[Q] Unable to download texts with attachments on Straight Talk - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. To set the conditions, I'm using Straight Talk as my carrier with their ATT compatibible nano-Sim. My N6 is also bone stock...not rooted or ROM'd...yet
As the title states, whenever I recieve a text with data attached to it (picture or video), it will not download. When this occurs, the message I get gives basic info (text time, size, sender) and then says "tap to download" and when I do it says "Downloading" then eventually says "Failed to download."
Ironically, I can send a text with attachments and it is received without issue. Test subjects were my wife's iPhone 5s, also using a Straight Talk ATT compatible nano sim and my parents, both on with GS4's on contract with Verizon. Also, regular texts (text only, no attachments) seem to come through just fine.
I've used S-T's app from the Play Store to walk me through setting all the APN fields, but that only screws things up. When I do this, I lose celluar data capability, but luckily the phone calling works. To fix, I just "restore to default" in the APN menue. I've Googled and found various "how to fix APNs for Android on Straight Talk" and updated all the settings according to those guides, with the same results: I lose celluar data capability but retain capability to make calls.
If you use S-T with their ATT nano-sim and you can recieve texts with pictures or attachments (MMS), would you mind posting screen shots of your APN settings, please?

Check to see if you have mobile data enabled. MMS requires mobile data (not just WiFi) to download attachments.

Thanks. Yes, mobile data is enabled. I have full LTE signal and can surf the web and send texts with attachments without issue. It's recieving/downloading texts with attachments that seem to be the problem.

Can I receive media mail via wifi?

I'm leaving soon to a place where I won't be able to use my cell phone. So, I've dumbed down my phone plan; I no longer have MediaNet, but i'm still being sent pictures which I can't open.
Is it possible to use wifi instead of the data plan to receive these MMS files?

Try going to http://www.viewmymessage.com. This is the site iPhone losers, err users, get directed to when they receive an MMS since they cannot view them on their phone.
-Edit-
Sorry, that won't work for you. The site requires a special code to retrieve the message, and you won't receive it without being in AT&T's service area.
same deal for orange uk users: http://www1.orange.co.uk/mms/r.php
both sites require log ins
Edit: i'm in the US & I have a Tilt under AT&T
Unless AT&T offers a similar feature on their website to read the messages from there, then no, you can only receive them through the cell connection.
But usually (at least with our providers here), MMS uses a different connection that is separate from the web access, and where only MMS can go through. Check your provider's website or call them to ask about it.

your friend probably caught a glitch... when i had a blackberry i could use the internet on it without a data plan or wifi, but everything else that came with the data plan didn't work.
however, i also didn't know you had to have the data plan for mms to work. i thought this came with the messaging plan? then again i use t-mobile. i take it your on at&t or something? i have a friend who has a g1 with no data plan and he sends me picture messages. (he's also on t-mobile)
im on t mobile. i have unlimited messaging but from day 1 could never send an mms or recieve one. there used to be a have with the apns but it doesnt work anymore.

waaaat? i've always got them without any data plan whatsoever. and i know the people who send them to me don't have one. maybe we're just lucky and i should shut my mouth before t-mobile finds out.
edit: dunno about mytouch, though. i've always had a data plan on this. but blackberry didn't need one and nor did any other phone. but all my other phones before blackberry weren't considered "smartphones."
weird...
yeah, i cant download the mms message, pressing the button to downlad does nothing...

like you can't see the picture you get? or it just tells you that you have a mms and you have to download? it never asks me anything like that. i've seen another person say that they can't download mms (even with data plan because of an error), but i just get the mms without clicking download.
maybe they don't actually have a data plan, though. people here seem to tend to leave out the most important details. i don't know how to help, though. i would have put money on it you could get a picture message without a data plan as long as you had texting.
are you sure you have a G1?! ha but i thought everone had to dowload the mms before you could actually see it. Thats all ive heard and if been trying to find the answer for a year and a half! I thought it was wierd that whe my friend when up north and it switched to AT&T he was able to recieve picture messages. I get a notification that says 0 new messages which is weird...but then i have the message in the thread with only a download button. i have an "mms notification" it says when i long press and click details on the message.
anyone?
Is there other people who can recieve mms without the data plan on t mobile?
I do have unllimited messaging, and i could recieve them on everyother phone i owned except my g1.
i have a mytouch, and no i never have to click download... i gust get a new msg and it has a little paper clip on it and it shows directly up... now thats for PICTURE... ones that have music or something i have to click download but as for pictures not once have i had to download... am i supposed to have to click download on picture? lol. that's odd as hell.
What's up everyone. If u have a g1 or my touch with tmobile and u don't have a data plan and u can send and receive mms please post ur apn settings. I think that's why we are here. Thanks.
im going to bump this thread because the issue hasnt been resolved yet
If you root a mytouch can you then use MMS again? I want to get the MyTouch slide but with no data plan.
i am having the same issue except sometimes i get the pics and sometimes i don't i think it depends on the size and maybe what network the sender is on. I changed some settings and started getting pics but when I tried it again i'm not getting them. still working on it. I have a G1
I have a G1 with the new prepaid plan and no data plan, i can recieve pictures and videos but i cant send any at all. Does anyone know why?
Your phone has to have a data connection to receive MMS. With MMS, the network basically sends your phone a special SMS message containing a URL and your phone then loads the URL to retrieve the full MMS message.
You shouldn't need a data plan to use MMS as your carrier should charge visits to that URL as MMS and not regular data usage, but you do still need your carrier's APN setup in your phone.

So, what are the APN settings for T-mobile?
I have a similar problem, I get free mms from my carrier but to receive them I need to turn on data, If its off I receive a message with download button but it says: cant download atm, try again later. If I have data on it downloads perfectly. To do this you need to have 2 apns configured, one for net and one for mms, on your provider webpage there should be the configurations you need around the suport areas, or ask someone with same phone and carrier to copy them.
My problem is that I have a data plan, and so when I turn on the data it starts synchronizing, downloading mails etc... and wastes my limited badwidth.
Now I do remember on my stock phone I used to be able to grab mms with data off.. anyone have a clue about how to do it? or some app that blocks net but not the mms?

[Q] MMS no data plan

I have a 7mo old nephew and every now and then his parents send pictures of funny/cute stuff he does but I'm unable to receive them.
I get a download button but on wifi I can't retrieve it. I have data disabled because I don't have the $15/mo for a data plan.
I'd be willing to pay the $0.30/mms to be able to see the occasional pic.
Is there anyway I could disable auto update and background data and be able to turn on data when I get a pic from them and be able to get it without getting slapped with a data plan? <(really stupid policy of AT&T's)
I know I could with my non-smart phone (samsung eternity) but I don't know how to do that with the Samsung Captivate (cyanogenmod). I was told at&t does a sweep for smartphones w/out data and auto add it and the only way to avoid it was to keep data off at all times.
Also what MMS settings do I need? I'll admit to being a complete n00b on all this. thanks.
Thanks for any help!
You could try following the instructions on this post, down toward the bottom, to alter your APN settings for MMS only: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...y-s-gt-i9000-mms-internet-settings-t-apn.html
The problem is that MMS is sent over the data connection and not over WiFi, so you will have to turn your mobile data on make it work. The APN settings would appear to limit your traffic to MMS, but whether this would trigger AT&T's data plan policy, I have no clue. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.
As an alternative, they can send the MMS to your email address instead of your phone number and you could get it that way.
Is it possible to tell your family to send the pictures to your gmail account?

Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
After going by AT&T I found some mixed news:
Good: Our family unlimited messaging plan includes MMS.
Bad: AT&T detected last month that I have a smartphone (with data off) and added generously the $25/mo data plan w/out so much a text message.
I got them to drop it to the $15 plan and have to call customer service monday to see about getting a partial refund since I didn't use it.
On a semi related note: Since it looks like I may be getting a non-smartphone, what is a good touchscreen phone that does NOT require a data plan?
Thanks for all the help everyone
Of course they did. This is the most unfair rule ever; it's like AT&T telling you how you should use your phone. That sucks
I don't know anything about current phones that are out. I would just go to an AT&T store and play with them to find one you like.
Agreed. I understand that in the long run less people probably complain about a data plan than the accidental/negligent data charges that would probably happen but it's still unfair to give NO other option.
I swapped to my backup phone, the samsung eternity. Descent phone but screen is inaccurate, calendar function is tiresome and no threaded texting (good music though). I will look at what phones they have (including GoPhones) and then get one online, who wants to waste an upgrade on a lesser phone?
On a similar note, will Straight Talk or any other prepay phones work with AT&T sim? I know GoPhone will.
I plan to get the data removed and try for at least a partial credit for the last month of data I didn't use.
I may ebay the Captivate since who knows how long it may be till I can afford a data plan.

[Q] T-mobile 2014 Moto X in London International texting & data won't work

I have a Moto X pure edition on t-mobile simple choice plan. I'm in London and have not received any texts or emails notifying me that I am abroad and can now use t-mobiles free texting and data or paid plans. I tried a few things, rebooting, reset APN settings and changing apn settings to ipv4 and using epc.tmobile.com as the address. Nothing so far. I can look up the networks and see T-mobile but can't register. My phone's clock also didn't change, had to do it manually.
Need help. I'll try and call t-mobile soon.
This is from my memory with a Nexus 4, but should be the same basic idea. Try going into Settings, Networks, Cellular Networks, let it load then select T-Mobile's local partner. Might take some trial and error to get the right one if there are multiple local carriers around, but shouldn't take more than a couple minutes.
Tried that already on the phone with the T-mobile rep. none of it worked always the same error "This connection is not available at this time. Please try again later."
Not sure if this will help, but you do have roaming enabled right? I remember with my Nexus 4, when I traveled internationally, I had to enable roaming for my texts and data to work.

I had the same problem while travelling to the Caribbean. I tried all the settings (even dialed #766 to enable Data Roaming). I never got it to work even after opening tickets with T-Mobile. I always had Cell service to make calls , but there was an exclamation on the bar(s) icon indicating there was an issue with data.
Hopefully you can get it working.
I haven't had ANY service at all. No texting no voice call no data. Nothing. Phone shows that there's emergency calls only. Was working fine at home and in DC. I have cellular data on and roaming and have tried messing the the APN settings some. Didn't work so I reset to default.

SOLVED(dev)(carrier)(cm) mms only sending via wifi

hello captivate community, i have a question regarding sending picture via cm11. i picked up an i897 on ebay which was delivered a week ago and source built ktu84q using strictly cyanogenmod repos. after the joy of realizing the recovery is baked into the kernel...... i was able to pursue my kitkat journey, no problem. im experiencing difficulty with sending a picture message however. airvoice is my carrier and data is working. wcdma preffered mode w/ 3g. h is data icon if its of any significance, and i manually entered the correct apn configuration and followed the instructions via the airvoice website. i also tried hangouts, which resulted with a message not sent. touch to retry. funny thing is, if my wifi is active, a picture message sends no problem. any suggestions?

Did you have that issue when you got the phone?
I'm thinking it might be an issue with the ROM you're currently using. It's a shot in the dark though as it could be something in your network settings.
Best thing to do (after trying different network options/settings) would be to backup your stuff, flash stock, test it. If it works, write down your settings and test them on the ROM you wanna use. If it doesn't work on stock, it's either a problem with your carrier or some user error (network settings).
its a known bug (for me anyways) some cm roms (multiple devices) cannot edit *#*#4636*#*# phone info changing network. when i enter the phone info menu, signal immediately drops and when i attempt to change the network, it defaults to unknown. if i enter and exit airplane mode, the signal returns (wcdma preffered). i need to enter a build.prop edit to set the network, which i have yet had time to do. i will retest on stock rom when i am able.
solved
Add default,MMS to APN type of MMS APN. Reboot
