Root AT&T Moto X on 4.4.2?

I bought a used AT&T Moto X and it's on 4.4.2. Is it possible to root this (maybe through downgrading first), or do I need one of the unlocked versions of the phone?

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2

And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.

That said....return it now while you still can, and get a dev edition or another carrier that can be sim unlocked and work on at&t if that's who you're with.

Oh, so you definitely got the at&t model?? On a plan, or paid up front???
If on a plan, you could try to sell it anyway, and put that towards dev edition.....or live without root...or return it.

Ah good idea... selling it new.
Actually I'm not sure I need root. I only rooted my S3 to get rid of touchwiz, but this stock android might be ok. Only app I use that needs root is file manager and drivedroid. And I want to disable the camera shutter sounds
I'd like to put CM11 on there but looks like motox isn't well supported by CM anyway.

The Moto x definitely doesn't need to be rooted, but you may regret it later if you can't.

I wasn't planning on rooting this phone either, but then I came across Gravity Box. Sell the phone new and get an unlocked one.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.

Why are all pessimistic that manage to get root on a closed bootloader version from AT & T?
Why do these companies do not sell at least an opportunity to get open bootloader? What do they lose?

I bought my Moto X directly from Motorola (not subsidized from AT&T) for use with AT&T. I did not opt for the slightly costlier DEV model, so is this thread telling me my personal property cannot ever be unlocked to be used somewhere else?

Pretty much...
Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.

There are SOME radio differences but I agree it shouldn't matter.

Thank you, that is what I need to know. Now what about getting a S8 or S8 Plus instead? Are those rootable? I mean does it even matter any more? The only thing I really want root for is Youtube Ad Block, but what the crap, mine as well just pay 10 bucks a month and get Youtube Red and allow my phone to update it self all the time.

from what I hear it is possible to root the s8, but it limits your max battery charge to 80%? kinda a **** trade off if you ask me.
so I'm like you I thought I must have root, my last android was a Nexus with a completely unlocked boot loader and I flashed custom roms when I tired of my current rom. that was four years ago and I've been jailbroke iOS since. do you still need root?
most people will say no. if they say absolutely the main arguments I've heard are for xposed(which doesn't even work on android 7) and viper4android (or some similar name, a sound tweak I think) besides those two, removing bloatware, and hosts file ad blocking.
my personal experience: I will be giving up an unlocked boot loader by purchasing the note 8. this mean no custom roms. I haven't given up hope for a future possible root method, but I am willing to accept that it may never come or when it does we can only charge to 80% or something else ridiculous. I don't need root, I would like it, but I will compromise.
tldr;probably not, especially if you are willing to sub to YouTube red for 10$ a month.

The issue is that the Snapdragons have locked bootloaders but you need a SD version to use the Sprint network. It doesn't matter if you buy a Note 8 or an S8, the issue with the locked bootloader is the same.
For me personally, I need root because a lot of the apps I have use root. If you only wanted to block ads on YouTube, it's probably unnecessary and far more hassle than it's worth.

Sorry, I can't provide any guidance in this area. I'm in Australia and don't have experience with the inclusions/exclusions on specific American networks such as Sprint. I do know they use CDMA technology, which the Exynos SoC doesn't support.
Hopefully, one of the other enlightened souls on this forum can help you with this question.

I am on Sprint and am currently utilizing what I posted above as working...I am still finding out other working options as well...ask me about an option and I'll tell you if it is working on the unlocked version.

The Sprint Version will cut out the download booster and hot spot unless your plan includes it but include calling plus features which include their version of the Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Calling for surfing over calls....but we already have that with Wi-Fi calling...Sprint also has Bloat software such as VVM but I install Google Voice for voicmail...it is up to you...at this point I have found no function lost.
Oops...I forgot to mention that they may update more frequently or sooner

That is extremely important. Do I have this right? If I buy the unlocked version. Can I surf the internet while on the phone with the unlocked version from Amazon or Samsung or do I need to buy the Spring Version?

When I called my wife on Wi-Fi Calling i was able to surf the web as well...I'll double check tomorrow when she is awake though

I have the unlocked version arriving soon and I will be using it with sprint. (With the free 1 year promo)
AFIK only the sprint and unlocked versions are whitelisted to work on sprint. Any other snapdragon models you will need to request a manual request to add your IMEI to the sprint database.
And I believe the Exynos models isn't compatible with CDMA at all, something with licensing or patent issues with Qualcomm.

Oh I mean not on wifi - calling I am just talking about 4G LTE. I mean I have the note 3 right now. LOL. I know super old. I can talk on the cell network 4G LTE and surf the internet at the same time. Can you do that with the Unlocked Version and the Sprint Version or one or the other?

Are you serious. I will be giving up call over data? WHY? Is this like that for Verizon and AT&T? Have they all lost call over data or do they just not want you to be able to do it?

Hi All,
Can someone PLEASE explain me howcome the Exynos variant's bootloader is unlockable while his Snapdragon counterpart is not? was it made in purpose from Samsung's side?
Is this bootloader unlocking of the Snapdragon variant is "dead end" 100% and he who wants custom recovery (TWRP) on Note 8 should obtain ONLY the Exynos variant ?

This is my 2nd note and 4th galaxy
I only had Samsung's and they all were fully rooted with custom recovery.
This is the first and last time I buy cell phone with a locked bootloader i.e doesn't have TWRP option.
I don't need much TWRP as I need Xposed (although NAND backup could be very useful) but it seems they have a correlation.
I will sell this phone and buy the Exynos variant.

Yeah that's the best thing you could do. Honestly rooting and roms dien breed unfortunately. It hurts me to say that I am a die hard fan of it. I knew my model didn't have the best for root before I bought. Phone has the most sought after features.
I mean look at apple even copying a lot of samsung. That says something. I got my model because my carrier offered a more affordable payment plan then samsung. Once One plus catches up with samsung features that will be the phone to buy for sure.

Only if they stay true to the developement community.
Samsung used to be happy to support the developement community too, they had active representatives on our forums and every time a new phone came out, the new apps and feature that had been created here were suddenly incorporated into the new "Official Firmware"...
They even poached devs to work for them..
Then came KNOX and the end of Samsung support, though they do still seem to look for ideas to incorporate into their firmware for the latest devices at the best price to them, free...

That is definitely true. I remember having galaxy 1,2,3 and it was Rom heaven. I don't see One Plus going that route though. They started from the gate with Rom openness and listening.
I definitely think it's wrong how all the big phone makers turned there back on Rom community. Most of the great features phones have now days is because of developers. Then constraint that wtf?

Im happy without root. Since we can do so many tweaks woth ADB and we also have apps. Like disconnet pro or adhell which only works on samsung phones to remove ads on apps. (Hate those vpn software like blokada adguard etc). Other things like getting spotify apps free ads. Youtube app free ads can all be found here if u look for it. Not sure why i would need root now.

They know Roms can prolong the life of a phone and have features that the next device has. Of course they want you to buy over priced products every year.
Basically Androids turning into Apple. Google this if you will. Apple charges $1k for iphone x, yet only costs them $357 to make. That's incredible greedy returns.
Most of us at XDA know all this, but what can we do? We just say screw it and buy atleast the best android phone. You want root/rom? Stick to international/manufactured versions. Also make sure that international version has bootloader Unlock. Best bet is OnePlus latest phone for Root/Roms experience.

Alternatively can they not produce a "developer" edition of the Note 8 with no Knox at all and no locked bootloader?

I thought I bought an international one the SM-N950U1 is carrier unlocked. The irony is that I bought in the US to spare 100-200$ but where I currently live they sell the Exynos variant.
It's such a shame they (Samsung) doesn't give us the option to choose if want Knox or not. I'll try to sell my phone and buy a rootable with unlocked bootloader phone the Exynos variant is a possibility. They lost me as a devoted customer I can tell you.
Anyhow from what I understand the Exynos variant had an unlocked bootloader in the first place. No one had to nothing to unlock it.

Exynos only option. They won't do that because they hate unlocked bootloaders. I am amazed international version has unlocked bootloaders. Probably because they can't it's not carrier locked. Legal reasons as well guessing. Sure that pisses off the manufactures, lol @ them.

It's not just Samsung bro. Pretty much all of them do it. Like I said before always stick to international with phones for unlocked bootloaders. Gotta find which version is bootloader unlocked 1st. Because you get screwed like you did. Especially if you care about root/roms. I myself knew I'd be screwed before even buying snapdragon Note 8. But carrier had best affordable payment plans.
$200 down and $20 month. Plus able to jump to new phone anytime. Hard to say no to that. This phone pricing ability due to carrier and packed features. Made it easy to over look root/rom. I miss Roms dearly though. Idc what anyone says Roms poop on ANY stock.

Last Note with unlocked bootloader was the T Mobile Note 3 I owned.
I'm happy with stock N8 on tmo. Lots of "stuff" already can be done. I also use Substratum.

Roms have come a long way since Note 3 lol. Not try sound like a smart AO to you. But when was last time used a Rom? Bro for example Res remix is breathtaking with the features. My last phone had that Rom. Made stock look like a welfare case.
Not going to lie Samsung does have best stock IMO out of other stock androids.

Is there a point to rooting the snapdragon versions? I can only find 1 rom for it and I don't really see any benefit to doing it does anyone have advice on why they do it? Or what can be done with it?

As of a couple years ago the OS got mature enough (ie., not buggy) and the phones so much faster - really no need,!

Well, the people that root their devices, do it because they need it to especifically get/acquire the possibility to mod or install something they want, if you dont need something that requires root, I dont think you should root

typically i root for the ability to install xposed and mods but i dont see too many mods here that couldnt be installed w/o root and there arent any roms for snapdragon for some reason i was just wondering if theres anything in specific that i could do with the rooted phone that i couldnt with a non rooted one?

I bought the unlocked version and paid it all off, if I call Sprint they will unlock the bootloader???

No, they won't. They will carrier unlock it, but we can already do that.

If you think you need to root so desperately, then either buy an Exnos version, buy a Pixel, or a One plus, but whining on XDA about BL lock snapdragon Samsung phones is like peeing into the wind..nothing will come of it, except your face will get wet..

I'm not whining about it xD I'm asking what's possible to do with it, and I did buy an exynos version but exynos doesn't work on sprints network because they're only designed for gsm bands and not cdma, one plus screen is kinda terrible and that's a big thing for me and I have a pixel but with the pixel 3 coming out so soon it's kind of pointless to get a 2

so, you've basically answered your own question; the note 8, on your carrier, can't be effectively rooted to do what you want it to

As of now no and unless something changes in the future probably not. Its the reason I personally went out of my way to buy an exynos model.

Yeah unfortunately US snapdragons never seen root anymore, u need to buy an exynos version. I always research if a device can be rooted before buying.
