen a bit of artifacting on this display, but I am not sure a new phone will fix it. Moto, of course, wants to send a new phone.
Would some of you please download the png at http://soletc.com/stuff/yuk.png and look at it on your Moto X. Do you see a smeared area between the icon on the far right and the one in the same row on the left? Something similar to this...

I have these. Most visible at low brightness and yellowish-white backgrounds.
I don't see them, neither at low or high bright, zoom in or zoom out.
Yes, the smeared area is visible on my Moto as well. I downloaded the png and that zone is clearly visible, for my eyes at least.

There's very little point in exchanging your phone over this. It's an odd software issue present on the 2 previous X's I've had and will probably be present on the third when it arrives sometime this week. If you look closely into the line you can probably make out the image of the android soft keys in it. When I first got the phone I thought it was odd burn in but if you rotate the phone the back button rotates too so it seems to be a software issue, possibly with the screen driver. I find the best way to see it is to open something with a white background that's not too busy like settings and dial the brightness down. If you look close enough you'll see it. Just seems Moto is using fairly iffy panels in a number of the phones. Of course this may be a different issue altogether but normally when I see weird lines across my screen that's what it is
Here's a video showing the issue in the new Photos app...

I see it, it's like a band crossing the entire display. Maybe you need to contact Motorola for a replace because my moto doesn't have this and is like 8 months old.

Correctly working YouTube? Anyone?

This is more of a rant than anything. Does anyone have a good working YouTube app? I just noticed recently that the app will not play newly selected videos right away, it just plays the beginning of the Queue everytime you select a new video. Also if you stream to a chromecast, if you let the phone or tablet screen go off and then turn the device back on it will stop the video. I have 4 devices and three don't work right. The only one that works correctly is the Ascend mate 2. Huh? My damn Chinese device is the only one getting it right. Can't wait for the Huawei Nexus!

Probably a problem at your end, this is the first post afaik regarding this issue. Clear the data of the YT app or deinstall and reinstall the app if the first option doesn`t work.
Seems weird that 3 out of 4 fail and 1 of that failed 3 is stock on an asus tablet.

And no need to bring race into a subject when you are sore. Especially when the Nexus 6 is a "chinese" phone also. Research on Lenovo, and look at the shipping threads here on XDA to see where Morotola shipped from directly from the plant.

Really? Everybody seems to hate the idea that one of the next nexus devices might be Huawei. Is it not Chinese made, making my statement true? I did not put it in quotes like you hence making it 'racist.' My post was not being racial in anyway. Stop being so sensitive. Wow....
I like the idea that it might be Huawei.....they got some good looking devices.
