Any idea why the phone keypad input method insists on spaces? - Sprint HTC One (M8)

What I mean is when I try to select individual letters with the phone keypad in XT9 mode, it always puts a space between every letter. Like I'm the 3rd, so I use III a lot, but when I hit i and select it from the bar above the keypad, then the next time I hit i there's automatically a space, and I can't seem to make it stop doing it.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Any ideas at all? ^^;

Turn off auto corrrect?

Oddly, I can't seem to find that setting.
Sent from my 831C using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

If you are using the stock keyboard, I just tried it in XT9 because for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would still be using that keypad. And no spaces here. I hold down the GHI select I and do it 2 more times, no spaces.

I just can't figure it out. I think I had a problem like this with my M7, and I think someone helped me fix it, but I don't remember how. It really seems like there's settings that aren't being shown that should fix it.
Any chance there'd be a way to uncover more settings somehow?

Any more ideas? It's so annoying for this to be acting like this.

Sounds like when you choose the "i" in the upper bar, the phone thinks you're wanting it to just be an I and it automatically adds the space in preparation of the next word....what happens if you just type "iii"? It should realistically let you type that and then you can choose that combo to save in your phones dictionary. Hope that makes sense and helps you out...let me know
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app

I have the III saved so it does just put it in without spaces. It's any other time I have to add any word that bothers me. It shouldn't force a space when I go to spell some things by c h o o s i n g individual letters from the top bar. I've never had any other version of sense do that before, and it really feels like I'm missing a layer of settings for text input somewhere. It's just bothersome that I wouldn't be able to turn something like that on and off.
I've tried turning on and off the other settings in that field, and it didn't stop the spaces from auto adding. I actually have to add a space then backspace between every letter I need to individually choose.
Driving me batty, it is. lol
Sent from my HTC M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app.

I just tried to recreate what you're describing, I see how the space thing comes into play when choosing individual letters now...then I turned off word prediction and then it stopped adding a space but it also got rid of the top row with words/letters your currently typing...may I ask why you'd be typing individual letters and choosing them instead of just typing the word til it's completed? That's the only area I'm still confused about.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app

Sometimes there's things I type that aren't in the dictionary or my phone doesn't want to type "on" or "go" or other two letter words sometimes for no reason, then I have to type them with individual letters. The things that aren't in the dictionary are things I don't typically use on a regular enough basis to add, or when I'm typing capcha codes and the like.
I think it bothers me more that I can't simply make it not do it without disabling something I frequently use. I could've swore that there was another layer of settings that was specifically for the XT9 keyboard.

Did you make sure English is the default language for the keyboard?...I had an issue where I would be typing and some common words kept getting switched to weird/foreign words, come to find out somehow my language got switched to Spanish I think it was. Just another idea...I'm running out of other ideas, sorry
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app

It is on English. I did find I settling in Swype for auto spacing, but it didn't do anything for me either. ; ;

SwiftKey x beta = best kbd for the Zio

A pretty gutsy claim, yes.
But I've been typing with this kbd for 2 days now, and I gotta say that with the general impreciseness of our screens, this keyboard allows me to type 50% faster than any other kbd on the market.
It has predictive text, but also searches for words that go with the prior word typed.
It also has the ability to learn from your typing style by analyzing your sms, text, gmail and facebook messages.
I highly recommend this keyboard for ALL zio owners.
You can download it @:

Very nice but at 17mb it eats up alot of ram. I'll give it a try for a while longer and see how well it really works.
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
Its a beta release, so there are going to be bugs Im sure. Works 100% for me, and Im tellin ya, its far superior to all kbds I've tried. Even ultra kbd 0.o
Yeah, it does take up a little more RAM, but for the functionality, and the responseness of the program, I dont mind. Also being as it is a beta release, there might be some more code trimming to be done that will reduce the amount of ram.
But, If you think about it, its one of the most important apps for your phone; your keyboard. With that said, I wouldnt mind if it took up 20-25Mb, as long as it performs just as it does now. With my ROM installed, Im still at 55Mb-60Mb free RAM with it installed (and thats NOT stock -- on an established system).
I got the Language pack Error as well. Go into Settings/Language Profile/Language and download the English or whatever language you use.
I have purchased swift key and have been using it for over a year now. I rarely need to use more than two or three key strokes per word. The way it predicts the next word is simply amazing. Hands down the best keyboard replacement out there. Those of you who are using the beta version and having trouble with it should try the 30 day trial of swift key without the X available on the market.

Nice to see you guys comin' around to SwiftKey. i've been using it for quite a while and got in on the VIP/beta program for 2/X. It's gotten better and better over the last several months.
Option to apply skins is planned, too, FYI.
After using this keyboard for about two weeks, all I can say is SIMPLY AMAZING. The way it predicts words is phenomenal I rarely even have to type anything as it pieces together sentences for me almost flawlessly. I highly recommend this to anyone frustrated by the lame stock keyboards from android, or I would put it against any of the slide, swype style keyboards any day.
SwiftKey was super slow on my Zio. I'm not sure why everybody has such luck with it. Smart Keyboard Pro is way faster and uses up less memory. The text prediction really does suck though
Check out ThickButtons. Free. Best for zio IMO
Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and say swiftkey speech to text for the win I'm using it right now

What do you mean, HOW do we use SwiftKey? It's a keyboard. I push buttons on the screen to make letters appear. Don't know of any other way to use it aside from speech to text.

What I meant was what mode works better? The precise or rapid?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using XDA App
I like rapid. Never tried precise to be honest. I knew I wanted something that I can tap away fast with and it auto correct, even when I miss alot.

Sorry for the lame post, need a few more to get to 10.
I use precise, but that's because I've used touch keyboards for a couple of years before my captivate and got used to double tapping space for period.

Camera / Keyboard and typing issues

Anyone else having issues typing with their phones? Like pressing the letter "p" on one side of the keyboard and then the microphone icon comes up to record as it was pressed. Very frustrating.
My camera will lag and take pics very slow and delayed... I'm thinking of taking this thing back. Any advice or fixes available?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
I'm using Thumb Keyboard. It allows me to change the keyboard layout. I also moved the mic to the number keypad and replaced it with a comma, since I use commas more often.
For faster pics, you can try taking them in Sports Mode and see if that helps.

It's not about the key locations, it has to do with an input issue. When pressing one letter it will detect another on the other side of the keyboard. Not sure if I should unroot and see if it fixes...
I'm going to do a little more research today.

Weird keyboard issue

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can shed any light on a weird issue that appears every now and then where the keyboard on my inc s seems to stop accepting words add I type in, despite the letters highlighting as I type. When thus happens I have to reboot to get it to work again. This its on all apps that have the keyboard ability. Weird and annoying as hell

[HOW TO] Enable Navigation/Softkey bar

Hey yall. After trying many methods of enable the soft keys which i really like my self, i finaly found out whats messing it up.
in /system in build.prop there is a bit of code which looks like that in the screenshot. my problem was i kept adding code when i simply needed to change the existing code to 0 instead of 1. as shown in the screenshot
also as you can see they work in the xda app. but the buttons dont work in any other app.
anyone know why? i tried changing resolution in build prop and nothing. so i need some help.
So again. My problem is that i cant get the nav bar to work all the time.
Okay um. Attempted to change DPI in build prop. It did work and change DPI but softkeys still only work on the xda app.
I'm thinking maybe disabling hw capatative buttons will fix the problem.

Attempted using gravity box with xposed installer but nothing that way.

after doing some research, all i figured out was that i would have to decompile and modify the framework-res.apk...
even though i have experience with making apps, i get so lost in google's apps since they arent compiled with classes, its all pure xml and all of it doesnt make sense, so if anyone could, please, figure out what to do in the framework res, to make the nav bar work better, id be very grateful
you can find it at /system/framework
thanks
Well nice find so far! I really like the idea of on screen soft keys but what other use would it have that we can't get from the 3 hardware one's we've got? Does the screen feel crowded, because I imagine that with the thickness of them it'd be pretty cramped

Well you could give it a go and see what its like when running the xda app. Unless it works normal.
Um..screen isn't really crowded. Its about two status bars thick. Uses? Um...I know it has a recent app button. And if you're using a keyboard it will give you the option to minimize it. Other than that its just a nexus feel. And once you enable it you can use apps or xposed installer to have them minimized and you can toggle them like a status bar when ever you need it.

Well an odexed ROM basically prevents any modifications to the firmware or any major graphic ui change but in turn opens apps faster so I'm guessing that's the problem
That could be the problem.
Stock ROM works really well on my device so I'm not changing it till we get cm.
But I'm just wondering why it won't let the nav bar be persistent, even though I addad a persist command to it. And only works on the xda app
Sent from my HTC first using xda app-developers app
I think I figured out the problem. The framework-res.apk manages the overall layout of android, I just need to figure out which if the 600 xml files does that and give the nav bar a bottom margin.

Major find or not I've found out that the app also works with wordrefernce.com it's an old app. I found out today in French class lol but for some reason the on screen soft keys don't work with the premium xda app. Also I should say that there seems to be a 1 second lag when pressing the on screen keys. Unlike the hardware ones that are instant. I've also got lag everywhere else in the phone.. Don't know if this is a side effect

I actually get around 700ms worth of lag using hard keys so I don't feel a difference. But yeah for some reason the only work on some apps...
Personal opinion. If you want a nexus feel then you would use it. But its gonna tale a while till I figure out what's wrong. I'm still working with framework-res.apk at the moment

see, i sold my broke first and when i was doing a factory reset and testing to make sure none of my info was present, the nav keys became persistent
So to make the be active 24/7 you MUST DO a factory reset....or maybe just a dalvik wipe, but i did a full reset and they worked fine.
you need to write script (i don't the commands) to enable it after qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Auto Hide Soft Keys 's Spoof Soft Keys option can enable it via hack, so there is a way to activate it on boot when it doesn't show
