[Q] NTFS support? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I'm planning on getting a G 2014, but I want to know about NTFS support. Is it out of the box? (in stock KitKat and/or Lollipop). I looked around and didn't find much on the 2014 model. On the 2013 some said it worked, for others didn't. This is essential to me, as I have several 3TB HDDs
Of course, all are self powered in a dock. The are 3.5" anyways, is not possible to power those through USB.
And finally, do Y OTG cables work? The ones that let you charge the phone while using the OTG functionality. Like this

Please don't buy moto g 2014
I don't know anything about NTFS support.. But the mobile sucks in all
Memory management bug is the reason
Don't buy it

No ntfs is not supported. You need custom kernel for this. And yes otg works fine. I have tested usb stick, mouse and keyboard

My buffalo 3.0 1TB HDD is working perfectly on my xt1068,just you need to install total commander and a USB plugin and it even works on non rooted devices.Google total commander and here's the link for USB plugin https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro

This thread about a statically compiled ntfs-3g binary for Android may be of interest. Chainfire's Stickmount can also use ntfs-3g, if it is present.
AFAIK, those Y-splitters don't allow you to charge any device whilst it is in host mode. A powered hub with a dedicated upstream connector might be a better option.

I see...
Isn't there an app to install and be done? (aside from rooting first). I wouldn't mind even if it was a paid one. I understand very little of custom kernels and modding. Would the USB OGT Helper work?

If you want write support for NTFS -- or only read support, for that matter -- the easiest method is to use an app that support's either Paragon's proprietory solution, as described above, or ntfs-3g. Assuming Stickmount works with the Moto G, getting it all up and running is simply case a dropping the binaries linked on Stickmount's description on Google Play into the root directory of your SD card and installing the app. Installing both binaries provides exFAT support too, which is handy.
That USB OTG Helper would not work for NTFS because it relies upon NTFS support being enabled in the kernel, which it isn't on the stock Moto G kernel. You need a FUSE based solution -- i.e. ntfs-3g, or Paragon's alternative.

Stickmount looks great. Drop the binaries, install and go. Is someone willing to try it with any NTFS or exFAT drive? Does unmounting the OTG unmount the SD card also? My G won't come until a couple of weeks if I order it now
Btw, should Stickmount also work for the microSD if I use an NTFS one?
Thanks for the replies

I'd test it now, but I don't have time to backup and restore after unlocking the bootloader. I need my phone for work during the week. Why Motorola have to force a format of /data after unlocking the bootloader, I don't know. Maybe it's a deterrent of sorts. Most of my media is stored on EXT4 formatted media, anyway...
Stickmount likely ignores the SD card. It might be possible to mess around with config files to mount an ntfs formatted sd with ntfs-3g, but I wouldn't recommend it, as ntfs will be slower than most other filesystems. Interestingly, the Moto G has an f2fs formatted /data partition, which is very suitable for SDHC and could probably be enabled for the actual SD card without too much hassle, but I digress....

I had dramas with getting my previous SD card to work (probably just a dud in the end, though it was also damn slow..), though I did at one stage get an NTFS-formatted SD card to mount, but the card corrupted itself in the process.
I'm curious to see if we may see F2FS support for the Moto G 2014, it's pretty handy on other devices, and I'm sure if we were able to have F2FS formatted SD cards, that would make life far nicer in general. Would need a custom kernel that supports it fully though, AFAIK the current offerings don't have too much going, though I haven't tried it yet.
As for the OP's question, I was able to connect my NTFS USB3 HDD up to my Moto G 2014 without much hassle, obviously there's little by way of solutions that don't require root access though, but such is the nature of the beast when the system doesn't support mounting anything outside of FAT32 out of the box. Have used Paragon and Stickmount with reasonable success, but I do feel you when it comes to wanting to at least have something else power the drive first.

F2FS has already been backported to 3.4 by Motorola. It is present in the stock kernel; the F2FS formatted data partition on the Moto G/X doesn't just mount itself by magic! I doubt F2FS would offer much, if any, performance benefits over FAT32, but it does however support file sizes over 4GB and preserves file permissions. I presumed these are the reasons that Sakura would choose an NTFS formatted SD over a FAT32 formatted one. Whether vold hacks or just plain fstab edits would be required, I don't know.

I just discovered the commits that extend vold filesystem support to F2FS in the Cyanogenmod repos. So the best route to NTFS/exFAT/F2FS formatted SD cards would clearly be a solid Cyanogenmod release for this device.

So Stickmount does work? Great. I have to root anyway, since the the Moto G has no Japanese UI it will always show Chinese characters, I have to manually edit the fallback_fonts.xml of the system to give Japanese ones priority.
Back to filesystems... so it's *only* FAT? No ext either? Even being a Linux file system and all? Damn. I searched a little and found an ext driver for Windows. Works nice and now I happily have an ext2 flash drive working seamlessly in Win 7.
F2FS looks nice, but like its Wiki entry says "Planned: Windows driver supporting F2FS".
And yes, I need something that has at least a 16 GB file limit (ext2 has it even when using 1 KB clusters).
P.S.: It's all very funny when you see that FAT32 was introduced in 1996 and ext2 in January 1993, yet ext2 appears to be superior in every way. Well, NTFS is from 1993 too. Older than I thought. Why are we stuck with the worst FS of all? Almost 2015, 128GB on something as tiny as a microSD card and 4GB maximum file size

Totally! It's lame that Google don't directly provide support for EXT2/3/4 filesystems on removable media. It's worth noting that the Moto G only supports SDHC up to 32GB, according to the spec sheets. I had another look at USB OTG Helper and it does now support ntfs-3g too. Binaries are available on the homepage and must be installed on the system partition. Both it and Stickmount support EXT2/3/4, of course.
The solution to lack of filesystem support and antiquated native filesystems is to ditch Windows!

Nice work
*IF* your phone can be mounted in windows as a fixed (non-removable) drive, you can partition it within windows. My custom ROM gives me the option to mount as a non-removable device. You don't have to format as ext2, the installer did that for me, you just have to create two RAW 256MB partitions.
That said, this method is a lot easier, I just couldn't do it with my netbook!
Didnt know that you could jsut create 2 partitions of RAW unallocated partitions without formatting and the installer will do it for you.
You could still do it on a netbook if you download Paragon Partition Manager.
That is a windows program, so if you dont have a dvd drive you could use Paragon.
Also you could get a flash drive and make that flash drive bootable with Gparted.
nice video, very professional. Partitioned my 2gb card with Gpart and it couldn't have been easier, thanks
now for your next video could you show how to make a USB connection with the android vogue to win 7?

Lol thanks man.
Funny thing is i havent been able to get a USB Connection with windows 7... (cause i havent looked too much into it)
Ill try to find some time this weekend and figure it out.
And i hope i can fulfill your video tutorial request
Could you post some text instructions on the .conf file?
I have some questions regarding the performance factors of the different settings, like using compcache with a hero build. Is the backing swap for compcache using the 2nd ext2 partition? What are the options you need to enable to use that 2nd partition as swap? That's all I'm curious about, but feel free to expand.

thanks, no hurry tho it's been mostly laziness on my part, I've read through the forums took lots of notes I just need to get it done
But the USB connection imo is the hardest part of switching to android on the vogue, at least so far.
I think i'll try out jamezelle's SenseTATTOO 1.0 that will give me the motivation to get it working.
Ha Ha Ooops
so i was up late last night so i figured i'd finally get around to partitioning my sd card for android and saw this post and figured cool. It was a great tutorial and if i had been a little more alert i would have probably paid attention more. I ended up wiping the hardrive of my computer totally unaware of what my stupid headwas doing. So it marked the end of my procrastination of upgrading to win 7. After i got everything back up and running I finally paid attention and was able to partition my card. thank you for the time and effort you put into this video. it was info i couldn't find with what little time i had. I just thought i'd let you know. that if your stupid like me maybe gparted is dangerous for you
thx for the vid.
Mac users: just use disk utility, pretty straight forward. back up your microsd first though, it wipes it.

I think you're "loading gparted while in windows 7".....Rather than bootin from Gparted.
You have to get your computer to boot from the cd.....
so you have to restart your computer with gparted in the drive.
Side Note:
Normally when you turn on ur computer, the computer boots from your hard drive. Your hard drive has windows on it; and therefore boots windows.
You want to have your computer boot from Gparted (off the cd) and not boot from your hard drive (Windows 7)
Solution:
You have to Restart your computer
Hopefully Gparted Gets loaded
If it doesnt its because the BIOS on your computer set Boot Priorities to Boot From the CD. This should definately work (100% sure).
lol ok thanks...I'll try soon.
And how do we "use" the multiple partition system?
Does it need a new data.img file?
Thanks!
it's for running android from a sd card, the installer will move files to the ext2 partitions for faster access and better performance
Well, the question was "how to", not "what it does"
But nevermind, found it!
i did everything with paragon..when i put my sd card on my kaiser tilt it wats to format..and then when i put it back in my computer it wants to format again.
I am using an micro sd adapter and paragon partition..
do i neccarly have to use EXT2? or can i just run it off formated fat 32

Yes you need it to be Ext2. Ext2 is something recognizable in linux.
Android recognizes this too and I believe it needs the Ext2. I think if you were to create 3 partitions of Fat32 it would not help the performance.
Android usually copies the files over to the Ext2 Partitions, and if it doesnt detect an Ext2, it wont copy any files anywhere; thus the performance isnt as great.
I had this problem when i was trying to format my sd card for the first time.
Everytime i would plug my sd card back into my phone my phone wanted to format it.
I figured out that i did the partitions wrong. I re did it (the method shown in the video) and i was able to plug it (the sd card) back into my phone with no error message.
So what im basically saying is you may have done it wrong.
I wish i could remember what i did wrong so i can help you correct it and do it right but it was a while ago i dont remember in great detail. All i know is when i tried it again (the correct way) it worked perfectly.
Here is a screenshot of what your card should look like. (may differ slightly in paragon's partition manager)
ok i have successfully made 2 ext2 partitions at the right size.
What all can i do with this?
Can i now install apps to my sd card?
What is the process of doing this?
Also, i can no longer get my sd card to show up on my computer with automount or sd split widget
Im running Myns rls4 on nand.

[webtop] webtop2sd discussion (currently version 2.0.1)

Note: Please keep this thread restricted to Bionic-specific issues. Atrix (and general) webtop2sd issues should be discussed in this thread instead. Threads for other devices are referenced at the top of the main webtop2sd thread.
Discuss webtop2sd here (the other thread will be kept clean for announcements, FAQs, etc.).
Before you report an issue:
Make sure it's not on the Known Issues list first!.
Basic debugging, since these are going to be questions I ask anyways:
If you hit problems with the Android webtop2sd application, you'll need to tell me the error, and give me the last few lines of adb logcat. Run this adb command, which will filter out most of the unimportant lines:
adb logcat ActivityManager:i AndroidRuntime:i webtop2sd:i *:s
Are you actually booting from your SD card? You can find this out by checking the Diagnostics tab in webtop2sd, under "Currently mounted webtops". If webtop isn't listed, you're not booted from your SD card. If this is the case, report what ROM you're running from.
Don't worry about webtop-configurator on the Droid Bionic for now. The current version won't work, but the next version will.
Note: One of the early updates will involve being able to create a filesystem file in /data so that you don't need an SD card (something that was present in earlier versions of my scripts but ended up being impractical for the Atrix, but is quite practical for the Bionic).
Thanks to tallnerd1985, who made this port possible.

Hell, since our phone is so much better than the Atrix as far as storage space goes, we will not need to use our slow sdcards, we can use part of the 8gb of internal memory for the Webuntu partition.
you know, I'm glad you said that. I was hoping we could change that partition. Use up some of that extra space.

Sorry, but somebody else is going to have to figure out how to repartition the internal memory. That's one of those things that I'm not going to touch with a 20-ft pole....
The main reason I don't want to use /mnt/sdcard for a file is that it will then cause some pretty severe problems if you ever try to mount that from a computer (since Android won't be able to unmount /mnt/sdcard, since the filesystem file is still in use). I suppose if you wanted to guarantee that you would never, ever want to get to contents of /mnt/sdcard over USB, maybe, but that's not something I'd want to try to enforce.
so back to the sdcard-ext partition.
out of curiosity, how large are you making the webuntu partition?

Would it be possible to install the system partitions to /osh and have /usr and /home on the

afaik, internal memory is going to be a fair amount faster than an SD card. Also, /home is a symlink to /data/home, so it wouldn't end up on the SD card anyways. At that point, /osh/usr is going to be most of /osh, so you might as well just have all of /osh live on the SD card.

SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 10 Formatting

Just got the card for my i9305 and need advice from you guys formatting it. I'll usually put game files, music video, movies etc in it and I don't really see any file that could be larger than 4GB (if there are do give me an example). Now my question is what should I format it to? FAT32? NTFS? exFAT?. I'd probably go with exFAT cuz then you can put files larger than 4GB but I've heard that exFAT has issue getting the file corrupted and read many people complaining about it in this forum. NTFS can also consume files larger than 4GB but I've never heard anyone formatting it to NTFS. Now FAT32 is what most people are preferring. What do you guys think? Please explain this issue briefly so that I can take a decision.
Thank You!!

exFAT vs. FAT32; exFAT always wins. And you can't be sure that you can read NTFS in Android.

I think what you're talking about is people switching from Samsung-based ROMs to AOSP-based ROMs. Microsoft is charging licensing fees for exFAT drivers, and while there are open source drivers available, none of them can be included in Linux or Linux-based projects (at least not in any official manner *hint* *hint*) due to patents that Microsoft have on the exFAT filesystem. The result of this is that people think their stuff is gone because Android reports it as uninitialised or corrupted, when in reality Android simply can't read it. Current CyanogenMod kernels (and I think Samsung-based as well) have FUSE support, which is a requirement of the current open source implementations *hint* *hint*.

that was really informative and useful thank you. I just didn't know that was the reason behind peoples complaining. Now I'm gonna have to ask you again...I know a very little or almost nothing about samsung's way of development, fuse support, microsoft charges etc etc cuz I've been a sony user for a very long time and this is my first change. so If I format my sd card to exFAT and install AOSP based rom then my file system is tend to be corrupted? is there any way to make my android read the data after I install AOSP based rom?

Yes, definitely, but I personally do not know how, you will have to look around, it might be difficult. I would suggest looking at how PhilZ custom recovery works, it has exFAT support.
If you simply install an AOSP-based (like CyanogenMod) without modifications you will not be able to read an exFAT formatted card at all.

ah way too much hassle to find out how exFAT works on different roms besides I'll be changing roms quite a lot as I love to play around with my phone...I think I'll just go for FAT32 for now besides what could possibly be larger than 4GB if I'm only gonna put all the regular stuff like music, movie, games etc? anyway could you please tell me how to format it to FAT32? cuz mine is formatted to exFAT by default and I don't see any option in my pc to format it to FAT32, it's just NTFS and exFAT.

I am assuming you are using Windows as Linux and OS X do not hide the option to use FAT32. Open a command prompt (cmd) and type "format /FS:FAT32 X:", where X is the drive letter of your SD card.

Your problem is your allocation size that is the problem with FAT32 when larger than 32GB, that is a big problem with MS standart software; it can't do it.
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm is what you need and remember with large allocation sizes you don't want to but small files on the drive.

I tried the GUI app once before and it formatted my sd card to FAT32 instantly then I put it in my s3 and it recognized the card too then I formatted the card using my s3 again just to make sure it stays at FAT32 and lol it's gone back to exFAT again. Is this normal?
One more question when I start the gui it gives me several allocation unit size 512 to 65536 what should I select? Also after I format my sd to FAT32 will it behave normally? (I mean this was ridiculously fast while I mentioned the windows one took 3 hours lol) can I fill it up till the last bit? If the phone recognize the SD it means I won't have any problem with installing and rom or anything right?

Look at "format /?" in a command prompt. It will tell you all the flags you can use, there should be one for quick format. And there are numerous programs which do this, just Google it.
Try EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.1 Home Edition
There's a newer version but I used 9.1.1, you can get it from filehippo.com.
If you delete the partition in a partition manager software, do not try to format with Microsoft Windows Disk Management.
This can damage the drive!
Default cluster size is 32kB for 32GB to 2TB

Yeah... do not use EASEUS Partition Master. There are, as I said, numerous much much simpler softwares that can do this, not to mention the fact that "format" can do everything you want, given the correct arguments.

CM12, TWRP, exFAT or NTFS read/write for OTG

Been googling this for the last couple days, trying various things, not having luck yet. I want one flash drive for my large media and writeable for TWRP backups.
I'm running CM12 nightlies and the latest TWRP, have installed Stickmount. I have a 256GB USB flash drive and an OTG cable, and want to use the flash drive to play music and videos, as well as write nandroid backups in TWRP. I can read off the drive (currently formatted NTFS, and has my 130GB+ music collection on it, plus 50GB of videos so far).
The rub is I have videos that are larger than 4GB, so I think I need either NTFS or exFAT as my file system on the flash drive... but I haven't figured out how to have TWRP and ES File Explorer write to the drive.
What are others doing? Really would prefer to avoid having an NTFS/exFAT drive for media, and a second FAT32 drive for TWRP backups.
NTFS is Microsoft proprietary. Although some devs and OEM implement it in kernels and ROMs, I don't think you'll get it in recovery.

I totally get it. So, what filesystem could I use for both TWRP and Lollipop that can support files larger than 4GB?

Not sure... Does it support ext4
Otg with NTFS is possible if ntfs-3g driver is included in the twrp build

I'd appreciate some help... Exfat/NTFS and stuff

So I'm kinda new to this rooting thing. Currently on my first rooted phone, and have been loving the experience.
But I've run into an issue that I'm not sure how to solve. My phone doesn't support exfat or NTFS for portable storage SD cards. And the files I keep are too big for fat32 to handle.
I know I can format as internal shared storage and use ext4 that way, but I really hate how internal shared storage encrypts everything on the SD. I don't want to tie the data on my SD card to the lifespan of my phone, or to the lifespan of however long before I do a factory reset.
Is there a way to change what os my phone runs in order to move to something that supports exfat? And if so, can you please give me a noob friendly way of how to do that?
Supposedly this Kernel is supposed to give exFAT support when used with a Magisk module.
P.S., where this is your first time ROMming and such, some quick tips: Make sure you flash everything on a high charge (80% or higher), and through a USB you're not worried about having any frays or anything. I'll always use the nicest, newest USB I have just to play it safe. Razer specifically states on their site that the cable included with the phone 2 is NOT intended for flashing any files -- only for massive power passthrough. It's also always a good idea to keep a backup / original image somewhere handy in case **** hits the fan... because believe me, you'll brick your OS one day, and it'll be nice to have a quick fix so you're not out a phone. Feel free to PM if you've got any other general Root/ROM questions!
