My N6 started doing this today. As soon as I place or receive a call the screen turns off and won't turn on until the call is ended. Someone suggested it's a problem with double tap to wake and someone made a fix for it. Where is it?
I have unencrypted. Running Chroma with Xposed and double tap to wake. Wasn't doing it yesterday.
Thought it might be Xposed since I shut the phone off and forgot to do a soft boot. I did it now and it's still acting up.

9 out of 10 times Xposed is the problem. Xposed and customs roms/apps don't play well together. Xposed is for those that run stock so modded code doesn't conflict. Run a logcat and will probable see a lot of Xposed errors.

Then first thing I would do is uninstall xposed. It still has the framework hooked. With all the mods in Croma Xposed gonna be a big headache anyway. Uninstall it. Then go to recovery and wipe dalvik and cache and reboot.

I had this same thing when I installed test version of call recorder without wiping after uninstalling the the original call recorder.
I had this same problem when I had my glass screen protector installed. It was lifted right over the proximity sensor. Causing this same effect.
Problem is fixed now. Repositioned my glass protector further away from. The light sensor. It must've been creating a shadow over the sensor because it was haloing

Yeah, tempered glasses without the cutout for proximity sensor causes such problems. Why don't you get a rhinoshield? It's much better protective than tempered glasses
I've tried several screen protectors. I'll only get glass ones from now on =)
where exactly are the sensors located at? i can't see them... near the front camera or? thanks.
Only had this issue after the 5.1 OTA
I got my 5.1 OTA today and only then did i experience this same issue too.
As soon as I dial out or pick up an incoming, screen goes blank.
No way to get back until other party hangs up. Had to go to accessibility settings to turn on "power button ends call".
I am using a glass screen protector. I tried peeling off the part covering the proximity sensor and making a call. However, the issue still persists.
Might be a 5.1 bug...

I had the same problem when doing the 5.1 update on my N6 and the only way I could get the light sensor and proximity sensor to work again was by reverting back to the 5.0.1 version that was on the phone originally and was good to go again! I am at least glad I am not the only one seeing this. Report to Google as I did otherwise a fix will never be looked for!

I am having the same issue. Since 5.1 screen goes black during calls and I have to reboot to end call. Set "power button ends call" but that is a pain. The screen protector is a red herring, this is a 5.1 issue. Don't like that I have to do a little dance and plug headphones in to get my $700 phone to make phone calls.

From google: Hi everyone, I've got an update to share on this issue. Our software engineers have identified a change in the Nexus 6's code for the proximity sensor (the sensor that lets the phone know when it's next to your cheek) and are working on tweaking it. The change will be available in an upcoming over-the-air update to the Nexus 6. Note, however, that this will be for a later update -- we're in the middle of sending out Android 5.1 right now; this fix will be for a later version.
Edited to add: Please remember that there is a workaround for this issue -- if you have a screen protector or case on your Nexus 6, it might be blocking the sensor. Try removing your screen protector or case to get your screen to light up again.

It's not a red herring. I and other users have confirmed that a screen protector on or near the light sensor is the issue.

I recently replaced my screen and ever since the screen would go black during calls,
I figured that the sensor has
2 parts, sender and reciever
If the receiver can see the emitting light from the sender then there's usually something for the sender to bounce off, when the screen was replaced there's something different, there's nothing inbetween the sender and the reciever! So the screen is reflecting the sender back to the receiver,
Step 1 disassemble
Step 2 remove LCD board,
Step 3 detatch proximity sensor from board
Step 4 cut small line of plastic from New screen inside the viewport ( where the sensor can see through) it should be touching the glass separating the 2 sensors but its not, hence why the sensor activates thinking something is infront of it but its reflecting throug past the piece of plastic.
Cut it out carefully with a razor.
Step5. Use double sided foam or anything else that would work to block and sit inbetween the 2 parts of the sensor and the screen, I used double sided foam and stuck it to the proximity sensor rubber,2 layers.
Aslong as you seperate the 2 sensors completely it should now work again.
I will be adding pics soon
Thank you very much
It helped me to fix my problem.
Thanks. Just repaired proximity sensor using your advice!

Here is the solution for your request. I have requested the developer to include the option in his app for our jelly bean ROMs. I have noticed every Jelly Bean ROM has the same issue. So you download this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=novum.inceptum.proximity&hl=ru go to Smart Screen On/Off then activate it and tick Only during call option and it will solve the problem.

Sorry this is the right app it is called Proximity Actions from Google Play (the developer developed for us by my request to solve the problem with black screen during call in our ROMs). I have corrected url above as well.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=novum.inceptum.proximity&hl=ru Go to the app first of all put mark on Start/Stop Service in order the app to work. Then under section called Actions there is the last section called Start Screen On/Off. When you open "Smart Screen On/Off" activate it with marking it. Then you go to the last section called "Only during call" activate only during phone call. And push the button "thank you" for me in here. Also go Play store and thank the developer as well. He solved our issue.

I was on stock rom before the replacement. But rooted and s off. Then aftr the replacement i tried many other ics rom. Xl 3.6, and so on..those roms were ok.but ddnt fixed my proximity sensor and my touch screen freezes time to time. Last rom i was on is king cobra rom.it was really buggy. Couldnt even connect to the pc. Then i flashed linora..it is a pretty good rom. Can live with it and pretry fast than sense ui roms. most importantly fixed my proximity sensor 100%. But still my touchscreen freezes sometomes. I have to lock and unlock the screen to bypass that. That's my next headache.

ok. i am not having screen freezes though. i have checked out linaro, seems there are some bugs like the wired set unable to use as hands free kit and screen goes blank when receiving calls are a handicap to me. so i will stick with the ics stock deodexed rom. i will disassemble it when i find some time to see what is wrong with the proximity sensor set up, although i am doing it blindly since i can only get a vague description from this post.
your screen freeze is quite serious, you should get it checked by the same guy who did your lcd replacement.

maybe you can try downloading "android sensor box" or any sensor testing apps and check. mine is totally not working, no fingers or palm getting close to it already shows 0.0cm (means it's blocked or hardware problem).

Most of the time with proximity sensor not functioning is because some Screen Protector is blocking it.
Make sure your custom screen protector isn't blocking it first, then if it still doesn't work properly maybe it's a hardware failure, should contact SONY then....
If it's the sensor or the screen protector (which has cut outs for the sensor), then why does it turn off the screen correctly the moment it put the phone to my ear?
It was the screen protector. Strange, other people don't have any issues with it.
So sorry Sony, your are great

My Z3 compact got black screen when calling and I tried all the above solutions with booting and repair of software. But the problem was due to loose screen. The glue did not hold the screen any longer. After regluing the screen, the problem was fixed:good:
I know why this happened - the display has started to peel off from top left corner - alignment of proximity sensor is messed during calls. The glue must have melted due to the phone heating up and the display must have lifted up a little.
To check if I'm right...press the screen ( top left - with your nail maybe) while making the call and the display will stay on. Please thank me of useful

honestly shame on sony. Such a big company that the ****ing glue is peeling off. Not even a chinese phone will do that. It's causing problems with my proximity sensor and even when i press the screen it still wont work and it only works rarely.
very frustrating problem.
My phone goes black after I dial a call. Ran tests and all sensors are not working. What do I do now?
Anyone notice their proximity sensor is very flaky?
The screen will not shut off when I close my wallet cover over it. It will shut off when I start talking on the phone, but then will not "wake" when I move it away to hang up. I actually couldnt find anyway to wake it up so i just waited until the other side hung up (it was a recorded msg).
Any ideas? I may just shut off the proximity sensor and wait till I can swap it in store. Of course this was right after i installed a tempered glass screen .... would that impact it at all??thx!

My tempered glass has a cutout for the 2 sensors on the left, are there any sensors on the right of the speaker? My proximity sensor also is not working. I will probably return my tempered glass also if this is the case...
This is happening to me and I don't have a screen protector. It's really getting annoying.
I'm having issues as well.... Not using any screen protector or whatsoever...
Yeh same here.. Looks like the sensor is maybe too sensitive. Hope sw can fix this.
+1 for the issue.

I just restored a backup of the original rom and the problem went away. So it's probably an issue with cm. Was on cm nightly from 01-13-2014
Did you try going to settings , accessibility , power button ends call, toggle that on and off.
After completing the above mentioned step. Reboot your phone and try making a call. I hope the issue get resolved.
I tried this step on an unrooted phone, which was recieved just yesterday.
I got this fix from some other thread.
Is there a way to turn off proximity sensor without rooting? Looked through setting and must have missed it. Thanks in advance.
Still having this issue as well. I tried toggling the power button option then restarting my phone, it seems to help for a very short period of time (few hours maybe). I have tried several different screen protectors, the most recent ones having a cut out for the sensor and there is a decent gap between the two. Reloaded my phone several times and installed 5.0.1
The sensor doesn't really work to turn on the display when I go to pickup the phone and is spotty when making a call. In the first minute or so of the call, I can take the phone away from my head and it will register, illuminating the screen, after that it stops working.
I can't understand how it could be the screen protector at this point, it's no where close to obstructing the sensor.
Guess it's time to send this thing back. I must be nuts because I keep trying this power button suggestion and it just doesn't work for me longer than a few hours.
Same here, using a plastic rinkage screen protector no bubbles in it and the edge falls a good few MM from the sensor.
CM12 nightly builds still do it I'm on the 2/19th build with Franco kernel.
Best solution is get rid of the junk and get a Note 4. Mine is such a crap phone. It doesn't even do anything special except be big.
Hi,
Just to tell that I've got this pb since I installed the Spigen crystal protection, not even a tempered glass.
Before that I still had the original cheap film you get when you unbox, with the white corner.. the crystal is really nicer but it screws the sensor...
I believe it is software related. I have a tempered glass screen protector that does not cover the proximity sensor. I have noticed that about 60% of the time the screen does not turn back on when I move the phone away from my head. It seems to happen more when the phone call is longer than one minute. I also had a tempered glass protector that covered the sensor and had the same behavior. I did use an app to test the proximity sensor and with both screen protectors it worked 100% of the time using the app.

I've noticed that a lot of times when i make calls, the screen won't shut off when i put the phone to my head... often with that resulting in my cheek touching something, and the person on the other end not being able to hear me. If i leave the phone at an angle against my ear so my cheek doesn't touch the screen, eventually the screen will shut off, but won't come on when i take the phone away from my ear, resulting in me having to press the power button to turn the screen back on.
Had that happen to me yesterday ... Rebooted and it hasn't happened today.

I'm having a issue now. Phone call comes in and screen stays on. I did a reboot, factory reset even installed custom ROM. It was working the other day. Anyway to calibrate this thing? Or do we have a bad sensor.
Also now my phone won't rotate screen.

Do any of you happen to have a screen protector on? As there have been some users that have been reporting issues with certain screen protectors. I believe most are tempered glass protectors that are the cause of the problems.
I took mine off and still nothing.

Did you try going to settings , accessibility , power button ends call, toggle that on and off.
We own two new Nexus 6 devices that are rooted and decrypted. We have the same issue where the phone screen stays on during a call. Rebooting fixes for a short period (hours or so) but the problem comes back. Other threads show this to be an issue with other phones (nexus 5) with Lollipop. Not sure of a fix. These devices are only a few weeks old so it is not a dust issue.
Having the same issue that just suddenly started. Rebooting does not seem to help.
Happening here too. Frustrating.
My screen turns off when taking the phone to the ear but it doesn't turn on again after i take it away from my ear.
It's pretty bad on my phone. The screen turns on when I am on a call making the notification bar drop down. Also, the phone doesn't wake up when I pull the phone away from my fasce 80% of the time. When I am on a call the phone randomly vibrates like I am getting a notification and when I look I have nothing. With all of this going on, making phone calls on this device is a nightmare.
Restore clean wipe did nothing.

The below mentioned fix is for brand new Nexus 6.

Orzly works fine... It doesn't cover the sensor. The Slimwrap orange vinyl (leather) face was a problem for me, had to enlarge the cutout to get suitable performance. I believe the sensor is longer than it is wide, the opposite of the factory cutout? It frames the face of the phone nicely with this screen protector on and I didn't want to take it off. The 24mm added height changes the profile of the phone alot, it no longer rests on the speaker bars/guards. This must also have effected placing the wrap on as well. The larger cutout box for the sesnor is a detractor, but the sensor works 100%. This is good , as it is my intention to run nekid with this phone but its size precludes using a case with any of the pockets I currently own.

Thanks I was just having a crazy time trying to install the front, similar case (glass protector in front) and ended up cutting a hole for the proximity sensor about 2 times the factory height, everything (seems) normal now. I used this program to help make the minimum cut, and align correctly. Did you run into any issues with the thin left & right vertical part of the front cover? Mine seems to "wrap" around the glass protector, not sure if it will stay there though
