Should work
Remove the protector, problem solved.
It blocked the sensor.
Actually, just had to restart the phone. Now everything works perfectly.
I have the same problem (and no screen protector) and I found a way to reproduce the issue:
- If I turn off the screen on the homescreen and a call is received, the screen turns on.
- If I turn off the screen while an app like chrome is opened and a call is received, the screen stays off.
Can you guys reproduce this? Maybe this helps to find a solution

. . . and I have to hit the power button to turn the screen back on. To be more precise, the screen turns itself off when I hold the phone towards my ear during calls, and it does not turn itself back on when I hold it away from my ear.
This is obviously some power saving feature that doesn't work as well as it should, like a gimpy proximity sensor. Anyone know a workaround for this ?
I'm on Three Musketeers Sense 3.6 ROM.

Well, ther is a proximity sensor there, near the camera on the top of the phone, on the screen side, and this screen-off thing is more like feature to save power and not to anoy you during the night when you talk to the phone
Don't know why it does that, maybe your sensor is faulty, but try to flash a different ROM and see if something changes, also make sure you don't keep your hand or finger near that sensor, just to be sure, i personally use this ROM and i don't expierience this issue.
Hope this helps

If it is possible on Galaxy S2, then it is possible on any android phone , and it is, but there should be made a tool for that or a flashable zip, i'm not that experienced to tell you exactly what needs to be changed, but it can be done, that i know
Same problem here.
Changing roms didn't solve anything
Anybody have solution for this ?
If you have a screen protector covering it then it might be wise to make a cut out or take the protector off altogether.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
as i remeber , you can write something in the build.prop that will disable proxy sensor
Im having problem that is almost same. After a long call(when screen is turned off) it turns off but screen or softkeys dont reply any way.
I have to turn of the screen with power button and let it be around 10-15 seconds and turn it on. Then lockscreen appears and everything
works. This is really annoying because I cant cut the line any way.
Not using screen protector and tried couple of custom roms. Allways have the same issue.

No I don't have screen protector or cover.
Problem is identified with proximity sensor itself, on App " Android sensor box " if you select proximity sensor it reads always 0.0cm no mater what you do with phone.
It seems like HW failure, will have to look at it in more detail.

I have tryed few Apps that will lock/disable proximity sensor but without success. It either acts the same or don't light the screen at all.

The problem is when you try to make a second call display turns off, phone is working you can talk, but you can't end the call or nothing because screen is off, so you have to turn it on or wake it by pressing power button. And it's happening only on every second call, so I make a first call, as soon as I try to make a second display turns off, and only power button wakes it, after that you can make the next call normaly, but problem repeats on second call.
Phone was stock on ICS 4.0.3, and making problems there. So it's now fully unlocked ( S-off ) Hboot is 1.28. I have tryed many custom roms, but the problem repeats
I think it's the hardware problem with proximity sensor.

I think too. Sounds like your proximity sensor is weird.

To continue the story, I removed the MB and when the proximity sensor is out of the case, it works ok. When I put it back in case( behind screen ) it doesn't respond again.
Cleaning didn't help, will have to find another one to make sure what is the problem.
I have fixed my problem thanks to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2022865
Yesterday I made a call on the XZ and whilst I had the phone against my ear the screen switched off - this I fully expected - what I did not expect was that at some point during the call I had to press a number to get through and when I went to press the number the screen refused to switch on!! Obviously I could not press the necessary number or indeed end the call. It took me almost ten minutes of hearing the automated message trying to reset the phone (I pressed all the button combinations I knew of and even invented a few myself just in case...) without any luck! I had an idea and removed the SIM from the phone, the bl%%dy automated message still continued, I then inserted the SIM and the screen went on and the phone finally rebooted without me pressing any keys!
I had noticed before this, that the screen did remain off after my calls, but as the other person usually hung up I never really took much issue with this behaviour.
Has anybody had this problem before? My phone is rooted, with the 434 stock firmware and locked bootloader.
Do not have this issue on .434. Didn't have it on .350.
Did you install a screen protector because some of them can mess with the light sensor
Press thanks if I helped
Same issue here...very annoying!

Screen protector. Issue comes up a lot. Screen protector.
I had the same issue, I even tried to test the proximity sensor via service menu: it turned on when I got my hand near the phone, but it wouldn't turn off. I removed the screen protector, now it works just fine.
After a while I suddenly got a similar issue where my screen would not turn on when calls came in.
In the beginning i could push vol+ or powerbutton and it would turn on.
Then nothing worked. Call came in and I had to wait for the call to end before the screen could be turned on.
Tinkered around with apps to find the culprit, aaand zilch.
this was on .350
After updating to .434 (global), everything was back to normal
-C6603
-Unlocked bl and root
-No screenprotector, or anti-shatter film for that matter
I have the Z3 compact and recently found when receiving calls my screen stays blank and does not display anything, notifcation led flashes and vibrates, as I cannot see who is calling I find I am having to press the power button to cut them off to see who it is in the notification bar to call back.
Any help would be great as been through settings, restarted, sim out, etc and still no change!?!

Select the "All" tab
Scroll down and turn on the InCallUI thingy that has the phone icon next to it

worked pretty well on my Samsung S4.
download the app "proximity fix" from the playstore and run it.
Job done.
Hope that helps you or anyone who stumbles upon this!

My Z3 compact got black screen when calling and I tried all the above solutions with booting and repair of software. But the problem was due to loose screen. The glue did not hold the screen any longer. After regluing the screen, the problem was fixed:good:
I know why this happened - the display has started to peel off from top left corner - alignment of proximity sensor is messed during calls. The glue must have melted due to the phone heating up and the display must have lifted up a little.
To check if I'm right...press the screen ( top left - with your nail maybe) while making the call and the display will stay on. Please thank me of useful

how did you re-glue back the screen.

honestly shame on sony. Such a big company that the ****ing glue is peeling off. Not even a chinese phone will do that. It's causing problems with my proximity sensor and even when i press the screen it still wont work and it only works rarely.
very frustrating problem.
My phone goes black after I dial a call. Ran tests and all sensors are not working. What do I do now?
My N6 started doing this today. As soon as I place or receive a call the screen turns off and won't turn on until the call is ended. Someone suggested it's a problem with double tap to wake and someone made a fix for it. Where is it?
I have unencrypted. Running Chroma with Xposed and double tap to wake. Wasn't doing it yesterday.
Thought it might be Xposed since I shut the phone off and forgot to do a soft boot. I did it now and it's still acting up.

9 out of 10 times Xposed is the problem. Xposed and customs roms/apps don't play well together. Xposed is for those that run stock so modded code doesn't conflict. Run a logcat and will probable see a lot of Xposed errors.

Then first thing I would do is uninstall xposed. It still has the framework hooked. With all the mods in Croma Xposed gonna be a big headache anyway. Uninstall it. Then go to recovery and wipe dalvik and cache and reboot.

I had this same thing when I installed test version of call recorder without wiping after uninstalling the the original call recorder.
I had this same problem when I had my glass screen protector installed. It was lifted right over the proximity sensor. Causing this same effect.
Problem is fixed now. Repositioned my glass protector further away from. The light sensor. It must've been creating a shadow over the sensor because it was haloing

Yeah, tempered glasses without the cutout for proximity sensor causes such problems. Why don't you get a rhinoshield? It's much better protective than tempered glasses
I've tried several screen protectors. I'll only get glass ones from now on =)
where exactly are the sensors located at? i can't see them... near the front camera or? thanks.
Only had this issue after the 5.1 OTA
I got my 5.1 OTA today and only then did i experience this same issue too.
As soon as I dial out or pick up an incoming, screen goes blank.
No way to get back until other party hangs up. Had to go to accessibility settings to turn on "power button ends call".
I am using a glass screen protector. I tried peeling off the part covering the proximity sensor and making a call. However, the issue still persists.
Might be a 5.1 bug...

I had the same problem when doing the 5.1 update on my N6 and the only way I could get the light sensor and proximity sensor to work again was by reverting back to the 5.0.1 version that was on the phone originally and was good to go again! I am at least glad I am not the only one seeing this. Report to Google as I did otherwise a fix will never be looked for!

I am having the same issue. Since 5.1 screen goes black during calls and I have to reboot to end call. Set "power button ends call" but that is a pain. The screen protector is a red herring, this is a 5.1 issue. Don't like that I have to do a little dance and plug headphones in to get my $700 phone to make phone calls.

From google: Hi everyone, I've got an update to share on this issue. Our software engineers have identified a change in the Nexus 6's code for the proximity sensor (the sensor that lets the phone know when it's next to your cheek) and are working on tweaking it. The change will be available in an upcoming over-the-air update to the Nexus 6. Note, however, that this will be for a later update -- we're in the middle of sending out Android 5.1 right now; this fix will be for a later version.
Edited to add: Please remember that there is a workaround for this issue -- if you have a screen protector or case on your Nexus 6, it might be blocking the sensor. Try removing your screen protector or case to get your screen to light up again.

It's not a red herring. I and other users have confirmed that a screen protector on or near the light sensor is the issue.
I've had this problem with 2 different roms now (PureNexus, Chroma) on a few kernels (stock, ElementalX) so I'm not sure whats causing it but I need a fix. In a call, many times the screen just stops responding. Sometimes I can turn the screen on/off using power button and its fixed. Other times nothing works and I have to do a hard reboot by holding down power key since nothing else works on screen.
This is on latest version of the rom/kernels. Any ideas?
When you say its stops responding, do you mean it goes dark and nothing displays on screen? Or that its on with everything displaying but tapping it does nothing?
Only when in contact with ears?

Its on, touch doesn't do anything. The phone is working since volume keys bring up the UI but you can't do anything. Also proximity sensor works, it turns on/off as I bring near ear. I don't have a screen protector.

I'm having a similar issue from the last month.. I'm on DP5
when i get a call most times the screen is off.
To answer the call i've to put on the screen, unlock the phone and then go to the heads up notification and choose answer there..
waiting for nougat final hoping it'll fix this.
Tried fiddling around with notifications importance setting.. it helped a little but then there was the annoying heads up showing along with the regular incoming call screen.
Sometimes (very rarely, has happened twice) the screen just remains black and will only work normally after a reboot.
Anybody have any suggestions?
I was having similar issues, also on the Developer Preview and I ended up noticing that the phone app was blocked from showing any notifications despite the fact that I never set it that way. I would hear the call ringing but would never see the screen to answer. Just changed that setting and everything was back to normal. Perhaps something is causing the phone app to fail to show notifications for you as well.
