Well, looks like Samsung will indeed be sticking to its usual schedule of announcing new Galaxy S flagships in March and launching them in April. Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of the company’s mobile business, confirmed to Bloomberg that the Galaxy S5 would launch sometime in April, along with the second-generation Galaxy Gear (already hinted at by another Samsung exec.)
“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time,” Lee said. “When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.” He also mentioned that the Galaxy S5 would feature a radically different design with a focus on the display, as the lack of visual differences between the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4 were part of the reason why the latter didn’t sell as well as expected.
Lee also mentions that the company is looking at implementing iris/retina scanning technology for its next flagship, lending credence to the plethora of rumors that have been swirling around in the last few months. “Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology and we are studying the possibility,” said Lee; his words suggest that even if the Galaxy S5 doesn’t sport the iris scan feature, at least the Galaxy Note 4 could do so when it launches later this year.
The Galaxy S5 is expected to sport a QHD (2,560×1,440) 2K display, a Snapdragon 800 processor/64-bit Exynos processor, 3GB/4GB of RAM, 16-megapixel camera, and Android 4.4 KitKat. It is also expected to be the first Samsung flagship to have a metal construction, at least on one of its variants.

huh
I don't know how keen i am about retina scans for your phone. I have had eye surgery and really dislike the idea of stuff messing with my eyeballs.
I mean at one point you gotta ask yourself " how much security is to much?". I will stick with a pin number. Finger print scans, iris/retina, God only knows what is next?

So much for that retina scanner talk. Galaxy S5 was a disappointment. Good but still a disappointment.
Do you guys think that if we buy a Gear VR this year it will work with Note 5? I am considering buying the Nexus 6 now and then next year go all in Note 5 4k display with Gear VR. If we assume that one Gear VR will last a few future Notes I amy go Note 4 Developer Edition. PhoneArena "Samsung tipped prepping a 6" 4K AMOLED display with 700+ppi for next August, just in time for the Note 5" (Can't post links yet)
Whataya guys think?
thx,
riz
How do you know that the Note 5 will be 4K? Or are you just assuming?

Just rumors but I believe it will happen... PhoneArena stated "Samsung tipped prepping a 6" 4K AMOLED display with 700+ppi for next August, just in time for the Note 5" (can't post links yet)
So is the advantage of buying a Gear VR over a Oculus is the display can be upgraded, is this Gear VR adjustable to allow future sized/spec'd Notes? At $199 for Gear VR and 3-600 hundred for Notes, it better be BUY ONE Gear VR and have it work on FUTURE Notes RIGHT???

No the GEAR VR will only work with Galaxy Note 4 and will not be compatible with Note 5.
The Note 5 will most certainly have a TYPE C-USB plug(so bye bye micro usb)... For 4K display Samsung it is not certain they will be available for next year knowing that beside VR i do not see real use for that density on
a phone.
Also in some other thread it is hinted that Samsung is planning new revisions of this GEAR VR.
Look at the pros section of the gear vr.. No one can be sure but what devices come every 6 months?? Galaxy S and note devices..

Hi All:
If they deal with me as fear as they deal with Galaxy S6 / 6 Edge owners I wouldn't complain and I will wait patiently for the update to come, where Galaxy S6 / 6 Edge are getting nearly weekly updates and issue fix and nothing for other smartphones.
the problem for the Note 4 updates that they have to wait double time to make it compatible with the Gear VR !!!!!!
So Samsung think it is not a problem to let the majority of the Note 4 owners angry with Software full of bugs, to satisfy the few Gear VR kids.
I believe that we should push Samsung to change that miserable update policy and not to link Note 4 updates to Gear VR or anything else.
Samsung should deal with smartphones updates in equal way, they should understand that if I bought a Samsung device that will not be the end of the story and they can put me on hold as much as they wish.
Samsung should hear the voice of the people, and they should know the number of unsatisfied owners of Samsung smartphones (Note 4, Note 3 & Galaxy S5.....ect.
I think the way to go is by using social media , twitter & Facebook pages in different languages, to let Samsung & the future customers for Samsung to know that we are facing issues with Samsung software update policy, where they ignore their smartphone software after short time

Samsung doesn't really care about their customers...besides there aren't many people like us on XDA where we wait for the latest and greatest update.I wish they changed over these past years but they didn't.
Posting on social media won't make one single bit of difference they will not update the phone any quicker than they do now, one of the main reasons it takes longer to update the Note 4 is because there is alot more stuff within Touchwiz on the Note series than there is on the S series this takes longer to test and debug before they release it to the public unfortunately.
The S6 is brand new and with it being brand new it came with alot of critical bugs that need to be fixed asap, hence why your seeing more updates for the S6.
The Note 4 will get the updates it still a flagship you just have to be patient, if your not happy with Lollipop then switch back to Kitkat which was alot more stable and bug free than Lollipop currently is until the time comes they release 5.1 or 5.1.1.
Someone should make one like the qi receivers for the Note 4. I contacted Looppay who sells the MST cards but they only replied back the galaxy s6 and Note 5 has it built in.

I was literally researching this topic an hour ago... Here are my findings:
Samsung acquired LoopPay back in February 2015. LoopPay had a few products aimed at iPhones to give it contactless payment using MST.
2. LoopPay has 2 different products according to their site; MST sleeve for the iPhone 5/5s/6/6Plus and a standalone "card" that is programmable.
There is no official news that Samsung will provide a bolt-on accessory for other Samsung devices. My theory/hope is that there will be some kind of accessory in the near future for S5 and Note 4 devices to help boost the adoption rate of Samsung Pay. The pessimistic side of me thinks that Samsung bought LoopPay exclusively to leverage the MST patents and block any MST tech from ending up in Apple's future devices - a smart move, but has no plans to create any accessories for older Samsung devices nor license out the patents on MST to 3rd party accessory makers like NFC and Qi wireless charging accessories.
After years of dreaming, I can finally afford a used Galaxy s20+ 5G, specifically for Gear VR.
I'm new to Android, and a bit overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the info and mods available through the forums.
Seeing quite a few posts (all old) about Gear VR breaking makes me a little hesitant, but still excited about the possibilities.
Is anyone currently using a fully updated s20+ with Gear VR?
Should I avoid buying a unit with updates after a certain point?
edit: link to article successfully connecting s20 series to GearVR (in 2020).
Pretty sure I found the answer in this thread. Nothing past Android 11 OneUI 3.1.
