So, BF came and I shot me a verizon unlocked xt1096 somewhat foolishly expecting that unlocked means fully unlocked.....means I can do with it what I want.
Not getting gang raped like the Apple crowd.
But it seems like I was wrong. After some days of just playing around with the new phone and still using my Note2 (rooted) I went ahead and made the full switch........
and got kicked in the balls when I realized that some of my beloved progs won't work because, the thing has a locked bootloader (wtf??) and can't be rooted (another wtf).
Now, I really wonder why this is, since I paid for the phone in full that I can not do with it what I want.
Maybe I am stupid (easily possible) but I don't get this. Can someone please explain why this is that way?
Thanks
K
probably stupid.
Verizon sells SIM unlocked devices. What you want is bootloader unlocked which is only possible on the pure edition devices which only work on At&t or T-Mobile in the states.
Caveat emptor.
Unlocked sim is not the same as unlocked bootloader........ two very different things
You have a logic error there. I bought it from Motorola NOT Verizon. So why does Verzion have control over a piece of equipment I bought from somewhere else?
Just because they "allow" me to pay them for their services?

I am growing pretty tired about that kind of BS in this country. Maybe I was to cradled by consumer protection laws in Europe, but I seriously doubt that kind of BS would fly in Europe.
I had a oneplus one and sold it because Tmobile didnt cover me....... I was with Verizon for 4 years under contract. SO I thought this way I get a better deal......
I really don't understand why Motorola plays that kind of ****.

Yes, you were coddled by EU laws, welcome to freedom bro. The ONLY way to get a better deal with Verizon is to never have any form of contact with them, don't even make eye contact with the stores when you pass. :good:
You entered into a voluntary contract and should have read the conditions before signing.
You know, if my clients would be ok with smoke signals and emails, I would....but damn...sometimes those bad people want to talk to me.....

What do you mean? I should have asked Motorola if they lock the bootloader in the name of the all so mighty overlord Verizon?
Sorry, but I think if I buy a factory unlocked phone, I should receive a unlocked phone. A phine that is free of the antics and bs of Verizon.
Thats why I opted out of my contract and went with a prepaid solution. Where I bring my own phone.
What nerves me most here, is that everyone takes the dry as* screwing like it is normal that you get drilled up the backside high and dry.
Where is the outcry? Is really everyone so commercially ironed out and conformed that we can be handled like money suppliers that bring their cash anyway?
Please don't answer, I really fear to hear many "yes" or even worse, if you don't like it go back to Europe.
I don't see what the problem is. Your money speaks your opinion. Cancel your service with verizon and switch to T-Mobile or at&t where you can use a PE. Or buy a nexus 6 (which can be unlocked on Verizon). The web has a vast amount of info on any phone you ever plan on buying.
you are overseeing one crucial point. I bought the phone from Motorola. NOT from Verizon. I bought it outside of a contract. I bought it unlocked.
And still Verizon has power over a phone they shouldn't have.
The problem with other providers around here is, that they don't have coverage......

You still bought a Verizon branded phone. Verizon doesn't care about whether or not you are on contract, what they care about is that you are on their network. They want to have full control of every device that's on their network, plain and simple. I understand your frustration but it's not like a precedent is being set here- this is how it's always been. Not trying to drive salt in the wound here but had you done your due diligence and researched prior to purchase, you could have avoided this little surprise. As I said, this is nothing new, unfortunately.

When you buy a Verizon-branded phone from Best Buy do you still wonder why Verizon's software is on it? You didn't buy it from Verizon, you bought it from Best Buy!

As far as I know, it is impossible to buy any variant of the Moto X 2014 that comes with an unlocked bootloader. Secondly, Motorola only marketed the Pure Edition Moto X (GSM) as being bloat-free. Motorola (or any other manufacturer for that matter) will never sell a CDMA phone that is not carrier-branded as all of the major CDMA carriers will only activate their own carrier-branded phones.
sorry but your statement is void. I bought from the maker. Not a reseller.

Hi All,
I am curious regarding phones which are being sold for low prices on sites like Ebay labeled as Bad ESN. What i have read so far a Bad ESN phone cannot be used in the same country. Since i live in India, is it possible to use such phones in a different country. Also if yes would it only apply to Global phones or any CDMA Device.

The reason a phone likely has a bad ESN is it has been reported as lost or stolen. The US carriers blacklist the phone so it cannot be used. This is also sometimes from when someone skipped out on a ETF fee. Most of the time the phone was at one time sold by someone who didn't have the right to sell it. Sure there's exceptions, but the majority of stolen phones in the US end up overseas for this reason.
I don't know that there is any guarantee that a phone with a bad ESN will work for you. I personally wouldn't trust let along support people selling these devices, but I suppose that's your call.

Bad ESN is carrier specific. And is blocked on the carriers end. The phone remains untouched. Example: Verizon moto x gets banned on verizon, but it can still be used on gsm carriers. Assuming the.moto x u buy supports the right frequencies in your area you should be fine.

So the phone will work in countries that don't use this USA blacklist, but I assume Motorola will not allow to unlock the bootloader of a phone with bad ESN?
As a result you won't be able to install updates on your phone? Or am I wrong in this.
To save a few bucks I don't think it's worth it. Also the moral factor...phone probably stolen.
Spend a bit more and get a clean phone.

Im not 100% sure, but since the Verizon moto is unlocked so even if has a bad esn, you could use it overseas if the bands in india match what bands are supported by the verizon moto x
If the price for a clean phone is too much....get a Moto g....hear great things about it.
Seriously...buying a stolen phone with a bad esn just seems ridiculous.

I don't think any Moto X has an unlocked bootloader by default. Some providers leave you the choice to unlock trough the motorola website, but I would assume the motorola website won't allow to unlock a bad esn phone?
kj2112, not every bad esn phone is a stolen phone. Switching providers without paying the termination fee, billing issues with provider,... will also lead to a bad esn. I wouldn't mind buying a phone like that for use in another country given the seller has evidence to back up his story.

Im not talking about the bootloader. Im talking about Sim card. All Verizon 4G LTE phones come factory unlocked so could use them on any gsm carrier if the bands matched. So even if the Carrier blacklisted the phone, its would still work on other carriers

I think buying phones with bad ESNs (blacklisted) should not be allowed in the US (or elsewhere). People get mugged, beaten, stabbed and sometimes killed for smartphones these days because people can still sell these stolen phones on eBay to be used overseas. Some countries are actually running ads on national TV networks calling them "blood phones" since many of them were taken from the owners by physical force. Each time a person knowingly (or unknowingly) buys these phones they are indirectly supporting such type of behavior.

I don't know this system in my country, but from my point of view this US system is seriously flawed if they put phones from people who don't pay their termination fee or have some billing issue on the same blacklist as phones that were taken with force by criminals...
If the operators were really serious about stopping phone theft with this blacklist, only true 'blood phones' should be on this list.At the moment it looks more like another opportunity to up their revenue stream rather than provide a service to society.

So you can walk into a store...get a phone with zero down on a contract...then never pay them a penny and sell the phone? And enjoy your new found riches while you ignore their threatening letters to pay?
Doubt that will happen.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
I'm absolutely not saying it's ok to (try to) rip of your provider, I'm only saying that you can't put these issues on the same level as robbery with or without violence. As long as you mix all these types up, you won't be able to create a legal basis to completely ban the bad ESN phones, as is the case now.
They can and the have.. weather you don't pay your bill or kill 100 people to steal a phone...either way they kill the phone. As they should. LOL
How is that a cash grab for them? They don't want stolen phones used....basically not paying your bill and keeping the phone is stealing too...so bye bye esn.
Anyone risking it and buying one is ridiculous. Pay a bit more for one that will work without question ....or buy a different phone that you can afford.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
Whether the phone is blacklisted due to it being stolen or taken by force(sometimes lethal) or due to not paying your dues - either way those buying phones with bad ESN are indirectly supporting this behavior - which is stealing.
A phone can get a bad ESN if it's reported lost or stolen, as may have said prior. I think it's fine buying a phone with a bad ESN so long as the phone was reported lost by the owner, they somehow found it, and are now selling it. How often does this happen, I can't say for sure. Are most phones being sold with a bad ESN stolen? The chances are high. As far as phones that got a bad ESN because the owner didn't pay their ETF, I guess that's up to the buyer. I personally wouldn't buy one like that.
I am getting ready to order a couple of X's for my wife and me. I have a couple of questions....
We are with at&t. Is there a difference between the at&t branded ones and the GSM dev models? I have Googled this, but I am still confused as to whether there are hardware differences which would make the dev model less useful on at&t and whether there is bloat on the at&t model....
We have a SG4 and an iPhone 5 which still under contract which we will keep as spares for the family. I assume that we can buy the X at&t branded through Moto Maker without a contract? and just stay on the plan?
Thank you. I have spent hours on this and I am still confused, probably because it keeps changing....

the developer edition are unlocked and u can unlock ur bootloader without losing ur warranty
being unlocked u can use with other carriers
if u buy at&t u can use only with at&t
if u want a phone that u can use with gsm carriers and with other carriers take or a developer edition or a unlockable one without contract
I got the T-Mobile unlockable (and unbranded!) version from Motomaker off-contract. Works great on AT&T and it beat paying the extra dough for a developer edition, since it's practically the same damn thing! (I also don't care about voiding warranty having unlocked my bootloader. I take care of my phone. If warranty is something you desire, then go dev edition or stick with your current carrier's version).

I'm pretty sure the developer edition is the same price as the moto maker version so it won't cost any "extra dough." And it doesn't matter how well you care for your phone. That's not what a warranty is for. It covers failures NOT caused by the user. You could wrap your phone in bubble wrap, never flash a third party app, and only use it under tightly controlled environmental conditions, insuring the phone is never exposed to any abuse, and a part could still fail, thus necessitating the use of the warranty. Which you voided by unlocking the boot loader on a non-developer edition.
You can pick either the AT&T branded one, the T-Mobile variant, or the unlocked. The T-mobile is actually unbranded, SIM unlocked and has no carrier apps.
I'm in the same boat still in contract with AT&T and purchased the T-Mobile one to leave my options open to switch to T-Mobile later and be able to purchase SIM cards for use abroad without having to fight the death star to get an unlock code.

I dont believe anyone has the AT&T variant in hand, but if history has taught us anything its that AT&T will have it locked down.
AT&T will 99.99% lock the bootloader on the S5. They stated they will lock the bootloaders: "To ensure a safe and consistent experience on your wireless device, we do not support unlocked bootloaders."
I just wish T-Mobile would improve in my area because they are doings things right. Like selling the 32GB S5.

This time around it looks like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will have S5 with locked bootloader
AT&T started with S4 and continued the tradition there after (G2, N3 etc.)

LokiDoki was bad ass lol. I had kept it on my s4 all the way to the end. Everyone kept saying there would be another exploit, but there never was. The AT&T S4 doesn't see much development nowadays. Safestrap is good, but not the same. Maybe there will be a developer who can actually UNLOCK the bootloader instead of finding a way around it. These devices have become so hard to root, flash, and restore to stock with these locked bootloaders. Glad T-Mobile is getting in for the fun. It's almost sickening how much they publicly hate AT&T and Verizon, then they go and lock the S5 bootloader just like them.

Im guessing T-mobile started because people were buying their devices for use on AT&T because of the unlocked bootloader. They dont make money on the devices they make it on the service and locked bootloaders will discourage this practice. My theory, not fact.

Wasn't that T-Mobile's official twitter account? Anyway, I hope it is unlocked because everyone has the right to do what they want with their phone, as they own it. As an AT&T customer who used the T-Mobile Note 3, I can tell you that I will not be doing that again in the future. T-Mobile's Note 3 fully supported all of AT&T's bands, but I found LTE reception to be very bad. It was awful in places with low signal, and often would sit on HSPA+.
But my flashing days are over with. I pay for my devices at full price, and I won't risk bricking it with these very hard rooting/flashing procedures. Its just too risky nowadays. Maybe I got spoiled with the easy rooting/flashing methods we had before.
Back to the bootloader... I can see them locking it for the reason that many bought their device for use on AT&T. If the S5 bootloader is locked on T-Mobile then that's a shame. Looks like the "uncarrier" just made a selfish "carrier" move.

I honestly don't know if that was an Official Tmobile Tweet or not - I guess I do wear rose colored glasses - always half full and all of that. I purchased a preorder of the S 5 so I will find out soon enough - if it is locked I will probably return it.
One reason I can think of that t mobile has decided to lock bootloader (if they have) is to cut down on the amount of returns they get from people who brick their device and then return it for a new replacement, hiding the fact that they were rooted or whatever. We may have become o our own worst enemy. I don't knnow how many hundreds - maybe thouhsands of phones have been returned at one time or another from someone claiming the phone was broken when in reality it was bricked because they tried something they shoulnd't have - or flashed a bad file or whatever. If you consider their side of things - you can understand why they might want to plug that hole....
regardless - I am a flashaholic - it is a disease - I need help desperately - lol - but seriously - I do hope we find that these are just rumours and that Tmobile has taken the high road and kept our phones open and "flashable"

Will they sell develper editions of the S5? Like the S4? I havent seen any for sale yet. I really dont want to shell out $600 for a phone just so i can customize it.. Might as well wait on the Nexus 6:crying: or maybe i will jump ship to the New one m8 google edition (even tho imo its ugly and still costs alot of $$)

The standard AT&T HTC m8 version has been confirmed to have an unlockable bootloader via the htc dev tool if you are concerned about having to buy off contract.
This is why I'm only buying Google edition phones now.

And an S-OFF tool has been released...the phone can now be fully and completely unlocked.
Combine that with a microSD slot and I'm hitting AT&T tomorrow like a fat kid through a cookie store.
Get em while you can!
Can only find it on mobile phones direct, an online only retailer. And they're taking forever to ship it, and pretty much lied to me about their stock.
So does anyone in the UK know anywhere stocking it? This phone seems so damn hard to get a hold of
I haven't seen it on any network anywhere. I heard P4U had an exclusive on it, but since they've gone bang.....
Yea I think that's what's screwing us over here, the phone seems to be stuck in limbo.
I ended up ordering it via mobile phones direct, they've told me it would be here tomorrow everyday for a week now. Initially was meant to be here last friday. Rung up today and they've told me it is delayed for a week. Could really do with someone else selling it
Clove have them SIM-free:

Yea I'm after a contract
Still no news on the Moto X being on any network. I can't really dish out the nearly £500 for the 32GB
Has anyone heard anything?
Mobilephonesdirect.co.uk are the only provider I've found so far, received mine a couple of days ago
I find it really strange after all the good reviews of this phone, its like the networks are shunning Motorola. I've had online chats with o2 and I've had responses usually worded "we have no updates for this device" I wish they'd just give a yes/no about if its coming soon or not

I spoke with EE who is my provider and they said that they had no idea if they would get the phone because Motorola phones do not sell well (with them).
I played with the Z3 on Wednesday and REALLY liked it. It would have been better if it was close to pure android BUT given the unfortunate circumstances with the lack of availability from the Moto X, I will be purchasing the Z3 this weekend.
I think the networks are missing a trick here, some people are after a stock android experience and the size of the nexus 6 will put some off so will be wanting a device like the moto x.

I was one of those who was put off by the size of the Nexus 6. Maybe it is Motorola's interest to push the Nexus before its other phones?!

I was going to hold off for the Nexus 6, but after looking around I decided I don't want a handset of that size.
The New Moto X (2014) really took my fancy and my brother bigged up the Moto X (2013) so after a lot of hunting around on the net and trying to get the New Moto X as an upgrade from my service provider with no luck as they haven't heard of it.
I found Mobile Phones Direct on the net and placed my order a few days ago. It arrived yesterday and I unlocked the bootloader (followed guide on Motorola website) straight out of the box and then once loosely set up I rooted it (followed the guides in this forum) to bring back the exposed goodness that I love.
The phone looks great and feels great in the hand, love rooted stock KitKat with exposed.

Can I ask is there any network branding on it? Mines coming Monday on EE, also from Mobile phones direct. I figured (hoped) as none of the networks seem to be offering it themselves MPD might just be selling the SIM free model with a contract
Hello there,
No branding or bloatware on the phone at all.

Excellent, thanks for that... Just what I was hoping you would say
Does that mean that mobilephonesdirect sells the pure edition? In spite of their nice price, I would hate ending up with a locked bootloader at the end

Going by model number (XT1092 Europe, Asia) its not a Pure Edition (XT1095) but according to the table at this link:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X_(2nd_generation) its SIM Unlocked.
The bootloader was easily unlocked by following the guides in this forum and on the Motorola website (did it as part of my first boot up)
Then rooted after basic set up.
So I just got a nexus 6 on Craigslist and it says Motorola confidential property: not for sale. I tried activating it on Verizon but all I get is voice calls because it is Sim locked to at&t. I tried to get the unlock code from them but they said the phone doesn't exist. Currently I'm waiting for a third party to get the code but I have a feeling they will fail. Any ideas?
I attached a photo with the m in the top corner so you know it's real.
i have yet to see a MCP phone unlocked. does not mean you cant, just haven't seen anyone able to yet.. Those MCP phones get out, but are not supposed too. maybe trade someone who's on att for theirs? IDK that sucks! sorry
If I don't get it unlocked do you think anyone here would want it for development purposes?
Sell it on swappa.com. There's a separate sub-section for AT&T versions of the Nexus 6. But full disclosure, so the buyer knows what they're getting.
I talked to a Motorola agent and this is what he said
Got a code from eBay and unlocked my att nexus. It cost like 8 bucks..Took about 18 hours to get code..Does each nexus have a different unlock code ? I got a code from att but never used it cause I had already used eBay code..

Let this be a lesson to you about buying crap from craigslist.
Next time, go to play store, motorola, or tmobile to buy it. All unlocked, and even come with a WARRANTY.
Could you flash a factory image to it to see if its able to do that at least?

Test device. Prototype. Or for shop as demo unit. Flash it with proper firmware for Nexus first.
Would flashing the firmware do anything for the Sim lock?

No.

Lets look at your point from a different point of view;
IT COSTS LESS to buy the one INTENDED for him, then to be a cheapskate and end up buying multiple pieces of junk that don't work out.
You don't get rich by wasting money.
And finally;
NOBODY NEEDS a Nexus 6. If he's not rich, then maybe he should just buy a phone he can actually afford.
So buying second hand phones is a no no? Get a grip
You went to an ATT store to try to get an unlock, or by phone?
I say go by a store and see what the service techs there can do for you, while awaiting the code you paid for ...
As far as it being MCP, that has its ups and downs to me, the upside is that is's special, won't look like everyone elses.
The downside is that it may not be the same HW inside, which may hamper you in flashing the current image for it, or even future releases, but I'll allow for, and hope I'm incorrect there.
If you didn't, try a good store and talk to the service techs, not the sales reps.
Look on ebay for unlock code. Is imei starting from 0044 on it? If yes its prototype device.
