Amazon had a tab S 8.4 on their lightening deals so I went for it. I have a GS5 and am looking forward to entering the android tablet ecosystem after having an ipad for so long.
Any suggestions for a new comer to the android tablet ecosystem? Apps (Samsung or generic) tips and tricks? I'm aware of side sync 3.0 so i'll look into that. I'm a pilot so any other pilots out there with android aviation app experience, i'd love to hear your suggestions for foreflight killers.
How well will the tablet stay synced to my phone? meaning, if i download an app on my phone, will it show up on the tablet too? Just curious how well google/android does with the cross over of having and android tablet and phone.
Thanks guys!

When you get it root it and flash cm if you want it smooth or debloat touchwiz, and if you download apps on your phone they won't install on your tablet but they will be listed in the Play Store under My Apps>All
You don't have to root, just bung on Nova launcher and it's fine. Yeah all apps purchased can be installed on both if compatible.

I definitely would not root when you first get it. Play with it for while to see it you like it the way it is before rooting. I've used Android devices for years and used to always root them. I've not rooted my last two devices and probably won't. As discussed above apps purchased on one can be installed on the other. Apps that use any sort of cloud sync are good for keeping the data on your tablet and phone in sync.
I was planning on using touchwiz for a while just to see what it was like on a tablet. I'm interested in trying CM11 or some other custom rom on it. Any suggestions of roms other than CM? CM is all i've ever used on my phone...
I have nova on my GS5 and love it. Will the licence carry over for a tablet?
Thanks guys.

Haha of course. I'm assuming CM12 is based on 5.0?
What are some apps that you have on your tablet that you don't have on your phone? Just wondering how people use their tablet differently than their phone

I haven't seen too many options besides CM for this tablet.
I don't have the license for nova, but for other apps that require license/payment, it transfers over.

Yes, CM12 is based on 5.0 (Lollipop).
Mostly the same apps for me. For example, I have hulu, hbo go, etc on my phone and tablet, but would much rather watch them on the tablet given the screen size and quality.

So this is still a pretty new device, just rooted last week, and currently has no roms or recovery image available.
I am curious what things we can do to our STOCK rooted rom to improve performance.
Obviously overclocking is something we can do and has real benefits.
We can remove some of the bloatware that AT&T installs.
What else can we do to a stock rom to make it more efficient and more like an optimized custom rom, while we wait for the rom cooks to make us something nice?

Woops, thanks mod!
like you said: overclock and remove bloatware. thats about it with root. use a custom launcher and it should be even faster.
What about zip aligning (what does this actually mean anyways)?
Any other kernel or system\general android tweaks?
Nuke/freeze the bloatware and wait for ICS to come out. Install ADW Launcher EX to get a smoother desktop experience. Overclock and enjoy owning the fastest dual-core Android tablet on the market at the moment.
Don't sweat deodexing or zipaligning, performance gains are minimal for the effort, learning curve is steep.

Get Titanium Backup from the Market, use it to nuke (uninstall) or freeze (just what it sounds like) bloatware applications. Careful with the nuking, best to just freeze so they don't run and don't show up in the app tray.
I hear that there are other apps on the market that will do the same thing, but I've been a Tit man for years, no need to change.

How about getting a newer version of the marketplace?
I noticed mine was way different looking then the market on my roommates eeepad transformer.
We compared versions and mine was way way older, and infact downloading way older versions of alot of apps.
For reference my market version is 1.0.28 and his is 3.4.4, my sprint evo 4g is also 3.4.4.

1.028 is not right. did you leave your tab connected to the internet for a while. it should auto update.
Don't rush the market update, trust me.
Sure, the Market browsing screen is flashier, but 3.4.4. on the Tab looks like ****e in the My Apps section, and loses some functionality. It's really a phone Market that's not quite formatted right for tablets yet. I'm guessing there will be an update again soon, for ICS tablets
That said, go to the Themes and Apps section in the 10.1 forums (or 8.9 too, think), there's a link to the APK, you can easily try it out.

My tablet is ALWAYS connected to the internet, and I tried to search for updates multiple times in the about system settings dialog and it always said it was up to date.
Also wanted to add that I did go ahead and install the 3.4.4 market last night. One of the apps I was hoping would be updated was Words with Friends, in the newer market it downloads a higher version number of the game, but in reality it is the exact same old version that was actually correctly version marked in my original market.
So basically even though it claims to be the newest version, it still gets the old version, even though in the version number in the game itself also claims to be the newer one.

I have version 3.61 on the tablet and 4.61 on the phone. if you try to install the program from the android market website it says that program version varies by device. it is possible that 4.61 is not prepared for honeycomb yet. you could always find an apk for 4.61 online and install it. If you do, let me know how it goes.
tried the newest version of words on the tablet and it FCs every time.

I tried this, but for some reason my chrome sync does not seem to work, like at all.
Not really sure why, but I cant see bookmarks from chrome on my tab, and chrome sees nothing from the tab bookmarks.
Even though when looking at my sync settings in google it looks like it all should be working....
arg
EDIT: So looking online and I find this http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=63eebdb9d371658d&hl=en&start=40
Apparently sync for bookmarks is basically broken on honeycomb...
Is there another way to wipe these crappy att bookmarks?
Use it as a phone?
Can anyone install an app on the AT&T 8.9 tab for making phone calls? What about SMS? I am considering it but I don't want to switch my current smartphone SIM into a data only sim...

No not atm, no application like setcpu works, we need to get it unlocked as the user stated above. Gonna be awhile.

None of the roms I've seen for the N7 have that carousel feature. Most people that want to throw a rom on a Kindle tend to dislike that interface. You can try searching but I find it unlikely.

I have my KFHD rooted and have ADW EX launcher installed and set as my default desktop. I hit the home button and I have a "stock" Android tablet (complete with Play Store and any app from there I want - although a very few won't work). I run the Amazon "launcher" (I have it as a shortcut in the ADW dock) and I have the KFHD desktop carousel.
So, with my setup, I have the best of both in one - a stock Android 4.x tablet (well, 98%) and the KFHD tablet. :victory: You won't get that with the Nexus.
You don't get the Amazon Prime Video (and maybe any Amazon video?) with the Nexus. I had both and kept the KFHD over the Nexus for the Amazon goodies!
Hope that helps your decision.

can you post more information on how you did that? I have the root guide, but i have no info on the ADW launcher.
Also, is there a way to expand the kindle fire memory via usb cable or any other means?
I had a rooted KFHD and it felt like nothing more than a gimped android device. You won't have Google now, no voice commands (unless Amazon implements it), talk isn't fully functional, and so forth. These will all be dependant on a custom ROM.
I am not a big media consumer so the Amazon ecosystem is not what I want. I enjoy the openness of the nexus and all the new jellybean and beyond updates from Google. Amazon will just be Amazon.
Don't get me wrong, the KFHD is not a bad device at all, you just need to like their ecosystem. It's even better if you have Amazon prime to help you consume media for "free".
It comes down to your needs and wants but again, if you're just looking for KFHD hardware and pure android software, it's not the best choice right now until the bootloader gets unlocked. That was the position I was in and I did not regret returning the KFHD for the N7. I felt nothing but trapped when using the KFHD. I'm very happy with the N7.
The 16 GB N7 is now $199 on par with the KFHD and you can get a 32 GB for $249.

ADW EX is a paid app available on Google Play, but other free launchers work as well (there is a thread here somewhere). You just have to put the apk in system/app folder (again you have to be rooted to do this) using a file manager with root access (I use Root Browser Lite - it's free). But don't install it, just move it there. Reboot and when you hit the home key, the dialog should pop up to ask you which launcher you want to use. Click the launcher you want (ADW in this case) and select if you want to use it always (I did) or just once (in which case you'll be asked every time you click the home button).
Then like I said, I put the original launcher (called Launcher oddly enough ) in the dock so I could access the Amazon stuff. Alternatively, you could put it on the desktop, or just launch it from the app drawer.
As far as memory, I'm not sure what you mean...

I'm kind of the opposite as I don't use any of the voice commands, etc you mention, but do use the Amazon features - especially the Prime Video (can't beat it for $80/year along with the free shipping deal!).
I had the Nexus 7, but felt that it didn't really offer anything more than my Galaxy Note except for a bigger screen of course! I'm rooted with an AoKP ROM, so it's stock with extra goodies. As I mentioned Prime Video made the decision easy for me (and I travel so it's nice to have that option when the hotel's entertainment choices suk!)
That's the beauty of Android though - we have a choice!:victory:

I hear ya on that. The nexus 7 is my first JB device, as my Evo 3D is still stock and stuck on ICS so this is an improved experience.
Sounds like devs are getting somewhere with hijacking the KFHD. There is hope out there, but everything is still in early development. Something good to see though.

Hey guys.
I am finally in the market for a tablet. This HP TouchPad seems to be the best bang for the buck (for me anyhow)
How is android on it? I saw in the dev section that it seems pretty stable and solid for not being android native.
Secondly, hows not having a microSD slot?
Also, is the process for putting android on it really hard? I never rooted/hacked something without a microSD slot.. makes me wonder how it works unless everything is done via computer.
Thanks all!
Oh one other question, do things like flash work on websites? I know how to manually install the APK and i use xScope Pro browser on my Galaxy S3 and it works wonders. Is the same method applied to the android versions of HP TouchPad?
Also do the ROMs support USB OTG?

Android is great Start with the latest CM9 nightly then once you're used to this Tablet upgrade to CM10.
No micro = no problem get a 32gig Use Google Play for music if you have a lot.
Yes you need a PC, shouldn't take more than 15/20 minutes to install and it is easy .
This is very good up to date guide http://rootzwiki.com/topic/31548-ho...-with-sound-camera-microphone-updated-121712/ with links to everything you will need and a video tutorial.
You seem to know your stuff so I'm sure you won't have any problems.
Buy one and have fun.
And don't forget you still have WebOS which still has a lot going for it.

Im not really interested in WebOS lol. And CM10 is what im looking at running. I feel confident in getting flash working if its pretty close to other devices.
Also, when you say Powered OTG, that means the devices port is providing the power and simple things like mice USB drives will work without a hub?
Seems like i'll enjoy it a lot. Looking to get it for streaming and videos and entertainment. Things like facebook youtube.
How's the display? Ive been spoiled by my galaxy S3 and S2 super amoled displays. Hows this one look?
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582771 is all about OTG basically you need a battery /mains powered Y cable /hub all the info is on the first page.
I use this to watch all my DL American TV shows and think the screen is great .Don't forget this was originally as expensive as an I pad. Also I was thinking about a Samsung Tab 2 until I saw/used one over Christmas and I'm glad I still have the HP.
The short answer to your main question is that the touchpad handles android very well and that the display is excellent. I wish it did have have an SD slot, but I've gotten along quite well without one. As I haven't tried CM10, and won't until it seems a bit more stable, CM9 has generally worked great.
Don't think you be dissappointed with one of these.
Enjoy.

There are multiple roms for hp touchpad users and each have there own weaknesses and strengths
The best way to familiarize yourself with rom types is to download the free app goomanager in the play store.
It will help you get the roms
In my perspective i beleive that the rom in the attachments is the best
It has no visible bugs and works smoothly on Hp touchpad
Mic works
Camera works- 1.3M
Cm 10 is new and beta so i would not recommend it
Try the one that is recommended in text file

Westlaw (Next, not classic) has a meh app (basically a glorified mobile web app), but text is much easier to read on a bigger screen. LexisNexis doesn't have one as far as I know. Google Drive is good for documents.
I don't agree that CM10 is not ready as a daily driver. I use it as one and have since the latest preview came out. That's something you will probably need to try for yourself.

I've never run Ubuntu on any hardware (Arch) and I use only CM10 on my TP, so I can't really speak to that. Maybe someone else here who is running Ubuntu on the TP can help you out. I would imagine that the software repositories in Ubuntu could be helpful, like LibreOffice or a LaTeX editor, but I'm not sure how that would work out on a touchscreen.

I'm posting this here because this is really only relevant to those of us who have flashed custom roms.
Like many of us, I was interested in flashing because I didn't like the limitations of the FireOS, especially stuck on Android 4.0. Sadly, the CM13 launcher doesn't pass "the wife test" the way the original FireOS Carousel did.
Turns out some people in my family actually enjoy using the Kindle as a... you know, Kindle. Yes, I'll be installing Amazon's apps so we don't lose access to that, but is there any way to get a launcher similar to the Carousel? Or a way to get the Carousel launcher apk (would that even work)? That way we can have our cake and eat it too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't isn't that a thread about putting the entire FireOS back on and wipe out the newer version of Android I'm running now? That's not what I want to do. My wife likes the Carousel UI for browsing the latest books and videos, but we otherwise hate the browser, softkeys (back, home, menu and search somehow look so dorky and out of place compared to the modern 3 shape setup), and inability to install most apps which require kitkat or later.
In other words, I'm happy I'm not running FireOS anymore. The only thing I liked about it was the Carousel launcher. I'd love to get the original launcher back if that's somehow possible, along with its ability to tap into my Amazon account and offer suggestions based on our habits. But I recognize that its probably more likely I'll manage to get an alternative launcher than port the original.

You can flash Gapps, root it. So you can have "carousel" you want. But still be able to I stall play store, etc... There is another i found on a different forum that you may be looking for. It's a hybrid FireOS and aosp android....I'll have to find it. I will when I'm off work.

Oh, interesting!
Update: I had actually read about Kinology, but I think it is still based on ICS (4.0). A bunch of apps I'm trying to install keep throwing parse errors, which I've gathered is due to the way later versions of Android handled APKs versus earlier ones. Older versions of things have sideloaded fine, but for example, the last few releases of Kodi require at leat Kitkat (4.4), and keep throwing errors upon installation. I'm afraid Kinology will have the same issue since it is so old!
