[DISCUSSION] Cleaning the TW Lollipop build - Galaxy S 5 General

I started this thread in hopes we could discuss the cleaning process of this new lollipop release. There's quite a bit of bloat that could be removed, but since this is new, it's hard to know exactly what could be safely removed without facing a bootloop or force close loop. Does anyone have a list of what can safely be removed from the lollipop release? I opened Root Explorer and searched around a little and there's a ton of knox related stuff in there, for example. A little polish bloatware apps as well.
EDIT: I apparently removed far too much in my cleaning attempt as I faced a bootloop and I'm now currently reflashing through Odin,

This isn't a question per se. A discussion, if you will. I edited the first post to reflect just that a bit more.

Not everything needs to be sweeped up and sent to the Q&A. This is a valid thread since so many users will face the same problem.
Why do you want everything moved out of the General threads section? I've never seen such aggressive mods who fail to promote activity on a board and actually stifle collaboration. They take the fun out of everything XDA stands for.

Just delete the folder of the bloat and than it should work faster, i would only want someone to create a custom kernel stock modified, becauss battery drain is bad xD

That's just it. Deleting too much makes me end up in a bootloop. I gave it a second go and ended up in another bootloop. It seems you can't just up and remove all knox related files (are they tied to something bigger?).
Hmm.

Knox related libs and a lot of code written into the firmware for a start, plus other files not in app or priv-app folders

I searched for "knox" in Root Explorer and removed every file relating to "knox" (a couple of apps here and there and lib files). I guess that was the mistake; wrecklessly removing it all.

A, If its a question it needs to go in Q&A, doesnt matter how many people face the problem. if theyre searching like the rules tell them to theyll see it in q&a
B, he posed it as a question, hence i was pondering if its shouldnt be in Q&A, as thats where questions go he responded and said it was meant to be more of a discussion topic and he needed to rewords it. the reworded thread isnt a question but a collaborative effort therefore its not a question.
C, making people post in correct sections isn't a stifle on activity its promotion of common sense

Regular safe bloat like Sammy crapware, and then all knox related files (I suspect it didn't like me deleting the knox files).

[Q] Dumb question

I'm about to throw my monitor out the window after going through 5 pages of google and only finding people talking about it but not defining the acronym.
What does "CSC" stand for. The letters. I know what it does. I just need to know the letter before my brain explodes.
Thanks

I'm serious, I gave you the options that were possible, Yes you're on XDA, but you're also in off topic, where there is little phone talk.. at all.
But now that you gave the correct info
Basically:
CSC is country specific code. It's some app as well as settings for 3G network providers and things like that. However, as of now only russian and region independent CSCs are available with the newer ROMs. In order to get internet on your phone in china you'll have to enter the APN manually. Info like that varies per provider and its easily found using google.
The phone file is what you would call the radio rom.
The PDA is the ROM. The software/firmware. It include android and all the apps that get installed along with it like samsungs touchwiz and swype.
It is preferable to update all three at the same time, however, not always necessary. An outdated modem (phone) firmware might result in compatibility issues (although very unlikely) and old CSCs can cause problems if the apps are outdated or apn settings are wrong.
However, CSCs, phone and pda files ate always distributed in complete packages so there really isn't abig deal.
There is no such thing as HSPL. Firmwares on samsung phones are installed using Odin (samsung-firmwares.com).
If you factory reset (just like on the wimo phones) you'll revert to the original settings of the rom/firmware you currently have installed. To get your phone completely back to factory settings you'll have to flash the factory rom that came with your device.

CSC files are availible for download and a quick search on XDA brings hundreds of results, I'd figure people would know what it is without me having to specify "In the context of Android cellphones" (considering the site we are on).
I wanted to know what it meant and every search on google returned non-android answers or posts that talked about CSC files and their functionality, but none that specified what the acronym meant!

Clean the forums a bit?

I'm not sure what the policy regarding useless posts on the forums is, but in my opinion about 8/10 topics could be deleted altogether...
I've been reading the SGM forums for a year or so, flashed a lot of ROMs and solved a lot of problems, and posted a couple of useless posts. About six months ago there was mostly useful info here, but now if a search for anything, there are just threads like "OMGplzzzamigonnabrickmyphoneififlasangrybirdsinmyphnfrmPlystore!!!!!?)(&%&/LOL".. it's frustrating. It's really hard to find even the stuff i know are here, and have read some time ago. (Should use bookmarks more)
So, could the mods use a heavier hand in filtering all the pointless and plain stupid threads here?
(If this post is useless or pointless, mods can feel free to delete it.)

Why do YOU need root acces?

In the light of the new FW update and the problem with getting root access I was wondering - why do people want to have root access.
I like to have my device rooted, but actually I can't think of any functions or apps I use that require root - other than flashing an occasional MOD that needs it to install. Oh - and I like to use Root FTP so I can transfer files on my home wireless network and not need a USB cable. And I use the advanced root requiring options in BetterBatteryStats.
For what purpose do you have your device rooted?

Personally it's good so one can remove all that irritating bloatware, but I've opted not to root, as Sky Go app won't work with rooted access so as to protect its downloaded content. Besides one can simply disable annoying apps in settings.

I agree with your point, my device is also not rooted and I am happy with my device current status, having more than 100 apps in my phones. I have heard that rooting sometimes brick your phone, or sometimes less stable than stock Rom. The developers of stock rom are obviously not illiterate instead they have super knowledge, if you think they are not then you probably need some real rest. No offence.

Backup number one, and trust me it was a pain in the backside not having any form of application backups.
Uninstalling Sony bloatware trial rubbish.
Fix problems with the phone, like WIFI because the same problem exists with the new firmware.
Adaway, forgot how good this application works until I didn't have it.
Connect my DSLR via usb cable to full control my camera from the phone including liveview.
Lightflow led notification works better with root.
Installing mods like making those horrible softkeys smaller, pureaudio...
Can change the DPI of my screen to get some benefit from the full HD screen.
Mod the headphones so the skip track keys actually skips the tracks and not just adjusting volume.

It is pointless cause it is a simple question. A question that has been answered a billion times.
You can Google it and there's a bunch of articles, forums, etc... That already answered this question.
Or maybe use the search button in xda.

I disagree that it is pointless. With the links you gave me there's a lot of reasons why rooted units have advantages, yes.
But by asking in a forum where people use the same device as I do, use the same software as I do and get the same errors as I do the answers here are more relevant to me - and maybe others in this section of XDA as well.
Sure, we can just search and Google everything and rely on simple answers without debate but it seems to me that you will end up with a sterile and stale forum where people are not allowed to just talk.
If mods find that this thread is spam and a source of flooding XDA, a breaking of the rules and regulations and unconstructive, then mods should by all means close the thread.
I wouldn't want to use up all the space on the Internet, or destroy this forum with wear and tear from my pointless thread.

Not worth reporting, threads of this type are unnecessary anyway, not sure why op copied that thread(they left the [/QUOTE] at the end lol), its not a lot of words to write yourself.

So far the thread is going pretty well! But I must admit, that is an amateur mistake! - Next time, change the hyper links. then none of this would have happened! :good:
"The purpose of this thread is to provide a singular location to talk about all updates for all regions. There is no need to create a new thread for every update for every region. Just discuss it here in this thread"
You can't discuss all updates in one place, you need to maintain some order. It's not convenient if one person talks about v10A, other about v10H and the third one talks about v20A, and all that in one thread on the same page. Subthreads are necessary in these situations. You can make a general thread about this phone where you can discuss about different visual themes or such less-relevant things, but official updates/ROMs/kernels need to be subthreaded because it's easier to find specific information you're looking for. After all, that's the true purpose of threads and subthreads, isn't it?
OP, if you realise and looked at the past, there's already a well used and discussed thread for this purpose. Of course its title can be tweaked a little.

if threads are unnecessary, might break some rules, or whatever you think might be wrong, then it is worth reporting
that's exactly the point of this button.
many people think the report button would be "holy", and you would only be allowed to press it in "worst cases". but, in fact, the opposite is the case. most mods are thankful you hitting the report button. FSM's are splitted my manufacturers, "our" FSM team has to deal with all sony(ericsson), LG and Motorola sections, so the chance for seeing something going wrong is ~0.
sorry for the heavy OT, but i just had to let it out now

OP, if you realise and looked at the past, there's already a well used and discussed thread for this purpose. Of course its title can be tweaked a little.

HAHA!! i see. how abt "official LG rom discussion thread"? lol but the current title is good enough imo, having the contents that really counts.
Just saying....
So.... 2 pages so far and not really anything in the way of discussion regarding O4X updates.....
I tend to side with the view that LG are far more likely to concentrate future efforts on new devices rather than issue significant firmware updates to existing models; by cell phone handset standards, the O4X whilst still very capable and adaptable is already something of a dinosaur where age is concerned.
What keeps us going is the excellent work done by the devs and custom rom artists

No, but on stock ROM rooted you will still get the notification and it will still download but it will fail to install.

As long as you have a stock recovery and not a custom one you can take an OTA. You will probably loose root though.

How could you not possibly see one of the thousands of 4.3 threads that have been created the past week? I usually try not to flame but... Damn, lazy people.

How are you going to ask that but then not see his reply about him apologizing for not seeing it because he got the notification and came straight here. So get the hack out of this thread and quit trying to be cool by an attempted flame that already apologized AND answered your "flaming question" before you even ask it but then you ask why he didn't see something?

haha for real? here's a response formatted in the long run-on sentence structure that you like to use because I fear if I don't use it you won't get my point.
"How are you going to flame me but then go on to say that it's not cool to flame when you clearly don't understand what the point of pointing out this kind of lazy behavior is? So go troll somewhere else and quit trying to be some sort of pseudo mod by trying call out legitimate criticisms of other users because you don't understand that apologizing for doing something wrong while performing it doesn't make it right ESPECIALLY considering the facts the OP gave us about not turning his phone on for a week. Who would come on here and assume they are the first to get an update without thoroughly checking? and make a thread in the dev section so rashly? The OP would. So I called him out on it. So he won't be inclined to make the same mistake twice. I can only hope that this post will be as beneficial for you.
good day.

Atleast he is trying to contribute by uploading files.... Can't be mad at that even tho he's a little late to the party. It could have been much worse with a what's the best 4.3 ROM or a install question thread.

I so hate having to sift through all the bashing. Just move on if you don't like what you see. Good God.

I really hate to be that guy, but this really doesn't belong in the development section.
Well hot dang....
I am currently on trip and have not turned on my phone on for the benefit of my family. I was in the airport when I first turned it on to see what I missed. Since it came up when I turned it on, I came here first as I've been dying for an update and I was willing to bet that others were in the same boat. I did what I would normally do with updates and download them and upload them somewhere for safe keeping. Then came here and posted my screenshots and moved on. It wasn't until I got into the plane that I saw that its been about a week, that its been out, and that development goes on with or without me. Sure I didn't have to apologize in advance and sure I didn't have to put the disclaimer at the bottom that if what i posted up was old news then please delete. I would of been fine with the thread being deleted or moved in which case it was. I've been here for so long and have contributed to numerous threads and development to know that if something new comes out, jump on it and share the info with the everyone. It wasn't to flame on the threads, it wasn't to spam and clutter the dev section. The mere fact that this happen show immaturity.
A simple note saying please move thread to general discussion would of suffice, not bring hatred and ignorance into a community that is devoted to acquire knowledge and to share it.
While some of us don't have that pleasure to get updates first, I have been blessed with having on time or in Moto case, Moto feedback team which I have always participated in. Again plain and simple I tried to help by providing info and supply for devs out there to work on. Yes It would of been simple for me to thorough look thru the threads and see whats been going on. And I did that after posting and did see that I was not first. Thats fine. It wasn't laziness that brought this, it was something that jumped on in the hopes to help out. But take the hatred else where as if your going to take offence in someone trying to help then you dont belong here, plain and simple.
