Frontal camera lagging - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. Just bought a Moto X 2014 and the front camera is laggin A LOT on darker places (but it still lags at normal luminosity). I updated it to Android L and the problem still persists. Is this common? Is there a fix?
So many questions...

Thought this was an interesting issue so i tried it out myself and turn out it does lag especially in the dark but with a bright image it seems fine tho. Hmm.. probably a image processing bug.

I read on motorola forums they are aware of that. They pushed up front camera for getting better selfies but maybe did it too much...
I would post you the link but still need to post a few more messages to be allowed to post links. Search for camera lag in moto x 2nd forums.

Mine lags like crazy too but I don't take selfies so it doesn't bother me. It definitely has an issue though.

Xperia SP camera problems?

Hi all,
I am currently owning Sony Xperia P and I am thinking about an upgrade to SP. But one problems remain. Camera.
I have read a ton of reviews and it seems that camera is producing pictures with a lot of noise and that the camera of older model P, is actually, better.
I have seen that people say that some custom roms and mods solve this issue, but nothing concrete.
Can you please tell me your experiences with camera? Is it really that bad? Any of the updates solved the problem?
thanks

I'm using the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition camera (gallery app) and this solves any problem with the camera(you can use it on stock and all other roms), from autofocus to noise. So I'd say dont worry about it and get this amazing phone!
Produces great pictures. But besides that, it still is a phone, not a professional camera hehe.

Can you put here some samples of photos taken with stock camera and this S4 camera? Some in dim conditions and some in bright conditions. You know. Some kitchen photos, some landscape with blue sky, etc...
thanks !

No.
Edit: There is other threads about this and not only on XDA. Look before asking or get a real camera.
its true that the camera of Xperia SP is not that good compared to XP or S3.
the pictures are very noisy and yellowish and in low light the camera get more worse.
i have also tried S4 play edition camera, camera 360, moto x camera but no major difference.

[Q] Q. Moto G (2nd Gen) front camera issue

Loving my new moto g. The camera has improved in many ways when compared to gen1. However, whenever I click pictures with the front camera especially when not in sunlight the picture comes shaky and blur. I attached a screenshot of how the pic is supposed(screenshot in the camera app) to come n how it ends up coming.
P.s.- I don't have shaky hands
Probably the front camera aperture is not wide enough to take pictures with faster shutter in low light situations. If it sets the shutter speed too low a minimal shake will make your pic blur.
Edit :Can you see what ISO, aperture and shutter speed is being used (check picture details)?
Front camera is one of the worst components on android phones...
Even the rear camera is not that great on the majority of android phones, so nothing to expect that on the new moto g that the front camera would be anything better...

It would take you a second to do the same thing. Don't be lazy m8.
Sadly mine isn't here yet (on pre-order in UK, releases on the 15th. My original Moto G broke a couple of days ago too so it was just as well this is releasing.)
I have a problem with the front camera. In low light condition, my camera suffers a delay in comparison of reality, as if it was lag. Anyone else with this same problem?

Finally dispatched at like 5:15pm today.
Says it'll be here between Thursday and Friday. Don't want to wait so long

Is it true the front facing camera lags

I've read a report saying the front facing camera lags behind, can somebody confirm this?!

Yes, its happening to me too, but not happen every time.
Have you determined what conditions cause this to happen?
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Free mobile app
Not yet, probably is related to the type of lighting environment.
Hey man!! I bought this phone today and I'm very disappointed because the front camera is lagging as ****! Dammit!!
I do not pretend to return it to Motorola so I'll assume that this will be fixes as soon as they send an update.
Overall the phone is very good, nothing special (if you had the previous moto x you don't HAVE to buy the new one)

I think I asked you in another thread, but I'll post it here: have you tried the Google Camera? it could be a camera app issue
edit: if you're not in a well lit area, the front camera can lag. that's what I read from a user with the same problem. he went into a store with a lot of lights and it worked fine

That is correct I posted on that other topic too. So, even in a lighter place the camera still sucks. That is very very sad. I'm not a selfie addicted but the front camera is a very useful resource

When I get mine, I'll test it. Maybe the U.S. version would be fixed. I'm only speculating
Sent from my Nexus 4
I never use the front camera unless I'm using it as a mirror. I just took a bunch of selfies in a dark room and noticed no lag. Did the same thing with my 2013 and my N5, which was the slower of the three.
Sent from my XT1097 Victara
Pure version is lag as well. I never do a selfie so I don't care.
No lag. On the front camera.
Sent from my XT1097 using XDA Premium HD app
Yeah definitely lags significantly
there is a lot of lag for the FFC. but the lag disappears when you hit the record button if you want video. idk what the heck is happening lol. it isn't a deal breaker
Definitely lags.... Pure edition
Definitely have lag here too. Didn't earlier in the day in sunlight.
No noticeable lag on my front-facing camera.

Use it in low light.
It is definitely in low light. I can stick it under my table, observe the lag, and then point it at my properly-lighted face and not have an issue.
Should be something easily fixed with an update, pretty weird though.
Mad lag
Laggin like a motha inside (lower light) worked well outside
Noticed when it doesn't try to correct for the lighting the lag is gone. Mine was lagging once and adjusted back to normal balance and the lag disappeared until it tried to light up my face a bit.

[Q] Moto X camera question

Hi All,
I've got my Moto X and I really love it. I previously had a Nexus 5 which I liked, but doesn't have much character compared to the X. The only issue I've got is camera quality. It seems insanely poor (and the N5 wasn't exactly great). One thing I've been doing though is using Google's stock camera app rather than Moto's. Is that a mistake? Is there software optimisation in the Moto camera app which gives better results?
Any other tips and getting the best pics? It's not even just low light. I took a pic on a bright day and the picture was totally washed out (my friend took the same pic on his iphone and it was just another league). All pics just seem to have bad light metering and are very noisy. I've never had this in a phone camera before...
Thanks in advance...

I don't have any answers but I'm hoping there are some fixes released soon, either by motonovo themselves or some industrious xda mods
I don't think any software mods are going to improve the camera much on our Moto X 2014's. Seems Motorola used an oldish camera sensor in this device. Some people are even saying this camera shouldn't have been used in a 2014 flagship. So we have 2 choices - Put up with it or get a phone with a better camera.

Wow, that's really depressing to hear :crying:
I knew before buying that it wasn't the best camera, but it seems to be the worst I've had since the nexus 4. Seems Motorola like to clear inventory of old stock (see the moto 360 hardware)

Yeah, I expected more from a 13mp camera. I'm considering switching to a Nexus 6, but I really like my Moto X apart from the camera.

If that's the case, it must be the lens or software. The G3 has a very nice camera.

The Moto X 2014 is the same sensor as the G3? Are you sure? But, even if that is true, the G3 has OIS and laser auto focus and other improvements. But I'm pretty sure the G3 uses a slightly newer sensor. The pics on my G3 weren't bad, not great but ok. However, they were a LOT better than on my Moto X 2014, this camera is a joke.

I'm almost certain they use different sensors, I could be wrong. The G3 has OIS and laser auto focus. The camera on the G3 is significantly better than the Moto X 2014, I've owned both. There seems to be a lot of people complaining about the camera o the Moto X, but no one doing the same for the G3. If they used the same cameras I wouldn't expect that to be the case.

Have you got any links that state the Moto X 2014 uses the same camera as the G3? The G3 could just be better because of it's extra hardware i.e OIS and laser autofocus, but I'd still be interested in seeing a link stating these devices have the exact same camera.
Right in the middle there.

Yes this camera blows. I had a S5 then a Note Edge. I love this phone way more than either of those but omg this thing has a crap camera
Both camera's (g3/moto x) have the same Sony IMX135, only the g2/3 (both the same sensor) have OIS and apparently better software. Compared to the lg g2 the moto x sucks donkey balls.
It does help to use other camera apps.

Just goes to show how much difference OIS and laser auto focus make, because the camera on the Moto X 2014 performs nowhere near as good as the G3. I'm just going to stick with this phone now until the HTC M9 is released. I loved my M8 but the camera and how tall and skinny it was led me to sell it. I'll definitely be switching to the M9 though if HTC use a better camera.

more like software and optics, but ya i agree. I think the m8 camera holds it's own against the moto x, especially in low light.

I'm just looking at an M8, I think I'd be stupid to get another M8 now though with the M9 around the corner. OIS has to help with the G3 camera and that laser auto focus is good. My G3 just kept overheating though, and after a google search it seemed to be a pretty common problem so I got rid of it. I was considering the Nexus 6, but like I say - I think I'll just stick with the Moto X 2014 until the M9 is released.
Edit to add: With the huge difference in picture quality from the Moto X 2014 and the G3 its more than just software that's creating the difference.
Taken inside an olive garden.... I feel like my note 2 was twice as good.
Yeah, that's pretty typical of a Moto X shot indoors
Well, someone has suggested the camera app might make a difference so I'll use the moto one for a bit and see. The focussing seems OK, so the lack of laser focussing isn't doing this. It has to be optics or software.
When looking at this phone, I kept hearing how Moto had listened to users and improved since the first X, so I assumed that would mean it would be OK. But they either lied, or the old X had a horrifically bad camera

What are you on about? I find the Moto x rear camera quite decent. The front camera is pathetic in low light conditions, can barely refresh the view finder once a second. But the rear camera is quite good to be honest. Here's a couple of samples I took with it.

These two shots were taken within seconds of each other. This is a horrible camera. I love this phone, but this honestly might be a deal breaker for me. Kinda hurts to say that because I fell in love with the device immediately. My only option is a Oneplus and I really don’t want to deal with their dumb ordering process.

Moto g5s+ camera

Hi,
Is it possible to use any third party camera app that can produce better depth effect without any shutter lag.... And yah, without rooting, coz its just few days old so dont wanna loose warranty.

Sorry but dint use professional mode.... Minor shutter lag in normal photo mode and frustrating 4 to 5 sec lag in depth mode... Any third part app and sorry but my cam app is updated.
Have you updated the moto camera app?
Well so far for depth effect to work with diff camera app it needs to contain that of hardware side support for g5s+ too so, I don't think u can find one at time to get apk besides Moto camera which works on depth effect perfectly well even Moto camera sux a bunch cause of software side lags
