So this is for a friend of mine and i just spent the last hour or so searching for fixes. he came in to work today complaining that his SD card wasn't working. He plugged it in to his computer using an adapter which the computer recognized and said it needs to be formatted. When he tried to format, it failed multiple times. (we also tried doing this with his phone plugged in via USB but we couldn't access the card that way. The phone wont mount the sd card in his S4 active or my S4)
We then went on to try disk management which also failed. I searched and found a video about using the command prompts and diskpart to wipe it but that failed as well. The computer is also showing his 32gb card as 30.1MB. (this was a problem when we tried to partition it using diskpart)
I found another link in a forum that mentioned using ZAR, that failed, as well as SDFormatter.
He has some nostalgic pictures on there he really would like not to lose so im trying what i can to help him out. I believe i can completely wipe his card if need be but i want to try and recover before it comes to that.
Is there anyway i can fix this or is his card toast?

i assumed i could just plug it in and it would be recognized by any file explorer like es file explorer
i didn't receive any instructions or anything with it not sure what is needed to do to make it work
I have the same otg drive. All I did was: Plugged it in, went to Settings, Storage and erased usb storage. Checked in Solid Explorer and everything was good to go.

yeah, i don't get it this thing must be defective and very well could be since i got it from Amazon Warehouse.
I have even tried using Stickmount which supossedly mounts these drives for Nexus devices and it will not mount. i can't see it no matter what i try. just tried reformatting as well and nothing.

i want to say it is formatted in NTFS but i will try fat32 as well? i know ive tried two different formats as well. doesn't show up anywhere. from all the yotube videos i've watched minimally it is recognized with an icon when plugged in. i've never gotten that
EDIT - ok went and made certain to format to fat32. had to download a tool to do it in windows since my drive is 64gb. still will not recognize this drive. i rebooted, nothing. damn, no idea why.

I'm not sure if ntfs will work or not, I'm almost certain it will not, but I haven't tried it. I'm only suggesting fat32 because that's what mine is. When I plug it in, an icon shows in the status bar for just a split second.
Edit: Just seen your edit. I have no idea why either. I can't imagine anything being wrong with it, since it works fine on your computer? Will twrp recognize it? (If you have twrp installed)

in TWRP i assume it is not recognizing it either, but it does list USB-OTG (0MB)
there is nothing on the disc at all so twrp must just list usb-otg by default and it won't let me select it either

Just to make sure, for it to mount in twrp, you do need to have the USB plugged in before twrp boots. Twrp does list usb-otg by default. When it's working properly it will show the amount of free space in place of the 0MB.

ok yes, i definitely had it correct then. had it plugged in before going to twrp.
essentially, i bought a return at a low price off of Amazon warehouse. i don't understand how this thing could be fine in a pc or my chromebook, but it definitely will not show up on android. it must be defective. it would help if there were a light or something on the flash drive to show when its connected though.
i just tried it in my galaxy mega and it didn't show up either.
so i'll return it and try another one. i appreciate you trying to help.

Yeah I guess it might be defective. Maybe try another fat32 formatter? (Probably won't help any) I used 2Tware to format mine. Good luck anyways though!
I don't see any mention in this thread of EXFAT. I say this because I was having problems just yesterday (coincidentally) with TWRP 2.8 not recognising my OTG USB formatted as NTFS. Although TWRP showed the NTFS USB in the backup destination list, I couldn't select it. When I formatted as EXFAT, it worked in Windows, Lollipop & TWRP.
Method - Windows 10, Tools, Format - dropdown box select EXFAT.
(I believe that Stickmount provides an extension for reading & writing NTFS USB volumes, but that doesn't help for TWRP.)
Give it a go - nothing to lose...
I found I had to install Stickmount to mount my usbotg drives. I did install the supplemental files that allow ntfs and it works fine to mount/unmount external memory including an external 750Gb hard disk. [Edit] Didn't try with TWRP.
I've got a rooted GT-9295 running CM 12.1 Sept 18 build. When I connect a USB cable from my phone to my laptop, I get a "mass storage (UMS)" connection. I am then able to see everything on the SDCard, however I am unable to write to the card from my laptop. What is the solution for this?
Current stock CM 12.1 build is 2/14/2016 and I still cannot write to the external SDCard when connected as a USB device to a PC running MSWindows or Linux. This is inconvenient. Suggestions to resolve? Thanks.

SOLVED: The laptop OS is Suse Linux. Installing mtpfs on the laptop solved this problem allowing me to write on the internal sdcard and the removable sdcard.
Curiously, mtpfs is not needed on this laptop to write to an i9295 with a stock Samsung OS, neither is in needed to write to my Google Nexus tablet, Panasonic JTB1, or Motorola Defy+. Only to have write privileges on the i9295 running Cm12.1.
Hello guys
Recently i had to connect a USB drive ( Kingston 8GB pen drive) to my phone ( Xperia Z3C) but nothing happend. So i said "hmm maybe there sth wrong with my phone" so i tried to mount it on my Xperia Z Ultra, but again nothing was mounted. The pen drive was NOT mounted as it should and I also coudnt do it manually from the Settings( because the options "Mount and Unmout" were grayed out). This is pretty weird. I used to plug in pen drives, external HDDs all the time back when i was on KitKat. But i havent tried to do it since updating to Lolipop .... till now. I searched so long for an answer but i coudnt find anything Confirmed so i decided to ask you guys
My question is : What is the reason for not being able to mount USB drives anymore ? Is it the android version (Lolipop) or Im missing sth ?
Facts :
- i have an OTG cable ( even 4 of them, they are all in perfectly working condition)
- my USB drive is completely fine ( i tried with 4 other flash drives with the same result - not being able to mount them)
- my phone(Z3C) and phablet(XZU) are working perfectly and rooted with latest firmwares. I used to plug in USB sticks all the time back when i was on KitKat.
Help me understand what's happening pls
Are these stock roms on your devices, or are they custom roms? lots of custom roms debloat the software that's installed, sometimes removing the bigger packages not used so often.
Presumably you can see the file structure on the phone/tablet when you hook it up to a PC? so the lead and USB libs are working.
The only other thing I can think of is that NTFS might not be supported in Lolipop, have you tried formatting one of the drives in FAT?
all roms i have are stock
my USB sticks are all FAT32, my external HDD is in NTFS. Neither work.
Yes i can see all files on my phone/phablet through the PC when i hook it up.
Hello guys, I updated my smartphone moto G second generation for Cm 13. So, I put the Sd card and sistem asked me if I went use how memory internal , but after the finish, the Sd card stayed blocked, and I canĀ“t open on the PC, only in cellphone. Help me!
Try formatting your SD Card using MiniTools on PC.
Yeah, Android 6 does that. "Security reasons". The only ROM that allows you to use the SD card as you did on Lollipop is Temasek's.
It is not maintained for LTEs, though, so you'll need to do some tweaks to install it. But it's worth it.

Did you tried the MiniTools app on PC?
If you have LTE you should go for Titan recovery IMG, don't bother with CM or As the other guy said something about Temasek??? Far too complicated and seemingly non active so again don't bother. When selecting a Titan recovery .img you will have to go through a process of elimination, unfortunately. The devs of that custom IMG may or may not have got some of the uploaded images confused?? I say this because I had to flash my Moto G XT1072 2nd gen about 4 -6 times before I found an image that installed and booted correctly? Good luck. Let me know if you have the same model as me as I could save you a whole lot of trouble and just give you a link to an image or images that are guaranteed to install correctly if you have the same model as me? Cheers
